When you don't know you get a doubles week AND the birthday bonus as two separate perks until you're hired as an updater

Some of you may remember a status update of mine from last week where I teased an article series. And, as you may have guessed, this is that article series. If you're reading this article, I'm going to venture a guess that you took a glance over my 13,000-word article from last week where I went over the best player from every draft class ever, and after spending more time than I'd like to admit writing that, I had the idea to continue looking over old draft classes, seeing who did what, and digging up names both familiar and unfamiliar to myself. In particular, I'm going to highlight good players who have not made the Hall of Fame. It's one thing to put together a bad career, but it's another entirely to find success and end up forgotten. I hope these articles bring back some memories for some and teach others about players that they missed.

Speaking of doing that last bit, I chose to lead off this series with an overview of Pepper because his agent (Sonnet, who's no longer with the league) was my first-ever VHLM GM in S65. I used to make fun of him for Pepper being the prototypical Hall of Not Bad player--a championship, a top-of-the-league season, and the feat of reaching 300 wins, but not quite being worthy of induction. The thing is, I'm not sure if I knew why he didn't deserve it, just that I knew that more established members had said so. Because of that, I chose to look into that question of why--something that you're about to find out as well.

S63 was a historically good draft class for the time, leading to a great number of active players in a period of league history where that still wasn't expected. Pepper was no exception--as a high-earning player going 10th overall, the Titans were getting more than what they'd usually hope for at that spot at the time, and knew it perfectly well. As one of the league's most dedicated, ambitious, and at times divisive first-gens of the time, Sonnet would craft a career that would take his player through S70 with the same team. An overview of Pepper's career is as follows:

302-169-40: the most wins out of any goalie not in the Hall of Fame and the only player (so far) to ever break 300 wins and not get in.
    .917 SV%/2.59 GAA/30 SO
    Career bests: 49-13-2 (S66), .922 SV% (S67), 2.39 GAA (S65), 7 SO (S64)
    Continental Cup (S66)
    Daisuke Kanou Trophy (S66)
    Aidan Shaw Trophy (S66)
    Player Page Here

Overall, Pepper's career is surprisingly consistent, something we'll see coming up later. His best-ever SV% was only .005 above his average, and his best-ever GAA only 0.20 below. His defining season was, of course, S66, which was his only definite claim to fame as the league's best. After that point, he would spend the remainder of his career trying to reach his peak again and (mostly) inevitably losing to Riga in the playoffs.

Which brings us to a comparison. What justifies Pepper making (or not making) the Hall of Fame? To figure this out, we're going to compare Pepper's career to three other goaltenders who started their careers in the S60s...

Kallis Kriketers: a HoF player. The face of Riga, and the league's best goalie for most of the decade, Kriketers finished his career with better overall numbers than Pepper in every category and took home a great number of awards, including the Clegane four times, the Shaw three times, a Slobo, an MVP, and a Cup in his rookie season.

Raymond Bernard: a HoF player. Bernard put up similar overall numbers to Pepper (and at a worse record), but reached a higher peak than Pepper and for a longer time. Winning the Shaw twice and MVP once, along with his own Cup and Kanou, Bernard compensated for poor team production early on with some of the league's best play later while Pepper almost always played for a decent team.

Brick Wahl II: NOT a HoF player. Finishing with a worse record than Pepper and slightly better career numbers in SV% and GAA, Wahl is also a deserving candidate for the Hall of Not Bad. Consistently in decent-but-not-great territory, it's understandable why Wahl will never make it as he never quite stood out enough--save for an MVP-winning campaign in S71 with Prague that one-ups Pepper in awards.

So, let's look at the numbers over the course of Pepper's career and see how they stack up to the others.

Wins are the defining stat of Pepper's career, and really present his strongest case for the HoF. He doesn't have enough of an award cabinet to get in (as evidenced by Wahl), but the win total says something. I've separated these stats by season, by the way, to show where each player was over the course of their career--overall numbers are one thing, but plenty of players in the HoF spent a few seasons being unimpressive before surging to the top, something that isn't reflected well as an overall stat. Here, we see that our crop of goalies and their ranking is fairly consistent, and this graph puts Pepper on top.

Here, we see that Pepper kept a higher SV% than Kriketers for the majority of his career. So, in fact, did Wahl, while Bernard had a long uphill battle to fight to get back with the group. At the end of each player's career, though, they were very much within reach of each other.

