Hey VHL and welcome back to another look at the best shootouts of the regular season, this time around I didn't know if I was even going to do it but I need a media spot and third times the charm right? To start things off let's take a look at the best goaltending gladiators who didn't hesitate and won the extra point for their team..

     Best Goaltenders

🥉 Andrew Bowman recovers after giving up the first shot and outsmarts the opposition by reading the next three in a battle with D.C.
    https://vhlportal.com/vhl/79/VHL79-481.html

Doug Dimmadome tracks the puck on all three shots with his chest and leaves no room for error, giving his team the chance to score in a comeback victory against Prague
    https://vhlportal.com/vhl/79/VHL79-517.html

Zamboni Driver stays tuned in after a great display from both netminders during the game but uses his momentum to motivate himself, stopping three straight shots versus the Phantoms with the glove and blocker
    https://vhlportal.com/vhl/79/VHL79-140.html

Kevin Malone has a remarkable showing as he sprawls out to make a couple of shots and finishes the shootout in Vancouver with a huge blocker punch to keep the puck away from the goal line
    https://vhlportal.com/vhl/79/VHL79-206.html

Artem Tretiak leaves the crease and challenges all three shots from the Wranglers, using his blocker and toe to win it for his team on the last move
    https://vhlportal.com/vhl/79/VHL79-493.html

🥈 Jacob Carson replaces the starter and finds himself in a duel against D.C. but doesn't let the pressure get to him, using his hands and pads to seal the deal with a trickling five hole save
    https://vhlportal.com/vhl/79/VHL79-454.html

Kunibuni UnGuri flashes the leather and stops three straight shots in the crease, keeping his team in it and helping defeat some of the Stars elite shooters
    https://vhlportal.com/vhl/79/VHL79-103.html

Kunibuni UnGuri reevaluates after making a few close stops and like a sniper he stays focused, swinging his arm in the air and catching the shot to win it for his team again against some tough shooters in Los Angeles
    https://vhlportal.com/vhl/79/VHL79-198.html

ClapbombsRUs grabs and holds the puck on a couple of dangle attempts and stops another with his leg to keep his team in it and eventually get the win versus a frustrated Helsinki squad
    https://vhlportal.com/vhl/79/VHL79-177.html

Sirkants Klamasteris comes out on top with three saves and a wild display of acrobatic skill, defeating a New York team who had just as much blood and seat put into the game
    https://vhlportal.com/vhl/79/VHL79-564.html

🥇 Sirkants Klamasteris flips the switch and goes beast mode turning aside four different types of shots after giving up the first goal, motivating his teammate on the next shot and merging their efforts for the shootout victory against the Dragons
    https://vhlportal.com/vhl/79/VHL79-31.html

Next up is the best goal scorers that took it to the next level..

    Best Shooters

🥉 Sven Reikkinen shows off his creative maneuvers and intensity in a nail biting finish as he takes the rubber straight toward the crease, using a well timed snap shot under the glove it was the Wolves goalie who would end the night embarrassed and confused
    https://vhlportal.com/vhl/79/VHL79-322.html

Lee Xin and Julian Nousiainen give their best efforts and score a pair of hard slappers but it was Dan Dan, Nathan Perry and B-CGY LW2 who would strike harder, sealing the deal with long pinpoint snap shots through a juggling and fumbling Chicago goaltender
    https://vhlportal.com/vhl/79/VHL79-503.html

Nathan Perry brings the crowd to their feet after signaling them to get hype, he slowly dances the puck into the Legion zone and slides the puck through a backed up netminder for a hardworking but electric crowd pleaser
    https://vhlportal.com/vhl/79/VHL79-366.html

Kristof Welch skates in on the left side and fakes a slapshot short side, after that it's history as the puck slowly slides into the right side of the net with smooth and fast deke move before the goaltender could recover
    https://vhlportal.com/vhl/79/VHL79-282.html

🥈 Justin Lose and Cabe McJake shock the crowd with well prepared hard wristers as they utilize the strong side of the ice and launch their pucks through an unready goaltender
    https://vhlportal.com/vhl/79/VHL79-35.html

