  3. Following a successful rookie season in which Poole was named an All-Star and proved his worth for the future of the Toronto Legion, he is only building upon his performance this season and, in just his second season, is already looking like an elite defenseman in the VHL. He currently is third in points for the Toronto Legion with 52 through 44 games while also leading his team in assists. His 52 points also are tied for third best among defensemen and his 42 assists are fifth best throughout the entire league. And although his offensive talent is clear, he is also excelling defensively. His 148 hits rank him just outside the top ten while his 109 blocked shots are third in the league. Although the Legion are still solidly behind the Wranglers for the third playoff spot in the conference, there is reason to be excited for the young franchise. Goaltender Fedir Okranitz, selected fifth overall this off-season is expected to make his debut next season and with such a young, strong core group of players, the Legion are on track to become one of the most dangerous teams in the league.

  5. VHL This Week Season 41 Edition 5 Welcome back to VHL This Week! We're well past the halfway point of Season 41 now and with the trade deadline approaching, it will be interesting to see which teams are able to make some moves that will help them win the ultimate prize! Announcements The trade deadline is approaching and will be at 8:00 PM EST this Saturday, the 10th! Stay tuned and watch for some big moves that could change the shape of competition in the VHL as we near the playoffs! Round 2 of the writing ranks has concluded! Stay posted for the beginning of round three, which will feature the top four participants! The Super Cup will take place at the end of this season! The competition will feature players from around the VHL and VHLM competing in a fantasy-style competition that will be sure to add some excitement to this off-season. Game Discussion The first game we will take a closer look at is this matchup between the Vikings and Reign. Although the standings would indicate the Reign would easily win this game, it turned out to be a very close one. Riga came out of the gates ready to go, taking a 3-0 lead less than four minutes into the competition thanks to two goals and an assist from defenseman Phil Villeneuve. The Vikings defense was forced to tighten up and after about eight minutes of keeping the dangerous Reign off the board, they were able to score one of the own as Leon Leitner found the back of the net after collecting his own rebound. But the Reign would score a heartbreaker with just ten seconds to go in the first period to conclude the final frame with a commanding 4-1 lead. But Stockholm was not ready to go down so easily as they started the second period strong and were rewarded with a Sam Keeler goal just over a minute into the period to cut the lead back to two. The rest of the period was filled with back and forth action but lacked any additional goals as Riga continued to hold off the Vikings. With two minutes left in the third period, Tyrone Williams cut the deficit to just one goal but it would not be enough as the Reign came away with the 4-3 victory. Next we have a cross-conference battle between the Americans and Titans. The Titans, eager to put on a good show for their fans, scored first, just a minute into the game, off a Tyson Stokes one-timer. Although the Titans continued to dominate the period, it would be the Americans who scored next as Jody 3 Moons found twine for the 23rd time this season. The first period would conclude with a 1-1 tie but the Americans would waste no time building upon their momentum as Christopher Klose scored a rebound goal less than 30 seconds into the period. 8 minutes later, former defenseman Conner Low scored to double New York's lead. With the two goal lead, the Americans put it upon themselves to control the game as Brick Wahl was a brick wall the rest of the game to help his team hold on for a 3-1 victory. Finally, we have another cross-conference competition between the Seattle Bears and Cologne Express. This one would be a low scoring affair as two solid defensive teams faced off and wouldn't budge all game. While Andrey Zadorov helped the Express strike first just three minutes into the game, this matchup was essentially the Niklaus Mikaelson show. Despite the early goal and the lack of help from his teammates, he kept the Bears in it until the very end, turning away an incredible forty of forty-one shots and displaying why Seattle used the first overall pick on him. Although just a rookie, this game is a clear example of why he very likely is the next big thing in the VHL. Despite the loss, he even managed to overshadow the Express' Blaine Olynick, who picked up a shutout in the win. 6. Winter Has Arrived Although he's enjoyed a long career in the VHL, Tony Stark has never been one to stick around for long or even to be more than a role player for each team he's been apart of. Selected with the fourth overall pick by the Dynamo back in the Season 35 Entry Draft, many envisioned stardom for the young German defenseman. And after a tremendous rookie season in which he scored 64 points in 72 games while playing solid