It is the time of the year, where families gather in front of the hearth with food and alcoholic beverages to celebrate the merriest of times of the year, putting aside all the quarrels of the year past. No, not Christmas. We talk about playoff hockey. The Wranglers had a brief pause to recharge their batteries while Seattle and Chicago battle out, who will face Calgary in the first round. And the winner is... Windy City. Please find our summaries of the first two playoff clashes between the Phoenix and the Wranglers. Some of the Calgary veterans will have a déjà-vu as Lazeski dressed for the Red, White and Black two seasons ago while having the most productive year of their career.

    5-2
Apparently the break had Calgary lose some of its impetus, as they lost the first match 5-2. Nano was the first one to score and bring Chicago on the board. Kotkakoivu shortly after tied the game. However, Bob, Schubbekuteveen and Nano netted for the Phoenix for a 4-1 lead at the end of the first period. The second period ended with a 1-1 tie, with Butts and Daniel being the marksmen for their respective team. It starts with Daniel's win at the draw in the offensive zone. The puck lands with Jokinen, the back passes to Tessier, back to the veteran defender. Erlantz to Gonçalves who snaps a shot, which is deflected by the Swiss forward. Pearce parries at the expense of a rebound. Jokinen digs out the puck and shoots, this time the Portuguese Wonderkind attempts a deflection, but Box blocks the shot. Daniel hoovers up the disc and shoots wide, Jokinen takes charge and makes an attempt on net, just to see his shot stopped by Johansson. Janser is first on the orphaned biscuit and buries it backhand over Pearces shin pads. The third period did not bring any change to the score and the Wranglers lost their starting game. Nano (2g/1a), Butts (1g/2a) and Skates (0g/3a) were named the three stars of the night. Dahl's (.886) rather underwhelming performance was effortlessly topped by Pearce (.933) all-star display in net. The Wranglers' power play was a no-show (0/4) but their penalty kill was without fault (3/3).
Marcel had 0g, 1a and -3 to his name
    Daniel was recorded with 1g, 0a, +0, 1 hit and 70.83FO%

    0-6
The Wranglers were not happy with their defensive play in the first much and swore redemption. And redeem themselves they did in an unanimous 6-0 victory over their rivals. Wolanin at the end of the first, Jokinen, Tessier and Gonçalves in the second and Strasmore with his first ever postseason marker as well as Gonçalves with his second of the night in the third frame sealed the deal for the Wranglers. The post game honours went to Jokinen (1g/3a), Gonçalves (2g/1a) and Dahl (29 saves). This time the roles between the pipes were switched and Dahl (1.000) clearly outplayed Pearce (.857). The Wranglers had no power play opportunity and obviously kept their noses clean during the five minors they took.
Marcel logged 0g, 0a, +1 and 4 PIM (Roughing, Double Minor)
Daniel left the ice with 0g, 3a, +4, 2 PIM (Holding), 2 hits, 1sb and 60.00% win rate at the draw.

The Jansers' stats for the S85 Playoffs as of yet are as follows:
    Marcel: 2gp, 0g, 1a, 1pt, -2, 4 PIM, 0 hits, 0sb, 0gwg, 0ppg
    Daniel: 2gp,  1g, 3a, 4pts, +4, 2 PIM, 3 hits, 1sb, 0gwg, 0ppg, 65.59FO%

Hello everyone! As the dust settles from the trade deadline and teams are beginning their final pushes up and down the standings, there is a lot for us to talk about. Although there wasn’t a lot of volume trade-wise, there were some very notable moves that may require a bit more analysis before they make a lot of sense.

First off is a bit of a boring one. Our first trade since September 4th. A pick trade even! Everyone’s favourite. Warsaw pulls out of this season’s first round and into next season’s, swapping places with Calgary. A very even deal in my opinion at this stage, obviously we don’t know who is going to be picked with these picks, or what assets they may be used to acquire down the line. But for now, a top team this season, swapping with what should be a top team next season.

    Calgary Receives:
    S86 WAR 1st

    Warsaw Receives:
    S87 CGY 1st

Our second trade is where it starts to get interesting. We should all know by now the situation in Helsinki this season. And for better or for worse, it makes the most sense to ship out the current squad and start fresh. As promising as they were, it is obvious that management had lost the support of the old guard, losing many to free agency, and with their trade deadline this season, they should be primed to start from scratch. Helsinki moves on from their younger VHL talent, and acquiring some players that should be joining the ranks in a few seasons. Malmo accelerates their rise to contention, and Helsinki smartly pushes theirs back. Notably, Helsinki also grabs 3 defensive prospects, a position they are notably lacking in.

