    S91 Toronto Legion Team Awards

After failing to reach their Cup aspirations in S90, the Toronto Legion were ready to take another swing at a championship with a big injection of youth while saying farewell to a couple of their veteran acquisitions from the year before. Gone were superstars Ronan Lavelle and Siyan Yasilievich. Chomping at the bit were rookies Harry Callahan, Diego Machado and Walter Fitzroy Jr. Dens Oden unselfishly switched to defense for his last season and together the Legion entered S91 with lower expectations but with the ultimate prize still as their goal. Even after a slow start and backed by career years by many players and fantastic rookie years by the three first year players, the Legion finished second in the North American Conference and then went on a run for the ages only losing three games in the playoffs on route to a 12-3 record including coming back from being down 0-2 in the Cup Final against Helsinki to win four straight and Game 6 in overtime to give Toronto their 10th Continental Cup and first since S65!

Here are some of the individual highlights:
    -        Mac Atlas was T-7th in the VHL in goals with 46, 4th in shots (539) and T-4th with 10 GWG
    -        Tomas Sogaard was 6th with 268 hits while posting his 7th straight 30-goal season
    -        Bobby Bob’s 66 points were 10th among defensemen and his +37 was T-6th
    -        Dens Oden was T-6th in the league with 19 PPA and T-9th with 28 PPP
    -        Harry Callahan was 5th in rookie scoring (55 pts), T-6th in VHL with +37 and T-10th with 11 PPG
    -        Diego Machado was 7th in rookie scoring (50 pts)
    -        Joel Castle led all starters in SV% (0.938), 2nd in GAA (2.06), and 4th with 42 wins
    -        Castle was nominated for five awards, winning the Daisuke Kanou Trophy and was named to the All-VHL Second Team

Here are the S91 Team Awards as voted by the Toronto players and management:

    Best Defenseman
    Bobby Bob @Baby Boomer
The silky smooth Canadian blueliner had another solid season for the Legion, taking over the number one spot from the retired Siyan Yasilievich. Bob posted his second straight 66-point campaign which led Toronto defensemen and was 10th among league defensemen. He posted career-highs in many categories and his 56 assists (5th among VHL defensemen) led the team and his +37 rating tied teammate Harry Callahan for the team lead and for 6th in the VHL. A vital part of Toronto’s special teams, Bob also was one of only four players in the league to garner three short-handed assists.

    Rookie of the Year
    Harry Callahan @dstevensonjr
Toronto’s first selection in Round 2 of the S89 Draft (17th Overall), Callahan turned a lot of heads in the VHL as he immediately made an impact in the Legion’s lineup. The Canadian power forward finished the season 5th among rookie skaters with 55 points on 24 goals (4th on the team) and 31 assists. His +37 rating and 11 power play goals led or co-led Toronto and were among league leaders while his 23 power play points and 7 game-winning goals were 2nd on the Legion.

    Unsung Hero
    Tomas Sogaard @Brandon
Although his offensive effectiveness slowed in his last VHL season (career-lows in assists, points, and +/-rating), veteran winger Tomas Sogaard showed his leadership by stepping up and being the physical catalyst the team needed. He led the team in penalty minutes (120) and hits (268 – 6th in the VHL) both the second-best marks of his career while still scoring 30 goals (3rd on the team) for the seventh consecutive season. His experience shone brightest in the playoffs as he led the Legion with 12 goals, including both of the team’s overtime winners, the last of which was the Cup-winning goal.

    Most Energetic
    Harry Callahan @dstevensonjr
Not only did Callahan provide a youthful spark on the ice, but his enthusiasm carried over into the locker room where he quickly became one of the vocal leaders for the team. He played a prominent role on both special teams units and his infectious attitude was a big part of Toronto’s resurgence and journey to the Cup.

    Most Gentlemanly
    Harry Callahan @dstevensonjr
    Joel Castle @animal74
Both fierce competitors on the ice but at different stages of their careers, rookie Callahan and veteran Castle tied in the voting for the Legion’s Most Gentlemanly player in S91. Callahan was one of the least penalized players on the Legion with only 26 minutes in the sin bin and Castle only was nailed for three minor penalties. They also combined to create a friendly locker room environment.

    Most Valuable Player
    Joel Castle @animal74
After slowly working his way to elite status, Castle finally had the breakthrough season he was hoping for. Setting career-highs in wins (42), SV% (0.938 which led the VHL) and GAA (2.06), he was a finalist for the Shaw, Clegane, Campbell and Slobodzian Trophies and kept Toronto in the playoff race until their second half surge. He elevated his play even higher in the playoffs winning the Daisuke Kanou Trophy as playoff MVP.

    Legionary of the Year
    Harry Callahan @dstevensonjr
As mentioned previously, Callahan burst onto the Toronto scene not only on the ice but also off of it. He quickly cemented himself in the Legion culture and his strong leadership and outgoing personality endeared him to his teammates, management and the fans. He was also selected as an alternate captain in only his second season.

    3-Stars Award
    Mac Atlas @v.2
The captain continued to build off his career season in S90 and was even better in S91. He set new career-highs in most statistical categories and was the difference for the Legion between winning and losing many nights. He was tied for 2nd in the VHL with 13 1st Star selections which was more than double the next closest player on the Legion although Castle tied him with 22 total Star selections.

You would think that I’d probably have a ton to write about this week, with my London United within one win of a potential second Continental Cup, but I really don’t have a ton to say on the subject.

The work to get to this point was set up a long time ago, and we’re just seeing the residual effects now. The core of players that are leading the way for us have spent the last many months putting together their builds, grinding away at their TPE earnings and carving themselves a role here in the VHL and on the United.

The work we did put in this season was securing exactly enough depth scoring and defensive responsibility to survive the onslaught of other teams. Working with Torbjorn, Marchand, Knievel, Braun and Maloish to work on getting their builds to an optimal point considering their TPA and contract gave us some excess value for every dollar spent. Torbjorn had a monster season, keeping up with our max contract forwards at half the cost, and almost none of the high-conversion minutes. Jeckler, Braun and Maloish rocked the +/- category, not necessarily getting in on the action themselves, but facilitating offensive pressure and keeping Teno from too much danger.

