Optimum Organics

Shankly has been giving some thought to what he is putting into his body. As a top athlete, he must ensure that he is not only eating the right type of foods, but also the most nutrient dense foods available. This means that he will sometimes be required to eat organically. Not a cheap undertaking, I know, but here’s why, if you want to be a top VHL star, you should be looking into eating organically.

Do you think Zach Parechkin (@DollarAndADream) built the chiseled body he used to win multiple Boulets from eating poorly? Did O’Malley (@Green) set himself up for success by not watching what he was putting in himself? The answer is obviously “no”, and to be the best you have to train and eat like the best. So if you are intending on buying organic produce, you should familiarize yourself with The Dirty Dozen. This is a list created by a non-profit organization known as the Environmental Working Group, which labels the 12 fruits and vegetables produced with the highest amounts of pesticides. Below is the list:

  • Peaches
  • Apples
  • Bell Peppers
  • Celery
  • Nectarines
  • Strawberries
  • Cherries
  • Pears
  • Grapes
  • Spinach
  • Lettuce
  • Potatoes

These ingredients can make some exquisite smoothies if you added a scoop of Whey Protein Powder, and that’s exactly what Shankly does.

“I actually saw Bobby Ditigal (@gorlab) make one,” Shankly said. "I thought it was disgusting. It was all green and slightly chunky, but he forced some down my throat and it was delicious. I owe him that.

Some studies also show that certain types of organic produce contain more antioxidants than their industrial kin. These include:

  • Tomatoes
  • Broccoli
  • Blueberries
  • Blackberries
  • Strawberries
  • Raspberries

When it comes to dairy, it's definitely worth it to buy organic. Research suggests that organic milk (milk from cows raised organically) contains higher amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), than regular (conventional, industrial) milk. These healthy fats can help you lose body fat; build lean, strong muscle; and even offer cardio-protective benefits.

Since dairy products like cottage cheese and yogurt are made from milk, it's also smart to choose organic versions of these products. Of course, if you buy skim milk or fat-free dairy products, you won't be getting the benefits of these healthy fats. So only buy organic if you go with low-, reduced-, or the whole-fat versions of these dairy products.

Organic beef (beef from organically raised cattle) is also worth the extra cash. Like the milk from organically raised dairy cows, the beef from organically raised cattle contains higher levels of CLA and omega-3 fatty acids. Research also has shown that organic beef contains higher levels of beta-carotene and vitamin E than conventional beef.

The long and the short of it is that athlete’s nowadays must be so careful with what they put in their bodies. Jarvi (@gregreg) or Finn (@Jericho), Power (@Devise) or Holik (@Beketov), Kolher (@Kendrick) or Velvet (@Higgins) – all of them have to watch what they eat, so if Shankly really wants to make a jump to a first-line hitter, then he’ll need to start eating like one.