    Helsinki Receives:
    Doug Britton -  @Doug Britton
    Reid Johnson -  @TopTiddee2
    Tater Tottingham -  @Trunkxolotl
    S87 MAL 2nd

    Malmo Receives:
    Cobalt Burns - @Ledge
    Hammar Voss - @BOOM
    S87 HSK 4th

Here we have our biggest trade of the deadline. Once again involving Helsinki, and definitely their largest asset at the time. This one needs a bit of a closer examination because it might be a tad bit confusing at first glance. First, we look at the big pieces. Booberry for Davis gives both teams a 1000+ TPA goaltender in net for the rest of the season. Cap hits the same, draft year the same. But the most important part of this deal, and the reason for all of the other shenanigans, is the contract length. Booberry has another season left, although for good reason likely wouldn’t extend beyond that. Davis’s contract ends this season, and may choose to test free agency this offseason. If Davis resigns, this is obviously a huge trade for Helsinki, locking up a top tier goaltender. However if he doesn’t they at least have some consolation that they got some pick upgrades and a sneaky prospect in Juan Sano III. I think for now this deal leans heavily towards Davos, but there is lots of room for Helsinki to get value.

    HC Davos Receives:
    Xavier Booberry - @CowboyinAmerica
    S86 LDN 3rd

    Helsinki Receives:
    David Davis - @Josh
    Juan Sano III - @denns
    S86 DCD 2nd
    S86 HSK 4th

Our final trade of the deadline is a routine trade. An expiring asset for some return. Chicago adds a solid 6th forward to their lineup in their push for the playoffs, and Prague gets another prospect in their already incredible pool. Smart asset management by Prague, and definitely not an overpay by Chicago. Definitely not our most exciting deal of the deadline, but one that makes a lot of sense for both teams, and should hopefully help them both down the line.

    Prague Receives:
    Quinn Clark - @axtron

    Chicago Receives:
    Shane Lazeski - @Lazarus

And thus ends our review of the Trade Deadline! Helsinki wiping the board clean, hoping to rebound from a disastrous season, at least in the eyes of the public. Malmo accelerating their rebuild, taking advantage of a shallower European Conference. Davos locking up one of the league’s best goaltenders, and with some term to match. Prague continuing to stockpile young talent, waiting to break out as a powerhouse in their own right. Chicago adding another useful forward to their lineup. Calgary and Warsaw helping to inflate my word count. That’s all she wrote folks! Thanks for tuning and keep an eye out for lots of exciting new VSN content soon!

Since last we reported from our intrepid hockey exports, the regular season has ended and both brothers made it into the post-season without taking the detour via Wild Card games. This was expected for the undisputed VHLE-leader Vasteras with a 54-15-3 record and a +70 goal difference.

Not so much for the Wranglers who are in a rebuild phase. They showed a 36-32-4 record and a -2 goal difference. The team was offensively carried by Sakukoivu, Lazeski and Johnson. The former two broke their respective points total record and the latter blew his goalscoring record out of the water. Defensively, the Wranglers had to rely on their rookie netminder Dahl, who had a respectable debut season as well as rookie defenceman AirRig 'Pylon' GoodBrandSun.

The Jansers' final stats for the regular season is as follows:
    Marcel: 72gp, 13g, 34a, 47pts, +22, 116 PIM, 111 hits, 81sb, 4gwg, 7ppg, 5 three stars awards (2-1-2)
    Daniel: 72gp, 31g, 41a, 72pts, -10, 47 PIM, 150 hits, 140sb, 5gwg, 6ppg, 1shg, 55.79FO%, 12 three stars awards (6-3-3)

Both franchises experienced a sweep in their respective round 1 series. Alas, with opposite results. Vasteras did the sweeping and eliminated Cologne in four games (4-3, 3-2 (OT), 3-0, 5-2) and Calgary was swept by the Legion (4-2, 3-2 (OT), 2-1, 2-1). Unfortunately, Mike Szatkowski winner Kotkakoivu could not carry over his scoring knack into the playoffs and only contributed two assists in the four games.

