  1. It was his rookie season. Van Lagen has spent the year getting accustomed to VHLM life. As the season went on Van Lagen proved to be a rookie force finishing over a point per game and an astounding +31 showing he’s more than just a scorer. Although the season was a success, a bigger challenge awaited him - the playoffs.

The first series came and went as Halifax breezed through San Diego with a quik four game sweep. Van Lagen, anchoring the second line, pulled his weight coming up with some timely offence, including the game two overtime winner. As they moved on, Ottawa became the next opponent.  Van Lagen’s second line seemed to be just fine against Ottawa. Unfortunately, Ottawa dominated Halifax’s first line to the extent of a clean sweep.

The experience of playoff hockey in Halifax was a good one for Van Lagen, even if it ended in an unfortunate way. There was lots he could take from it but nothing more important than that he proved to himself and all his critics that he is indeed a big time player.

Now with his rookie season over, he eagerly awaits the draft. Has he proved enough to warrant a high pick? There certainly seems like there wasn’t much else he could do and his draft stock - currently listed as a second round pick - reflects this.

Overall, his first season was a success, as was his first taste of playoff hockey.  Where will his career go from here? Only the future will tell.

  3. As this season comes to a close, here are a few reflections from my first season in the league.

Upon my arrival to this site I was greeted with enthusiasm and lots of help from some very active members. This seemed to peak my interest rather quickly.  It didn’t take too long and I had signed a contract with Halifax 21st.

Halifax was the destination I chose not because of any reason other than they made an offer and I accepted.  Turns out it was a great choice after all! The team was super active, friendly yet competitive, and talented enough to make the playoffs. They had a spot for me as second line pivot that I quickly settled into.

I found this season length was perfect, the general community quite receptive and active, the simmers were a bit spotty regarding the consistency of actual games being played every day, but overall a enjoyable first season.

My player, Trevor Van Lagen, turned in a respectable rookie season operating at nearly a point per game pace. He gelled well with the team and found some chemistry with his teammates. He’s hoping to finish the year strong into the playoffs.

What does my future here look like? Well I hope to be drafted in the first 2 rounds this season. I have been maxing out my player in TPE and so I will have too much to stay down next season unless I forgo earning for a few weeks. Time will tell what I do.

  5. Toronto News reporter Rachel Snype caught up with upcoming VHL draftee Trevor Van Lagen to discuss his VHLM season and his preparations for the VHL draft.

Rachel: Welcome back to the show Trevor!

Trevor: Thanks for having me again Rachel!

Rachel: Time flies, doesn’t it? Feels like we just sat down to discuss your upcoming VHLM rookie season and here we are heading down the stretch run. How has your first year been?

Trevor: It’s been a good ride so far! We are winning much more than we are losing and my team has done a nice job developing me and my teammates as we prepare for the VHL.

Rachel: Speaking of the VHL, the draft is coming up and you have been climbing the rankings all season. Where do you anticipate being drafted?

Trevor: At first I really didn’t know as the draft class is so deep this year but more recently it’s been clearing up. I think I should be a second round pick this year.

Rachel: Is that somewhere you would be happy to be picked?

Trevor: I would like to think of myself as a first round talent, I mean I’m a big bodied, skilled center.  But I’ll be happy where ever I get picked.

Rachel: Do you plan on making the jump straight to the VHL or are you planning on withholding your development in order to go a second year in the VHLM?

Trevor: Honestly, I’ve been toying with the idea of staying back one more year. I would like to have a year to dominate in the VHLM before I make the jump to the VHL.  It’s not confirmed yet as I am still tossing it back and forth but we will see as the season develops.

Rachel: Earlier this season when we chatted, you said your personal stats don’t matter. Of course that was the right thing to say but looking back, what were your expectations and how have you fared in that respect so far?

Trevor: I didn’t set personal stat goals for the year but I was hoping I could be a regular contributor on this team. So far being just shy of a point per game player and one of the top secondary scorers on Halifax, I think from that view point the season has been a success so far.

Rachel: Most of the season you have been getting second line minutes. For a few games you were promoted to first line alongside Gaudette. How was that experience?

Trevor: I was certainly thrilled to been awarded the chance at top line duties because it showed our GMs faith in me and the fact that he liked what he was seeing from me so far. @Gaudette is an amazing player and playing with him was such an honour.  He’s our captain for a reason as he is our best player on the ice nearly every night.

Rachel: Just recently Halifax underwent a bit of a management change. Can you share your thoughts?

Trevor: Nothing but good comes from this change. @Acydburn is a legend in the making. A true prodigy in the GM ranks of the VHL. I’m really excited about Halifax’s future for sure!

Rachel: Thanks again for doing this Trevor! Good luck with the remainder of the season and with being drafted. Whoever selects you is getting a stud of a player!

Trevor: Thank you so much Rachel!

    Alright this weeks questions boys!

(these were inspired by the NHL Draft Combine this week)

1.) There's a 50/50 chance of a 20 foot python who hasn't eaten in five months in the hallway. Out of everyone in the locker room who is going out first?

5.) What is the most bizarre question you have been asked in a press conference during your career and who asked it?

6.) What is the craziest thing a puck bunny has ever done for your attention?

7.) What color hockey tape do you use?

8.) Who is the weirdest Player in our locker room?

I went with 8 questions this week to give you some more variety. Pick your favorite 6 :)

    2. I get fired up once my skates hit the ice. Before that I’m as calm as Kawhi.

  9. As the first half of the season is just about come and gone, it’s time to reflect on just how much Van Lagen has grown as a player.

His overall stat line of 10g-21a-(+2) in 34 games played is a solid stat line for the rookie.  However his growth this year off the ice is not quite reflecting in his play on it, at least not in the capacity he thought it would.

Van Lagen quickly increased his scoring ability to a astonishing 80 but his scoring never increased. In fact, he has never had a multi-goal game through his first 34 games. His only multi-game goal streak happened in his first 3 games of the season.

He has worked on other areas of his game too, most notably his defence to 65 and his puck handling to 67. Let’s break up his first 17 games from his last 17 games to show where his improvement has happened:

    First 17: 6g-10a-(-4)-54sh-24h

    Last 17: 4g-11a-(+6)-50sh-23h

As we can tell, his offence has not improved at all (at least not in his stats) but it’s his defence — a +10 difference that has him proud of his stride towards becoming more of a 2 way player.  Once the offensive improvements starts showing up in the box scores, Van Lagen will have become a premier player in the VHLM and scouts of the VHL will surely be looking.
