I'm slogging through a few books right now...

Fiction:

Malice by John Gwynne

The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson

Writing related non-fiction:

Dreams and Wishes by Susan Cooper

A Hobbit, a Wardrobe, and a Great War by Joseph Loconte

I do a combo of physical books, Audible and Libby. Very occasionally ebooks.

Bran Sand, my beloved. You'll have to let me know what you think and I'm very curious about the second nonfiction you mentioned. Probably about the war, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkein?

I’m reading Assassin’s Code by Jonathan Mayberry.   Book 4 of the Joe Ledger series.   Pretty good

also reading Tne Gray Man by Mark Greaney.   Re-read for me but good story to get lost in.

I've read Sanderson's Legion series and The Emperor's Soul - all very good. I knew it would take me forever to get through the Stormlight Archive so I've been putting it off (I've been stocking them up on Audible). So far not a huge fan of the narrators unfortunately.

Yes, the Loconte book is about the socio-economic and philosophical state of Europe and the world leading up to and during WW1 (and WW2) and how it influenced their writing. So far pretty interesting. Listening on Libby.

Stormlight is long, for sure. I’m fortunate that I’ve always been a very fast reader so I can mow through things pretty quickly. I used to listen to more audiobooks at my previous job but I don’t so much any more.

I’ll have to see if I can get that at our local library!

Literally just finished The Last Ronin, a Ninja Turtles omnibus. As a lifelong fan of the franchise, it was truly a "holy shit" experience. Very much returning to the roots of the characters with its grittiness. Absolutely riveting and heartbreaking throughout all 5 issues. Tremendous work.

  • 4 months later...

I've had a good start to my reading this year.

Malice - John Gwynne

Voice of War - Zack Argyle

The Magician's Nephew - C.S. Lewis (reading it to my 11-year-old)

Wheel of the Infinite - Martha Wells

The Darkest Part of the Forest - Holly Black

I just read this! I'm really eager to get into the next book, as I found this one really compelling. What did you think of it?

Got a Kindle a couple of weeks ago and have read more in two weeks than I have in the past 12 months. On a 7 day reading streak, which is 7 days longer than my last streak.

Currently reading Knife of Dreams and then will finish the 4 other books in the series. It'll probably take me roughly a month to read each book, so we'll see where I go from there.

3.5 for Darker Shade is wild to me. The world building is off the charts.

Your reading list makes me think you'd enjoy Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell though.

You've gotten past the roughest parts of the series, which is noteworthy. Enjoy!

Ha - to be fair, I started reading the series in 2019 and last started Knife of Dreams in...2021? Pretty sure it was when I was in my last apartment and didn't read it in my house. Maybe 2022 at the latest.

My rating may be skewed due to the narrator, I'll admit. The world building I do very much enjoy. The second book has a male and female narrator and I am enjoying them more. So I think I'm going to end up rating book 2 a little higher.

The opening of Book 2 is *chef's kiss*

Lila is an icon, IMO

Currently reading Sunrise on the Reaping (hunger games .5) about Haymich's quarter quell reaping. To be honest my wife bought the book at Barnes and Noble and I snagged it before she could start.  I do like being back in the Hunger Games world and getting to know Haymitch before the booze filled mentor of the main series.  A true underdog in every sense of the word who showed great intelligence and I found that despite some lulls I really enjoyed the story.  An insight into some earlier games and the secondary characters were great too.

Finished book #100 of the year so far, so here are my 5 star reads up to this point:

- An Honored Vow by Melissa Blair, final book of the Halfling Saga series

Immortal by Sue Lynn Tan

How High We Go in the Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu

All Systems Red, Artificial Condition, and Network Effect by Martha Wells, books 1, 2, and 5 of the Murderbot Diaries series. All rereads and just as good as the first time!!!!!!!

LegendbornBloodmarked, and Oathbound by Tracy Deonn, books 1-3 of the Legendborn Cycle. First two were rereads and BETTER the second time.

Funny Story by Emily Henry

Seven Days in June by Tia Williams

The Foxhole Court, The Raven King, and The King's Men by Nora Sakavic, initial trilogy in the All for the Game series.

This is How You Lose the TIme War by Amal El-Mohtar & Max Gladstone. Also a reread

Seeing these two ratings side by side kills me LOL two of my favourite authors in the game right now but 4.5 stars for Weir's worst book and 3.5 for one of Schwab's best hurts.

this is craaaaaazy ???? ADSOM series is my least favorite of their work. Vicious is literally right there

I'm a prime Vicious enjoyer, check my Favourites shelf on Goodreads. I just think ADSOM is 2nd, ahead of Addie LaRue, Gallant, etc.

A few books that I've read recently that I enjoyed:

The Examiner by Janice Hallett

This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone

Godwin by Joseph O'Neill (I think this book may have been created in a lab to appeal to me specifically)

I Have Some Questions For You by Rebecca Makkai

I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy

Haven't quite been able to keep up my pace from the end of last year as I've been finishing grad school, but I've been reading more lately. Currently reading Yellowface by R.F. Kuang, which I'm just over halfway through but have really enjoyed so far.

Only gave this four stars on my first read but after getting to the end I think I'm definitely going to have to give it a reread at some point. Really creative book.

I'm making my way through the Dungeon Crawler Carl series, currently on book 6.  I'll have to keep up with this thread for future recommendations!

GODDAMNIT SLOTH

I am making my way through part 7 myself, love em that much that im currently collecting the hardcover editions as they come out.

My favourite book series of recent times,  and maybe even surpassing the GFL series from Scott Sigler and the Dune series on my all time list.

From quickly looking at your posted list, i have added 'The downloaded' and 'Divine Dungeon' to my to-read list on goodreads, so will get there eventually.
