After an off-season with a number of ups and downs, the Toronto Legion will head into Season 42 with a bit more firepower than many expected. The loss of center Devin Sundberg to free agency was a huge hit for the team, leaving them with a gaping hole at second line center. This would have forced the Legion to thrust rookie Raphael Pettyfer into the position - something that certainly wouldn't have been outside of his capabilities but would have been an immense amount of pressure for the young forward. Instead, the Legion managed to add veteran Bennett Wahl, who will add even more veteran presence to the young team after adding defenseman Slaeter Fjorsstrom and goaltender Kimmo Salo. Wahl was originally drafted by the Legion in the second round of the Season 37 VHL Entry Draft. After holding onto him until his rookie season in Season 39, he was sent to the New York Americans at the deadline and promptly won the Continental Cup. Playing for the Cologne Express this season, he was one of their top players, picking up 67 points and was the team's fourth leading scorer. The Legion hope Wahl can replace the hole left by the loss of Sundberg and will need him to if they want to get into the playoffs this season.

In the Super Cup bout between Walcott Your Ass and Strauss the Grouses, easily the two teams with the worst names in the tournament, we saw the first and currently only fight of the Season 41 Super Cup. This was between Jerrick Poole and Mason Richardson who happen to be the first two defensemen and unquestionably the best defensemen to come out of the highly heralded Season 40 VHL Entry Draft. The fight began directly after a faceoff in the Strauss defensive zone won by Travis Boychuk of Walcott Your Ass. Prior to the faceoff, after goaltender Hans Wingate smothered a Konstantin Azhishchenkov shot, Jerrick Poole gave a quick jab in an effort to knock the puck loose. Mason Richardson did not take kindly to the action, resulting in an exchange of choice words between the two defensemen. This argument continued as the teams lined up for the faceoff and as soon as the puck dropped, Richardson bolted for Poole, who immediately dropped his gloves. Unfortunately, it was not an extremely exciting fight with only a single punch landed by Jerrick Poole before being separated by the referees. The bad blood between the two did not stop there. Late in the period, as Mason Richardson brought the puck into the offensive zone, Jerrick Poole lined him up along the boards but despite the hard hit, Richardson stayed up and maintained control of the puck. In what was perhaps a mix of frustration and anger, Poole turned around and slashed Richardson, breaking his stick and earning a two minute minor. In the third period, Richardson was called for a goaltender interference minor after slashing Brick Wahl in a move that many saw as a retaliation for Poole's actions earlier in the game. If there were any issues between Poole and Richardson before the game, nobody knew but now everyone is wondering if this will continue into the VHL season. http://www.vhlsim.net/SC41/SC41-29.html

Toronto Legion: Season 42 and Beyond Outlook Once viewed as the next big thing in the VHL, there are a number of doubts surrounding the Legion franchise as we head into Season 42. Although they were able to add stud defenseman Slaeter Fjorsstrom in addition to goaltender Kimmo Salo, things have not exactly gone as planned for this team as of late. In a miscommunication in Season 41, goaltender of the future Fedir Okranitz was led to believe there was a clause in the VHLM's collective bargaining agreement that put a cap on his practice hours, hindering his development and leading to a statement where he professed his lack of desire for excellence. Now, this off-season, the team lost one of its core players, Devin Sundberg, to free agency in a surprise move after leading the Legion to believe he would be returning. Sundberg's decision has left the team in limbo as this was supposed to be the year they began to truly become competitors in the VHL. Devin Sundberg is headed to Davos and his native Europe, leaving a large gap that rookie Raphael Pettyfer will be looked on to fill One positive for the team is that they were able to extend both Tyler Cote and Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy winner Sachimo Zoidberg this off-season. Cote is now locked up through Season 44 while Zoidberg has signed a deal that will keep him in Toronto through Season 47. But with Jerrick Poole, Jaime Hill, and Shadhu Rathod Jr. all on entry level contracts set to expire at the conclusion of Season 42, general manager Edgar has some difficult decisions to make in order to ensure the Legion reach the level of success many envisioned for them when they made three picks in the top five of the Season 40 Entry Draft. With the loss of Sundberg, it will be difficult for this team to be a true competitor in Season 42. While they certainly will be able to play tight games with the Meute and Americans, one has to wonder if they have