That is, until we look at each individual season put in by each individual player. Remember what I said about some players really taking off later? This chart clearly shows that Bernard's peak was far above Pepper's (and it also shows what Bernard had to get through to reach his final total). And while I agree with the general consensus that Wahl isn't quite HoF-worthy, Wahl's peak was above Pepper's as well. I'm somewhat surprised that Kriketers isn't more present on the left side of this graph, but he likewise had more dominant seasons than Pepper, who stayed almost woefully consistent.

The surprise that Kriketers isn't separate enough goes right out the window on this chart, though, which shows each player's GAA over the course of their career when compared to Pepper's career total. Kriketers is far and away the best of the bunch, while the other three stay pretty close together.

...and here's something truly amazing. Every Kriketers season has a lower GAA than any season from every other player here, and it's not even close. And while Pepper did start off with the worst season out of them all, coming back from that really didn't result in a peak like we saw from Bernard and SV%. In fact, Wahl and Bernard both managed to beat Pepper's best (Wahl three times).

So, what does this tell us? Brick Wahl (at least the second iteration of Brick Wahl) never even made the HoF ballot, let alone received any votes. And if Wahl isn't a HoF player (for a more mediocre record--only 3 players with fewer wins are in, and they played significantly fewer games--and the fact that only one season was truly special), then Pepper definitely isn't. The record is there, but he's beaten pretty clearly in other categories by players both in and out of the Hall.

So, is Alexander Pepper a Hall-of-Fame Player?

    NO.

I hope to keep this series going when I have time for it--maybe I'll dig up someone who should be in at some point! Let me know what you think.

Alexander Pepper made the ballot for the Hall of Fame in S76, six seasons after the end of his career, and remained on it until being removed in S83. He would receive only one vote for induction, coming in S79.

First of all, points for an accurate thread title. This was as stream of consciousness as it gets, and I dig it. I'd rather your next player be named Vladimir Poopin', to be honest. I'm still in my VHL rookie season and I already plan on my next player being a Ukrainian sniper. Good luck with the rest of your continuing education, and the trip to Arizona. I can't imagine being there in the summer, with how hot it's been here in New York, but best of luck to you. No grammar issues, easy flow to the piece considering the disjointed topics. Might be nice to have some color or an image or something just to break up the text wall, but otherwise 10/10

Chip Stone was at the US Embassy in Oslo when he found out he was traded at the deadline by the Oslo Storm to the Cologne Express. Stone says he was surprised but excited: "Well, sure, the season wasn't going great in Oslo. I was certainly hoping for better. But I didn't expect to be traded. I always figured I'd finish my season out in Oslo then be ready to head up to the VHL at the beginning of the next season to be with the Seattle Bears! But this is a pleasant surprise! I have a chance to compete for a championship in Europe with Cologne and that's really exciting. They're very optimistic for me. Say I should play really well in their system. Which I hope I do, because my season has been very disappointing. If I can even get close to a point a game OR win the championship, I'll feel like I'm fully ready to compete in the VHL with men."

Hello, everyone. On day off #4/6 and loving life right now. Days on were stressful and I'm glad they're over with and done. Work has been busy and annoying but it is what it is. Do you have much of a choice? Not really.  Been a busy set of days off but that's okay. My first day off I went and met a person I've been speaking to and it's the first person since my separation. Went for a walk by the river valley, got an ice cream, went to this food festival in Edmonton and then drank wine on their balcony. The rest we can't say, ya know?  We then met up again on Saturday. This time we went hiking by Drumheller to have some fun with the river and the hoodoos with my two dobermans. Did the hike, got back to the truck and then we had a little picnic with some mimosas looking down on the river valley and hoodoo range. It was very beautiful. She came over after, we indulged in a vegan pizza and watched a movie! Pretty awesome stuff. Today went to the same food festival with my siblings and we tried SOOO many different kinds of foods. We bought 80 tickets and each item ranges from 2-5 tickets basically. It was amazing! Now to VHL, okay?

Bears are still good. Not bad. Can't always been first place. Proud of the team.  My player is doing good. It's been a lot of fun this season. I'm excited to have the Kovalchuk name bouncing once again. Theme week is fun. Crazy the VHL is 15 years old. Like, super crazy. Hard to believe I've been doing player sim leagues for this long too... like 11+ years.