defensively, it appeared he was well on his way to perhaps even exceeding his potential. Yet that off-season, he was traded along with two first round picks for Davey Jones as the Dynamo looked to make a Continental Cup run. But just 45 games into a disappointing sophomore season, Stark would head to his third VHL team - the VHL Americans, a team with which he would spend the next two and a half seasons. With the Americans, he would continue to fail to play at the same level he did his rookie season, scoring just 102 points in 171 seasons. Stark burst onto the VHL scene in Season 35 as one of the league's top rookies The Americans eventually cut ties with the veteran defenseman, sending him off to the Calgary Wranglers for rookie defenseman Jack Ryan and a second round pick. Not expecting much out of Stark aside from filling a significant hole on the blue line, he logged the third most minutes of anyone on the team, leading the Wranglers with 54 assists while scoring 75 points in just 72 games. He also displayed strong defensive play, picking up 120 hits and helping Calgary to the playoffs, where they eventually were defeated by the Bears in the first round. Nonetheless, Tony Stark seemed to have been reinvigorated, his play reminiscent of his superb rookie season with Davos. As a result of his season, the Wranglers gave Stark a three year extension that would keep him locked up through Season 42, his final season of VHL eligibility. Stark's next season with the Wranglers was tumultous as he was largely ineffective despite receiving plenty of opportunities to shine. Many questioned his commitment, wondering if his previous season's performance was simply due to it being a contract year or if it was all just a fluke. Although the Wranglers as a whole had a tremendous season, securing the third playoff position in the North American Conference, Stark certainly did not. Coming off a career year, Stark posted just 40 points, one more than his career low of 39 while scoring just 6 goals, easily a career worst, to go along with a miserable 1.86% shot percentage. His defensive game faltered as well, failing to even come close to the defensive statistics he put up in the previous season. And he did not improve in the playoffs, either. Despite a surprising first round upset over the Quebec City Meute in seven games, Stark struggled and managed only 3 points in 12 playoff games. It seemed as if he would be like so many that came before him, a player once highly regarded who only faded into obscurity, never truly playing at the high level so many had expected from him. Stark was unable to live up to expectations with New York, forcing him to answer difficult questions about his place in the VHL. Yet this year, it seems as if something has clicked for the aging defenseman. Perhaps a result of experience, luck, being in the right place at the right time, or a combination of all three, Tony Stark is, for the first time, playing like a truly elite defenseman. Through 42 games, he is the only defenseman in the VHL to rank among the top ten in points for defensemen, shots blocked and hits. In fact, he ranks among the top four in each of these categories and is pacing scoring for his position with an impressive 58 points through 42 games, more than the likes of pre-season Labatte Trophy favorites Matt Bentley and Mason Richardson. Stark's incredible play has helped the Wranglers to what is currently the third best record in the league and should help Calgary continue to secure their place in the standings and hold off the surging young Legion, who sit at fourth in the conference. No Wrangler has more minutes than Stark this season and it is no surprise why - he very well may be the key to their cup hopes. Tony Stark is finally coming into his own with the Wranglers and is looking to help lead his team to the Continental Cup this season. Some still call it a fluke. Other see it as a talented player finally meeting expectations. Whatever it is, Stark has played at tremendously high level this season and has not slowed up against all odds. This journeyman may have finally found his place in the league and, if all continues, his place in VHL lore and he should be the unquestioned favorite in the race for the Sterling Labatte Trophy as the league's best defenseman. It has taken four different teams and seven seasons and while his season has left many dumbfounded, Tony Stark is the real deal and is no longer a player opponents can take lightly - winter has arrived.
  7. I can do it over the next couple days if you'd prefer it was done earlier, plus Smarch already got one
  8. Taylor Marie Hill, easy, even though I'd never heard of here before. But anyways, was anyone else creeped out by that last gif? She looks like the devil or something...
  9. Happy you guys got me to join haha! I don't even remember the name of it anymore but that football sim was going to be my last if it didn't survive.
  10. Well I mean the skater statistics (not sure about goalie) are dominated at the top by early league players, who were better than the rest of their competition from day one as opposed to at least two seasons into their VHL career as even the best are now. So not sure how legitimate that argument is.