The regular season was incredibly underwhelming, and I think we sunk into a morale pit early, and never dug ourselves out. Compare that to the post-season, where we got out of our first-round matchup with consecutive wins, snowballed through Malmo, and once again ended the EU Finals with consecutive wins.

This is probably our second-last crack at this championship thing, with Molly the Cat in their finals games, and Jesse Teno facing the same fate next season. Not to mention the wealth of depth that we’ve acquired shortly afterwards. There isn’t much left to extend the window into S94, and I’ll be doing my best to give the next era of United hockey a head start on discovering their new faces.

It’s a real testament to the work we’ve put in as a team to have core players stick around as long as they have, and that free agents want to come be a part of our process. It’s no VHLM locker room, but I’ve had a pleasure getting to spend the last many months with this group, and while I wouldn’t dare doubt Frostbeard’s ability to bring this thing back, I really do hope I can give them another opportunity to celebrate their success. I think it would mean a lot to them to be the first team to win multiple championships in the Hybrid Era, particularly after the long wait to be relevant.

So yeah, I really don’t have much to say about the Playoffs at the moment, pretty well everything is out of my hands at this point, and into the hands of Simon (Praise be to Simon). I’ll be proud of the team and our work regardless of the result, but wouldn’t it be nice! Lots of hockey left to be played, and you can count on the United being ready to outwork whoever we face!

    1. Not nearly as many as I hoped it would. DC has been on a hell of a run, but I was hoping that we'd be able to push them further than 5 games.

    2. Probably just winning the Calgary series. I don't think that many people were giving us much of a chance in that series, but we came out with our best and got the job done

    3. I think the MVP of our run this year had to be Jimi Jaks. Led the forward group offensively and had some big goals along the way. Big shout outs to Lattimer for having 3 GWG's in the playoffs, and Bob for being the consistent offensive star of the blueline as well.

    4. Don't care much to pick opponents, I find that you always and up in a "careful what you wish for" situation there. The stronger narrative would have been Helsinki for the rematch from last season if it had happened.

    5. Just the usual stuff getting ready for games. Can't break up the gameday routines at any point.

Making it to the NA finals for the 2nd time in my career.
    3. Who has been our playoff MVP so far?
    Jimi for sure!
    4. If we make it to the Final, who would you prefer to play - London United or Helsinki Titans?
Would have been nice to play Helsinki back to back years.

    2. What has been your favorite memory of this playoff run so far? Getting the game winner in one of the games last series. I want to earn my keep, and think I did in that moment.
    3. Who has been our playoff MVP so far? No one. Everyone. We're all stepping up.
    4. If we make it to the Final, who would you prefer to play - London United or Helsinki Titans? It doesn't matter. Want to play the best and beat the best, but not get too far ahead of ourselves. Task at hand is all that matters.
    5. Do you have any routines or superstitions that you're following during the playoffs? Wear my wristband and pads the exact same way and dress the exact same process.

Our New York correspondent Dick Hammer had a chat with Callum after the 3-1 series defeat at the hands of the Toronto Legion. Here is what the Americans' alternate captain had to say.

DH: 'Hi Callum, thanks for meeting up with me.'
CGY: 'Hi Richard. Well, one could say I have more spare time at hand to give interviews and such.'
    DH: 'Or golfing?'
CGY: 'Golfing is definitely not my sport. I have the hot take that golfing is a glorified walk in the park. I would rather be rock climbing, but since this is considered a risky pastime, my contract explicitely forbids me to engage in same. We'll see what I will pick up as an alternative. Rin introduced me into the art of Ikebana, but I fear I do not have the patience for it. But it is certainly nice to know more about arranging flowers and it is interesting to learn how much thought goes into it.'
DH: 'Do you have any thoughts on the Wild Card series loss for our readers or is it too soon?'
CGY: 'Nah, I am fine. Life is about learning and my dad told me that you learn more from defeats than from victories. I was going into the series with a feeling that we can do it. In the regular season we have won four of the six games against Toronto. I considered their offence superior to ours, but we had one of the best defences in the league. So the netminders would be tipping the scales. I thought with two recent Clegane winners in 36xW and Wallob we would have the edge. Alas, Castle let down the portcullis so to speak, and we showed the illness which plagued us all season: a lack of scoring.'
DH: 'Do you know about any changes planned to address this issue?'
CGY: 'That is not for me to say. However, we have the greatest NHL scorer of all time in our prospect system and if Wayne cannot solve our scoring problem, who can? We also know for certain that we will lose Ducky and Clue to Father Time, as they hang up their skates for good. I could profit a lot from Mal's experience and Rin, Tord and I will have to step up to compensate his loss.'
DH: 'On the other hand, the backend of New York's roster is young and has still a lot of untapped potential.'
CGY: 'I do not disagree with you. I think for a defence which consisted of 50% rookies, we held ourselves pretty well. But as you said there is loads of room for improvement and we are constantly working on it.'
DH: 'The Americans have only one pick in the oncoming draft, which is considered one of the deepest in recent years. Will that bite the franchise in the ass in the future?'
CGY: 'I do not think so. We have a first round pick and should be able to secure a valuable piece for our franchise. There are a lot of interesting players in this draft. My believe is, that the cap will correct any 'overdrafting'. Riga will pick three first rounders, Moscow and Davos two each. If these prospects pan out as expected, it will be difficult to hold on to every player due to cap restrictions. We will see what happens, but from the state it is now, we will need to get players from the FA market to replace our retiring players. If we decide to do so, that is.'
DH: 'Now to something off-season related: Will you participate in the ProAm Tournament again?'
CGY: 'Barring any injuries, I will certainly take this opportunities to meet with other hockey players from all walks of life. Whether they are just starting in the VHLM or are retired HOFer, I think I can learn from everyone something and I hope they can take a leave from my book in return.'
DH: 'Okay, that were all the questions for today, thanks Callum and have fun on the ProAM.'
    CGY: 'You betcha, eh?'