DoktorFunk reacted to DarkSpyro in Scott Greene: Top 15 in the Bears History!
On my most recent podcast, Spyro After Dark, I took a look at my first player Jimmy Spyro’s career! This week Dok and myself were planning on starting up DaSLN once again but we were unable to due to this unforeseen circumstances. So to be sure that this gets talked about during theme week, I want look at another player from that era, Jimmy’s good friend and rival from Seattle, Scott Greene. I’m not going to go into super detail, because me and Dok want to talk about this on our potential upcoming podcast like I just mentioned, but I still want to give a little rundown here regardless. While Greene is known for helping Seattle win FOUR CUPS, I think he has always been an underrated key component to their success. Yeah, sure, he doesn’t have the individual hardware that superstar players have (sounds familiar), but he was a great playmaker and above average goal scorer for his entire Career in Seattle. I think it would’ve been cool to see him retire in Seattle, but he did a real Hogan-style brotherly move and allowed himself to be traded to improve the future of the team. Since the subject is the VHL at 15, let’s take a look back at some of the Bears that he’s outscored in the 15 years of the league’s existence. Greene sits #13 overall on the Bear’s points leaderboard, which is already unreal to start. If you look at the player’s above him, the list is just STACKED with Hall of Famers and Franchise caliber talent. He sits behind Felix Peters, Markus Strauss, Gabriel McAllister, Jarvis Baldwin, Nikolai Lebedev, Karsten Olsen, Timothy Brown, Hulk Hogan, Mitch Higgins, Maxim Kovalchuk, Matt Thompson and Scotty Campbell. That’s insane company to be with!!! IF he had stayed in Seattle, he would have possibly been within the Top 10 for points on a team that has been around for 15 YEARS! And at a time before hybrid attributes. 15 years of elite scoring from some league legends. I didn’t do a super deep dive back into the history of the league, but let’s not forget (as painful as this is for me to say) that Seattle won Four cups (and they will not let you forget, trust me). Thank GOD Vancouver won me one otherwise I’d would’ve been even more pissed back then. But, there aren’t that many teams that have had that level of success, and there haven’t been that many players in the 15 year history of the league that won FOUR CUPS. All this to say that I think Scott Greene is underappreciated, and certainly was an Elite level player for his whole career. I’d like to go over this with Dok on our podcast, and possibly talk more about that era of the VHL. We had some good times, and it’s players like Greene, Funk, Hogan, and Sundqvist that are a big reason why Spyro, Hextall, and LaFontaine are more forgettable, even though they were incredibly impactful on the leagues scoring taking a massive dive. Be sure to tune in next week when me and Dok drop our next podcast! Comment down below on this, too. I think Dok’s player might not have been HoF material like Spyro, but he’s 100% Hall of Very Good for sure!

DoktorFunk got a reaction from DarkSpyro in Theme Week: The VHL and Me 15 Years Ago to Now
So this is the VHL at 15, eh? I cannot believe something like this has had this much consistency. Don’t get me wrong, I love this league. But when you consider the advances in technology and games, you would think there would be something that scratches that particular community itch better than the VHL. The VHL reminds me of people who might still play fantasy football with pen and paper instead of using ESPN or Yahoo: it’s such an old school thing, but if you’re into it, you’re REALLY into it. What’s still the same from 15 years ago? Well, we still use the much maligned Simon T Hockey Sim. I have a little experience with it myself, and I can tell you, it feels way fucking older than 15 years. The web address is still the same. Uh, it still has teams? I’m not sure beyond that. In 2007, I was a sophomore in High School. I didn’t know shit about hockey. I barely talked to people and I didn’t know what I wanted to do in my life, something that I only figured out recently. What I would define as most of my main passions and character traits hadn’t even emerged yet. But in many ways, I’m still the same person. I joined up in 2018. That was a rough year for me. I had started a job in sales that I came to find out that I hated, I didn’t have a girlfriend or really any romantic prospects, and I had just finished self-sabotaging several friendships. I joined the league because it seemed like a great community, and an established one at that. Learning the “lore” for lack of a better term and getting to see my player grow was incredibly appealing to me. I became even closer with the league after moving in May of 2019. I didn’t know anyone here, and it helped get me through some rough times. And although my interest lagged a little, I knew that a site that had been here for 14 years wasn’t going anywhere. Sure, it seems like the VHL has had some rough times, but it always seemed to make it though it. I knew the old-heads would still be here. I knew that when I returned I would still have friends. And that’s amazing when you think about it. That you can step in and out of an established community of friends and still have it reliably be here. That’s only true in my real life of my closest friends, and it’s pretty cool. I’ve even made friends here that have given me genuine good real-life advice that has improved my life. That’s unreal if you think about how toxic the internet can be! Where will the VHL be in 15 years? Do you think we’ll have finally ditched Simon T? Will another team have dominated because of the meta ( if we’re taking bets, I’m betting on Malmo)? Will anyone still be here? I’m not sure, but that’s okay. I’ve had an incredible time here, and I hope the folks that have spent 15 years of their lives here, or whatever chunk of that it is, have had the same wonderful, fun, sometimes weird and inappropriate experiences that I have.

