JigglyGumballs 1,056
Look ma! I achieved something for once! Joking aside, I'm a VHLM GM now. It's honestly a bit of a dream come true, and after finding out of my hiring while waiting for my order in a Burger King, I think it's time I take a bit of time to reflect on what lead up to this moment. No this won't be a grand tale of uphill battles, trials and tribulations or any of that bullshit, but rather a tale about taking opportunities. Which of course, always comes with a sprinkle of luck. Just because I'm a GM now doesn't mean I'm not a first-gen. Yeah I've been in this league for quite a while now, but I'm still going through the career of my first ever player in the VHL. I joined the VHL on June 12, 2020 after my irl buddy @PatrikLaine asked if I wanted to join the VHL. I'm not exactly sure what lead up to me joining, but I'm pretty sure it was just a regular afternoon conversation over instagram or discord that lead up to me joining. I remember actually being a bit hesistant on joining, especially since I literally had no idea what I was doing. I'm sure Laine is tired of me saying this but when I first joined, I didn't quite look up what to do or what guides should I read. All I did was literally ask Laine about everything. Being the good friend that he is, he gave me all the advice I needed for the time being and I joined the Houston Bulls late into S72. Under the management of @Sonnet (Who I dare call my senpai) at the time, this team is what basically got me hooked onto the VHL. The S72 Bulls with Laine, @DreMin15, @MattyIce, and @KnightRiley were honestly something. One thing you have to consider about that team, was that the team fucking sucked. Yet somehow, whether it was because of the (then) newbies like me riding that new user enthusiasm or something else, we managed to build an active team. Though by the end of the season, Sonnet had become the VHLM's Commissioner and @rjfryman came in as the new, and current Houston GM. I remember DMing RJ back then, asking if he planned to keep me since I was eligible for the dispersal draft. Some time later after being drafted to LA and Ottawa, I'd DM him again asking if he was looking for an AGM. Looking back at it now, I feel a tad bit embarrassed for reaching out mostly because I feel like I was a bit desperate(?) to stay a part of the team. Though it was during those conversations where I first started getting actual advice on how the league works from a managerial perspective. Ever since those days in Houston, I wanted to ultimately become a GM, and naively I wanted to do so before my first player retires. So in all honesty, those talks with RJ mean a lot to me. So I'm genuinely grateful that he actually took a bit of his time to talk to me and encourage me to go for tournaments like the WJC. In the meantime during all that, I was applying for all sorts of AGM jobs. Both VHL and VHLM. I specifically sought after AGM jobs because I thought that learning under a GM was the best way for me to ultimately become one myself. Plus being an AGM was a lot more long term of a position than compared to GMing a WJC team. I think I missed out on 3-4 chances before as luck would have it, I was finally given the opportunity when I hired as the AGM of Las Vegas. What I find oddly coincidental between my hiring as Vegas's GM and back when I was initially hired as AGM was that the timing is very similar. I was hired before the S74 VHLM draft, and after three seasons later, at around the same time I would be hired as the GM of LVA. But before that, let me first talk about the very person who's given me every opportunity and who I owe my current VHL career to. @Spartan didn't even know that I was (and still am) a highschooler when I was initially hired, yet I couldn't ask for a better mentor other than him. Since when I first came as AGM, Spartan had taught me everything I needed to know and has given me all the opportunities of actually applying the knowledge he's taught. Including a memorable draft stream trade flub which I honestly will never forget because it was that stupid. I've yet to make another mistake similar to that but now that I'm a GM, I feel like I'll probably do the same kind of fuck up this coming draft. I always felt like I was part of Vegas since the beginning, this team has become a new home for my heart since Houston. I've always been particularly close to the VHLM, so to not only become a GM, but to GM the team I would frankly call my home is a bit of a dream come true. I know I've done nothing but express my thanks today, but I'll fucking do it again. Thank you. To everyone. It took a bit but I'm finally here. I'll sure as hell excited to see where I'll take Vegas to next, and whether or not that involves winning a cup I don't know. All that matters is the draft ahead and what I can bring to this team. KC15 340
Congrats @JigglyGumballs! I hope you don't draft me in Las Vegas though. Only because I don't think you've got a 1st round pick and I'd like to see Tessier's name called in the top 12. lol But one of the things I love about the VHL is that a high schooler could theoretically draft a nearly 60 year old fart and the fart would follow the leadership of the young dude.
