What a difference a week makes we now have twenty-two prospects out of the thirty needed for three rounds listed on our draft board. We also saw fifteen players show signs of improvement in the pre-season leading up to the opening game of Season 38. Today we are here to highlight the four prospects at the top who had already logged in over one-hundred hours of practice and the season hadn’t even started. There are plenty of other honorable mentions in Tyson Stokes, Andrew Erikson, and Jose Canseco but that is for another time. Today is about those four that already have their eye on the first overall draft selection. F – Jackson Miller – Canada First up we have Jackson Miller who will probably garner the most attention throughout the season. He is part of the Beketov Agency dating back to the inaugural first season of the VHL with Robert Sharpe. Recent memory saw us with another goalie in Evgeni Chekhov who while dedicated to his craft never panned out for one reason or another. Heading into the first week of the season Miller seems to already have that X-Factor that teams like to build a franchise around. Though he is listed as a winger he looks like a true playmaker that might have talents best suited as a center. His near future is no question he will be a VHL starter day one come Season 39. Many would say he is nearly VHL ready currently. If there is one knack on Miller is that some question his long term viability he could burst onto the VHL with Rookie of the Year potential and eventually plateau. D – Mikkel Boomgaarden – USA Boomgaarden has VHL pedigree backing him as well. The Boragina Agency founded by well-known VHLer Matthew Boragina is also responsible for recent retiree Yuri Grigorenko. Mikkel Boomgaarden is a big solid defenseman that moves with speed and agility that you wouldn’t expect from his 6’5” 222lb frame. I’d say he will also be VHL ready once the Season 39 Draft is upon us later this summer. Early scouting reports have Mikkel as a predominately offensive D-man who still has the physical tools to get the job done in his own end and in the corner. He reminds us of recent VHL Rookie of the Year candidate Slaeter Fjorsstrom who has had great success in his early career with Riga. The same lingering concern as Miller sits with Boomgaarden. Expect an explosion onto the VHL scene with the potential for a mid-late career ceiling that could stall out their careers. F – Tyrone Williams – USA Yet another top prospect in this draft with ties to great former VHLers. This time Tyrone Williams from Koradek half fashion designer half VHL player agent whose most notable players include Pavel Koradek and Alexander Valiq. Could this be another home run player or could this be the player that too falters after appearing to be a can’t miss prospect. Unlike Miller whose build as a playmaker Williams is more of a possession, gritty, and grinder type player. Imagine that without the desire to actually hit during the play. That’s right Williams actually prefers to instigate fights and do his talking after the play without throwing his body around. He is a goal scoring, puck handling, smooth skater, and likes to play mind games. D – Koji Yamazaki – Japan Last but certainly not least is the rare hockey specimen from Japan. Coming in at an astounding 6’4” his countrymen all flee in his presence he is the hottest VHL prospect right now. There is no backstory to who and where he came from other than the fact he declared for the VHL Draft and is one of the best prospects in it. Yamazaki is the prototypical defenseman with a big frame and not afraid to throw his body around. He could be an asset on the powerplay but is usually an offensive liability. His strengths are in his own end clearing the puck and causing turnovers in the neutral zone. He moves very well for his size and is a guaranteed top five pick right now. I’d go so far as to say Koji goes in the top three in the Season 39 Draft and has a VHL roster spot waiting he won’t be in the minors after this season.

Goalie Experience Rating: Start at 40
Mike replied to CoachReilly's topic in Suggestions and Complaints
The real thing is as long as every goalie starts at 35 it doesn't matter. You could make all goalies start at 50 but as long as its consistent theres no advantage or disadvantage to any other goalie. The relation of a goalies play to a skater isn't exactly something you can compare so it doesn't matter. -
Damn im not playing so good but offense is doing decent

If this league was young enough there could be a possible debate but after 37 Seasons of 8 years then forced retirement this is one can of worms that we can't open.

A mere four days ago the NFL and VHL held their draft on the same night. It was a surprise to no one that the VHL had the bigger audience and following as the notably superior league. What may shock people though is that after just four days of the Season 38 Draft we are already starting to talk about the Season 39 Draft. The VHL is quite the cyclical league and as Season 38 approaches a few teams already know that the Season 39 Draft is their best chance because this season is a lost cause. Anyway as time moves on and the big rig of scouting starts too slowly churn into motion like a train we will learn everything about these prospects. Where they went to school, what they eat for breakfast and even their dead goldfish from when they were little nothing gets past the VHL scouts. Right now though the only thing we know is who is in the draft and if they were at all successful in high school or random minor leagues. Before we get into what we know about this new crop of draftees we want to look back just a little. We want to see overall how the class is looking thus far in terms of potential depth and superstar status. At any given time the Season 38 Draft Class had about 8-12 players who were showing signs of improvement. We also know that the draft had more than 30 players in it enough to fill a full three rounds of players. So far the Season 39 VHL Draft Class has 19 players signed up according to the S39 Draftee List. Of those 19 potential VHLers we have a good 13 who have already shown signs of improvement since declaring for the draft. This gives us currently an on par number of potential active draftees but overall we are lacking in sheer number. Since the VHL has expanded to ten teams we have always been able to fill a full three rounds. It is the responsibility of every league official to bring in new talent to help the league grow. All is not lost though for those who are not familiar with the VHL Draft Rankings we don’t have the absolute most up to date numbers on prospects. We use the S39 Draftee List which is updated on occasion by Victor usually weekly and currently doesn’t have the list of all draftees especially in the last few days. The list also doesn’t yet notate which draftees have attended the most recent VHL off-season workout programs. Without further delay onto a brief talk about the draft as we know it so far. The Season 37 Draft had top end talent in Tom Slaughter and Slaeter Fjorsstrom that we may have never seen before. This draft is has a couple of prospects in Mikkel Boomgaarden and Jackson Miller who have that same kind of amazing top end talent. After them there are three other top five first round talent prospects in Tyrone Williams, Tyson Stokes, and Koji Yamazaki. Some interesting prospects with previous agents in the league are Splorg Hansburgersteinewalden (boulder) and Milos Denis (Tyler). In addition to the top end talent and returning agents there is a good amount of new agents who have already started to gain some notoriety. These players that will make or break the draft are Hunter Backenbauer, Braxton Hunter, Dylan Raseri, and Lights Brokan. Stay tuned for future editions where we get to know the players more. We can also follow the season and find which prospects make it through the grind of a season to see their name called into the history of the VHL. What we know so far though is the first round of the draft looks pretty good but we do need some more prospects. As far as the positional breakdown last draft saw an amazing defensive draft class Season 39 only has four so far. This looks to be an offensive heavy draft with only one goalie that has shown any promise either.