The post season stats for the Swiss Hitmen show as below:
    Marcel: 4gp, 0g, 3a, 3pts, +2, 4 hits, 5sb
    Daniel: 4gp, 2g, 2a, 4pts, -4, 6 PIM, 3 hits, 3sb, 1 ppg, 49.66 FO%, 1 three stars award (0-0-1)

Calgary will load up on talent in the next season with the prospects Chicoine (top goal scorer in the VHLE), Gonçalves (a top ten goal scorer in his own right and amongst the ten highest scoring forwards) and Wolanin, who had also a respectable 55 points season with a positive +/-, few minutes served in the sin bin and 6 game winner. The trio accrued for a total of 24 game winners and all of them were in the top ten in that respect. It is save to say, that Calgary will have more depth up front than this season. On the defence, Marcel will join his brother in the VHL and give GoodBrandSun and Beach some relief, as he can be trusted to play boxplay with his defence-first mind set. The Wranglers will need further veteran help in their defensive end though. Some potential candidates are former Wrangler Jokinen who has an expiring contract and left torched soil after he publicly critized Helsinki's brass, Moscow's Power (though if the Menace manages to snatch the elusive cup, this seems unlikely), New York's Reinhart (also a rather wishful thinking transfer as the player has close ties to the Americans' management) and Toronto's Ixazaluoh (who played with the Jansers in the VHLM), all with expiring contracts and the necessary skill to boost Calgary's defence. We are confident that Kris Ricer will find ways to make Calgary competitive for the next season, be it with trades or with FA signings.

    Stay tuned for further updates.

It's appreciation week! I appreciate you! And you! And definitely you! Not you. And I most definitely appreciate you 😁

I don't usually write a media spot for Theme Week so I have to start off with saying I appreciate @Daniel Janser for telling me to fulfill the S83 Theme Week requirements by "kissing up to" and "bootlicking" you peeps on VHL 🤪

    Now then let's begin…

I appreciate @Spartan for being the first to reach out to me when I first joined VHL from randomly searching for a hockey simulation game on Google Play 😂 Appreciate for the warm welcoming effort and teaching me the basics, then trading for me and giving me a role with the Las Vegas Aces.

I appreciate @Crstats23 for being a bud in the Las Vegas Aces locker room and challenging me to raise my commitment level to improve my players.

I appreciate @dlamb for reaching out for the VHL S74 draft and teaching me how to build a proper scorer to dominate my draft class in S75 as a rookie member of the New York Americans.

I appreciate @Esso2264 for drafting me into the VHL and teaching me tons in the world of VHL, although we did not get anywhere with the New York Americans, I still had one of the best VHL careers created as a fresh VHL rookie. Becoming a top 4 franchise records player on an Original VHL team and having an outstanding 2 points per game career average in the Playoffs. Not many players have reached such an incredible feat in the VHL. I have to give GM Esso a lot of credit regardless of the lack of playoff and regular season success as a team.

I appreciate @G_Rush for being possibly my best line mate and a big reason for my first and only ever individual award.

I appreciate @thadthrasher for being a great teammate and locker room enthusiastic in an underperformed New York Americans team.

I appreciate @Arce and @Moon for picking me 6th Overall for S82 VHLM and giving me another chance to compete for the VHLM championship title, although unfortunately it ended up being a terrible throw and embarrassing loss; giving me a 2 for 2 in Finals Loser appearances 🤣

I appreciate @BOOM for an incredible Sig which I still use right now, I need a new Sig!

I appreciate @Ricer13 who put a lot of trust in me and traded up to pick me 5th Overall in the S83 VHL draft, perhaps saving me from another run with the New York Americans.

I appreciate @Shindigs for selecting me for the S82 World Juniors Championships Team Canada and help give me my first championship title and gold medal (although it won't show up in the records)

    I appreciate my S83 teammates in the Calgary Wranglers locker room @Jamomayo, @Lazarus, @Daniel Janser, @Phil, @DollarAndADream , @Big Bob, @Ben, @efiug, @jacobcarson877, @leandrofg, @assassin6898

I appreciate @Beketov and the BOG for the hard work in all the behind the scenes running the VHL.

And of course I appreciate @everyone (no I'm not tagging @ Members, that'll cause a major problem 😅) for making the VHL community such an enjoyable place to be a part of. Without everyone's enthusiasm, we won't be able to hold this league and this source of "entertainment".

Let's keep up the good work and until next time we have another Appreciation Week!

