  3. REVIEW: Love this graphic. The player pops off the page in spite of the fact that the background is nearly the same color as the player. Good cut out for sure. Also, a very nice touch to find a render that has the player looking in exactly the same angle as the dragon in the logo. Or great manipulation to get it to line up better. Anyway, suggests that Luciano is the dragon!
  4. Review: Agree with the reviewer above. The background does blend well with the main focus of the graphic - the player. This is accomplished through color choice, but also by the "swirl" that centers on the player's face. Font chosen for Underyew is tough to read, but that's a personal choice.
  5. Review: Wow, done on a mobile I'm impressed. Obviously doesn't have the polish of some done on a Mac or PC, but just getting the player set into the background was an accomplishment. Like the imagination of quoting Midget AAA stats for a newer player.
  6. Review: I can't do graphics yet, but I appreciate them. This looks good from the point of view of proportion. Player to full graphic. Are those the Aces colors though. Yikes. I wonder if the coyote could have been erased with a heal tool and an Ace logo put there in its place. But I don't doubt the effort and I appreciate it.
  7. Review: Nice twist on the layout. Where many writers have more clearly labeled each strength and weakness to the left, this article incorporates the strengths and weaknesses into the body of the paragraph setting them apart with the use of color. However, I don't see how the Player Agency's Reputation is a weakness of the player himself. There were also some areas that could have used more editing such as, "It is expected that this plays translates into success at the VHLM and ultimately the VHL level." His plays translates into ... - not sure what the author is trying to say here.
  8. Review: I particularly appreciate the imagination shown on the strengths and weaknesses. It wasn't just shooting, skating, etc., but there was work ethic, defensive-mindedness, and hockey personality thrown in. A different take on it. Side note: I had to read this one when I saw the player is from Cardiff. My SHL player is from Pontypridd, Wales and played some hockey with the Cardiff Devils shown in the photo. lol
  9. REVIEW: I liked the flow of this bio. One thing led smoothly into another and it really told the story of Guy's development. Also loved the curling connection! The images were interesting and really fit the text. Only criticism is that a little more proofreading was necessary. Just one example: "They were all skating so fast and with some much grace." - so much grace; not some. Still, an interesting article.
  10. Finally, Guy Lesieur has made it to the VHML and is on the doorstep of his ultimate dream – starting at RW in the VHL with some of his childhood heroes who are still lacing up their skates. So, a mere 8 games in, how are things going. We’ll let Guy tell it in his own words. “Well, I have to tell you. I was really nervous for that first game in a Mexico City Kings jersey. It was a special thrill because it was a home game in front of our own fans. We were playing the Ottawa Lynx and what an exciting game it was. We were all knotted up at the end of regulation. I had some real butterflies and was praying I wouldn’t let the team down with a bad penalty or a missed assignment on defense – not my two strong suits. But neither side budged and OT came and went without deciding the game. Then came the shootout. Our goalie Solomon Crawford just stood on his head and stonewalled the Lynx shooters to give us the 3-2 OT win. Personally, I’ve done all right. I’m on the fourth line, but I’m getting an average of 20+ minutes playing time and I get to skate on our power play too, so I can’t complain. I’m hoping to keep skating hard, prove to coach that I deserve to move up and help the Kings win a lot more games. Three goals and 2 assists in 8 games isn’t terrible and I’m particularly proud of my +5 while on the ice.

  12. 1. How do you feel on playing for the Mexico City Kings? I love being on the Mexico City Kings! We've got great management and a good and active LR. A few of my buddies from the PBE were drafted here also so there were immediate friends as well as new ones. 2. Did you expect to be drafted where you went? Not at all! I figured I would go much lower in the draft, but I guess GM knew me a little from my time hanging out in the SHL Colorado Raptors LR while I'm waiting for the draft to start there. 3. Are you happy with where you got drafted in the vhl/where do you think youll be drafted in the vhl? This is my first season in the league, so I haven't been drafted to the VHL yet. I'm hoping to show that I am active and worth a decent pick on. 4. What's your gameplan for this season? Just keep my head down and earn TPE and enjoy the LR and the discord channels. Just want to get a baseline good player going so that I can build on it in the VHL. 5. Is a hotdog a sandwich? Very good question. Guess I'll go with "yes". It has a meat/fish/chicken/egg middle (meat in hotdog's case) with two pieces of bread on each side. 6. What are your expectations for your player in the VHLM? I'm hoping he can turn into a goal scorer as he was created as a sniper.

