Pat Svoboda Enjoying Electric Start Pat Svoboda celebrates his first goal of the VHL season to put HC Davos ahead 2-1 against Seattle. Davos would claim a 3-1 one victory in their opening match. Davos right winger Pat Svoboda had a tumultuous and disappointing rookie campaign, netting only 11 goals in a 72 games, and a mere 9 assists. But he's started this season with newfound energy and mettle, potting 4 goals in the first 5 games, and accompanying that with 4 assists. The trick? He has been peppering the net with shots as he did in juniors; his 33 shots thus far are remarkably over 6 per game, and over 25% of his 128 shot total from last season. Not just is his shot total up, but his accuracy is too. He is shooting over 12%, a pedestrian percentage that represents a major step up. Svoboda is tied for the lead in Davos goal scoring and tied for third in points on the team; his miraculous sophomore turn around makes the trade for his acquisition from Quebec look a lot better. Some remain skeptical that Svoboda can sustain this pace, as he did not flash so much as a glimpse of this kind of production potential last year. But these critics forget his pedigree; he was the fifth overall pick just one season ago for good reason. He certainly did show this skill level in the second half of his juniors season with Ottawa, as well as in his previous overseas career in Sweden. And his training work ethic was described by juniors coaches as unreal; he rocketed up draft boards in the final week during an incredible push to train his skating ability in spite of his towering height. his shot has top-level velocity, and his quik release fashions him into a weapon to be utilized on a power play unit. He can snipe like few others at this stage of his career; surely, this is only the beginning of a guy who will be remembered as pure goal scorer. He's clicking on the top line, and there's no reason to believe this will stop any time soon. "I had all the pieces, they just weren't fitting together last year. I have my confidence and my passion back, and I've really started to settle in to Davos. To be back in Europe, relatively close to Sweden here in Switzerland, and to be on a team that goes out of their way to accommodate me, it's really helped me find my game. I did a lot of work on skating and positioning over the offseason, and as I expressed after finding out I was not on the roster at the World Championships for Team Sweden, I do have some pent up fury from the rough patch I had right after getting drafted and from some stuff I went through. I've already thrown half of the seven hits I had last year, and expect to see much more physicality from me this year, especially as the season progressed. I'm leaner, I'm meaner, and I'm hungry for greatness," said Pat Svoboda.

It's no big secret that HC Davos is rebuilding, and has been for awhile. But it looks like they might finally be close to competing, with Pat Svoboda and Elias Dahlberg, two recent picks, blossoming quickly. And now, they have made two trades that will boost their draft cupboard, leaving them with three firsts in the upcoming S67 draft; if that's not enough to make the team stacked a few years down the line, nothing will be. As literally everybody knows, Seattle was handcuffed by a cap excess after the conclusion of the free agency period, leading them desperate to resolve their problems. The Bears would lose everyone they signed if they did not, including bona fide super star Matt Thompson. And so, they turned to a team that actually had cap space, HC Davos, who gave them Piotr Jerwa, a player they had been shopping all year, for stellar defenseman Robert Malenko and Seattle's S67 1st. But instead of keeping Malenko and go all in on this year, they then sold him to Toronto for Toronto's S67 1st and 3rd round picks. Now, they'll have two first rounder from these transactions, as well as their own 1st round pick; enough to collect many young stars in the draft.

Pat Svoboda, who reportedly was looking forward to partaking international hockey, seemed to be playing with a chip on his shoulder at Davos training camp after just missing the final cup. When asked about it, Svoboda made this comment, "I'm very upset not to make it; on Western Europe, for instance, I would've made it, but I have to play for Team Scandinavia. Obviously I love Sweden, but I'm very offended to be passed over as a 444 TPE player, and if the coaches don't appreciate my talent, then I don't feel so much allegiance. Scandinavia didn't even do so well, so I suppose I get the last laugh, they're missing out, but it still feels wrong not being there representing my country. I'm taking numbers here at training camp; I'm just angry about how my career is unfolding and I feel like I just want to hurt some people. The way I'm feeling, I won't be surprised if I end up getting a suspension from the Department of Player Safety half way through the preseason. Watch my checking rating rise; it's safe to say I've had enough. All I got to say is, opposing teams better keep their head up every time I'm on the ice."

Pat Svoboda talked about his recent growth and player development, seeming quite proud of what he had accomplished. "I think in spite of my stature I've gotten a lot faster and I'm conditioning every day. I have the athleticism now to match my elite shot, and even that elite shot has gotten meaner. I learned that at the top level, I can't hog the puck the way I did in juniors, so I've been practicing my passing a lot, and I've got so much more finesse going for. I think Dahlberg and I now can play off each other's strengths, which makes for some exciting hockey. I'm also getting better and less lazy in my own end, which should help with all around positioning and maybe even help offensively. It'll help with plus minus for sure, I don't want to be a minus player. And I think I just assumed my size would keep me from getting pushed off the puck but it doesn't; I needed to strength my shoulders and really build that strength not just to stay on the puck but to shoot harder. Not much but just added a touch of physicality to my game, I've practiced a bit of checking just so I'm able to go in the corners and win the puck."

Davos right winger Pat Svoboda spoke to the media about his hopes for Davos draft picks. "Well, I hope we get some solid guys, I'm not sure what position, I feel like Dahlberg and I are great on the wing so I don't see us prioritizing that. At any rate, regardless of depth at a position, it's my opinion that you should take the best player available, and I hope we'll do that. I'd love to see us get a center or a defenseman personally, but I'm not opposed to picking a winger; I just like my job and I don't want competition let's be honest. This year, I need to step up my game, because if my stats get better the trade looks great, but if I underperform Davos wasted assets. And I think having a top center prospect would really help that, or having a power play quarterback to drop pass to. I definitely hope we get someone who is fast; we're a young team, so why not focus on speed so we can overwhelm the other clubs in puck races? I don't know, but I trust our scouting team and I'm sure they'll make great choices. I'm looking forward to meeting the newest additions to the Davos family."