Aloe Dear and Victor Grachev duel it out against MuffBeav, Taylor Mourning and Arthur Dayne in one of the best highlight reel producing shootouts but it was the Predators who didn't have enough energy left and ended up giving the other team the dub
    https://vhlportal.com/vhl/79/VHL79-226.html

🥇 Jeffrey Pines must have worked on his dangles during the off-season because he completely robbed the HC Davos crease guard using a combination of fake shots, change of speed and a wicked backhand shot that would ring off the top post into an empty net
    https://vhlportal.com/vhl/79/VHL79-406.html

And lastly here's a list of the quickest and longest shootouts of the regular season..

    Best Quickest/Longest

🥉 Magnus Verlander and Gary Rush do the netminder dirty and speed dangle it into the net so fast we needed a slow motion repay to watch their moves
    https://vhlportal.com/vhl/79/VHL79-521.html

Magnus Verlander and Gary Rush find a way to end things early and collect the extra point versus a tired Legion using smart shots that went under the elbow and through the armpit
    https://vhlportal.com/vhl/79/VHL79-199.html

Taro Tsujimoto and Addison McLaren quickly end the shootout with a couple of close calls against an all-star goaltender who fumbled them but ended up hitting the rubber into net
    https://vhlportal.com/vhl/79/VHL79-239.html

Robert Bouchard and Riley Knight Gee destroy any chances of a comeback using a fancy deke move on the first shot and on the second shot we see the defenseman launching a direct slapshot right into a stretched glove but it trickles out and over the line
    https://vhlportal.com/vhl/79/VHL79-453.html

Justin Lose and Cabe McJake don't play around and use their skating to get the netminder out of position for some easy goals
    https://vhlportal.com/vhl/79/VHL79-59.html

London United and HC Davos Dynamo battle it out in an 8 round shootout using the whole roster and a few appearances from the post, in the end it was the blue and red that would find success after That Dude and Alec Volchenkov snap crazy bullets into the center of the net on opposite sides
    https://vhlportal.com/vhl/79/VHL79-63.html

🥈 Moscow Menace and Seattle Bears extend the shootout to 8 rounds and show off the skills of their shooters, Valterri Vaakanainen, B-Seattle C2 and Dolant Fertitta, Duncan Idaho, Kyle Glass, they all brought their A game but it was a Moscow dub in the end because of their excellent patience and more prepared bench
    https://vhlportal.com/vhl/79/VHL79-219.html

🥇 Riga Reign and Moscow Menace have a goaltending epidemic with 10 huge saves from Papa Emeritus and Matthew A Sovick Jr. who kept their teams in it for 7 rounds, the Menace come out on top though after their goaltender shutouts the competition with an insane out of position glove hand grab right on the line
    https://vhlportal.com/vhl/79/VHL79-404.html

Thanks for tuning in again for my third addition of the BSOTRS, see you next time

In all honesty, much respect to the Bears. You guys made the adjustments and had us worried. You guys had a great season and I'm sure you'll be back for more.

Valtteri Vaakanainen @Jubo from one captain to another, you played a hell of a series and led your team by example with heart and grit. We fought twice this series and it was an honor to drop the gloves with you. I respect you and admire your career and leadership and enjoyed our battles over the last few seasons. Enjoy retirement.

The Stage Is Set: The S79 Continental Cup Preview
     Seattle Bears VS. Malmo Nighthawks

After a glorious pair of Conference Finals that both went the distance, the Seattle Bears and the Malmo Nighthawks emerged victorious in their respective Game 7s to earn the right to compete for the fabled Continental Cup! The S79 edition of the Cup Final features a rematch of the S68 Cup Final (which will be discussed in further detail below) and winners of two of the last four Cups. This is the first time since S73 that the top regular season team in both conferences has made it to the Final.

As always, VSN breaks it down for all you VHL junkies who are eagerly awaiting the curtains on the league’s grandest stage to open.

