QUEBEC CITY, Canada - Fans and Players erupt in anger after controversial call

 

Before even the final buzzer sounded in tonight's Game 5 of the S49 VHL NA Semi-Finals in Quebec, it was evident that players, staff, and fans alike were taking issue with a call made by game officials in the final moments of the game.

 

With just 23 seconds remaining in the game, a faceoff in the Meute zone saw Max Molholt win the faceoff, hold onto the puck, and fire a shot. What happened after this is what fans are now calling 'a miscarriage of justice'. The shot missed the net narrowly, only to pop out in front of the next where it made contact with the skate of Legion defender Black Velvet before sliding underneath the pad of Quebec goaltender Greg Clegane and into the back of the net - wiith 6 seconds on the clock. Many are saying that the puck was sent into the net via a clear kicking motion from Velvet, while many others are saying it simply deflected into the net. 

 

Indeed, goals that go in off of skates tend to be controversial and after video review the referee's determined there was not a clear enough kicking motion to justify waiving off the goal. After the game, head referee Austin Gow stated "The puck hit Velvet's skate as he was skating to the net; he did not intentionally kick it and likely didn't even see it coming. This was a legal goal and we made the right call". 

 

GM and Head Coach of Quebec City Clinton Chevy, who was ejected from the game after tearing a proverbial strip off the referee following the call, put it in more colorful terms: "This was a fucking pathetic call by the official, I don't know if he just doesn't care or wasn't paying any fucking attention but he ought to be more careful when the stakes are this high. Christ, this will probably re-ignite the Quebec separatist debate for god sake. Fuck." 

 

 The Commissioner's Office have declined our requests for comment as of the time of this writing.
