  1. The Future Is Here Season 40 was marked by the influx of a number of extremely talented rookies. While you cannot ignore the big names such as Tyrone Williams and Devin Sundberg, this rookie class was headlined by the top four selections out of the highly regarded Season 40 Entry Draft. These top four picks were not your typical rookies - each established themselves as impact players immediately and are very much the future of the VHL, all of them with enormous potential that very well may spark a great new rivalry between the Cologne Express and the Toronto Legion as both teams are shaping up to be big-time contenders. We will start off with a look into the rookie season of center Thomas O'Malley, the first overall pick. Without question, O'Malley lived up to his draft position by picking up an incredible 110 points that not only led all rookies but was fourth in the league and just five points less than reigning MVP Odin Tordahl. His +/- of 71 was the best in the VHL and his faceoff percentage was one of the best in the league. The Express could not have made a better pick at first overall and O'Malley is an offensive powerhouse who helped the team jump from a lottery selection to the first seed in the European Conference and very much a Continental Cup contender. Despite Thomas O'Malley's outstanding rookie season, many cite his lack of physicality as a detriment and something that very well may catch up to him as teams around the league begin to figure out how to limit his impact on the ice. But, his skill is unquestionable and if this season was any indication, Thomas O'Malley is a name that will go down in the history books as one of the very best to play in the VHLM. Thomas O'Malley is a natural talent, something the rest of the league learned quickly. Cologne's second overall pick just as easily could have been selected first. Mason Richardson, last season's Bourque Trophy winner as the top defenseman in the VHLM, continued to impress this season. His 98 points were only three shy of Conner Low's 101 and Richardson will likely give him competition for the title of top defenseman in the VHL of Season 40. His 30 goals easily led all defensemen while 16 of these were scored on the powerplay, establishing himself as an elite powerplay QB. Richardson also played very soundly defensively all year and his 137 shots blocked were eighth best in the league. Much like O'Malley, though, Mason Richardson's physical play, especially as a defenseman, left quite a bit to be desired and might be the only thing holding him back from being a complete player who can truly do everything at a high level. The first of Toronto's hoard of picks in the Season 40 draft, Tyler Cote was named the captain of this young team before ever stepping onto the ice in the VHL. While his scoring output wasn't at the level of O'Malley or Richardson, partially due to the fact that the Express simply had a deeper roster, his 64 points were fifth best among rookies. But the thing that makes Cote such an impressive player is his all-around ability. The winner of the Steve Yzerman Trophy as the top VHLM two-way forward just a season ago, Cote's 329 hits were fifth best in the league, putting him right up there with some of the best two-way forwards in the VHL. Tyler Cote is a player who can do it all and perhaps the most important player for the future of the Legion. Finally, we have fourth overall pick Jerrick Poole. Although he didn't score at a Mason Richardson-esque pace, he finished with 60 points which was good enough for sixth among rookies and eleventh among defensemen. Poole's physicality, though, was a bright spot for the rebuilding Toronto Legion as he finished with 261 hits, more than any defenseman with more than 60 points aside from Jake Wylde. In addition, Poole's 215 shots blocked were second best in the league, giving Toronto much needed help in the defensive zone. His 198 penalty minutes are a concern, though, and he will have to improve his discipline in order to avoid giving opponents too many powerplay opportunities. Overall, O'Malley, Richardson, Cote, and Poole headline a new influx of young talent heading to the VHL. Already widely regarded as one of the best draft classes in VHL history, we will see even more Season 40 draftees making the jump to the VHL next season looking to make their mark in league history. With these four essentially destined to be the next generation of superstars, all eyes will be on them to continue to establish themselves and help the VHL continue its impressive legacy.