Before we continue, VSN would like to congratulate the Warsaw Predators and the Los Angeles Stars on fighting down to the last buzzer and providing such entertaining hockey! The Stars seesawed with the Bears all series, alternating wins until Seattle prevailed 4-2 in the seventh game. Malmo jumped out to a 3-1 series lead before Warsaw’s stars took back control with two huge wins to tie up the series before the Nighthawks tightened up in Game 7 to win 3-1.

And now, we set the stage…

    The Teams

    Seattle

For a little over a decade, the Seattle Bears have been the VHL’s model franchise for playoff consistency. GM Blake Campbell @Banackock has nurtured a seemingly unstoppable groove of drafting and developing stars and filling holes left by departing stars with more stars thus creating a desirable culture and an impeccable record in the post-season. The S79 Cup Final will be the Bears third in a row and 7th Final in 12 seasons. Their five Continental Cup wins alone are more than any other team has even made the Final in that span (Helsinki, Malmo – 3). A busy off-season that saw the acquisition of two-time league MVP and leading scorer, Andrew Su @Da_Berr, and the signing of this season’s playoff goal leader, Jungkok @tfong, built the foundation for Seattle’s success thus far. The Bears roared into the postseason with a league-best nine-game winning streak.

    Malmo

Conversely, the Nighthawks haven’t been able to build momentum from their two Cup Final appearances, a sweeping loss in S68 at the hands of Seattle and their first Cup Championship in S75. Mediocracy followed and even with HOFer defenseman Condor Adrienne @OrbitingDeath  leading the way, sustained success has been hard to come by. But this looks different somehow. In adding savvy veterans to a smartly-drafted young core over the last couple of seasons including winning the Gunnar Odinsson @BOOM sweepstakes in free agency in the off-season and acquiring blueliner Scotty Kaberle @fromtheinside early on, GM Christopher James @hylands has built a dynamic and explosive team that easily won the Victory Cup with the league’s best record and is just entering their prime. While Malmo’s focus is on being one of the top offenses in VHL history, there is also a commitment to defense and a rock-solid man between the pipes who isn’t afraid of a little rubber.

    The Rivalry

While the Bears’ and Nighthawks’ rivalry is a young one it is rich with intrigue. Their only other playoff battle was in the S68 Continental Cup Final where a soon-to-retire Matt Thompson, one of the greatest players in Seattle’s history, signed with and led the upstart Nighthawks to their first Final in only their third season. Despite Thompson’s effort (leading the playoffs in goals and points), Seattle stymied Malmo in a four-game sweep, denying Thompson the chance to leave the VHL a champion.

A reverse situation is playing out in S79 as Jungkok, Seattle’s free agent prize, who played 205 games with Malmo and helped them win their only Championship in S75, is in his final season and currently leads the playoffs in goals and points.

How this scenario plays out remains to be seen.  Seattle is the more experienced team but Malmo won all four regular season tilts with the Bears by a combined score of 13-5.

    The Offense

Malmo gets the edge here as they produced 314 goals during the regular season, the 5th-best total in VHL history since S20. Gunnar Odinsson had one of the best performances in recent memory with 57 goals and 133 points. Brendan Telker @Telkster actually led the team with 58 goals with three other forwards scoring 27 or more goals. They scored the most power play goals in the league with 99 and were 2nd in PP% with 26.54%. Malmo’s depth has propelled them to the Final with ten players contributing seven or more points with Odinsson’s 21 leading the team. Of concern to the Nighthawks, is their goals for in the playoffs, understandingly yet disturbingly, have dropped from 4.36 to 3.31 over a full goal-per-game and their power play has only managed nine goals for a 17.31% clip.

Seattle’s offense was potent and diverse throughout the regular season. They produced the third-best offense with 283 goals and had five different players score 33 or more but with no one scoring more than 41 (Andrew Su). Battle-tested Valtteri Vaakanainen @Jubo led the team with 97 points. They tied two other teams for the 2nd-most power play goals with 88 but were sixth in efficiency at 23.16%. Like Malmo, their depth is their strength with nine player having scored eight or more points and seven have double digits compared to Malmo’s three. But their goals-per-game has gone up slightly in the playoffs and are the top team in that regard at just over a four-goal-a-game clip. They’ve scored 15 goals with the man advantage behind only Warsaw and are operating at 22.06%.