  11. I guess it's time to reflect on the last year in the VHL! I joined this spring, not really sure whether I would stick with the league. In fact, I don't think I've ever been in a player sim league that has even survived more than two or three seasons since I joined or that I've actually stuck with for that long. It seemed to me that I tend to lose interest pretty quickly when other people in the league do but with the history of the VHL, I figured why the fuck not. Well, I'm definitely loving it but being overseas for about 5 months of the 8 or so I've been in the league, I haven't had a lot of time to do much besides earn points, which does suck a bit considering this league does have a great community. So my New Year's resolution for the VHL is to become a more active poster once I return home in mid-January, which I hope I will have time to do with balancing school, a job, and even a social life and a girlfriend. Nonetheless, I'm thankful for the time I've put into the league so far and I think the VHL has a lot more to offer than what I've gained from it so far!

  13. VHL This Week Season 41 Edition 4 Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and get ready for New Years! We're at the halfway point of the season now and at this point, the standings are fairly set in stone. Barring a late season surge, we virtually know all the strengths and weaknesses of every team, setting up for a long grind before the playoffs. But that doesn't mean there isn't still excitement to be had as there are plenty of outstanding individual performances, as always. Announcements Don't forget to like the Christmas Gift Post for a free doubles week! Make sure to check out Edition 222 of the VHL Magazine! There's still a bit of time left to vote for the second round of the writing ranks - plenty of good material here so don't miss it! Game Discussion First, we'll take a look at a very close matchup between the Titans and Legion. This one looked to be Helsinki's day from the start as they dominate the first period. While they were unable to get on the scoreboard, shots were 9-3 in favor of the Titans at the end of 20. The second period was more even with the Legion waking up from their slumber to give the Titans a challenge. Perhaps caught off guard by this seemingly new team, Tyler Cote was able to quickly score the game's first goal after Jerrick Poole handed him a perfect pass after intercepting a Jake Wylde pass to put Toronto up by one. But this would not last long as just over two minutes later, Willem Janssen scored his fifteenth goal of the season following a pretty tic-tac-toe passing sequence to knot the score at one. After more back and forth action, rookie Sachimo Zoidberg put the Legion up 2-1, a score that would hold up for the rest of the second period. But the Titans would come back ready to go in the third as Jake Wylde made in 2-2 early in the period, making up for his earlier mistake. Although Helsinki controlled play, they were unable to score again, forcing overtime, albeit a quick one as Devin Sundberg secured the win for the Legion off Steve Tremblay's faceoff win. Next, we have a game between one of the league's best in Calgary up against cellar-dwelling Stockholm. This game pretty much went how you would expect - utter dominance by the Wranglers. But, things did not start out very easily for the Wranglers as their 18-6 shot advantage did not yield any goals and the first period ended with the score at 0-0. But Calgary figured things out and Marcus Hurley picked up a loose puck given up by Kez Kincaid and found the back of the net to take the one goal lead. This would begin an onslaught of goals as the Wranglers found themselves up 5-0 at the end of the period thanks to another Hurley goal, two from Lukas Nykvist, and one from Kez Kincaid. While the win was all but a formality at this point, Calgary added a couple more goals to seal the deal. Within a span of just over a minute, The first was a beautiful one, with the puck going through virtually the entire team before Andrew Erikson received a perfect pass and picked up a goal. Then, Jakob Linholm tipped in a Lukas Nykvist shot to seal the deal with a 7-0 win, giving Martin Brookside a shutout to continue his strong season. Finally, we have a matchup between the top two teams in the European Conference - the Reign and Express. This was a big one as the Reign are trying to further increase their lead over the Express while Cologne desperately has to make up for the ground lost earlier in the season. After controlling play in their offensive zone for around a full minute, Azi Ali connected with Bennett Wahl, who put the puck past Mike Szatowski Jr. for the first goal of the game. About four minutes later, Azi Ali scored on of his own to give the Express a two goal lead. Just a minute later after a Slaeter Fjorsstrom trip, Thomas O'Malley picked up a powerplay goal to get his team ahead by three. The rest of the game would be a back and forth battle but neither team could find the net as Blaine Olynick came up big to earn the shutout and help the Express move up in the standings. 