DoktorFunk reacted to Gustav in Art Vandelay Rookie Experience
So far, it's been more like the summer of Simon, as Art Vandelay's rookie season hasn't been exactly what he'd hoped. LA is sitting outside of the playoffs by one spot in the NA conference, and has improved since the season started, but there's a significant point drop-off between 5th and 6th in the conference and there's still a lot of catching up to do if Vandelay hopes to make the wildcard round.

This is a situation that I didn't think I'd be OK with around this time last season, as I've spent some time talking about how I don't know if playing my first season up wouldn't be worth it if the team didn't go anywhere. I think that it's hard to argue from an objective standpoint that this season brings some form of benefit to my career at all--I'm very likely going to end up with at the very least a worse overall record, a higher GAA, and a lower TPA cap than if I didn't go up.

But that said, it's time to get into the extremely open-ended and arguably stupid "what it means to be a rookie" part of this task. I know I've written things to this effect before, but I think it means a lot to be in my situation and still end up with a decent career. It's not like 8 seasons of success--not that I can guarantee that at the moment--has ever or will ever exclude someone from the Hall of Fame, and a losing first season theoretically shouldn't make any difference when the time comes to evaluate Vandelay against anyone else who stayed down (though I could see someone playing the "but worse winning percentage" card or something at some point).

Like I have also said before, the important part now is proving a point. With depreciation being weakened for skaters, this won't be as true in some situations, but I can see some people, especially those building goalies, being discouraged by the thought of coming up and playing in the VHL right away for fear of losing out on TPE. It's a mindset that will lead to many mega-hot prospects taking a season in the VHLE rather than doing what (in my opinion) they should do and come up as soon as possible. It's not entirely clear yet (and won't be for a while) whether a high-earning goalie should make the move up from a statistical standpoint, but the fact remains that Vandelay is one of the first with the opportunity to prove that coming up right away, even if the first season doesn't go great, can still lead to a very solid career when all is said and done.

Looking at some numbers, this season isn't entirely a failure, either! Vandelay has a SV% of 0.925 and a GAA of 2.82 with 3 shutouts, numbers which are really respectable considering the circumstances. I also just found out today that I'm now, by a slim margin, #1 in the S84 class in TPE. I'm not sure exactly how that happened, but I'll take it considering that at one point as a prospect, I was far from that mark. In a rare flash of self-confidence, I think I'm one of the people who could feasibly power-earn through an extra depreciation hit, and I really shouldn't be concerned about what happens in that regard since my build will cap out at a high level regardless. So, hopefully, other teams will find themselves Vandelay'd for a very long time, and those wondering whether or not to come up will take notice.

DoktorFunk reacted to Thunder in Fifteen Years of Class Acts
The VHL has quite the history, starting fifteen years ago and continuing to entertain gamers, hockey enthusiasts, friends, and any number of people interested in on line gaming.  Starting with eight teams and a whole list of bots filling rosters, the league has expanded to a worldwide community of on line entertainment.  During my short time in the VHL, I’ve learned so much more about the league, computers, graphics, etc, than I would have if I were a computer science major.  Like the Atanasoff-Berry, McIntosh, Commodore 64, and PC, the VHL has melded into a sophisticated brand of on line sports, only for human enthusiasts.  Now with the new hybrid TPE, the VHL provides more challenges and quests for the user.

