I kind of feel guilty that Rift will be carrying out his career, because I sort of guilted DC and their GM @Enorama into signing him. Before the off-season started I had this great plan to post a MS looking at the teams where Rift may make sense next season. Given that both TOR and CGY were unallowed (despite both needing starters) given the GM player rules that were in affect surrounding Rift's history, those two teams were ineligible. Looking at the teams list pretty much left only a couple of choices in Helsinki, Davos and DC. Davos was always going to be a hard sell, as a rebuilding team all Rift would of ever done on that squad is help them played spoiler to better teams, which often infuriates the hard working members on those teams. Nobody likes losing to the rebuilder because they randomly have a goalie with starter TPA in net for no reason.

Helsinki was always curious, less rebuilder and more retool they have been working on the post Quik and Davison era, but the signs from this off-season have ponited more to tinkering with the hopes to  make a better push a season or two down the road. Which pretty much left DC. Heading into free agency I only actually got pitched offers from HSK and DAV, with HSK pulling to sign a lower end back up to give more minutes to their starter. I wound up contacting Eno, in the hopes of maybe finding a home. However he also had two goalies already, one of which is clearly the younger for the future in Wolski (shout out to my former TOR boy @DollarAndADream) and Pekka Pouta whom only has a couple of seasons left of VHL play. Pouta was debating retiring, and wanted to get another full seasons of starts in with the team he'd been loyal to for some time.

Ultimately, after a mostly in jest guilt post in the FA thread Eno decided to pull the trigger, make a trade and take the chance on having Rift for a season. Joining DC honestly couldn't be better for me. I'm weird, I would of liked to have played for all the franchises I could have played for during my tenure before I leave. DC is one I hadn't crossed off the list yet. More than that, it's no secret that my favorite NHL team is the Washington Capitals, so there is some lineage there. But even more, I was contemplating retiring Rift if he couldn't find a home that made sense. It wasn't out of disrespect to Davos GM @GustavMattias but as I'm not chasing HoF with Rift, if he wasn't helping a team try to do some damage and compete then there really wasn't any point in taking the time to update him. The only reason I was a little bummed with having to retire him, honestly, is that he's technically the "best" player I've ever made. He's had the most TPE, the only one I've ever had hit 1000+, he's had a starter position and minutes since he's had the TPA to justify it, and now that he'll be going to his final season I'm pretty sure he's one of the more longer tenured players I've had. I think I may have went all 8 with Mikka, when pretty much all my previous players retired anywhere from their 5th-7th seasons.

Anyway the ultimate point of this MS length Fan590 is to shout out to Eno and the rest of the awesome DC crew to giving Rift something to play for this season. Let's do some damage Dragons!