The Jansers played four and three games respectively since last we reported from them. Please find without further ado the relevant summaries.

    3-5
In the first game we are featuring in this summary, the Iron Eagles faced the Oslo Storm. Vasteras took an early lead, when Bridgers scored the only goal of the first period. After the tea, Vasteras scored two goals by Elsby and Chang (the latter in powerplay) for a 3-0 lead, before Oslo could pull one back. In the final period, both teams scored two goals each, with Gonçalves and Elsby being successful for the Swedes. The three stars went to Chang (1g/2a), Elsby (2g/0a) and Raider (1g/2a). Kennedy (.865) and Gaming (.909) had a mid duel between the pipes with the better end for the Vasteras netminder. The Iron Eagles' powerplay was decent (1/3) and their penalty kill was ok (3/4).
Marcel left the ice with 0g, 1a, +2 and 2 PIM (Hooking, no effect on the score)

    3-0
In the second match, Vasteras clashed with Cologne in a 3-0 win for the Scandinavians. Two of the rookies in the Iron Eagles line up collaborated the first (and game winning goal) in the first period for a 1-0 lead. Mathias in the second and Bridgers in the third put a lid on the win. Mathias (1g/1a), Gaming (15 saves) and Bridgers (1g/0a) were given the three stars of the night. It needs to be said, rarely has a shutout been as cheap as Gaming's in this match, but a shutout it was and hence he gets the win in the goalkeeping department over his counterpart Protagonist (.919) who showed no mean game themselves. Vasteras' powerplay was okay (1/4) and the boxplay obviously impeccable (1/1).
    Marcel was recorded with 0g, 0a, +0 and 1sb.

    1-3
In the third match up, Vasteras met the Bratislava Watchmen in a 3-1 win. Mathias and Retoslav scored for the Iron Eagles in the first, interrupted by Bratislava's intermittent equalizer. In the second period, Gonçalves on a power play scored the only goal for this leg of the game. The third period was without a goal, as neither team allowed many opportunities for the other to score. The places of honour went to Gaming (26 saves), Mathias (1g/0a) and Elsby (0g/1a). Gaming (.963) had the edge over Saucey (.906) on a high level standoff in net. The Swedes' power play was okay (1/4) while the penalty kill was once more flawless (5/5).
Marcel had 0g, 1a, +0, 2 PIM (Hooking, obviously no influence on the score board), 1 hit and 2sb to his name.

    4-2
In the fourth and final Vasteras match we feature, they had a rematch against Oslo in a 4-2 win. Chang with two goals, one of which on a one man advantage, brought the Eagles 2-1 ahead in the first period. After the intermission, both teams scored one goal each, with Elsby finding the back of the net for the Swedish team. Young set the final point in the third period with their 14th goal of the season. Chang (2g/1a), Elsby (1g/2a) and Young (1g/0a) were given the three stars of the night. Vasteras' back-up Byrne (.920) had Kennedy's (.911) number and added another win to his CV. The Eagles' power play was okay (1/4) and their penalty kill (5/5) proved once more, why it is one of the best in the league.
    Marcel logged 0g, 1a, +2 and 2 hits.

    4-5
The first Calgary match we feature was against the New York Americans and ended in a 5-4 win for the Canadians. The Wranglers took an early lead with Kotkakoivu and Lazeski scoring in the first period. In the second the Americans made on the score board with their first goal of the game. As same was bracketed by two Wranglers goals, the score after two periods was 4-1. Lazeski and Johnson found the back of the net for the Albertan team. In the third period, New York made an effort to tie the game, scoring three goals. However, Johnson with his second goal of the night thwarted such cunning scheme and won the game for his colours. The three stars went to Kotkakoivu (1g/3a), Lazeski (2g/1a) and Johnson (2g/0a). Dahl (.905) showed ex-Wrangler Vaughn (.868) who is boss in net. The Wranglers' special teams did not cover themselves in glory as the power play (0/2) as well as the box play (3/5) left much to be desired.
    Daniel went home with a 0g, 0a, -1, 1sb and 67.65 FO% record.