    The Defense

The two Final’s combatants are even more closely matched defensively. During the regular season, Seattle allowed the second-least amount of goals (219) and had the second-best penalty kill (80.98%). Malmo was third and only slightly behind in both those categories (225 GA, 80.31% PK). On route to the Final, Seattle has been the stingier team allowing 2.92 goals against to Malmo’s 3.15 and the Bears’ penalty kill has been 83.33% efficient while the Nighthawks have only killed off 78.57% of the opposition’s power plays. Malmo also needs to stop giving up so many shots to the tune of 42.5 a game. Seattle is only allowing 35.25 per game. The Bears’ defense corps is a more veteran and experienced group with a higher offensive ceiling, while the Nighthawks employ a high-energy and effective system that utilizes their underrated blueliners’ speed and youth.

    The Goaltending

These two Russian S75 draftees (Rara Rasputin @Victor, 16th OV, Artem Tretiak @Molholt, 39th OV) are set to match each other save for save where the smallest misstep can cost their team a win. They have different styles but produce similar results. Rasputin relies on his size to swallow up rebounds thus resulting in fewer chances for the opposition. Tretiak plays a more athletic, reactionary style that produces more shooting chances but more often than not he stops the next shot as well. Both goalies have had brilliant seasons with Rasputin showing a slightly higher GAA in both the regular and postseason while Tretiak has posted the higher save percentages largely due to Malmo’s high-octane offense allowing more shots (he had 50+ saves in three out of seven games against Warsaw). Rasputin already has a Cup and has played in over twice as many playoff contests as his counterpart but Tretiak has come up clutch when the Nighthawks have needed him most.

    The Talking Points

Jungkok/Seattle vs. Malmo: Who will gain more momentum from playing each other? Jungkok facing his old team with which he won a Cup in S75? Or will revenge be a dish served cold as Malmo avenges their S68 sweep?

Odinsson vs Jungkok: Jungkok is on pace to have one of the most electrifying postseason goal totals in VHL history already with 14 while Odinsson should have another gear. Who will provide the most offense?

Secondary Scoring: Both teams have players who need to step up to their regular season production. Malmo’s Muffbeav @.sniffuM and Seattle’s Vaakanainen haven’t been bad but they should be contributing more.

Rock’em Sock’em: Seattle’s Isabella Campbell @Banackock and Malmo’s captain, Druss Deathwalker @animal74 love to mix it up. Both lead their teams in playoff hits and penalty minutes but are also contributing on the score sheet. Who will have the larger impact or will they neutralize each other?

Rookies Rule: Malmo has four rookies who have been utilized and chipped in while Seattle has two. This is the biggest test of their lives. Who will step up? Who will disappear?

The Nighthawks and the Bears are fairly evenly matched so winning the Cup will come down to special teams, mental mistakes, drive and heart. Seattle is looking to cement their franchise legacy with another mini-dynasty employing a veteran-laded roster. Malmo wants to prove the regular season was no fluke and start a dynasty of their own. The VHL’s grandest stage is set. The players are in the wings ready to play their parts. Stay tuned, folks! The show is about to begin!

Infernal reacted to Telkster in Malmo finish on top
    Intro
It’s been quite the year for this still young Malmo team, who battled vigorously all year to get to this point. While celebrations were on a couple days ago when they found out they won the league, they know to take these lightly. There’s a long road ahead in the playoffs. Lots of work is left to do, and not many nights out with the boys just yet. Malmo finished the year with 314 goals in 72 games. They had a 53-19-0 record, which tells us immediately that they never lost in overtime or shootout this year. That could come in handy for the post season. Today I’ll just be running down the roster from forwards and try to point out some highlights from the season as I go along. I want to be detailed so that I can go over every player. Next week I’ll go over Defense and Goalers.

