Regression vs forced retirement

It would appear that the call for freedom and realism is not very strong.

And if people are so concerned about maintaining the history of the league, I feel like whoever updates career stats should be paid a hefty sum of TPE. :P

I presume you claim something for it?

I talked to Higgins about it at some point but he never confirmed anything. I didn't really care too much because it would have been going on to the retiring Keiji Toriyama (at least, a few season's worth of it), so I didn't press him into giving me compensation.

It isn't even about records. It's about users who want a longer career with their player, or a more realistic career length/arc. Everyone in the VHL basically retires in their prime with max attributes lol. Every VHL player retires as Barry Sanders.

How many people do you know of that want 20% depreciation? That's the only way it could stay remotely fair and it would make having a player that old be completely terrible.

I think high depreciation and a removal of carry-over would be the only way this could work. You want a long career, fine, but you'll suffer your last two seasons and end up with nothing for your next player. No thanks if you ask me.

I still don't like that BTW, I still think it would hurt the records more than it's worth, but that's the only way it could work.

My initial suggestion was 13% depreciation in 9th season, increasing by 6% thereafter. The decreased carryover was something I had also thought about.

But that's the idea. Make a longer career rather undesirable, but give people the option. Perhaps also make an extra season be something that you have to purchase from the store.

Also, since you're so concerned with the records, even with ten seasons of his average, Phil Rafter would have been 91 goals and 124 points short of Scotty. That's the closest anyone (aside from those who played in the old times) would have been.

Average NHL career is actually 5-6 years, so we are actually unrealistic by going over the amount of years played.

Glad we've settled that then, no extending careers.

You misunderstood what he was saying. When you pointed out that the average NHL career is 5-6 seasons, that's because you have to include guys who only play a couple. When calculating the average VHL career, you would also have to include guys who only play one or two seasons.

If anyone is curious, I've calculated the average career of a skater in the VHL to be 4.26 seasons. That doesn't include current players, and I didn't count anything less than 20 games to be a season (players who played less than 20 games were not included at all).

1. A rule could easily be made to stop this.

2. Good luck finding a team

Well you could bank entire season and basically add after depreciation to still have a semi decent guy. You only need 90 points really to make a 70-70-70 and just play for whichever team isnt going for playoffs, they have cap room.

Fine, then return to my first point. It's an easy thing to work around.

Wait, did someone it this thread mention it's unrealistic that someone plays 8 seasons and retires in their prime?

Is it more realistic that someone plays 8 seasons and is in their prime and then suddenly turns to shit?

Okay, so we have Devise saying even with 13% regression, players will remain the best in the league, and you're saying 13% would lead to "suddenly turns to shit." Hmm...

Devise is wrong and his opinion is irrelevant.

To clarify, suddenly turning to shit meaning someone in their prime leading the league in scoring with 120 points and then scarping 80-90 after one off-season. Realism! So important in our intercontinental, 2-game-a-day league.
