I have honestly never understood this, how is a one goal lead less dangerous?

It's more about the mentality. There's no real right way to go into a two goal lead as opposed to a one goal lead or a three goal lead. Obviously, you'd take a two goal lead over a one goal lead 100% of the time but it's honestly more an expression than anything. But there was some look into the statistical basis behind this a few years ago and something like 40% of two goal leads in the NHL were surrendered, which is pretty crazy if you think about it.

Like 94G said, it's a mental thing, and more of an expression than anything.

When you're just one goal ahead, you still don't feel safe. One goal by the other team, and it's a tie-game again. With a three goal lead, you almost are safe, that's a tough deficit to come back from. Even if you did get complacent and gave up a couple goals, you still have time to stop sucking and coast or battle to victory.

A two goal lead is a kind of shitty in-between. You almost feel safe with that lead, so you get complacent. Especially if it's going into an intermission. Then they score, and suddenly you realize you're not safe anymore, but the other team has momentum and they score again. By the time your team gets their shit together, it's too late and now you've lost in OT.

It makes no logical sense, but it almost kind of does.