    Forwards
Odinsson turned out to be more then just a key signing, Malmo is where he really found his legs, leading not only the team, but the whole league in points with 133. In my last article, Odinsson had almost all the awards locked onto him. While he will still have a very decorated awards show, Telker came from behind late to grab the trophy for most goals this season with 58, which is near the ludicrous point.

You could argue that Sosa’s breakout year was his last season in Vancouver, but he went with a lot more then just a ppg this year with 94 points. Muffbeav had an incredible season and added to the scoring depth this team has with 46 goals and 93 points. Then we get to Deathwalker, who had a great leap from his sophomore campaign to 76 points from his 58 points the season before. Dayne did exactly what he needed to do in order to give the forward group a winning chance with 37 points.

Were down to the rookies now, and Mourning have a great rookie season with 29 points, given that he was a depth piece all year. Steel had 10 points in his rookie year, but that production should increase as he moves along in his career.

The future of the forward core is in really good shape, with only Dayne leaving this off-season. League scouts have seen Muffbeav recently practicing in the faceoff dot during quieter times at practice, which could mean that him and Sosa could tandem as a 1-2 punch at centre. This would let Mourning move up to the top 6 permanently, while Steel could rotate around as the #7 forward next year. This is all just my speculation. But it would allow the forwards a comfortable transition without making a big move. Hylands could still choose to add another depth type piece if he does want another body up there. There’s also a small possibility that a rookie forward could find his way onto the team. That’s it for this media spot. To all the forwards in Malmo, great work this season, and congratulations to everyone who helped get the team this far!

S78 saw the underdog Nighthawks take another step forward in their rebuild/retool. They made the play-in round for the second straight year and this time advanced past Helsinki to the next round only to lose to eventual champion Warsaw. Many players took great steps in their development and the future is exciting for this young team from Malmo! Announcing the S78 Malmo Nighthawks Team Awards as voted by the players and management.

    Condor Adrienne Award (Best Defenseman)
    Randy Marsh @oilmandan

The truculent Marsh was his usual self and made sure he was even more of a pain in the ass in his final VHL season. He led Malmo defensemen in most categories and helped the Nighthawks become the only team this season with two 300+ hitters. He matched his career-high in goals with 18 and set career-highs in shots (228), penalty minutes (260), hits (312), and blocked shots (162). He also was a stud in the postseason posting career-highs in goals, assists, and points with a point-per-game showing (3-7-10) in 10 games. His 260 penalty minutes also led the league and he finishes his career 6th all-time in VHL history with 1450.

    Rookie of the Year
    Tui Sova @v.2

Drafted 7th overall in the S78 Draft, the skilled defenseman from Fiji provided an instant boost to the Nighthawks’ blueline. He worked his way into a Top-3 role and became reliable in all areas of the game. His offensive game improved as the season went along collecting 8 goals and 32 assist for 40 points which put him third in scoring among all rookies. Defensively, he handled himself with poise and assertiveness as he placed second on the team in blocked shots (169), third in penalty minutes (108) and fourth in hits (148).

    Unsung Hero
    Carson Walkers @Cwalker

Walkers blossomed into a consistent source of secondary scoring and defensive acumen all season long as the third-year winger set career highs in most categories. His 21 goals were fifth on the team and he chipped in five power play goals, three game-winners and converted both of his shootout attempts. He also provided grit with 162 hits, good for third on the team and was tied for second on the Nighthawks with a +18.

    Most Energetic
    Druss Deathwalker @animal74

Deathwalker saw steady improvement in his sophomore season and his non-stop motor caused havoc for opposing teams. He doubled or tripled his numbers from his rookie season scoring 23 goals on 288 shots both numbers fourth on the team. He also led the league with a monstrous 374 hits and was 7th in penalty minutes with 191. This is his second straight award.

    Most Gentlemanly
    Kevin Wu @kevinscix

Although he had a down year offensively, Wu nevertheless was a solid contributor at both ends for Malmo with 35 points and 123 blocked shots. He was also a quiet leader and his calm demeanor carried into the locker room and on the ice. His calmness also attributed to him only taking nine minor penalties all season in spite of playing over 18 minutes a game.