Here the playoff stats for 'the Beauty and the Beast':
    Kagamine: 4gp, 1g, 0a, 1pt, -3, 0 PIM, 2 hits, 6sb
    Janser: 4gp, 0g, 3a, 3pts, -2, 19 PIM, 15 hits, 3sb, one tied fight

    1. We will be playing the New York Americans in a play-in series. We were 2-4 against them. What do we have to do to beat them? Just step our game up. We're capable. We're rested. We're ready. Our series win is fucking inevitable.
    2. Our captain Mac Atlas @v.2 scored his 200th goal in Legion blue for 10th all-time. In three more seasons, how many more can he score? he'll get to 300 goals for sure. Guy has a julio franco sized dong.
    3. Who will score our first goal of the playoffs? Lattimer. I'm going to announce my presence with authority and help us get off to a good start and support my team.
    4. With Evan Bihler playing so well, do you think he should start in net for the playoffs? Always ride the hot hand in hockey, always.
    5. Finish this Valentine's Day card: Roses are red, the Legion are blue... the americans suck donkey dick, and so do you
    6. Which teams do you think will make the next big trade in the NHL? I have no earthly idea, hopefully not the Capitals though.

    1. Well, I'm a little late on this now, but we were stronger the last 3 games against them than the first 3, so I thought we had a decent chance.

    2. I think that Mac will cross the 300 mark by the time that he's ready to retire, and it will be a well-earned career accomplishment for the Legion.

    3. Can't remember who it was, but my pick would have been Mac.

    4. Great backup season for Bihler, but I trust our starter to continue to get the job done for us.

    5. Last year we were Champs, now let's go for two!

    6. I'll say the Flames, they seem to be in selling mode now. More bodies on the way out the door seems likely.

Reason: I hate declaring ties so while I knew this was a highly likely I was hoping that this wouldn`t be the case. Well, fast forward the half week remaining and we end up with a tie at the top of the standing. Making my prediction correctly incorrect!! LOL!! You can also blame Europe for the messed up of a tie since Los Angeles dropped points to Riga, London and Prague; while Calgary dropped their only two games to Moscow and London. Thanks Europe!!

So how did the VSN do predicting each conference at the start of the season; well, let’s take a look shall we?

    Start of Season Predictions:

    🟰          1.
Calgary Wranglers during the off season looked at revamping their defensive core when they brought in Skor McFleury @Alex via a trade with Malmo Nighthawks while seemingly hoping that scoring would take care of itself. Well, scoring was still a bit of an issue at 8th overall but due to the improved defense meant that Calgary was able to win a lot of low scoring games as the Wranglers had the 5th best defense in the league. Randy Bobandy @AJW(35g-53a-88pts) came back into the form that Calgary expected when trading for him a few season back from Seattle Bears as the 6`4” center lead the Wranglers is scoring. Mean while Skor McFleury @Alex(18g-53a-71pts) struggled this season to find his form in Calgary posting his third lowest point tally since leaving Riga back in S88/S89 off season when he posted only 55pts; clearly no one expected this when McFleury joined the roster this off season. Expect a bounce back next season and a motivated player through the playoffs. Merome Dilson @MexicanCow123(40-17-6; 2.30ga; 0.935% & 6 SO) was clearly the Wranglers MVP this season as he should get consideration for Aidan Shaw Trophy; played a huge role why Calgary ended the season on top of the North American Conference.

    🔻       2.
After finding a goaltender in the off season bring in Henry Tucker Jr @NSG(36-20-8; 2.60ga; 0.919% & 3 SO) from Riga Reign, it must have been huge relief for the team but still had a weakness on the back end. While the Dragons did try to address the issue by bring in Braeden Panarella @ThatCasual from Vancouver Wolves. It wasn`t enough for D.C. to really challenge Calgary Wranglers (2-3-0) or the Los Angeles Stars (3-1-1) as D.C. also struggled against top teams from Europe losing season series to Helsinki, Malmo and Prague. Offensively the team came as advertised with The Frenchman @OrbitingDeath (37g-71a-108pts), Jason @Jason kranz(47g-51a-98pts) and Vincent Laroche-Gagnier @vincentlg2007(38g-57a-95pts) all finishing top three in the league scoring with The Frenchman joint wining the Mike Szatkowski Trophy and should have his name consider for a few more awards at the end of the season. Mark Calaway @Beketov(30g-60a-90pts) led the defense taking a nice step forward this season off the back of what would have been a down season with only 67pt the season before; as Calaway led all defenders in points this season. Another name to watch for at the end of the season when awards for defensemen are handed out as he should be inconsideration for Sterling Labatte, Alexander Valiq and Jake Wylde Trophies; not to mention maybe the Dustin Funk Trophy as the most improved. D.C. Dragons will need to play better defensively in the playoffs in what should be a fairly even match against Los Angeles Stars.

    🔻       3.
Not completely sure why my colleague placed the 10th best team league ranking and the 5th best in the conference in 3rd; as I can only assume this was due to the fact that Toronto are defending Champions and had the most chance to improve the team through the season. Which is actually what the Legion tried to do as they made a series of trades bring in Steve Lattimer @pugsood(30g-45a-75pts); via Prague through Seattle and Fraser Wallace @Hoopydog(7g-18a-25pts) via Moscow through Vancouver Wolves. How much have they improved only the wildcard and the playoff will tell the whole story. The 9th best offense was led by Jimi Jaks @ke1vi(38g-45a-83pts) as he managed to finish top 10 in league in goals. Defensively Bobby Bob @Baby Boomer(15g-56a-71pts) led the way as the defender set career highs in goals and points. Joel Castle @animal74(32-28-3; 2.56ga; 0.920% & 6 SO) is still one of the best goaltenders in the league and should give New York Americans some fits if he can regain the form he had during the teams run to the Continental cup last season.

    ⬆️      4.
This team started the season completely unbeatable based around a high-flying offense of proven Stars!! Todd Cooke @KRZY(52g-53a-105pts) turned back the close and showed why he won the Scotty Campbell, Mike Szatkowski and Alexander Beketov Trophies back in S90; this time sharing the Kevin Brooks Trophy with AK92 Wit da Hoodie @hedgehog337 and should once again see his name mentioned in Scotty Campbell and Brett Slobodzian trophies conversation. Larry Abass Jr @RileyL(30g-56a-86pts), Jon Webber Jr @Webberj(33g-52a-85pts), Napoleon Dynamite @thadthrasher(29g-52a-81pts) and Sunglasses Joyo @JetsGoalie101(35g-43a-78pts) all finish with more than a point per game. If Defense was a question mark to start the season well, it simple remains an issue as no defenseman managed more than 55pts this season with Jens Lekman @Bobcat(13g-42a-55pts) and if they are going to get passed D.C. Dragons in the first round, they will need a very strong goaltending from Art Vandelay @Gustav (43-14-7; 2.51ga; 0.920% & 4 SO); not to mention the high-flying offense continuing to fire on all cylinders.