the depth to keep up with the top guns in the North American Conference. Toronto also has to be mindful of the Seattle Bears who don't quite have the star-power of the Legion but with the goaltender advantage thanks to Niklaus Mikaelson, absolutely cannot be left out of the playoff discussion this year. The big question now in Toronto is where will Jerrick Poole be next season? So what does this mean for Toronto? Their number one priority has to be either extending Jerrick Poole's contract or moving him to avoid another Devin Sundberg situation where they get nothing in return for a valuable player. They also must place a larger focus on player development and ensure they are able to obtain the necessary pieces to become a top team. This will also come down to Fedir Okranitz - they must find a way to motivate him to become a strong goaltender or else they could find themselves in a similar position as the Titans were with Kimmo Salo - possessing a strong roster held back by a mediocre goalie. It's clear the Legion don't have a great chance at the Continental Cup this season but what is even more clear is the fact that the Legion must continue to take action if they ever want to win a cup with their current core group of players. This once highly-heralded team of the future has to avoid bringing more disappointment to the city of Toronto and end their playoff drought which is currently the longest active streak in the VHL.

VHL This Week Season 41 Edition 10 Welcome to the final edition of Season 41's VHL This Week! This is one of the most exciting off-seasons in recent memory with high trade activity, big name free agents moving around, and, of course, the Super Cup. In addition, the award winners from Season 41 have been announced and training camp has begun as teams gear up for Season 42. Announcements Check out the Season 41 off-season schedule here. Make sure to check out Edition 228 of the VHL Magazine! The Super Cup has begun! Make sure to keep up with all the action here The Wranglers have announced a General Manager change with eaglesfan036 taking over the helm of the franchise. The winners of Season 41 awards can be found here. Congrats to Mike Szatkowski Jr., Riga Reign goaltender, on being named league MVP! In addition, the Season 41 All-Star rosters have been announced. Game Discussion This week, we're going to take a deeper look into the All-Star game. This was a high scoring affair that the European Conference controlled most of the way after avoiding an early scare in which they quickly found themselves down 2-0. But they responded quickly thanks to two Thomas O'Malley goals followed by another three to find themselves up 5-2 after the first period. In the second, North America was held to a measly two shots as Europe continued to dominate and extended their lead to 8-2 as O'Malley completed his hat trick just twenty-eight minutes into the game. North America managed to slightly up their game in the third, although that very well could be attributed to the horrendous play of Kimmo Salo, who stopped just two of seven shots he faced. For the North American Conference, forward convert Conner Low picked up a hat trick while Brennan McQueen also registered a hatty in his conference's win. Robin Gow, despite not getting a hat trick, was the star of the game as he not only scored two goals but assisted on four to lead the way with six points in the European Conference's 12-7 win. Yeahhhh Flocka let's go and make some things happen in Toronto! We're looking forward to you playing up on the team in Season 43 -
With Tyler Cote inking a deal to stick with the Toronto Legion through Season 44, all eyes turned to defenseman Jerrick Poole, who has yet to comment on his thoughts on remaining with the Legion. On the team right now, Poole says, "adding Fjorsstrom was awesome. Do I think this team is looking great? Hell yes. But I still think we need to get better. We have some moves to make this off-season, for sure." While you can sense the excitement, his comments do not exactly amount to a vote of confidence for the only VHL team he's ever played for and that is something the Legion absolutely have to be mindful of. "Will I stay with Toronto? To be honest, I have no idea right now. My contract doesn't expire for another season so I have plenty of time to assess the situation. I absolutely want to win and I think this off-season is where our future will be decided. If we can add a strong free agent, maybe a guy like Faraday, I think that bodes extremely well for the future of the franchise. I want to stay here and win here but I'm not going to stay here if I can't win." As one of the league's top young defensemen, Poole would surely be a hot commodity if he were to enter the free agent pool (poole?). Time will tell what happens with this situation but it seems like his decision is far from set at this point. As one of the most important pieces to the Legion, this will be something that the entire league will be monitoring should he not sign an extension by mid Season 42.