    5-2
In the direct rematch the Wranglers defeated the Americans in a 5-2 win. In the first period, Johnson with two goals and Janser with one secured an early lead in the game. Johnson's goals were 19 seconds apart, profiting from a double minor against Vaughn for Slashing. Both times Daniel provided the final pass. The young center scored his goal after Johnson missed the net and the stray puck ended on the Swiss' blade. Before that Johnson and him played thimble rig with the puck and the NY defence, passing the biscuit back and forth. Before the intermission, the Americans pulled one goal back to make the game 3-1. In the second period Kotkakoivu and Johnson with his third of the night extended Calgary's lead. New York managed to score a single goal in the third but the deficit proved to much to overcome for the Empire State franchise. Johnson (3g/1a), Janser (1g/2a) and Lamb (1g/0a) were named three stars of the game. Dahl (.946) was once more a safe harbour for his teammates and stood head and shoulders over Vaughn (.898). Calgary's power play was very efficient (2/4) and their penalty kill was spotless (2/2).
Daniel was recorded with 1g, 2a, +0, 2 hits, 4sb and 58.82% win rate at the hash marks.

    1-7
The third and final Calgary match featured in this issue is a 7-1 steam roll win over the Vancouver Wolves. Johnson opened the score after 17 seconds played and scored a second time in power play after Vancouver tied the game. The Wranglers went into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead. In the second period, Kotkakoivu and Lazeski scored, while Johnson completed his hattrick. In the third period Lazeski and Kotkakoivu bagged one goal apiece for the final score of 7-1. Kotkakoivu (2g/3a), Lazeski (2g/2a) and Johnson (3g/0a) were awarded the three stars of the night. Dahl (.955) dominated his opposite number Fuhr (.873) at will. Calgary's power play was efficient (1/2) and the box play impeccable (1/1).
Daniel had 0g, 2a, +1, 2 PIM (Hooking, no effect on the score), 1 hit and 57.69% succes rate on the draw.

Both Jansers are at the moment on a playoff seed. Here are their individual records for the season so far:
    Marcel: 48gp, 9g, 24a, 33pts, +16, 78 PIM, 71 hits, 54sb, 2gwg, 6ppg
    Daniel: 50gp, 20g, 17a, 37pts, -17, 33 PIM, 104 hits, 89sb, 4gwg, 2ppg, 1shg, 54.41 FO%

Stay tuned for further updates on the brothers' careers.

As the VHLE had some catching up to do, we will lose no more time and delve into the summaries right away.

    3-1
In our first featured match we see the Eagles taking two points from the Italian team in a 3-1 win. Gonçalves on even strength and Retoslav with one of his rare goals scored on the power play to give the Swedes a 2-0 lead before the first break. The second period was a 1-1 tie with Bridgers finding the back of the net for Vasteras. The three stars were awarded to Bridgers (1g/1a), Gonçalves (1g/1a) and Gaming (23 saves). The latter also decided the duel between the pipes with a whopping .958 save rate against Freeze's not really bad .912. The Eagles' power play was sub-par (1/5) and their penalty kill flawless (2/2). Marcel in a not so rare fit of mischief wrote 'Romani ite domum' on the away team lockerroom door. Clearly, the young Janser is a man of culture and knows his Monty Python.
Marcel had 0g, 1a, +2, 2 PIM (Roughing), 5 hits and 4sb to show for his efforts (and a dressing down from @Dil for vandalizing the lockerroom door) .

    1-2
The second match was against the Western neighbours of Vasteras the Oslo Storm and ended in a 2-1 win for the Swedish fraction. While match was entertaining for the whole length, people stuck in the traffic and arriving late did not get their ticket prize worth of goals to ogle at, since all goals were scored within the first ten minutes. Gonçalves and Janser with the game winner were deciding the match in Vasteras' favour. Gonçalves (1g/1a), Kennedy (42 saves) and Gaming (22 saves) were given the places of honour post-match. Kennedy (.955) saw eye to eye with Gaming (.957) with a teeny-weeny edge for the latter. The Eagles made their lives unnecessarily difficult with a lackadaisical performance in power play (0/5) and a negligent defence when playing one man down (2/3).
Marcel was noted with 1g, 0a, +2, 2 PIM (Goalie Interference, lead to the goal against), 2 hits and 1sb.

