We have been spoiled by many awesome draft classes and 45 Seasons of VHLness. We can't just sit back on the laurels of the past and expect this big machine to keep turning. In sales they say once you get a new customer you can count the days till they leave you. The same is true for the VHL and its members we need bodies as many as we can get because in the end no one can be here forever. Lots of people recreate take breaks and come back. Many members don't even make it to the VHL though so we have to maximize our chances by bringing as many people here as we can. The Season 47 Draft only has 1 round of prospects right now and while we will get more once the pre-season starts it won't be enough. To make sure we get at least 3 rounds of draft again we need people to go out there and recruit for the next few weeks. Remember recruiting new people or trying to get old members back helps the league, helps you, and helps everyone. You get recruitment TPE as an added incentive which is always nice. The most effective way to recruit is through other sim leagues like ours. So if you are apart of any others make sure to nicely ask about advertising for the VHL. Other hockey related forums and communities are also an effective method. So get out there and bug the shit out of people until they join.

Augustus Mengsk Our known story begins with Augustus Mengsk grandfather of Arcturus Mengsk. Augustus was a wealthy WWII general from the Ukraine. During the 1940s he helped defend Russia against German invasion and acquired enormous wealth in the chaos after the war. He is known as a hero of the war and inspired his troops with the famous quote: “When all you have is a hammer everything starts to look like a nail.” When he died all of the Ukraine and Russia mourned his death constructing a statue in his honor. The Ukrainian people even named a city after him Augustgrad. After his death the family fortune passed to his son Angus Mengsk. Like his father Angus was a hard and stubborn man with a tremendous work ethic. He also followed his father down a military path and eventually was elected a senator of Ukraine. Angus Mengsk Angus was seen as a revolutionary by many and strived for a more separate Ukraine away from Russian influence. Tragically Angus was killed his body was never found. While no one was ever charged rumor has it Russian secret police snuck into his summer vacation home and cut off his head. Also killed in the attack was Katherine Mengsk his wife and daughter Dorothy Mengsk. This leads us to the remaining member of the Mengsk family Arcturus. He was born into the wealthy Mengsk family and the expectation he would become a great military leader following in his family footsteps. His mother daily fed him encouragement about how he would become a very important leader. Arcturus often had dreams in which he saw himself as an important figure. When he would wake though reality set in and he never felt he had the potential. Arcturus was pushed toward the heritage of a military background but had little interest in fighting. He wanted to become his own man and forsake his family fortune to do what he really loved the sport of hockey. He spent much of his adolescence and youth jumping through various leagues learning the sport. The Ice Hockey Federation of Ukraine (FHU), Professional Hockey League (PHL), and Junior Hockey League (MHL) are just a few of the many organizations he played in. Arcturus Mengsk With the Mengsk blood in his veins he couldn’t completely ignore generations of physicality. Arcturus developed an affinity for playing defense. He always had the size and was slightly larger than his peers most of his life. The hitting and skating part came easy the offensive part had to be developed. By the time his family was tragically killed he had already no longer part of their lives. He let his inheritance go and took the next step toward becoming a professional hockey player. He declared for the Season 45 VHL Draft and was picked up by the Moscow Red Wolves via waivers. Season 44 had already started so he wasn’t eligible for the VHLM Draft. Being a local player from Ukraine Moscow had already known a lot about Arcturus. They wasted little time picking him up but it appeared he wasn’t quite ready for the minors. With Moscow Mengsk recorded ten points in twelve games with a negative 7 rating. The team wasn’t going to win a cup and his 6.25% shooting percentage was less than ideal. They decided to ship him off to the Bratislava Watchmen who needed a depth d-man. Their Mengsk continued his average play recording 36 points over the final fifty-seven games. His rating with a plus 7 and his shooting percentage only increased to 7.14. Ten of his 36 points though came on the power-play which gave light as to where his skill set was best used. At the end of the season Bratislava finished second in the European Conference with 88 points quite a bit below Oslo at 106. In a funny reunion with fate Moscow had to play against Bratislava in the first round. They got swept quickly in four games but Mengsk contributed little to nothing. In eleven playoff games with the Watchmen he recorded 7 points and a plus two rating. Only one of his 17 shots resulted in a goal and the team lost in seven games to Oslo. That left Mengsk slightly deflated after being traded from Moscow a team he knew, to being a below average skater, and the final insult losing in the conference finals. Rather than dwell on the defeats he pushed onward with a new drive to really give this hockey thing all he had. The physical foundation already existed he just had to get better at the hockey fundamentals of passing and scoring. Enter the Season 45 VHLM Draft where Moscow Red Wolves had three of the top 7 picks. Almost as if it was planned from the start Moscow drafted Mengsk fifth with the pick from Bratislava. The Bern Royals had three picks before that fifth one and passed over Arcturus each time. The renewed confidence of going back to Moscow and the chip on the shoulder from Bern passing lit a serious fire under him. This was evident all season as Mengsk elevated his game to a level that scouts didn’t think was possible. In 72 games during Season 45 he scored nearly two points a game finishing with 136. His shooting percentage which struggled at 5-7 was now nearly 12. More importantly he seems to have developed as a leader of the power-play getting 45 of his 137 with the man advantage. Of his 36 regular season goals 23 of them came on the power-play as well. Moscow finished with 124 points beating out Bern. The best part of all though is the two teams met up in the second round of the playoffs for the European Conference Championship. The path to the Founder’s Cup saw two teams that could have had the same players on the other team depending on who Bern drafted. Moscow quickly disposed of Bern in four games and Mengsk was a large part of that. In four games Arcturus put up 8 points four goals and four assists. As we sit now Moscow is on their way to face the Brampton Blades in the finals for the Founder Cup. In the near future we expect to see a rookie profile as Mengsk is set to join the Seattle Bears next season number 46.

I changed my mind. With playoffs going so fast I'm likely not going to be able to make them due during off-season anyways, so for teams who want to wait for the draft - these will be due 1 week or so from the draft date. woot

Well this is the only good thing to happen to me today.

Uh what do you do when your team has no S45 players?