VHL This Week Season 41 Edition 9 Welcome to the ninth edition of Season 41's VHL This Week! After a hard-fought series, the Continental Cup Champions have been crowned! After three games which went into overtime and five decided by a single goal, the New York Americans claimed their second championship in three seasons! Announcements The Season 41 off-season has begun. Check out the schedule here. Don't forget to vote for the your Season 41 All-Stars! Make sure to check out Edition 227 of the VHL Magazine! The Super Cup is set to begin soon! GMs have been announced and the draft is scheduled to take place Wednesday night! Game Discussion To the surprise of absolutely nobody, we will be looking into game seven of the Continental Cup Finals. After the Americans overcame a 2-1 deficit to win game six in overtime, the VHL was excited to see such a tight series go to a do or die game seven. This game was extremely tight from the opening faceoff, with the Americans having the edge despite all 22 shots from either side being turned away. But this would quickly change at the start of the second period. After Matt Bentley recovered a quick shot on goal by the Reign, he sent the puck to his outlet, Milos Denis, who carried the puck into the offensive zone before taking Mike Szatkowski Jr. by surprise and putting the pick right below his glove to give the Americans a one goal lead just seconds into the period. Six minutes later, the Americans would strike again as Conner Low found the back of the net to put his team up by two. The Reign continued to struggle to put the puck past Brick Wahl, unarguably the best player of the playoffs up to this point. With just five minutes to go in the period, though, Alistar Graves deflected a Robin Gow shot into the net to cut New York's lead in half and give the Reign some life. The third period, unsurprisingly, was a defensive battle as the Americans desperately worked to hold onto their slim lead. But a late period penalty came back to haunt them as Slaeter Fjorsstrom blasted a rebound into the net to tie the game in dramatic fashion. Unfortunately, this 2-2 score would hold for less than thirty seconds as New York star Tom Slaughter scored what would be the game-winner, helping the Americans win another Continental Cup! Stars On The Move Season 41 came to an exciting finish less than two days ago with the New York Americans pulling off their second Continental Cup in three seasons with their game seven victory over Riga. Already, we've seen two up-and-coming teams make moves to better their position as they already gear up for Season 42. With two trades already completed and the Super Cup being held within the next week, the VHL, without a doubt, has an exciting off-season in store. In order to start the off-season right, we will take a look at the two trades to occur since the end of the playoffs. Cologne Express Trades a Season 43 First and Second Round Pick to the Calgary Wranglers for goaltender Martin Brookside Martin Brookside, after five seasons with Clagary, is headed back to his native Europe. When Calgary made a move to get rid of just about their entire core at the trade deadline, everyone left them for dead. Many believed it to be a foregone conclusion that the Legion would overtake them to snag the third playoff spot in the conference. But everyone forgot about the brick wall named Martin Brookside. His play after the deadline was quite easily the most impressive of any goaltender in the VHL and he not only kept Calgary afloat but enabled them to remain fairly competitive with some of the league's best teams. While his play was not enough to bring any playoff success to his team, the rest of the league noticed his extraordinary play despite having a very weak team playing in front of him. While Cologne already has Blaine Olynick, who is a solid goalie in his own right, Brookside is a huge upgrade and instantly makes the Express the early favorites out of the European Conference. Not only does this trade give Cologne one of the best players at a very thin position throughout the league but it essentially provides them with trade fodder in the form of Olynick. While he certainly is far from an elite player, a number of teams lack a strong netminder and Olynick could represent a significant upgrade and easily could net the Express with a solid depth player to continue to strengthen their roster. On the other hand, this trade gives the Wranglers more pieces for a rebuild although one has to wonder if another team would have shelled out more for such a talented goalie. Toronto Legion Trades forward Steve Tremblay and a Season 44 First Round Pick to the Riga Reign for defenseman Slaeter Fjorsstrom Season 41 likely represented the end of Riga's Continental Cup