One of the amazing things about the VHL is the history, especially the history of accomplishments by individuals and teams, and a lot of this can be found in the Hall of Fame.  As an example, the Tretiak Trophy, which is now the Aidan Shaw Trophy, recognizes the top goalie of the season.  When the trophy was first awarded, it usually went to the goalie who was on the best team, but there was some early conflict when a rookie won the trophy.  There was some discussion amongst the general managers and a mutual agreement to factor in all statistics to determine the best goalie nomination.

Another example of recognition was the Ken Holland Trophy, which is now the Jack Reilly Trophy.  This trophy recognizes the best GM in the VHLM.  The trophy was first awarded in season 15, while the name change occurred in season 42 and was done so to pay some respect to Jack Reilly’s accomplishments as a GM in the VHLM.

The Punch Imlach Memorial Trophy is another award that has a name change.  This trophy goes to the North American Conference Playoff Champion team, the counterpart to the Vladimir Kostka Trophy, which is awarded to the European Conference playoff Champion.  The Vladimir Kostka Trophy was changed to the Terence Fong Trophy in season 28, while the Punch Trophy is now the Devon Marlow-Marta Trophy.  When the Punch Imlach Trophy was named, there was discussion of it being called the Punch Imlach Bowl rather than the trophy, but the award resembled the NHL Clarence Campbell bowl, so in order to contrast the VHL from the NHL, the powers to be chose the award to be a trophy.

Two trophies are often matched as they are in close comparison to each other.  The Brett Slobodzian Trophy is awarded to the most outstanding player, while the Scotty Campbell Trophy is awarded to the most valuable player.  The Brett Slobodzian winner is determined by a vote from the league’s players, while the Scotty Campbell winner is determined by a vote from the general managers.  In addition, the Scotty Campbell winner is picked from a list of three, while the Brett Slobodzian winner is usually from a group of six who receive votes.  Over the course of the awards, there have been several streaks of goalies being selected for the Scotty Campbell Trophy; however, these streaks do not occur as often with the Brett Slobodzian Trophy.  The longest streak for a goalie getting the Scotty Campbell Trophy is three, while it is two for the Brett Slobodzian Trophy.

Another trophy that is nominated by the players is a trophy that deserves a lot of praise, which is the Frederik Elmebeck Memorial Trophy.  This trophy is awarded to the member who makes a difference for other members.  The stipulation is that the winner does not hold a high ranking position in the league.  Personally, I think this award has the most value because the winner has demonstrated what this league is all about.  It’s not just playing hockey.  It’s a community of people with a variety of life experience and knowledge.  There is a lot to learn about this league and it cannot be accomplished without help.  Its people like the winners of the Frederik Elmebeck Memorial Trophy, who make a difference and keep this league going.  Without their involvement and interaction with other members, the league would not be able to continue to grow or even maintain its status.

There you have it, fifteen years of VHL success and with the class of people leading this on line activity, is guaranteed to provide another fifteen years of virtual hockey.  Thank you!

Hey, I'm back! I made this for two reasons: to see how much I enjoyed making one of these on my own and because I'd much rather talk to myself or 50 minutes and noodle on the bass than write 2000 words for four weeks of claims. In this episode we:
    1. Blather on for a few minutes about what I'm going to blather about
    2. Interview myself as Chip Stone
    3. Go through some already very obvious league news
    4. Sign off and then jam on the bass.

Thank you for all of your support to everyone who supports me! You know who you are! I'm back! Now we just have to work on my friend... eyes.jpg

    Claiming for weeks of 6/20-7/11

I'm glad I have time for this again. I'm glad that it's been a warm welcome back so far! But, more than anything, I'm excited to see the renaissance of podcasters that the VHL has been producing. They're all solid and interesting. Back when me and Spyro started podcasting there were a handful of solid podcasts, but now it feels like everybody's doing it! I'm very glad, too, because it gives me something to listen to throughout my day! I like to see more personable, collaborative endeavors made by our site members.

Is it common for players to like to remain with the team they first got drafted to? I know I'm personally much more engaged when I'm interacting with Seattle. I'm sure there are players that just like to remain with the same team. Maybe I'm one of em!

Also, strange side note, but I've started playing Civilization 6. I had no idea Canada had a unique building called Ice Hockey Rink. It made me super happy, so I founded their religion as "Hockey" which I felt was pretty appropriate. I hope everyone is having a good day!