    5-3

The third encounter was against Geneva who decided this season to stop being a pushover and to actually compete, as they won the game 5-3. The Eagles took an early lead when Bridgers and Snakehole gave them a 2-0 lead going into the second period with two power play goals. Geneva came back with three consecutive goals of their own,two of which were scored in power play. Snakehole was able to tie the game early in the third, but Escobar midway through the period put the Rush ahead again. It was also him who scored on the abandoned net with fifty seconds left on the clock to put a nail in the coffin. The three stars were given to Escobar (2g/1a), Chicoine (1g/2a) and Snakehole (2g/1a). Gaming (.857) had one of his weaker games and had to hand the crown to Wilson (.929). Vasteras had a strong power play (2/5) the impact of which was somewhat nerfed by their rather mediocre penalty kill (3/5).
Marcel left the ice with a 0g, 2a, -3, 2 PIM (Hooking, penalty killed) and 1 hit record.

    4-0
In a perfect display of defensive skills, the Eagles sent the Storm home with a 4-0 loss. The Swedes went in front in the first period when Mathias scored after 31 seconds into the game. Retoslav scored the only goal in the second period during a power play. Bridgers and Snakehole (again on a man advantage) sealed the deal in Vasteras' favour. Gaming (25 saves), Snakehole (1g/1a) and Mathias (1g/0a) were given the coveted distinction for the three stars. Gaming had the upperhand with his shutout over a not too bad Kennedy (.915) who gave his team hope, until he had no hope left to give. Vasteras' power play was good (2/7) and the box play obviously immaculate (5/5).
    Marcel logged 0g, 0a, +0, 2 PIM (Cross-Checking, no effect on the score), 2 hits and 1sb.

    3-2
Daniel's Wranglers were facing the Toronto Legion in their first match, which ended in a tight loss for the Calgary team. Lazeski put the Albertans in front late in the first period. In the second the Ontarian franchise tied the game with a power play goal. The third period went 2-1 to Toronto. Lazeski found the back of the net in power play on the Wranglers' behalf for the temporary equalizer. Lazeski (2g/0a), Moreau (1g/2a) and Peace (1g/0a) were given the three stars awards. Dahl (.921) kept his team alive but had to bow to Lindbergh's superiority (.933). Calgary's weak power play (1/8) probably cost them the match as the penalty kill did almost everything right (5/6).
    Daniel had 0g, 0a, -1, 3 hits, 4sb and a 62.86 FO% to his name.

    3-0
The Wranglers faced the LA Stars in the second game we are featuring here. The final score was three nil Calgary in a well deserved win. The first period came and went with neither team being able to score. In the second period, Kotkakoivu scored two within less than four minutes, the first of which in power play. Johnson rounded the game off with a goal in the third. The three stars should not come as a surprise, looking at the stats. The Captain leads the charge (2g/0a), flanked by Dahl (15 saves) and Johnson (1g/1a). Dahl had a 'cheap' shutout but a shutout nonetheless and proved to be the master of Tot (.927) in LA's net. The Wranglers' power play was very efficient (1/2) and the box play spotless (4/4).
Daniel was noted with 0g, 0a, +0, 2 PIM (Roughing, no effect on the score), 3 hits, 1sb and 68.57 FO%.

The Jansers' stats for this season sofar:
    Marcel: 14gp, 3g, 6a, 9pts, +6, 32 PIM, 24 hits, 15sb, 2gwg, 2ppg
    Daniel: 12gp, 3g, 1a, 4pts, +0, 6 PIM, 18 hits, 10sb, 0gwg, 1ppg, 59.93 FO%

    2-5
The opening match for the Wranglers' season was against an also rebuilding New York team. Calgary dominated the game for the most part and got a 5-2 out of it for their efforts. Johnson opened the proceedings with the first Wrangler goal of the saison (is he allowed to do that?). Sixteen minutes later, Johnson hoovered up a lost puck and passed it to Janser, who one-timed it under the bar and lit it up for the first time this season. The Americans cut the lead by one before the horn. In the second period John Doe scored for the Albertan team, before the Dynamic Duo struck again. Johnson dug out his own missed shot from the corner and tried to score from an impossible angle, but Janser in front of the net displayed incredible hand/eye coordination and deflected the biscuit at point blank range, to leave former Calgary netminder Vaughn no chance to block the shot. In the third period, Kotkakoivu bagged a goal of his own for Calgary to take the win. The three stars were given to Johnson (1g/2a), Kotkakoivu (1g/1a) and Janser (2g/0a). Honourable mentions go out to rookie GoodBrandSun who scored two apples in his first game. If rookie Dahl in net for the Wranglers was nervous, he hid it well behind his incredible .946 saving percentage, clearly out stripping Vaughn's .891. Calgary's powerplay has still room for improvement (0/3), while their penalty kill has worked to perfection this night (3/3)
Daniel logged a 2g, 0a, +1, 2 PIM (Holding, no effect on the score), 1sb and 66.67% of face-offs won