window and with this trade so shortly after the conclusion of their finals loss, they clearly are not waiting to expedite the rebuilding process after five straight playoff appearances. Fjorsstrom was a major part of the team's success after being drafted first overall in the Season 37 VHL Entry Draft and immediately entering the VHL, being named an All-Star as a rookie. While he has begun to show signs of age, it appears the Reign are looking to lessen the pain of a full rebuild and instead enter a transition season although that wholly depends on what happens as the off-season progresses. The Legion will turn to Slaeter Fjorsstrom to solidify their defense. For Toronto, this move is an instant upgrade that should help them to end the longest active playoff drought in the league. Already possessing one of the league's most talented young core group of players, Fjorsstrom adds some veteran presence on the blue line and should help to alleviate some of the concerns regarding the fact that goaltender Fedir Okranitz is still very much developing and likely will experience some growing pains this season. Slaeter Fjorsstrom also adds a strong offensive presence and should help to take some weight off the shoulders of top forwards Sachimo Zoidberg, Tyler Cote, and Devin Sundberg. Overall, these two moves represent the changing environment of the VHL. It is clear that the balance of power is shifting and new teams are poised to take over the top of the league's standings. These moves, without a doubt, are even more important than they may seem on the surface - with a talented free agent pool, players will take notice of teams' efforts to improve and trading for stars shows that general managers are willing to take action to improve their team's situation. The rest of the league should take note after such a strong start to the off-season.

VHL This Week Season 41 Edition 8 Welcome back to VHL This Week! After a week, the playoffs are nearing the end as we're two games into the Continental Cup Finals. This year we have a battle between the two top seeds - the Reign and Americans. Although these two were the clear favorites since day one to make the finals, it's a total toss-up on who will win, as evidenced by the series currently sitting at one game apiece. Should make for an exciting end to the season! Announcements With the Americans and Reign in the finals, the Meute and Titans had their seasons cut short with losses in the conference finals. Better luck to the rest of the league next season! Although the playoffs are still going on, there is something for those whose seasons ended early! The VHL Entry Draft Lottery was held with the Dynamo grabbing the first overall selection. Make sure to check out Edition 226 of the VHL Magazine! The Super Cup will take place at the end of this season! The competition will feature players from around the VHL and VHLM competing in a fantasy-style competition that will be sure to add some excitement to this off-season but it is still in need of General Managers! Sign up to fulfill all your VHL fantasies! Game Discussion With the conclusion of the conference finals, we will take a look at each series clinching game which sent Riga and New York into the Continental Cup Finals! The first game we'll look at is game five of the North American Conference Finals between the Meute and Americans. Just thirty seconds into the game, Meute star forward Bruno Wolf picked up a cross-checking minor, a mistake that would lead to a New York powerplay goal just one minute into the game as Matt Bentley took a hard shot from the point that found its way in for an early lead. Quebec City bounced back strongly from the quick goal but was unable to tie the game up before the first period drew to a close. Although their effort was not rewarded in the first, the Meute kept at it before Wolf made up for his goal-costing error by deflecting an Aksel Thomassen shot past Brick Wahl to even up the score. Within five minutes, though, Conner Low took a beautiful shot from the top of the circle to take the lead back before Tom Slaughter promptly gave the Americans a two goal lead, one that would last through the second period. The third was perhaps the most tightly contested period of the game but with the Meute playing shorthanded for a total of six minutes, they were unable to come back from the two goal deficit as the Americans emerged out of the North American Conference victorious. Game six of the European Conference Finals was even more exciting as the Titans looked to even the series up and force a game seven. It did not take long for the first goal of the game to be scored in this one with the Titans' Jackson Miller depositing a one-timer into the back of the net just two minutes into the