14. A Goaltender Away From afar, it would appear that the Legion still have a long way to go before being considered a legitimate threat in the VHL. They have a very mediocre record, barely earning more than a single point per game and currently sit 13 points behind the third place Wranglers, well outside playoff position as we approach the midway point in the season. They are one of four teams who have a negative goal differential and while the Legion's is not quite as bad as that of the Bears, Dynamo, or Vikings, -11 simply is not cutting it. On top of this, Toronto is an extremely young team with only two players not currently in their first or second season in the VHL. To put it frankly, it seems that the Legion have a lot of work to do if they ever hope to win a Continental Cup with their current core group of players. Upon closer inspection, though, this team is not as far off or even nearly as poor as one would think. Although they have a very young roster, most of these players are very much VHL caliber and able to play with anyone in the league. On top of that, Tyler Cote, Sachimo Zoidberg, and Jerrick Poole are already among the top talent in the league and proving that with fairly gaudy numbers. That is not to discount the rest of the team either as the Legion already have one of the deepest rosters in the league. Tyler Cote is already establishing himself as one of the league's most well-rounded players. In addition, the Legion have played even some of the best teams in the league remarkably tightly, despite what their record would indicate. Of their nineteen losses this season, Toronto has lost just seven by more than a single goal and only two by more than two goals, both of which were in the first five games of the season. Over a third of the team's games have required overtime and they have a .500 or better record against the Wranglers, Titans, and Express in addition to each of the other three teams outside of playoff position. The most obvious thing about the Legion, though, is their need for a goaltender. They are one of three teams without a regular starter in addition to Davos and Stockholm, all of whom likely will not make the playoffs this season. This is not a coincidence, however, and this need for Toronto may be the one thing holding the team back. Having a subpar goaltender required them to employ a more defensive strategy, hindering their ability to showcase their wealth of offensive talent and leaving the Legion unable to utilize their biggest strengths. With a reliable goaltender, they will be free to unleash their young talent and truly show off how strong a roster they have from top to bottom. Sachimo Zoidberg has unquestionable offensive talent but are the Legion's strategies holding him back? Luckily, the Season 41 Entry Draft likely has provided the Legion with their goalie of the future. While they were unable to nab the goaltending phenom who is Niklaus Mikaelson, Toronto scored two solid young tenders in Fedir Okranitz and David Blind. While Blind isn't quite showing excellent progression in the VHLM, Okranitz is justifying his first round selection with strong performances that have enabled the Yukon Rush to sit atop the North American Conference with the best record in the minor leagues. This is inspiring a very optimistic view towards the future within the Toronto organization as Okranitz very well may be the key to their cup hopes in the coming seasons. Expected to make his debut in Season 42, the Legion are gearing up to have a breakout season in which their years of rebuilding and establishing a solid core should finally come to fruition.
  15. We aren't bad anymore!
  16. What? Calgary is the only reason we can overcome the lack of a goalie. Aside from Brookside, they have a much less talented team.
  17. While it seems fairly certain that Toronto will not make the playoffs this season, I would suggest you take caution before making that assumption. To put it plainly, the Legion have a strong, young team that is improving each and every week while their main foe, the Wranglers, are going to be virtually no better by game 72 than they were at game one. In fact, the only thing keeping them alive right now is a decent goaltender because the rest of their roster pales in comparison to Toronto's, which boasts arguably the best collection of young talent in the league. But there is also a lot more to this. Recently, the Legion were on a five game winning streak that included wins over the Titans, Reign, and Wranglers and it's been eleven games since they have even lost by more than a single goal, a 4-1 drubbing at the hands of the Reign. To put it plainly, the Legion are getting better at a rate greater than any other team in the league and with an eight point deficit at this point behind the Wranglers, there is no team more likely to overcome that with 49 games remaining than Toronto. While not making the playoffs wouldn't necessarily be a disappointment for the Legion, it would certainly be a big step in their rebuilding process.