  2. VHL This Week Edition 6 Welcome again to VHL This Week! The VHL has plenty going on right now with Season 40 festivities still continuing and the regular season coming to an end! Here is the place for you to stay up to date with everything happening in the league! Announcements The regular season is nearing its conclusion! While the playoff teams have been decided, the European Conference seeding is still wide open with the Express, Titans, and Reign all vying for a first round bye. Make sure to check out Edition 215 of the VHL Magazine! Yet another great edition that will get you ready for the upcoming playoffs! The Season 40 Player Store is officially open. Use your valuable contract dollars to improve your player! Your options include a TPE re-roll, tripled awards prediction points, a free week, position change, your player being featured on the cover of a VHL Magazine edition, and much more! Game Discussion With only a week left to go in the regular season, the playoff teams are set in stone. Seeding for the North American Conference is virtually locked in with the Americans owning the top seed followed by the Meute and Wranglers. While we do know who will be making the playoffs out of the European Conference, the positions are still very much in contention with only three points separating the Express, Reign, and Titans. The first game we will take a closer look at is this close game between the Reign and Meute. Riga got on board first with a quick goal from Brennan McQueen, his 44th of the season but just five minutes later, the Meute responded with one of their own. Quebec would then take the lead with a Naomi Young goal midway through the first period. Thanks to a strong performance from Lennox Moher, the Meute would hold on to their one goal lead and earned the victory by a score of 3-2. Another big game, which was played just this weekend, was one between the Express and Wranglers with a final score that was far from indicative of how each team performed. While Edwin Encarnacion and the Wranglers would draw first blood, they surrendered their only lead of the game minutes later on the penalty kill as the Express found their groove. While the Express would go on to win the game by a 6-2 score, led by three points from both Andrey Zadorov and Mason Richardson, it was the Wranglers who controlled the pace of the game. This one ultimately came down to goaltending as Blaine Olynick came up huge for the Express, stopping 51 of 53 shots while his team scored their six goals on just 22 shots. While this was a big win for the Express that kept them in first place, it is not often they will be more than doubled in shots and still come away with the win. Finally, we have this battle between the Americans and the Titans. Here, the Americans looked to show the league why they are so heavily favored to win the Continental Cup and they were successful in doing so, displaying their tremendous talent in a 3-1 handling of Helsinki. Defending MVP Odin Tordahl led the way for his team with two goals as the Americans enjoyed an 18 shot advantage over their opponents. Goaltender Brick Wahl helped to ensure the win, stopping everything he faced aside from a Chris Raymond snipe in the second period. Game Discussion The trade deadline is coming up tomorrow and it's become clear where each team now fits in. In big news, we've seen the Dynamo solidify their cellar dwelling position by moving Jarkko Olsen and Lennox Moher for draft picks. The first game we will take a more in-depth look at is this close battle between the Americans and Titans. In a game that took a shootout to decide, New York came out on top by a score of 4-3. Leading the way for the Americans were Tom Slaughter and, of course, Odin Tordahl, who scored two points apiece. Slaughter finished off a great game with the winning goal in the shootout. In a game that may be best described as a sign of things to come, the Legion manhandled the Iron Eagles by a score of 6-2. Toronto got off to a quick start this game, scoring less than four minutes in and never looking back. They were lead by Devin Sundberg's hat trick and Jerrick Poole's four points as they coasted to a win in a game dominated by their young talent. Finally, we have another surprising result, with the the Meute being shut out by the Express 3-0. Blaine Olynick earned the shutout by stopping all nineteen shots he faced. Leo Tesla paced Cologne's offense by adding two goals, including one on the powerplay in the second period. The Express have been on a roll as of late and appear poised to earn a playoff spot and make the next big step in the team's future. The Graphics Competition has come to a close! Frank edged out boubabi by a single vote to win the competition and make sure to check out all the entries - there are some real sexy graphics there! Game Discussion As we've crossed the halfway point of the season, teams have now fairly firmly established their place in the league. While the North American playoff picture is already becoming very clear, the European Conference appears to be a race that won't be decided until the final days of the regular season. In our first game, we have a battle between the top dogs in the North American Conference. While the Meute are trying to show they can hang with the Americans, they failed to do so in a 6-2 loss this week. Bennett Wahl's 5 points carried New York to victory along with Odin Tordahl's addition of three goals. This was a very disappointing result for the Meute who failed to keep up with their conference rivals all game despite Bruno Wolf supplying all the offense for the team. Next we have a matchup between two teams who reaped the benefits of the strong Season 40 Entry Draft. After playing an earlier matchup just days prior in which the Legion pulled off an impressive and surprising 1-0 victory of the Express, they were able to upset Cologne once again in a big 3-2 win. Devin Sundberg's two goals led the way for the Legion as they managed to make their CPU goaltender look good once again. Finally we have the game between the Riga Reign and Calgary Wranglers. It took overtime to decide a winner in this tilt between two teams in the heat of playoff races in which the Reign were able to pull off the 2-1 win off a Brennan McQueen goal. Goaltender Mike Szatowski Jr. was strong between the pipes for the Reign, giving them the win despite a Wrangler shot advantage. The final three are boubabi, Frank, and Mr. Baller - congrats to these tremendous graphic makers! Game Discussion VHL teams are beginning to build their identities and it is becoming increasingly clear who is a contender and who just is not ready to compete for the cup yet. Here's a look at some of the biggest games of the past week. In a battle between the two conference leaders who happen to own the top two records in the league, the Titans were able to come out on top in this battle with the Americans by a score of 3-0. Jackson Miller scored all three goals in this one has his hat trick led the Titans to victory while Kimmo Salo not only pitched a 22 save shutout in net but added an assist on Miller's first goal. The Americans still have the slightly better record but Helsinki is on their tails. The Wranglers and Express, despite their mediocrity to this point in the season, put on a show for the rest of the league this week. After some back and forth scoring, the two teams found themselves tied 3-3 after regulation. After overtime and a long shootout, the Wranglers managed to secure the two points as the Express went home disappointed despite a great effort in a 4-3 loss. Wesley Kellinger scored a goal and two assists for the Express while rookie teammate Mason Richardson added both a goal and an assist in regulation. But it was not enough to overcome the Wranglers, who pulled off a shootout win after eight rounds. Finally, we have this surprise handling of the Meute by the Iron Eagles. Despite being out-shot, Vasteras held on to their early lead to emerge victorious by a score of 3-1. Leading the way for the Iron Eagles was none other than Niklas Lindberg, whose two goals increased his league-leading total to 26. Media & Graphics Victor's 33rd edition of 40 in 40 highlights new players and the longevity of the VHL. It's an excellent, well-written, and informative article that everyone should take a look at. Next we have travehave's article, entitled Wranglers Hitting Stride. It's an interesting overview of the Wranglers' season to this point, which sees them sitting comfortable in playoff position. Finally, make sure to take a look at Caillean22's graphic of Jamie Hill. It's extremely smooth and helps to preserve Hill's femininity although it will be interesting to see if she can ever make the jump to the VHL!