game. Although Riga limited Helsinki's chances throughout the rest of the period, Tyson Stokes scored after a beautiful passing sequence which began after he intercepted a pass in the neutral zone to put his team up by two, a lead which held up through the end of the first. Unwilling to be happy with their small lead, the Titans continued to apply offensive pressure as a Jake Wylde goal put them up 3-0, exerting total domination and flawless execution making a win look like a formality. But Riga would not go down so easily as Brennan McQueen finally erased the goose egg four minutes into the second period. About nine minutes later, after a James Faraday hooking minor, Robin Gow and the Reign powerplay cut Helsinki's lead to just one before the conclusion of the second period. In the third, Riga held off the Titans, limiting them to just six shots as they tied the game at three to force overtime. The extra frame was all Helsinki as they put pressure on their opponents and had a number of opportunities all turned away by Mike Szatkowski Jr. before Robert Gow III finally got the Reign's first shot off, which turned out to be the game-winner as Riga punched their ticket to the finals. VHL This Week Season 41 Edition 8 Welcome back to VHL This Week. The regular season has come to a close with the Wranglers holding off the Legion to claim the third playoff spot in the North American Conference while the three way battle in the European Conference has finished with Riga on top, Cologne in second, and Helsinki claiming the third and final playoff position. In fact, the first round of the playoffs are already underway. Currently, Quebec City leads Calgary three games to one while the Titans also are up three to one versus the Express. Although this is a notoriously dangerous lead in the VHL, it is hard to bet against the Meute or Titans at this point. Announcements Round One of the playoffs is underway! Soon the Americans and Reign will learn who their opponents will be in the Conference Finals! The writing ranks competition appears to be stalled. Round 3, which was scheduled to begin almost two weeks ago, will feature Noah!! vs. YEAH! and Doomsday vs. Green in what is sure to produce even more great writing! Make sure to check out Edition 225 of the VHL Magazine! The Super Cup will take place at the end of this season! The competition will feature players from around the VHL and VHLM competing in a fantasy-style competition that will be sure to add some excitement to this off-season. Game Discussion With the playoffs in progress at this point, we will take a look at one game from each series. As you will see, the playoffs have not been lacking in excitement this season! First we have the opening matchup of the North American Conference playoffs between the Meute and Wranglers. As has been the case since the trade deadline, the Wranglers have largely been relying on goaltender Martin Brookside to remain competitive and this was the case in this game. The first period was one of total domination by Quebec, who managed a 19-7 shot advantage yet it was not enough to find the back of the net as each of their 19 shots were denied. The second period was much of the same with shot after shot being turned away before Jakob Linholm finally put one in to give the Meute a 1-0 lead. It would be another 20 minutes before the next goal was scored, this one a game-tying goal from the unheralded CAL RW2 that left the Meute confused as to how a game in which they were clearly controlling play could be tied. But they used this goal as motivation, putting on a clinic for the rest of the period, ultimately outshooting Calgary 64-27 in a 3-1 victory thanks to team MVP Bruno Wolf's game winner. We also have game four of the Express-Titans series, the first elimination game we have seen thus far. With the Titans up 3-0 in the series, Cologne was looking to avoid yet another one and done after last season, where they earned a first round bye but were promptly disposed of in four games by Riga. The Express came out of the gates strong as Logan Laich scored the first goal of the game just over a minute in. But Cologne would not hold the lead for long as Oskars Harumpf scored his first playoff goal of his career to knot things up at one. Feeling the pressure of once again being swept, the Express managed to go on a scoring frenzy, adding three to their total in just six minutes with goals from Wahl, O'Malley, and Yumalatopinto to take a commanding 4-1 lead that would hold through the end of the first frame. In the second, Blaine Olynick continued to do a great job at staving off the Titans' attack before James Faraday snuck one by him just before the end of the second. With a 4-2 lead and the series on the line, the Express bore down