    🟰     5.
What a up and down season for the Americans as the team was to say the least inconsistent which is sort of expected from a young team with three rookies in their lineup with the biggest surprise coming from Rookie 36W @rory(29-27-6; 2.15ga; 0.932% & 2 SO) winning the Greg Clegane Trophy for the goaltender allowing the Lowest GAA; not to mention front runner for the Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy all season long due to his strong consistent goaltending. So, why is New York playing in the wildcard round than? Well, Lack of scoring really hurt this team as Jasper Davis @Josh(21g-42a-63pts) and Francesco Mancini @GioSivo(31g-30a-61pts) took a huge step back from the one hundred points that they collected the season before. Top offensive player for the Americans was FISTED ANALLY BY A CIRCUS MONKEY Analfist @STZ(38g-37a-75pts) after coming over in a trade during the off season from Vancouver Wolves. Add in the fact that New York lacked a true number one defender this season as Callum Gary Yannick Janser @Daniel Janser(6g-49a-55pts) just wasn`t ready to take on this role completely as a rookie but should enough to know that he will be a top defender if he continues to develop. Trade during the season helped improve the team as New York brought in Alfred Champagne @Anthique(30g-25a-55pts) from Warsaw and Vinny Lecavalier @Spartakiller2(14g-22a-36pts) via Prague through Vancouver. If New York also won the season series against Toronto so watch out for this team as I feel they have unperformed so far this season; not to mention have no pressure after making the playoffs.

Yaroslav Trunov @qripll(46g-48a-94pts) was brought in to replace the departing Scotty Sundin @fromtheinside and early in the season made most around the league go Scotty who? While it was a strange move or a move that suggest that Chicago expected to make more moves before the season started but somehow, they fell through. In the end, it was still very much a transition season with two rookies Joshua Schwarzer @Velevra(26g-31a-57pts) and Lionel Collberg @Masu Chan(8g-42a-50pts) joining a second year goaltender in Ryan Artyomov @Enorama(25-34-5; 3.03ga; 0.920% & 2 SO) so not that surprising that they ended up missing the playoff this season. Chicago has majority of the core in place for next season and will look to add pieces this off season via draft, prospect, UFA and maybe trades but either way they should be stronger next season.

Rebuilding team had most of the excitement during the S92 draft when they selected what should be the core of the team future to come for many seasons when they drafted Logan Ninefingers @Scurvy; 1st overall; Riley Martin @Smarch, 4th overall; Vlad Von Carstein @Dom, 6th overall, Guntis Gavilrovs @Girts, 7th overall and DB IV @wcats, 12th overall. Add in the fact that the Vancouver could one again be picking in the top position of the draft depending in the draft lottery and the future is sky-high but what about this year’s team? Nick Sansoe @Tipskid97(32g-56a-88pts) led the team in scoring in what is a career shattering season and Liv Slater @Subject056(36g-51a-87pts) led the defense for the Wolves; not to mention set a new hybrid record for goals by a defensemen at 36 goals and also finished third in defensive points. Cannot also forget the strong play of Dalkr Vidarsson @KaleebtheMighty(26-32-6; 3.09ga; 0.925% & 5 SO) on a horrible Wolves team. Add in rookie Carson Walker Jr @Cwalker(32g-29a-61pts); who finished third in rookie scoring after start the season not even in the top ten rookie list. Impressive end to the season for the rookie forward. This team will make a step next season but will it be enough to make the playoffs? Time will tell.

    🟰      8.
Another team entering a rebuild of sorts as the Bears have talent in Severus Targaryen @Banackock(40g-49a-89pts) as he led the Bears attack this season and finished top 10 in goals; as well as Gustav Mattias @Berocka(11g-8a-19pts), Toby Kadachi @ROOKIE745(20g-23a-43pts) and Simons Worst Nightmare @zepheter(11g-38a-49pts); who led the team defense. So, the goal for the Bears this off season is to add more prospect and more talent to the roster to help aid the rebuild. Finish last overall in the league means they should be able to add a significant piece in the S93 Draft, which should help!!

Reason: It is easier to make prediction when the sample size is smaller so the fact that we had a short week aid me this week. Add in what was clearly an easier schedule for Helsinki Titans and second in the conference was always going to be theirs to lose. Simply too small of a game sample also to see a ton of movement in the standings so this was rather easy to get correct this week.

    Start of Season Predictions:

    🔻        1.
Entering the season on paper as the second-best team in the league so should have had a strong season; sounds familiar doesn`t it as I am sure this is what we said last season as well when Prague missed the playoffs on the final day of the regular season. So, what is wrong with the Phantom? Secondary scoring is the easiest answer when only two players on the roster score more than a point per game in the season; John Jameson @Frank(42g-61a-103pts) and Nikolas Kauppi @Tetricide(42g-45a-87pts). Both players finished top 10 in goals and Jameson also finished top 10 in points so if Prague had another player or two that could manage a point per game; one would assume that Prague would have been at the top of the standings. Defensively Prague was one of the better teams finish 4th in goals against led by Moritz Stauffer @GoodLeftUndone(10g-53a-63pts) and Velociraptor Greg @samx(19g-36a-55pts) with solid goaltending from Matt Murdock @Acydburn(30-24-10; 2.34ga; 0.932% & 3 SO). Changes will be coming sooner or later for Prague as four players will retire at the end of the season, Ben McLaughlin @Ben mclaughlin(19g-28a-47pts), Fred Hampton @TownBizness(29g-37a-66pts), Faith Hope Love @MMFLEX(5g-24a-29pts) and Velociraptor Greg. Add in the fact that Prague best three players are also set to retire at the end of the following season; John Jameson, Nikolas Kauppi and Matt Murdock; leave many wondering if they pull the trigger this off-season to start the rebuild or try to run it back for one more kick at the can? It could be a very interesting off season for Prague but they will be more focused on Wildcard round match up with London United and hoping for a deep run these playoffs.

