Meaning Behind the Username
(Part I)

The Victory Hockey League is full of personalities that have graced our history from day one. From the likes of Nagger all the way to the bold personality of Julien. We've seen many walks of life run through the board with players and have influenced the way we admire our league to this day. We get to know the people behind these names a little bit by what they share on a personal level and by their real life jobs. The one thing we sometimes miss out on are their usernames actual meaning. Some members who sign up choose their name based on multiple different things. We've seen members use their own name (like yours truly) or people use their favourite sports team or player (like Eaglesfan036). It's about time we dive into a select number of these members by finding out what their usernames are really about. We'd like to thank Smarch, Hybrid1486, CoachReilly, frescoelmo and Zero for their assistance in this article.

Frescoelmo has been with this board for a long time. You don't go through multiple players without having a bit fun and success along the way either. Bryan as he is sometimes referred to by a few people is a Chicago native who resides in the Northwest city of Portland. He may not tell you he is a hipster, which he wouldn't be lying about but he does see about 200 on his way to get his morning paper. The story behind his name is told below:

"A friend and I paired up to do a Spanish project in 8th grade to write a short story. We built it around the 'fresco' clan, because fresco means cool in spanish (but the weather kind). One of the characters in the story was fresco elmo. Later that year Aol Instant Messanger blew up, and so I randomly picked it as my username." - Frescoelmo

Fresco has had several players work for him in this league as great Tarik Saeijs and Felix Zamora were very versatile players in their careers. He is hoping to pick up steam with his new player Sean Blacker who looks like a similar mould of the previously mentioned studs. We should mention frescoelmo is a Beer expert and big fan of Mike Ditka.

Hybrid1486 has also been with this site off and on for almost 35 seasons give or take. We first were introduced to him back when Jeff Hunter entered the league and the VHL world got their first glimpse at Hybrid. Jeff himself is an avid sports fan and knows his way around many professional sports conversations. He has held some titles in the VHL and currently is the VHL's Fantasy Manager. Cheers Jeff for the free TPE! Here is how he describes the making of his username:

"There isn't much of one. I started using it when I was about 14 or 15. I think I just liked the word hybrid, although Linkin Park's debut album might've influenced me. The number is almost my birthday, but a 5-digit number felt cumbersome...I just liked the way it looked and stuck with it."
- Hybrid1486

Jeff has been pumping out some very solid players and that maybe the reason he still here. I know for a time there that he wasn't interested or didn't have the time to make VHL a priority, but when he does he builds solid stars. Brock Waldron was a stud in Cologne and then moved to Quebec City. I once had Alex Stoyanovich on my roster in Helsinki back when I managed that squad. Clint Guite was a great two-way player back in his day and now Jeff is making noise with his current prospect Pete Stockton.

Zero is an interesting character when you mention his name around the VHL. Never one to mince words but always in a way that gets the point across without insulting anyone. Zero has held many jobs around the league and was the creator of the VHL's 20 for 20 series that ran many moons ago. Zero also was and still is a brilliant podcaster in the league and was a personality that is covetted very highly for others own podcasts. Let's hear how he chose his name:

"A guy on Warcraft 3 was pretty good at playing ranked games on Battle.net, and I was not. He gave me one of his accounts to play on and improve, and that account happened to be named ZeRo.O (which was my original nickname on the original forum). Changed it to Zero because I was kinda tired of typing the other name, and that's what people called me anyway." - Zero

Pretty interesting take on how to acquire a name for forums including ours. Jon was able to create some early studs with Dominik Stryker as a Helsinki great. He had one of the best two-way forwards in VHL history when he created J.D. Stormwall. A couple players in between that didn't pan out as well but now he brings us Jory Rose who looks like a pretty solid prospect who is looking forward to the S46 VHL Draft.

A lot people don't give this man the credit he deserves. However that might be because he is currently a General Manager of the HC Davos Dynamo and that can create some enemies. His history in this league has been stellar. He love his Chicago Blackhawks and more exclusively is a huge fan of Joel Quenneville's lip lettuce. I can't tell yu his first name because even I don't know it, but surely it can't be followed by Reilly can it? Let's get his take:

"I got into hockey right around the Mighty Ducks movies as a kid, and growing older, I had appreciated the movies even more. Coach Jack Riley was the main antagonist of the movie, and I found him hilarious. Unfortunately, I misspelled Riley, but what can you do. Remember, draftees... "It's not worth winnin' if you can't win biggggg!" - CoachReilly

This man has created some very good players. In total we've had four CoachReilly players and all of them have made their mark in the VHL. Cam Fowler was his first player and he put in a solid effort while he was here. I even had him on my squad with that Helsinki team I spoke about earlier. Jarvis Baldwin was another great two-way player in this league. Lennox Moher turned in a very dominant career as a Dynamo legend. His current protege is Freedom McJustice who is the golden boy of the United States of America.

Smarch has probably been here the longest of all the above mentioned members. Many don't know that he actually has as many players as I have had and that's amazing. Smarch came into the league back when it was in his early days. He is a native of Saskatchewan and gives you the up front answer instead of beating around the bush. What exactly does his username mean though? Well here is what he told us:

His success with players runs deep but he will be the first to tell you he has had some shitty players as well. Connor Low was one of the best defensemen of all-time and Smarch was the maestro behind him. Tommy Brown was an early gem for Smarch before he moved on to Baron Von Jonsson who ended up being a very solid player. He took some time off and came back as Abraham Sander who was a solid two-way player for Cologne.

Speaking of Smarch, I believe you missed the original Weinstein who was a goalie for Calgary -In between Brown and Von Jonsson

I know I did. I didn't want to embarrass these guys by listing their shitting players unless I needed more names for my graphics. I didn't miss him as Smarch listed him on the PM he sent me, I just left him out on purpose.

@STZ The one sitting in your inbox ;)

Oh shit it was read too. Around that time I was only viewing the site on my phone and the new format was confusing, must have thought it was a like notification. I can resend if you are doing a part two