on Helsinki and limited their opponents to just four shots in the third. While they weren't able to keep all four out of the net, they held on for a 4-3 win and will survive to see another day. Despite Season, Future Remains Bright In Toronto With the sound of the final buzzer and a disappointing loss to HC Dynamo in the bag, the Toronto Legion once again were sent home after 72, failing to reach the playoffs once again. With their league-worst playoff drought extended to three seasons. Despite early-season ambitions and a tremendous chance to overtake the Wranglers after the trade deadline, Toronto never could quite put it all together with a final record of 34-26-12, five points shy of a playoff spot. Although this season is viewed as a failure both within the organization and throughout the league, it is far from reason to panic as the team's core is as strong as any in the VHL. Although the Legion have plenty of talent throughout the organization, it is clear that the quartet of Tyler Cote, Sachimo Zoidberg, Devin Sundberg, and Jerrick Poole are essential to the team's future. As the oldest of the bunch, Devin Sundberg is an interesting case. Although Tyler Cote has established himself as the clear number one center, depth is always important and contenders always have a strong second line. Sundberg, a potential free agent this off-season, should be the top priority for Toronto to bring back as he established himself as a player who can anchor a very strong second line in Season 41. After a solid rookie season in which he lead the Legion with 69 points, he set career highs in goals and assists en route to a 94 point season that should net him a hefty contract wherever he goes, although all indications point to his return to Toronto. De While Sundberg is a quick, offensive-minded center, Tyler Cote provides the Legion with another talented player at the center position. Cote's strengths, though, lie in the defensive aspects of the game. While he is far from a slouch in the offensive zone as evidenced by his 85 points, he is proving to be one of the league's top two-way defensemen. Not only was he the tenth highest scoring center but his 404 hits lead the league by a significant margin. As one of the Legion's three picks in the top five of the Season 40 Entry Draft, he is living up to all expectations and is gaining a reputation as one of the VHL's most physically dominating players. If he keeps it up, his career will be fruitful for seasons to come. Another forward from the Season 40 Entry Draft is winger Sachimo Zoidberg. After spending his first season after the draft in the VHLM and leading the minors in scoring, he made the jump to the VHL for Season 41. In as seamless a transition as the league has ever seen, he immediately made an impact for Toronto, not only leading the team with an incredible 111 points and +11 rating but leading all rookies and finishing sixth overall in the league's scoring race. His offensive prowess complement's Cote's defensive game perfectly and with the chemistry developed between the two this season, they potentially could develop into one of the greatest duos the VHL has ever seen. Rookie Sachimo Zoidberg put his incredible offensive talent on display in Season 41 If Toronto ever hopes to win a cup, they need defense and they sure found a gem in Jerrick Poole. Also a member of the Season 40 draft class, he followed up a rookie season in which he was the Legion's lone All-Star representative with a performance that would easily be Labatte-worthy if not for Matt Bentley's utter domination of the league. Despite this, Poole excelled in all aspects of the game, finishing third among defensemen in points while racking up the second most blocked shots and fourth most hits at his position. With such a strong follow-up to his rookie performance, it is becoming clear that the Legion have found a true number one defenseman, a type of player which is essential to any team desiring a sustained period of cup contention. It is becoming increasingly clear that the Legion have the players to become a powerhouse within the next few seasons. They have an excellent foundation in Sundberg, Cote, Zoidberg, and Poole and with the number of other players they have drafted in recent seasons including Jaime Hill and Fedir Okranitz, they very well could make a push as soon as next season. But, Season 42 will be essential for this team's future. With the contracts of Season 40 draftees expiring, the organization has to show a zero tolerance for failure, especially considering the relative lack of many top tier players available in free agency. But as long as every player on the Legion remains committed to winning the Continental Cup, we could have something very special in our midst.