    🟰       2.
While Helsinki Titans did eventually finish second in the conference as predicted; it really only happened in the final week of the season. Which might be a bit concerning for the Titans as they look to get back to the Continental Cup finals after losing out to Toronto Legion. The biggest question mark coming into the season was replacing the retired Landon Wolanin @jacobcarson877 position on the top line beside star Daryl Dixon @Ricer13(50g-55a-105pts); who led the Titans in goals, points and should be receive some consideration for the Scotty Campbell, Brett Slobadzian and maybe the Scott Boulet trophies. Helsinki turned to rookie Grimgor Ironhide @FrostBeard(37g-45a-82pts) should be heavily consider for Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy after posting the highest points by a rookie since S83 when Bo Johansson @Shindigs; won the award with 81pts. Only one other Titan was over a point per game this season and that was the retiring Pierre Emile Bouchard @Gaikoku-hito(15g-73a-88pts); who will take home the Alexander Beketov Trophy for leading the league in assist and should receive some consideration for Sterling Labatte and Alexander Valiq trophies, maybe also Jake Wylde Trophy. Another solid season from Fuukka Rask @Jubis(38-18-8); 2.27ga; 0.935% & 5 SO), who should also get consideration for Aidan Shaw Trophy. Overall it was a strong season for a ranked 3rd in the conference and 4th in the league.

    🔻      3.
Does a lack of a true number one defensemen hurt them that much? Well, I guess that is the biggest question when you look at the London United as London has top end forwards in Molly the Cat @JCarson(30g-45a-75pts), Wann Kerr @VattghernCZ(37g-43a-80pts) and Leonard Triller @Triller(37g-60a-97pts). Not to mention a top goaltender in Jesse Teno @aimkin(36-21-8; 2.51ga; 0.924% & 4 SO) so that means it has too be the defense right? Don`t get me wrong here as London on paper is one of the best teams in the league and the conference so even having them ranked as low as 3rd and the team finish the season in 4th just doesn`t feel right. When you look at the defense it is consistent with all four players in the 650-740 TPE range; so, Yeah, the only thing really holding back this team is a true number one defender that can put up 70-80pts while adding the offense. Lloyd Braun @Toast(8g-48a-56pts) led the back end this season. London is also enter a bit of a cross road period with only four players signed for next season and six players retiring over the next two seasons. But those are thoughts for the off season as London United are focused on Prague Phantoms in the Wildcard round and also hoping for a long playoff run.

    ⬆️     4.
Malmo Nighthawks surprised everyone as they started the season in what should have been a season where they would take a step backwards after trading away Yaroslav Trunov @qripll to Chicago Phoenix for S92 CHI 1st (Olafur Gunnleifsson @JartY) and than top defender Skor McFleury @Alex to Calgary Wranglers for S93 CGY 1st. While quickly replacing the departing McFleury in another trade that seen the Nighthawks acquire Conference Prince-de-Galles @UnkemptCL4PTP from Prague Phantoms. Fast forward and Malmo Nighthawks smashed the league this season to claim the Victory Cup but how did they do it? Well, Every teams success starts with a goaltender playing really well and comments by college seemed to light a fire under Ash Sparks @DarkSpyro(46-13-5; 2.23ga; 0.930% & 5 SO) after being suggested that he was a second tier goaltender. Well, This second tier goaltender could possible have his name in the conversation for the Aidan Shaw Trophy at the end of a very strong season in net for the Malmo Nighthawks. Doesn`t hurt either when you have the best offense in the league with six players finish the season at the point per game pace lead by Viktor Jensen @Advantage(35g-55a-90pts), Jacob Stone @scoop(23g-61a-84pts), Yaroslav Bogatyrev @Bojovnik(32g-52a-84pts), Reese McFleury @Spaz(19g-57a-76pts), Henry Eagles @Greg_Di(39g-36a-75pts) and Ronald Johnson MacWallace III @RJMW(31g-43a-74pts). With Jacob Stone showing the importance of having a true number one defenseman that can chip in offensively as his name surely will be mentioned for a few awards at the end of the season. The question now is can Malmo continue the strong offense and defense play heading into the playoff as the clear favorites to win the Continental Cup or will they choke like former Victory Cup winners before them; making the legendary curse of the Victory Cup grow even more. Time will tell but it was a great season for the Nighthawks.

Very young team that started season with four rookies entering their lineup left most wondering what would Moscow Menace be this season, either a solid team charging their way to the top of the standings or a team fighting to make the playoff via the Wildcard round. Well, Moscow should a team that developed quickly and quickly moved to the top of the European conference but that was also aid when they traded for Dogwood Maple @dogwoodmaple(35g-57a-92pts) of which 47pts game after being trade to Moscow Menace as Maple would produce at an incredible 1.5pts per game pace. With Maple in the lineup Moscow went on a impressive sixteen game winning streak and pulled themselves clear of the mid-pack of European teams.  Axle Gunner @Steve(33g-61a-94pts) and Left Alone @okochastar(38g-56a-94pts) led the offense charge again this season with no sophomore slump for Gunner. Rookie Leif Reingaard @Zetterberg(13g-49a-62pts) showed that he will be a true number defender for years to come and put the league on notice as he finished top 3 in Rookie scoring and fellow rookie Olober Syko @Spartan (38-22-4; 2.86ga; 0.919% & 2 SO) was solid between the pipes for the Menace. Who know face a tough test in the first round of the playoff against Helsinki Titans last season Continental Cup finalist but I am sure Moscow will be a menace for the Titans!!