    1-5
In their second game, the Albertan team faced the DC Dragons in a clear 5-1 loss. DC took the lead early in the first in a one man advantage. Before the intermission, Kotkakoivu tied the game. Unfortunately, that was it from the scoring department for the Wranglers. With one goal in the second and three goals in the third scored against them, Calgary proved to be no match for the Dragons in this encounter. Lavelle (2g/0a), Utonium (39 saves) and Kitson (1g/2a) were named the three stars of the match. The DC netminder (.975) outperformed Dahl (.881)by quite a margin. The Calgary power play was a no show (0/3) while this time the penalty killing left much to be desired (5/7).
Daniel finished the game with a 0g, 0a, +0, 1 hit and a 59.09% success rate at the draw.

    2-5
In their third encounter the Wranglers had to face the battlehardened veterans from Seattle in a 5-2 loss. Kotkakoivu opened the score after four minutes. Apparently this had the effect of poking a hibernating bear with a very short stick. The Bears reacted with fury and scored five consecutive goals, four of them before the period's end. Kotkakoivu then found the back of the net in the third for some damage control, but there was not enough time (and fight?) left to turn this game around. For the three stars the panel elected Petrenko (1g/2a), Williams (2g/0a) and Meridius (1g/1a). While Dahl's (.909) performance was decent, it was overshadowed by Flex' (.931). The special teams seem to be some sort of sore spot for the Wranglers as the power play was again inexistent (0/5), while the box play was ok (3/4).
Daniel had 0g, 0a, +0, 1 hit and 41.18% successrate at the hash marks.

    2-4
For the fourth match, the league decided to serve the last season's champion the Vancouver Wolves. Calgary dispatched of them in a 4-2 win. The Wolves took an early lead, winning the first period with two of their goals against Lazeski's first of the season. Johnson took it upon himself to score the equalizer in the second period. In the third, it was Lazeski who brought the Wranglers in front, and with 10 seconds left, Johnson delivered the Coup de Grace in the empty net. Lazeski (2g/0a), Johnson (2g/0a) and Kotkakoivu (0g/4a) were named three stars of the night. Fuhr (.893) in Vancouver's net was outclassed by Dahl (.949). Again, the power play proved to be inefficient (0/2), while the penalty kill allowed nothing (3/3). Ricer is well advised to look into the game with a man advantage, if this weakness should not bite the Wranglers in their ass in the long run. It is now 13 penalties and counting where nothing tangible materialized.
Daniel was recorded with 0g, 0a, -1, 1sb and 63.64% win rate at the face off.

    2-3
The fifth game was a rematch of last years seven games series against LA. This time the Wranglers had the better end for them in a 3-2 win. The first period was by for the most eventful with both teams scoring a brace each. Johnson and GoodBrandSun with his first VHL goal were responsible for the production on Calgary's side. In the second period, it was veteran winger Johnson again who scored the game winner for his colours. For the three stars Johnson (2g/1a), Kotkakoivu (0g/3a) and GoodBrandSun (1g/1a) were chosen. Dahl was given a rest day and Blazevicius (.935) played instead and showed Tot (.925) who is boss. This time the power play was one for one and the box play two for two.
Daniel had 0g, 0a, +0 and 69.23% success rate on the hash marks.

    2-3
In this revenge game it was the Bears who woke up a sleeping giant. Contrary to the Wranglers, they still managed to win this tight match 3-2. The first period went 2-0 to Seattle. In the second Lazeski was the only goal scorer. During the final period, Seattle extended the lead before Janser scored on power play with 43 seconds left on the clock. Kotkakoivu wins the face-off in Seattle's zone, the puck comes straight to Janser who one-times it into the net, to give the Wranglers a sliver of hope. Detroit did not even get his button on the bench in the sin bin as it took the Calgary team two seconds to convert this penalty. Unfortunately, time ran out and the Wranglers were not able to tie the game. Chara (1g/2a), Petrenko (1g/2a) and Janser (1g/1a) were awarded the three stars of the night. Dahl (.935) stood on their head to give their team a fighting chance and even though he won the battle of goalkeepers against Flex (.923), it was sadly not enough to steal any points. The power play was okay with 1/4 and the penalty kill was good with 8/10.
Daniel skated into the sunset with 1g, 1a, +1, 2 PIM (Goalie interference, no goal scored during the ensuing penalty), 3 hits and 47.06% success at the face-off.