  18. VHL This Week Season 41 Edition 3 We're now a third of the way through the season and, once again, it's not a big surprise who the top teams and who the worst teams are. The separation between teams are only growing and despite how early into the season we are, it doesn't appear that any team outside the playoffs right now has enough this year to make a push into the top three of their conference. Announcements Make sure to check out Edition 221 of the VHL Magazine! The second round of the writing ranks will conclude in the next couple of days. Get ready for some great articles as voting should open up soon! Game Discussion After an exciting week of games, the first we will take a closer look at is one between a pair of cross-conference rivals, both of whom are putting together strong seasons. This game between the Titans and Meute was very close, requiring overtime to determine a winner. The scoring started quickly with Willem Janssen scoring the first goal of the game for the Titans before the Meute's Rami Jakobssen tied it back up less than a minute later. The Titans and Meute would again swap goals before the first period would conclude but it was the Kimmo Salo and Brock Waldron show after that as both teams were totally shut out through the rest of regulation. But once overtime started, the Meute dominated play early yet it was not enough to slip the puck past Salo as Jackson Miller would score his second goal of the game to earn the win for the Titans. Next is a game that saw a young and inexperienced team in the Toronto Legion battle hard against the Continental Cup favorites, the Riga Reign. The game began in typical fashion a just five minutes in, Brennan McQueen found the back of the net to put Riga ahead. But the Legion would respond with a dominant performance in the period, eventually outshooting the Reign 19-8 and ending the frame ahead 2-1 thanks to goals from Devin Sundberg and Steve Tremblay. It was a hard fought defensive game the rest of the way but the Legion held off their opponents en route to a big upset. Finally we have a game that pitted two conference foes against each other. The Bears and Wranglers were entangled in a high scoring affair in this one. Very early in the game, Seattle was able to score first although their one goal lead was erased by Marcus Hurley around ten minutes later. This would not stop the Bears, though, as Simon Tremblay was able to find the back of the net before the period was over to help his team to a 2-1 lead. Once again, the Bears scored early into the period, this time off a Queen Latifa goal. They would increase their lead to 4-1 before Andrew Erikson scored for the Wranglers late in the period to cut the deficit to 2. The Bears held on to their lead until the midway point of the third period when Jakob Linholm cut it in half followed by Marcus Hurley's second goal just a minute later to know the game up at 4. Unfortunately, the Bears just didn't have enough left in the tank as the Wranglers disposed of them quickly in the shootout to earn the win despite never holding a lead throughout the entire game. 19. Meeting Lofty Expectations "With the sixth overall selection in the Season 39 VHLM Dispersal Draft, the Ottawa Lynx are proud to select Jerrick Poole!" The words seemed surreal. The Ottawa Lynx, the team who, even before the draft due to their control of five of the first seven picks, was considered a virtual lock to win the Founder's Cup, had chosen Poole as their top defenseman for a cup run. For a guy who came into the VHL nearly unknown after failing to receive any significant attention from division one colleges after an unimpressive yet solid junior career, the selection meant that something was finally working out. Fast forward a season. After helping the Lynx to a Founder's Cup win, it was time to move on to the VHL after establishing himself as one of the top prospects in the minors. With his draft position uncertain and the possibility of being selected virtually anywhere in the first round, it came as a relief when the Legion decided to take him fourth overall, their second of three first round picks. Although it felt like a weight was lifted from Poole's back, pressure mounted once again. The draft class, hailed as one of the best in VHL history, was littered with players likely to make significant impacts in the league. As the fourth player selected, he couldn't just be good. He had to be great in order to justify the selection. Before things began to go well for Poole, it nearly appeared as if his dreams of being a professional hockey player were over. Making his debut with the Legion in Season 40, Poole received plenty of minutes playing for a very young an thin team. While their playoff hopes were nothing more than hopes before they even stepped onto the ice to begin the season, it was a chance for Toronto to showcase some of their young talent. Poole would join Devin Sundberg and Tyler Cote as the team's leading scorers as they finished fourth in the North American Conference and firmly out of a playoff spot. To cap off the season, Jerrick Poole was voted in as an All-Star after finishing eleventh among defensemen in points and second in blocked shots, a strong start to a career despite being well overshadowed by Mason Richardson, the rookie defenseman for the Express. After Poole's Season 40 performance, it became clear that his potential was sky-high and very well could be a defining player of his generation. Very few players even play in the VHL in their first season of eligibility, yet alone are named All-Stars. But in order for this to happen, he would have to significantly improve upon his season and help the Legion make the next step in their rebuilding process, especially considering their relative lack of depth on defense. Although physical play is often overlooked in the VHL, Poole has established himself as one of the more intimidating players in the league. Already approximately a third of the way through Season 41, Poole continues to establish himself as not only a future star but one of the better, most well-rounded players in the VHL. He is one of only two defensemen in the league with at least 20 points, 75 hits, and 50 blocked shots thus far, joined only by Calgary's Tony Stark, a VHL veteran who has had a very mediocre career up to this point. One pace to score 65 points with 251 hits and 178 blocked shots, Poole is continuing to put up better numbers and is showing great improvement as a player. While it is still far too early to say for sure, it is looking like he very well could be one of the top defensemen to ever play in the league by the time he hangs up his skates.
