Final Review

Well, folks, the season is officially over. The regular season, check. Playoffs, check. Founder’s Cup? Well, if you are the Ottawa Lynx, check, check, and check on all of the above. Performing absolutely triumphantly all season, the Lynx have completed the well deserved Prime Minister’s/Founder’s Cup duo, ending the playoffs in emphatic fashion by sweeping second-seeded Yukon Rush. Let’s see just how the final four games went down, starting with Game One.

A close affair, Game One ended by just a single point. In fact, the Rush outshot the Lynx significantly, 36 to 28, including a dominant 17 shot second period. Joakim Bruden, the goalie for the Lynx, was a key part in this Ottawa victory, earning a .917 SV% on the game. In fact, despite the barrage in the second period, he held the Rush scoreless, allowing the Lynx to quickly come back and even take the lead with a brace from Big Chungus. The third period was very hectic. Yukon tied it up with ten minutes left to play before a slew of penalties led to back to back to back goals; first Ottawa to take the lead, then Yukon to tie it up again, and finally Adam Syreck to win the game for the Lynx in the 16th minute. Power-play goals accounted for four of the seven goals in this game, with Ottawa being particularly lethal, capitalizing on 3 of their 5 man advantages. Zyrock12 performed well this game, the defenceman earned third star for his goal and assist pair, but it wasn't enough.

Game Two was less close, at least by the end of the game. Ottawa blitzed the Rush early, outshooting them 15-1 in the first period, jumping up to a quick 2-0 lead by the first intermission. The Rush responded well in the second, however, scoring three unanswered goals to actually take the lead. But with only six seconds left in the period, VHLM vet and now two-time Founder’s Cup winner with the Lynx Aamon Grim equalized, setting the stage for a dominant Ottawa third period. They found the back of the net four times, including the latter two goals in an Adam Syreck hat trick, and the Lynx shot up to a quick 2-0 series lead, perfect on home ice to start the finals off strong.

Game Three found the Rush fighting to stay in the series, as going down 3-0 might prove all but fatal. They started decently; despite giving up the first goal they quickly turned it around, with Ray Sheilds scoring once and assisting once to take the lead entering the first intermission. Unfortunately for the Rush’s home fans, the rest of the game wouldn’t be so kind. Striking three times, including a game-tying and game-winning goal from the aforementioned Grim, the Lynx quickly took the game into their own hands. The third period remained scoreless, with neither team showing much fight. Just a single penalty and six shots apiece, and the game was over.

Enter Game Four. What would prove to be the tightest match thus far, both team’s goalies put on a showcase; especially Yukon’s Nicolas Fomba, whose 41 saves from 44 shots was good for a .932 SV%. Unfortunately for the Rush, it wasn’t good enough. The first period saw a deluge of pressure from the Ottawa forwards, with 19 shots on goal. Only one found the net, directed in by Big Chungus. Come the second period, Yukon stayed firm, with Vin Calia and Mickey Dickson scoring. Dickson would be the last Rush player to find the back of the net this season, however. The third period saw only two goals, both of them Ottawa, with Grim scoring the game-winner, series winner, and cup winner six minutes into the period. The Rush were unable to answer, and thus, our Season 71 Founder’s Cup champion is the Ottawa Lynx! Congratulations to the whole team, as well as GM @DoktorFunk and former GM @Acydburn for the phenomenal performance.

Good read. Well written with great details in regards to the action. Each game broken down giving us detail and important game changing moments. Worst part of the writing is that Yukon lost. :)

8.5/10