    🟰     6.
While Riga Reign surprised the league last season, this was never going to be the case this season as the team got younger with rookie Red Panda @Lemorse7(28-30-5; 2.98ga; 0.917% & 1 SO) taking over in net as Riga traded veteran goaltender Henry Tucker Jr @NSG for a S93 DCD 1st and a prospect in Eno Velvson @Nykonax. As this season can be summed up as transition year with Kimi Raikkonen @mattyIceman, Eno Velvson and Jussi Jokinenegg @HearnNation67 all looking to make the Reign next season. Add in the three first round picks in this coming off season draft and Riga will quickly be a team to watch starting maybe as soon as next season. AK92 Wit da Hoodie @hedgehog337(52g-56a-108pts) will retire with two more trophies on his selves as he claims Mike Szatkowski and Kevin Brooks Trophies. While also being consider for Scotty Campbell and Brett Slobodzian Trophies. Babay Shrimp @Blazzer(33g-50a-83pts) also had a strong season and might be looking for a new home this off season as becomes an UFA. Eric White Jr @Mysterious_Fish(20g-34a-54pts) and Martin Kemp @leafsman(16g-28a-44pts) both had solid rookie campaigns finish top ten in rookie scoring. Riga Reign will be a much better team next season as they add more youth to a team that is currently rebuilding.

    🟰     7.
Feeling bad for a team that tried to add during the off season and tried to be competitive but ultimately fell way short of what the team expected when Warsaw traded for Dogwood Maple @dogwoodmaple, Alfred Champagne @Anthique, Rex Wolffe Gregor @oilmandan, Clueless Wallob @DMaximus and Thor Reingaard @N0HBDY during this past off season. At first it looked like good moves that would give the team a chance to be competitive fighting for the final wildcard spots but as the season progress it became very obvious that it just wasn`t going to be enough. Warsaw made the decision to get younger by trading everyone that they brought in during the off season except for Rex Wolffe Gregor @oilmandan(24g-40a-64pts); who led the Predators defense this season and should do so for a few more season barring a trade to another team during the off season. Maxim Anisimov @McLovin(35g-53a-88pts) led the offense in his second season and seen a significant improvement in his numbers up from 57pts the year before. King Kisslinger @Kisslinger(17g-33a-50pts) also improved in his second season and rookie Thor Reingaard @N0HBDY(24g-34a-58pts) finished top 5 in rookie scoring on the season. Warsaw also have prospects ready to join the roster next season in Behrens Minion @UnknownMinion, Joseph Dubois @Dubois and  Hannibal Barca @DreMin15 but without any first round picks in the next two drafts will really need to hope that some of their other prospect develop. It isn`t all doom and gloom in Warsaw as some might suggest.

    🟰     8.
The rebuild after the tear down starts really this off season for the HC Davos Dynamos with three first round picks and two in the lottery but don`t expect this team to become good overnight as the players that they select will need time to develop. Which brings to question the time frame of the rebuild and the two players under contract in David Jokinen @Ahma(22g-46a-68pts); who led the team this season offensively and defensively; and Lachlan Summers @kirbithan(17-40-6; 3.48ga; 0.922% & 2 SO). If we are correct in thinking the rebuild starting this off season mean another season of losing hockey before a up turn would be expected in S94 earliest, which would be Lachlan Summers finals season and David Jokinen second last season meaning wouldn`t it be better for these two player to be traded for future assets; if Davos can get the right asking price? Either way this will be a team to watch during this season draft as Davos drafts what should be their core future.

That it for the first week review and next week’s predictions. As always tell me below in the comment section how poor my predictions are and I will make sure to read them. Either way until next week Keep the sticks on the ice and your heads up!!

animal74 reacted to dstevensonjr in A Celebration of Legion Career Bests: S92 Edition
Welcome to a look back at the S92 regular season, and the career bests that were hit this season by the members of the Toronto Legion organization! It's a good time to celebrate the regular season before the start of the postseason for the Legion organization. Career bests are noted with an asterisk in the total stats.

    ------------------------------------------------------

Here is the Legion VHL roster:

    RW - Kobe Johnson

    72 GP*   9 G*   13 A*   22 PTS*   +2*   96 SHT*   20 PIM*   20 HIT*   8 SB*   2 GWG*   3 PPG*   0 SHG*

This was Johnson's first season in the VHL, so there was a full run of career highs across the board! It's tough to contribute early on in your VHL career, but Johnson has done a great job of making an impact early on as a rookie. Johnson has a long and bright future in the league!

    C - Diego Machado

    72 GP   25 G*   37 A*   62 PTS*   -6   343 SHT*   84 PIM*   106 HIT*   27 SB*   3 GWG   6 PPG*   0 SHG

Machado followed up a solid rookie season by piling up career bests in every category except plus/minus, game winning goals, and shorthanded goals. The largest spike came in the shots department, where Machado went from 187 shots as a rookie to 343 shots as a sophomore. Machado will continue to contribute next season as a third year VHL player!

    RW - Harry Callahan

    72 GP   30 G*   45 A*   75 PTS*   +19   489 SHT*   60 PIM*   180 HIT*   36 SB*   9 GWG*   3 PPG   0 SHG

Similarly to Machado, Callahan hit highs almost across the board as a sophomore. Every category excluding plus/minus, powerplay goals, and shorthanded goals saw a new high this season. Shots taken jumped from 269 to 489 this season and hits increased from 110 to 180. Callahan finished the season with Top 10 VHL ranks in shots (9th), and game winning goals (2nd). Callahan will look to take the next step in his career next season.

    C - Jimi Jaks

    72 GP   38 G   45 A   83 PTS*   +30   487 SHT*   85 PIM*   202 HIT*   31 SB   3 GWG   7 PPG   1 SHG

As a fifth year player in the VHL, it is much more difficult to set a new career high than it is as a first or second year player. Jaks was still able to manage setting highs in points, shots, penalty minutes and hits. The offensive leader of the Legion forward group this season also came close to highs in the goal (1 back), assist (5 back), and powerplay goal (tied) departments as well! Jaks finished the season with Top 10 VHL ranks in goals (10th), shots (10th), and hat tricks (2nd). Jaks will look to continue to lead the Toronto offensive attack up front next season.

    C - Mac Atlas

    72 GP   32 G   33 A   65 PTS   +3   401 SHT   96 PIM*   207 HIT*   36 SB   6 GWG   5 PPG   1 SHG

The Toronto Captain had a solid season offensively for the Legion this season, but had difficulty matching last season's career season. Atlas hit career highs in penalty minutes and hits this season, and managed his third straight 30/30 season. Atlas was also knocking on the door of highs in shot blocks (4 back) and shorthanded goals (1 back).