    Most Valuable Player
Muffbeav @.sniffuM, Brendan Telker @Telkster, Artem Tretiak @Molholt

This was the most contested vote as three of Malmo’s stars fittingly tied for the award for Most Valuable Player. Muffbeav and Telker led Malmo offensively all season with Muffbeav flirting with a goal-a-game pace for the first quarter of the season. Telker led the Nighthawks in points with 90 and Muffbeav led the team in goals with 45. They were both among league leaders for goals and shots with Muffbeav leading the league with 531. Telker was also among league leaders for power play goals (14) game-winners (6) and hat tricks (3).

Tretiak held the fort between the pipes and announced to the league he was a bonafide starter. He led the league with a sparkling 0.924 save percentage and was Top-5 in shots against and shutouts. His focus and determination helped power Malmo through rough stretches and into the playoffs.

    Nighthawk of the Year
    Druss Deathwalker @animal74

Deathwalker garners his second Nighthawk of the Year award on the heels of his first season as team captain. Proving that he wasn’t just all boast and bluster, he accepted an increased offensive role and still led the league in hits while providing boisterous energy on the ice and an encouraging presence in the locker room. He strives to help his teammates get better for the good of the team and the ultimate goal.

    3-Stars Award
    Muffbeav @.sniffuM

After such a sensational season, it’s no surprise that Muffbeav claims Malmo’s 3-Stars award for S78. He led the team in goals and shots and created offense from everywhere and thus he was selected 1st Star a team-high nine times. He also had a team-high 17 star selections for a total of 380 points. Although, his co-MVPs Telker and Tretiak weren’t far behind with 330 and 310 points respectively.

Infernal reacted to Telkster in Malmo: The El Huevo Update
    Malmo tops Helsinki
Day 1 of the playoffs came as a bit of a shock to Malmo, as they quickly found themselves down 2-0 in the series. However, in a Montreal Canadiens fashion, they managed to win 3 games in a row, and overcome the play in round that seemed like anything but rosy just a couple days ago. Then the wins started to come for Malmo. And they had a granddaddy of a game 5. 7-4 was the final, with Telker just doing Telker things. He managed a hat trick while getting the game winning goal. Dayne, Sosa, Kamenov, and Muffbeav all had multi point nights in game 5.

Malmo have a nice mix of young and old on the team, and players from all age categories helped contribute. Dayne, Muffbeav, and Telker have all replicated the success that they had in the regular season, as those 3 sit on top of the Malmo scoring lead for the post season. Sosa has been pulling his weight in this series, with a tidy 5 points in 5 games. Every game, win, or dare I say series win, is all going to be gravy for the Nighthawks. Now that the play in round is settled, Malmo have a date with Warsaw in the conference semi final. The bright side for Malmo, is that their season record against Warsaw is 4-1, so no one should expect Malmo to be an easy out.

    The Off-season and Beyond
With Marsh leaving after the playoffs, and Muffbeav announcing he will be stepping away, Muffbeavs ghost should be sticking around for a while, and will still be a massive help in the years down the road. In my opinion, Malmo need to fill about 4 positions in the off-season. While that may seem like a difficult task. It may not be as hard as it seems. The bright side of this is that 3 of the 4 positions should be pretty easy to fill.

The first is the backup, and that’s no harder then finding the next best goalie in FA. As for the forwards, they’re fine hanging out and growing for now, but just one more depth piece of a 400 ish tpe guy should be no problem as well in FA. The defence is going to be a bigger hole to fill, but if they can lock onto a young ish d man in FA, maybe with around 500 tpe, then that would be a big win. I think the last piece that is needed is a stud d man, and while Sova can be that in the future, it would be a big help to get one now to help grow alongside Sova. That’s a big laundry list, and while the GM may have a slightly different version of how the off-season should go, I don’t think he would be far off from that. Malmo’s young talent should help attract middle aged and younger FA’s to the Nighthawks.

That’s it for today’s update, and to my fellow Malmo teammates, just keep on worshipping El Huevo.😁
