It was a great and unpredictable season. I was compiling prediction points earlier today and that was living proof of the fact. Davos winning the cup was one thing, and the Seattle/New York and Cologne/Vasteras playoff races another, but a whole different story are the awards. And even if the sim has provided a few surprises, yet more are hidden within this upcoming hour or so.

As is now well-established tradition, the awards journey begins in the VHLM. The Bratislava Watchmen claimed their second Founder's Cup in six seasons of existence in six hard-fought games with fellow expansion team, the Yukon Rush, who already had two cups of their own previously. In case you were unaware, expansion teams have really taken off down in the minors.

We start off with the Ken Holland Trophy, given out to the VHLM's top GM. We've got the usual suspects on the ballot, the two finalists, including new Helsinki Titans GM and S33 winner Vince Wong, as well as former Davos GM, supposed Seattle GM-in-Training, and creator of last season's third-best team, the Bern Royals, Tyler Barabash. All three GMs embodied the active spirit of the VHLM in S36 and are worthy contenders.

Austin Gow :yuk:

Tyler Barabash :ber:

Vince Wong :brt:

For what it's worth, the last time a non-cup-winning GM won this trophy was 18 seasons ago.

And the winner of the S36 Ken Holland Trophy is....

Bratislava's VINCE WONG! :towel:

Make that 19 seasons! Well-deserving winner, creator of the model VHLM franchise of the past six seasons who went off on a high.

Incoming is a friendly reminder of how terrible I am at drafting. Two Davos prospects became VHLM superstars this season and not because they're active. Aelred Leskowski has been in Minot forever and at last broke through as the VHLM's top goal-scorer in S36, while the points leader was Bern's Earl Parker. They hit people as well as produced on the scoresheet, so they're the leading candidates for the Yzerman Trophy; the VHLM's top two-way forward.

Leskowski and Parker are joined by throw-in Matthew Mira and super-prospect, 3rd overall pick, actual active 300 TPE beast, now of the New York Americans, Tom Slaughter.

LESKOWSKI, Aelred :min: 72GP, 79G, 50A, 129P, +35, 54PIM, 212HIT, 241HTT, 43SB, 11GWG

PARKER, Earl :ber: 72GP, 68G, 90A, 158P, +92, 55PIM, 154HIT, 199HTT, 6SB, 11GWG

MIRA, Matthew :tur: 72GP, 59G, 53A, 112P, +21, 52PIM, 182HIT, 291HTT, 23SB, 2GWG, 50.96FO%

SLAUGHTER, Tom :brt: 72GP, 51G, 51A, 102P, +42, 36PIM, 142HIT, 151HTT, 8SB, 6GWG

And the winner of the S36 Yzerman Trophy is....

Minot's AELRED LESKOWSKI! :towel:

In an ideal award, this would be Slaughter's to lose, but he didn't have the stats to combat perennial nominee and now at last winner Leskowski. As I believe he has under 115 TPE, this would appear to be the next Tyler Vassell/Frank Ricard/Jeevan Samuelsson/<insert your favourite VHLM god here>.

Last season there was some controversy when largely inactive Que Cumberbatch stole the Sawchuk Trophy from Brick Wahl and/or Mike Szatkowski Jr.. Cumberbatch retired while the other two are now franchise goaltenders of New York and Riga, leading the guy overshadowed by them in Season 35 to take full control of the goaltending race. Calgary's top prospect Martin Brookside was expected to beast this season but he really took things to another level.

Up against him are first-year goalies Blaine Olynick and Kimmo Salo, drafted back-to-back by Cologne and Helsinki, respectively. I wouldn't fancy their chances.

BROOKSIDE, Martin :brt: 66-5-1, .924SV%, 1.41GAA, 18SO, 1349SA

OLYNICK, Blaine :ber: 52-12-0, .897SV%, 2.59GAA, 4SO, 1612SA

SALO, Kimmo :osl: 28-12-6, .888SV%, 2.94GAA, 4SO, 1758SA

And the winner of the S36 Sawchuk Trophy is....

Bratislava's MARTIN BROOKSIDE! :towel:

Surprise! Not really. But really, a deserved trophy for a guy who's lacked them with past players. Olynick and Salo may be back for more next season, but Brookside sweeps the voting and moves on as the beacon of hope in a dire Wranglers situation.

Moving up the ice from the net to the blue line, we've got a similar situation to the Yzerman Trophy with the Bourque Trophy, awarded to the VHLM's top defenceman. A trio of inactives and Phil Villeneuve. Or a trio of inactives and Triton Jackson. Both Phil and 701 are sadly semi-active at best right now, but might get away with an award against Bern's dominant duo of prolific passing defencemen.

DAZZLE, Razzle :ber: 72GP, 37G, 94A, 131P, +70, 76PIM, 176HIT, 106SB, 7GWG

JACKSON, Triton :j20: 72GP, 41G, 81A, 122P, +44, 93PIM, 168HIT, 130SB, 6GWG

RIELLY, Matt :ber: 72GP, 44G, 106A, 150P, +77, 49PIM, 98HIT, 105SB, 6GWG

VILLENEUVE, Phil :brt: 72GP, 30G, 72A, 102P, +54, 88PIM, 220HIT, 73SB, 7GWG

  • Admin

And the winner of the S36 Bourque Trophy is....

Bern's MATT RIELLY! :towel:

Meh. He did have more points and led the league in assists, but really? I could make a better case for Dazzle. At least it was close. All four candidates got two votes and Rielly got two more.

As we inch towards the end of the VHLM awards section, it's time to note the leaders in individual statistics of Season 36.

You've met them already, top scorer Parker (158), top goal-scorer Leskowski (79) and top assist-makermanperson Rielly (106). Not really VHLM records but with lowering TPE caps for inactives, you may have just read a list of the VHLM's next generation of legends. And two former Davos draftees. :/

As mentioned, Bratislava won the Founder's Cup (as well as the Prime Minister's Cup). Martin Brookside was a key component of both franchises as he carried on his stellar work in the playoffs. He wasn't ground-breaking though so perhaps the contributions of his teammates were superior, such as that of defenceman and S37 first overall pick Slaeter Fjorsstrom. Yukon provides 18-goal scorer and slowly developing Toronto prospect Queen Latifa as their candidate.

BROOKSIDE, Martin :brt: 8-2-0, .910SV%, 1.68GAA, 2SO, 199SA

FJORSSTROM, Slaeter :brt: 10GP, 5G, 10A, 15P, +7, 4PIM, 11HIT, 10SB, 2GWG

LATIFA, Queen :yuk: 16GP, 18G, 4A, 22P, +5, 23PIM, 21HIT, 50.91FO%, 1GWG

  • Admin

And the winner of the S36 Esposito Trophy is....

Bratislava's MARTIN BROOKSIDE! :towel:

Nonetheless, Brookside prevailed. It was close, with 5 votes for the goalie, 3 for Fjorsstrom, and 2 for Latifa, but this was not a post-season of great offensive performance so naturally, the league's best goaltender prevails.