  17. Ok, so I have spent 5 years in the PBE (baseball sim league) and for most of those I have been studiously avoiding joining any other leagues. I hadn't planned on being that active in the league - maybe just puttering along at 50-60% commitment, but I got hooked early on and got sucked in. I'm now a minors GM and the head updater as well as a near max earner. I didn't want the same to happen in another league, but being a huge hockey fan back in the days of the Devils run to their three cups, I couldn't resist joining our affiliate, the SHL. Only a day or two later I couldn't resist joining the VHL - and then the GOMHL! I've experienced nothing but great fun from all three in my approximately 1 week in the leagues. In fact, I came to the VHL through the SHL as I am in a LR with a great bunch (Colorado Raptors) who all talked up the VHL - and now have been drafted by one of those great guys as he is the GM of the Mexico City Kings @Nykonax. When I compare my experience in the VHL with the PBE, I have to say I like the greater automation here. There is probably just as much manual work for the updaters on the backend, but it's so easy to update here by just clicking boxes for week claimed for, type of TPE claimed, etc. And it seems you don’t have to wait for a specific day of the week to be updated, but updaters are clearing the queue continually and then you can apply those approved TPE immediately. That kind of “immediate” reward is really great. I also think the visual presentation of the forum and portal are more appealing than in the PBE. It’s a very neat and clean look, though some things were still hard for me to find at first. That may be an issue in all leagues though – how to make things more intuitive for the rookies. So about not wanting to get sucked in – this article is my last task to get the full 12 capped TPE and I’m checking my discord far too often than is good for my life outside sim leagues. So …. 384 Words, For week ending 9/15
  18. Review: Had to review this as I loved the Biography. Very good formatting. Super easy to follow and I really liked the tendencies section in addition to the required Strengths and Weaknesses. Maybe a tad too much verbatim repeat of the Bio?
  19. Review: Nice read teammate. The formatting is excellent making it easy to read. I like the consistency on strength needing work throughout the piece as he is described as having a wicked accurate shot, but not a strong one and he is later said to be of good size, but not that strong on the puck or physical in his checking.
  20. Review: Interesting read. I loved the intro where he goes against type and is not any kind of heroic early in his life. And the added non-traditional (for hockey players) early upbringing on the beach sealed the deal. Loved the quotes and to take advantage of them, you might set them apart in bold or italics or even color like this. Not sure how some of the graphics fit though - the animated guy getting wind-blown? And those guys weren't pike fishing. lol But great read. See you on the ice.
  21. Review: Loved reading this and the author has excellent taste mentioning Ken Daneyko (my favorite player) in his bio. But truly, the military brat background felt authentic and added a lot and I also thought the brief injury history fleshed things out. And to get a peak into Erik's non-hockey related passion for cooking was a real treat. Agree on the centering of the photos, but that's probably a personal preference.
  22. Lesieur Shocked by Early Round Selection! The Shock Guy sat in a friend’s apartment in Montréal, Québec surrounded by approximately 20 other friends drinking Labatts and watching the live broadcast and was shocked when the announcer called his name, “And in the third round of the S68 VHLM Dispersal Draft, the Mexico City Kings select Guy Lesieur, Right Winger from Quimper, France.” The GM Nykonax Effect The third round?! Guy couldn’t believe he had gone that high in the draft. He wasn’t even sure if more than one or two GMs had ever heard his name before. But GM Nykonax is known for relying on his hockey instincts and taking chances on promising young rookies based only half on proven hockey skill and the other half on character. Friend Goes First Overall His new team located south of the border (U.S.), compounded his joy with some of their other selections. In the first round, Mexico City had selected Goalie Solomon Crawford at number one overall, stunning the entire hockey world. Certainly, Crawford was a promising young goalie with skills beyond his years, but number one overall? There were others with more experience and more highly touted – Crawford is ranked eighth among S69 prospects. But more importantly, Solomon and Guy had met just 6 months earlier when they were both playing in an international tournament in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, and they had hit it off immediately. After the tournament they spent some time in the local watering holes talking of the careers they both hoped to have in the VHL one day. Second Friend Selected Six Picks Ahead of Guy Also selected in the first round was Alyksander Hunter, a defenseman, who went at number eight overall. Then in the second round, Ryan Busser, another right winger like himself was selected. But more important to Guy was that in the third round, just 6 picks ahead of himself, Mexico City drafted Shush Nyko, an Icelandic left winger whom Guy had met just by chance when he was on holiday from France visiting the capital city Reykjavík and the gorgeous volcanic countryside of Iceland. Shush had turned into a great friend in just the space of his one month holiday and to think that he was going to get to play on the same VHLM team was such a thrill. After the reality of being selected in the third round and that he was a member of a real VHLM team had sunk in, Guy also realized that not only were Shush and he on the same team, but they might even be paired on the same line together! Evaluating GM Nykonax Now that Guy has had a chance to make his way to Mexico City, check in at the Locker Room, and meet some of his teammates he has had a chance to evaluate his new GM’s drafting skills. Turns out GM Nykonax’s reliance on hockey instinct may pay out big dividends. In just the few days since the draft, Nykonax’s selections have been rising up the Prospect Rankings. Here’s a break down of where each S69 prospect was taken in the draft and where they rank on the Prospect Rankings (note that Hunter, Busser, and Armstrong are not S69 prospects and are not listed): Draft Player Rank 1 Crawford 8 23 Nyko 21 29 Lesieur 23 56 Myles 24 59 Ridog 35 Look to the Future Reflecting on the fact that his GM had nearly always selected players higher in the rankings than where he took them in the draft and on the great guys he had already met in the Locker Room, Guy was very much looking forward to the start of the new season. 585 words, PT for week ending 9/15
  23. I’ll give it a go.
  24. Review: Great read! Love the trolling of your friend and as it turns out, VHLM GM, nykonax. It's not just amusing, but provides a hook to hang the whole bio on. Also love the name, Shush Nyko. Fabulous that you could insert a photo of an Iceland National Team member with a cage helmet so we get the authenticity of the Iceland jersey without the distraction of "is that really Shush's face". lol Looking forward to playing on the Kings with you!