Calgary is seated fifth in the NA-conference, ahead of last season's conference finalists Vancouver and LA.

    Daniel's stats so far: 6gp, 3g, 1a, +1, 4 PIM, 5 hits, 2sb, 0 gwg, 1ppg, 57.69 FO%

    2. Our rookies are sick and the future is bright for the team.
    3. Hard to say but as long as we're winning I'm not too worried.

    2. Losing Tater Tot is a tough but we got the number one goalie in the draft and he'll be a large asset to London for years to come.
    3.  It would have been nice to get Sven back but like I said, the roster looks better than last year.
    4. I'll defiantly utilise it, I always used to do it which really helped my TPE.
    5.  I honestly didn't hear about it
    6. I don't really care about my individual stats I just wanna win. It'll be a tough season but with a couple moves I think we can compete for a spot.

I'm saddened to share with you all that Emi, former LVA AGM and the user behind Emi Rune and Emiko Spector passed away last night due to cancer at the age of 26. I don't really know if it's my place to share, but I don't know who else would. The official post went up in the PBE where she was most active, serving as rookie mentor head and also Co-GM'ing/GM'ing teams as well. Find that here.

Here in the VHL, Emi was known for her podcast, Rune Rambles, with her partner, Dren (Lilith Lunar). I've had nothing but good experiences communicating with both her and Dren, and others can attest that they were both very kind people who were passionate enough to spend time in our community despite the issues they had to deal with. My condolences go out to Dren and Emi's family during this time.

    Rest in peace, Emi.

After a season and a half in the VHLM, playing for two teams, and capping the experience with a Founder's Cup, it's time for the rookie experience in the VHL.

    THE VHLM (S78-S79)

Getting selected 2nd overall in a draft class with alot of premium young talent, his expectations are through the roof.  Getting his feet wet with a cup of coffee with @dlamb's Ottawa Lynx in S78, putting up eight goals and 16 points in 18 games, he knew he could hang in there with more skilled players like AJ Williams and Shane Lazeski, and hold his own.  He was good enough to get picked by @InstantRockstar's Miami Marauders in the 2nd round at 13th overall, and was part of a team of VHLE bound talent consisting of Mikey Markov, Hari Singh Nalwa, Jloyd Bloyderson, James Glove Dropper, Logain Ablar, Em Em Flex and Alessandro Nano that was contending for the majority of the season.  The Marauders loaded up with a very skilled roster en route to the Founder's Cup final, taking out the top-ranked Mississauga Hounds in a surprisingly short five-game series.  In the 18 game quest for the Cup, he put up a very worthy 20 playoff points with 8 goals.  He even had a tryout for the newly-created expansion league VHLE team Istanbul Red Wolves in a brief draft lottery tournament, getting picked to play by GM @KaleebtheMighty .  He struggled mightily, playing behind some VHL caliber players, only getting an assist in the short tournament.  Fire also did get to showcase his skill in the World Junior Tournament.  He was selected to play for his home country Team Canada, and did a decent job playing behind some older players, getting two goals and five points in eight games for the Canadians.

    THE S80 VHL DRAFT

Heading into the draft, he had a big choice to make.  Either head to the VHLE and develop there, or head straight into the VHL.   He took into account many factors, mostly his performance with the Red Wolves and with Team Canada.  He did ponder if he would be able to compete at the VHL level early, but only for a short while.  While he could have probably been a good player in the VHLE, his made his choice when the Toronto Legion selected him 2nd overall.  After getting selected, GM @Peace had the talk with Matty "Are you coming up or going to the VHLE?"  He knew that with plenty of ice time available in Toronto that he could have plenty of time at a young age to figure things out quickly, and be a part of Toronto's leadership core going forward.  So he made the choice to play in Toronto.  He even got drafted the very next day back to the Istanbul Red Wolves after having answered some VHLE GMs and posting a status update saying he was going to play in the VHL with Toronto.

"The goal is simple.  Get good, fast.  I'm looking forward to playing with some great players against great players, especially Asher Reinhart.  They've been around the league for awhile, so I have a good chance to be great too."