  10. Despite the rumors that there would be shakeups in the top four picks in the Season 40 VHL Entry Draft, everything ended up going exactly as planned with Thomas O'Malley and Mason Richardson going first and second to the Cologne Express and Tyler Cote and Jerrick Poole being selected third and fourth by the Toronto Legion. All four players made the early arrival to the VHL where they are showing the league just why the top of the draft was held in such high regard. All four players are among the top six rookie point scorers - Thomas O'Malley's 23 rank second while Richardson, Cote, and Poole come in at fourth, fifth, and sixth with 17, 16, and 15 points each. In addition, all four players are among the top ten point scorers in the VHL at their own position. Cote, O'Malley, and Poole also show up among the league leaders in non-scoring categories. Tyler Cote is far from a one-dimensional player and his 86 hits rank him seventh in the VHL while Thomas O'Malley is a face-off specialist, winning 58.5% of his faceoffs, good enough for seventh among qualifying players. Poole, on the other hand, has been one of the more gritty players in the league and his 67 shots blocked and 70 penalty minutes are the second highest in the VHL. While neither the Express or Legion are currently in playoff position and each team clearly has plenty of work ahead of them if they want to become legitimate contenders, both teams struck it rich at the top of the Season 40 draft and will have a strong core to build around in the years to come.
  11. Yeah I think a reboot would be a great idea if your goal is to kill the sim league!

It looks like the Season 40 banner competition has concluded with banner number five taking home the prize! Hopefully it will be the site's banner soon! Game Discussion The big story of the past week has been about the top three teams in the league. Currently, the new York Americans, Helsinki Titans, and Quebec Meute have been playing at a much higher level than anyone else in the league and everyone is noticing. The Wranglers and Meute fought back and forth in this defensive battle with the Meute ultimately coming out on top with a 1-0 win. The goalies were the stars of this game with Brock Waldron pitching the shutout while Martin Brookside did everything he could to keep Calgary in the game! Here the Toronto Legion pulled off the upset win over the Helsinki Titans in overtime! Lead by Matteo Gallo's two assists in regulation and shootout goal, the Legion managed to pick up two points in their 3-2 victory. If you're looking for some dominance, you bet you can find it here in the Express' 6-0 beatdown over HC Dynamo. Wesley Kellinger and rookie Thomas O'Malley were the stars in this game for the Express, picking up 5 and 4 points, respectively. Game Discussion The Season 39 VHL All-Star game saw a tight battle that saw the North American Conference come away with a 7-6 overtime victory off a Wesley Kellinger goal just 40 seconds into the extra frame. Three Stars 3. Odin Tordahl 1 G, 3 A, +1 2. Wesley Kellinger 2 G, 2 A, +1 1. Willem Janssen 4 G, 2 A, +2 With Season 40 kicking off, the Americans have been asserting their dominance as they look to repeat as Continental Cup Champions. Through six games, they are undefeated at 6-0, including two big wins over HC Dynamo, last season's runners up. Bennett Wahl's four points led the Americans past Davos in the first game while Brick Wahl pitched a shutout in the rematch. Although we are early this season, the Vasteras Iron Eagles have been very impressive. They're lead by Niklas Lindberg's league-leading 15 points and Eggly Bagelface's three shutouts, which are exactly half of the shutouts the league has seen to this point.