  25. Guy Lesieur: Marching To a Different Drum Being French, But Breton French Guy Lesieur was born in Quimper, France on July 14, 2001. Yes, Guy was born on Bastille Day and he is definitely a patriotic Frenchman, but he is also from the region of Bretagne in the northwest of France and that has always mattered nearly as much – as much? – more? than his being French. Back during the earlier part of the formation of the kingdom of France, the Ducs of Bretagne were as important and as powerful – really more powerful – than the “kings” of France. And they had their own language and culture. This profoundly affected Guy Lesieur even to this day as the old language of Breton has still not completely died out. The Lesieur family still speaks it to this day. Early Schooling In fact, Guy went to a small private school run by Breton nuns where the old language was still the main medium of education. They did learn French as well, of course, but those studies did not really begin until you got to school at age 6 and many children, like Guy spoke nothing but Breton until that time. This emphasis that the Lesieur family put on the Breton culture in a sea of majority French culture was to instill in Guy a fiercely independent streak. And a determined grit that would serve him later in life. School and Struggles Continue Guy did so-so in primary school and about the same in intermediate school. He liked reading and French just fine, but mathematics and science left him bored and wondering, “when am I ever going to need this”? So far, he has been right about that, but he is only 18. It wasn’t until Guy turned 13 that he learned to skate. Extremely late for someone for whom it would become a passion. Hockey: A Guiding Star But his interest in hockey helped him turn his mediocre school career into something bigger and better. When his parents saw how much skating meant to him – and soon after ice hockey – they discovered that they had found the carrot that they needed. Guy traded attention in school, diligence in completing homework, and good marks into ice time. And he improved fast! By the time Guy graduated the French equivalent of High School he was a straight A student. And an excellent hockey player. Support of Family Guy would never have developed so quickly had he not had incredibly supportive parents. When they saw that Guy really did dive into his studies and that he was an uncommonly good skater with a keen interest in ice hockey, they found him a team to play on and when that exposure seemed to be the brightest spark in young Guy’s life, they also found him private coaching. Year after year, Guy outstripped the ability of that coach to take him further and so Guy went through coach after coach on his way to young stardom. Of course, that was stardom in a smaller pond so to speak and he has far to go, but still…. A Favorite Uncle While working his way through school another event would prove to have a profound effect on brining Guy to the place he is today – the eve of the VHML dispsersal draft. Unfortunately, this event was a personal tragedy. This was the death of Guy’s favorite uncle, Briac Lesieur – the brother of Guy’s father. Briac and Guy were extremely close from the moment of Guy’s birth it seemed and Briac spent a great deal of time with him. Whereas Guy’s father was somewhat taciturn and practical, Briac was a bon vivant with an extra dose of joie de vivre. Guy’s father encouraged his son as a supportive, loving father, but he always felt that hockey was just a reward that would help Guy focus on more practical matters like doing well in school. Briac on the other hand believed in following your heart’s passion wherever it led. It had taken him on all kinds of adventures in travels around the globe and the stories he told on his return enthralled young Guy. Tragedy Strikes But then the fateful day arrived and Guy’s father received an awful phone call. His brother, Briac, had had a heart attack and was in critical condition at the local hospital. The entire family raced to the scene. Briac seemed to recover at first, but as the family visited at his bedside, he had a second heart attack and soon died thereafter. But not before looking Guy in the eye and with great difficulty gasping out, “Don’t settle. Don’t give up. Play...” A Decision Made The family was shattered. A beloved uncle and brother had passed and a bright light had left this life. Guy mourned along with his family, but Uncle Briac’s final words to him kept ringing in his ears and settled into his bones. He turned them over and over in his mind and realize that there was no way he could ignore them. He had to chase his dream of playing professional hockey until there was no hope left – and there is always hope. Next Steps So, he went to his semi-pro team’s coach and asked what he thought the next step would be. His coach said that he must work toward playing in the world’s premiere league – The Victory Hockey League. But to do that, he would need to hone his skills in the juniors – in the VHLM. So, Guy continued to train, went to tryouts and prospect showcases, knocked on agents doors and did everything he could to get his game ready – and his name known enough – to enter the VHLM draft with some hope of finding a team willing to take a chance on a raw, speedy skating winger with a blistering slapshot. The Future Arrives And here he is today. Just three hours away from the start of the S68 VHLM Dispersal Draft hoping with every fiber of his being to hear his name called. And in the Xth round of the S68 draft, the Y Team select RW Guy Lesieur from Quimper, France.