    LW - Steve Lattimer

    72 GP   30 G   45 A*   75 PTS*   +9   385 SHT*   9 PIM   35 HIT   41 SB*   4 GWG   7 PPG   1 SHG*

Lattimer's first season with Toronto resulted in multiple career best totals for the season. The year started in Seattle, but the bulk of the season has been spent in his new home with the Legion. Highs in the assists, points, shots, shot blocks, and shorthanded goals categories showed a very promising start as a strong offensive contributor. Looking forward to Lattimer's first full season in Toronto for S93.

    D - Bobby Bob

    72 GP   15 G*   56 A   71 PTS*   +13   172 SHT*   73 PIM   114 HIT   138 SB   3 GWG   6 PPG   1 SHG

Bobby Bob spent his fourth VHL season having an offensive breakout on the Legion blueline. Highs in goals, points, and shots showed the continued development that Bob has had for Toronto on the back end. Bob also tied career highs in assists and game winning goals. Bob finished the season with a Top 10 VHL rank in points by defenders (6th). The offensive leader of the defense corps will look to continue to carry the group next season.

    D - Jimmy MacElroy

    72 GP   10 G   45 A   55 PTS   +8   142 SHT*   107 PIM   182 HIT   131 SB   2 GWG   6 PPG*   0 SHG

MacElroy's seventh season in the VHL, and fourth with the Legion has been a success offensively and defensively. Hitting career highs in shots and powerplay goals has been a solid mark for MacElroy. He also hit a Toronto tenure high in goals and points. It's impressive to hit career highs this late into a distinguished VHL career before retirement next season.

    D - Fraser Wallace

    72 GP   7 G   18 A   25 PTS   -9   112 SHT   52 PIM   84 HIT   127 SB   0 GWG   5 PPG   0 SHG

Fraser Wallace was another midseason add for the Legion, and the eight year veteran hasn't been able to match some early career monster numbers that were posted in Moscow. Wallace has posted his second highest total of shot blocks in a season, showing an uptick in defensive ability since arriving in Toronto. Another good year heading into retirement next season.

    D - Walter Fitzroy Jr.

    72 GP   8 G*   23 A   31 PTS*   +6   120 SHT*   96 PIM*   93 HIT   146 SB*   2 GWG   5 PPG*   0 SHG

Fitzroy Jr.'s sophomore season has been a solid one, and has seen career highs in multiple categories for the Legion. Goals, points, shots, penalty minutes, shot blocks, and powerplay goals all reached new heights this season. Fitzroy Jr. also tied a career high in game winning goals. An impressive jump forward for a defender who will be a big part of the Toronto blueline next season.

    G - Joel Castle

    63 GP   32-28-3   .920 SV%   2.56 GAA   6 SO*   1806 SV   3697 MP

A six year Legion veteran goaltender following up a monster season in S91 as the backstop of a Championship winning team would not be an easy task, but Castle still managed to set a new career high in shutouts this year. Castle finished the season with Top 10 VHL ranks in wins (8th) and shutouts (1st). Still one of the league's best starters, Castle will continue to shine in Toronto next season.

    G - Evan Bihler

    14 GP*   7-2-0   .938 SV%*   2.04 GAA   1 SO   332 SV*   648 MP*

The third season in Toronto for Bihler backing up in net has been an outstanding one, and a heck of a send-off into retirement for the Cup winning goalie from last season. Bihler set career bests in games played, save percentage, saves made, and minutes played. Bihler also tied a career high in wins and shutouts. Bihler finished the season with Top 10 VHL ranks in save percentage (2nd) and goals against average (3rd).

    ------------------------------------------------------

And now for the Legion prospects:

D - Harjen Van Araken (LVA - VHLM)

    72 GP   5 G   36 A*   41 PTS   +32   76 SHT   112 PIM*   167 HIT*   85 SB   0 GWG   1 PPG   0 SHG

A fifth year in the M for Van Araken has produced career bests in assists, penalty minutes, and hits for the big defender. Van Araken has been a big contributor on the blueline for the top team in the Western Conference. Van Araken has been a solid M veteran for the younger players in Vegas to look to for leadership.

LW - Wayne Shotzky (OTT - VHLM)

    72 GP*   48 G*   63 A*   111 PTS*   +2*   417 SHT*   42 PIM*   128 HIT*   36 SB*   5 GWG*   11 PPG*   1 SHG*

Shotzky's sophomore year in the M has seen an offensive explosion, resetting career bests in every single offensive and defensive category for Ottawa. Sitting near the top of the league in multiple offensive stats, Shotzky has a chance at the VHLM MVP. Shotzky finished the season with Top 10 VHLM ranks in goals (3rd), assists (3rd), points (1st), shots (2nd), and hat tricks (1st). The first round pick in last season's draft for the Legion will certainly be a player to keep an eye on as they develop further down the road.

    G - Toddly Bobbly (OSL - VHLE)

    36 GP   14-14-6   .923 SV%   3.10 GAA   1 SO   1268 SV   2053 MP

This season was Bobbly's first in the VHLE, and playing for Oslo has resulted in a split in games between the two goaltenders for the Storm. With the split, Bobbly has had the better statistical profile so far, and will look to build off of a successful rookie season next year. The Legion S91 second round pick will have a bright future in net for Toronto when making the jump to the VHL.

    1. Not possible anymore but we made the playoffs so thats all that matters!
    2. Their continuous training, as well as progressing in the locker room.  Both have been great teammates.
    3. 5 in 2 games now seems even less likely but its possible.
    4. Yes! It's been a strange season for our goalies but both have had some super solid games.
    5. Nah, don't really recall many recent valentine's days either because the last 3 years everything has been shut down for snow days lol.
    6. CHIEFS BABY.. damn these questions aged poorly 😅

Well damn, it's been quite a ride the past number of months for Steve Lattimer. I've had a chance to reflect on my latest series of experiences in the VHL and thought I'd share so that no one can read this but I can earn.

It was a rough and bumpy process transitioning from my last team to Toronto. The previous GM was frankly just not good to me, and despite his rash of excuses and insults, at the end of the day he acknowledged that he dropped the ball. It didn't make things any easier for me but at least he acknowledged that the experience wasn't a positive one and was gracious enough to fulfill my request to get traded, which i greatly appreciated, so water under the bridge as far as I'm concerned.  That experience led me to being connected to Toronto, and admittedly it's been a really really positive experience. Why? The reasons are many. Animal - he's been a heck of a communicator with me to help me earn and support my team. Granted it's not the level of Jansen, because he set the bar so high that I don't think anyone could meet it, but I think if you were to ask animal, he'd tell you that the partnership and relationship has worked. I've been more excited to contribute to a team than perhaps at any other time in my VHL journey. I now check the games every single day to see what our results are (the discord bot helps), and see how we've done, how Lattimer has done, etc. I now even check the Legion locker room because there's active dialogue about our results and where we are in the standings, what's coming up on the schedule, etc. I really care about what's going on and feel like Steve Lattimer is part of something. I want this team to win and I want Lattimer to help them do that. Even going into the playoffs, I have a better grip of where we are and who we need to leapfrog in order to better situate ourselves. Once upon a time I wouldn't even have a clue if we were currently in the middle of the season or out of season or nearing any sort of deadline, playoffs, etc.  I'm basically much more 'active' even if I overall don't earn as much as I once did (again this is really just Jansen having been so ungodly effective in making/helping me earn, including doing trivia every single week.
All in all I'm very excited to be a part of Toronto, and while I have no idea what Lattimer's future is with the franchise, I can say confidently that it's been a great experience and one I'm grateful to have had.

Moving forward, I'll be continuing to earn and staying active with animal and being in the discord (case in point, I normally don't even really look at the discord locker rooms of other teams). Here's to hoping Toronto can make a run this season! Excited.

    1. We're now 6 points back with 5 games to go, so I think we're pretty much locked into the spot that we're in now. We've still got one more head to head game, so it's not impossible though!

    2. In terms of my own game, I'm pleased with the increase in shots and hits this year to be more involved in the game. For Diego, he's been such a victim of bad shooting luck this season. To be able to top his goal total from last season (21 vs 18) while dealing with that bad shooting luck is definitely impressive. I see a huge spike in numbers coming for next season, since the increase in shots this year (324 vs 187) will likely mean more opportunities for goals and points next season.

    3. Since this presser he now needs 6 in the last 5 games. I say that he can do it!

    4. Yep, I think we've got one more in us left for the season. We've got 7 now, why not finish with 8 instead?

    5. Nope, but that's mostly because my wife and I usually spend a quiet Valentine's Day together at home watching a movie or playing board games together. Thankfully not much of a chance for embarrassment.

    6. My guess for the game was 20-17 for the 49ers, so I was off on score and the team winner.

    1. We're six points back of D.C. for third in the conference. Can we catch them with 11 games left in the season? We definitely can. We're starting to cook mofackles.
    2. Our sophomore forwards (Callahan and Machado) have matched their goal totals from last season and set new highs in points. What has impressed you most about each one's progress this season? Persistence. We've had some ups and downs this season but they've kept their heads up and kept playing hard and earning.
    3. Bobby Bob needs 11 assists in the last 11 games to become only the third Legion player to reach 60 assists in the last 10 season. Will he reach it? He probably won't but that's because our team is quite balanced.
    4. Will one of our goalies get another shutout this season? We definitely will. Our goalies have huge dongs.
    5. Do you have an embarrassing Valentine's Day story? I remember buying some stupid gift in college for a girl and i never gave it to her. It was super lame, like some heart locket or some shit.
    6. Who is your pick to win the Super Bowl - Chiefs or 49ers? Chiefs even though if both teams crash on the team buses and die beforehand i think that'd be the best outcome.

animal74 got a reaction from DarkSpyro in The Craziest VHL All-Star Game Ever
So I was thinking to myself: What would be a cool yet crazy idea to bring forward to the VHL’s All-Star Committee (which doesn’t exist)? An idea that give players a chance to showcase their skill and yet be a bit bizarre? So I thought about where I loved skating most and I thought of my childhood when our fields would flood and freeze and we’d have a beautiful, mirror-like 10-acre field of ice to skate on as fast as we wanted. Check.

We could do the All-Star game on a huge frozen field! Bring in seating for thousands, food trucks, music, all sorts of fun activities!

But then I thought, that’s a lot of ice to cover, we’d have to have more players. Why not have all the players play at the same time? What about all the goalies? Have a quadrant for each team – in fact, make it a free for all! Players could wheel around and score on any of the other three goalies! Maybe even have two, three, or even four pucks! Holy frozen chaos, Bekman!

Then there’s the question of the Skills Competition. Incorporate it in the actual game! There would be so much ice, you could award extra points for speed, super dekes, amazing saves, hardest shots and put obstacles all over the ice to pass through, skate around, targets to shoot at and maybe even ice ramps to jump off! That would be crazy!

Another wild idea: In a predetermined number of games leading up to the All-Star game, any player that gets a major penalty will also have to sit in dunk tanks placed all over the outdoor ice rink and All-Stars will get points for shooting pucks at the target during the chaotic gameplay and sinking the perpetrators in the “swim bins”.

Now the teams, how could they be divided up? Four teams for four quadrants? Sure. Eye color? Left or right stick? Season born in? By native global region? Beauty contest? There are so many ways this could be accomplished but maybe just let the fans decide.

Since we’re on a huge sheet of ice anyway, another activity I would love to see among the All-Stars is a go-cart race on an ice track around the “stadium”. Throw some hay bales or something around it for protection and let them have a four lap race around the track. Other games for cash prizes could be longest slapshot, most accurate curling throw, and make the All-Stars don speed skates and do a speed skating lap. The possibilities are endless!

And of course you’d need an Alumni/Hall of Fame Game. But you would probably need ambulances stationed strategically around the rink as the older players might have trouble skating that far.

It would take a lot of technology to make this happen but I think the VHL could pull it off. There would have to be sensors in a lot of the equipment and the cameras would have to be top notch. The weather would need to cooperate as well. I think it would be a monumental spectacle which is more than you can say for all the other All-Star Games.
