Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

It is THEME WEEK, and as such, my FREEDOM OF SPEECH has ONCE AGAIN BEEN ABRIDGED by something I don't care to do but have to anyway if I want a doubles week. And I'm a sucker for a good doubles week, so I will once again suck it up and get stepped on by Big Media Spot.

Also--this thread will forever be one of the greatest positive moments of mutual appreciation in this league, and this week will never beat it. There's something special about getting together to say nice things about each other without being COERCED by the BIG MAN IN CORPORATE.

    Anyway.

    ...in no particular order!

@Berocka - I know I've mentioned your name in a few of these posts, but I don't think I've been closer to anyone in a sim league than you (and that says something big). It's now been over three whole years since you joined the league, and you've been with me in some respect for most of it, whether it's as a player, an AGM, or both. I don't know how one can put up with being made fun of as much as I chose to make fun of you for a while and still enjoy the company of the bully, but I'm not complaining--sometimes I feel weird that I was as much of an asshole as I was at one point, but I think it's a great thing that you were able to see past that and find a lonely college kid who really just wanted someone to talk to. I think I've seen the real side of you (and vice versa), and you're going to be an amazing dad.

@Spartan, @Doomsday, and @thadthrasher - Probably more than anyone else, you've taken an interest in how I'm doing in life and what's going on. I know I'm not always one to reach out, but rest assured that I appreciate it when you do. Add that to the fact that you're great members of the league otherwise, and I think you should be really proud of who you are--I hope you're just as amazing in real life as you are online.

@fonziGG, @Dom, and @fromtheinside - There are others for sure, but you two came to mind right away when I tried to think of other people I can reason with behind the scenes. That doesn't (and shouldn't) mean that we always agree on every little thing, but I feel that my point of view is sincerely read and understood with you. And yes, I could probably ping most of the BoG, but I figured I'd stop at a few.

@Dil, @samx, @Zack, @a_Ferk, @Arce, @N0HBDY, @jacobcarson877, and I'm sure I'm forgetting many others - thank you for being an absolute joy to interact with on Discord. A lot of the time, I'll write off the league server as an annoying place, but you remind me that there's more to it than that.

@Renomitsu - I've seen you pop in a couple times lately, so I'm sure you'll see this at some point. You've always been one of my favorite members of any league, and along with being reasonable and interesting and really smart, you've never been anything other than nice to me (even though, given how busy your life is, I'm sure there are days when you don't feel like it).

@NSG - I know we don't really interact much outside of the forums, but the energy you bring to your posts and replies is what the world needs. I don't read as many articles as I used to, but I try to pop into yours when I see them because I know they're going to be interesting.

@Devise - Thanks for keeping Town of Whatever going lately! With school wrapping up, I didn't have a ton of motivation to do it myself over the past however-much-time, so I really appreciate you stepping in and even going so far as creating your own game. I know I haven't played it yet, but it seems like a fun time!

@Garsh, @Baozi, @frescoelmo, @JeffD, @ajwllmsn, and I'm sure some others - thank you for disagreeing with me on one thing or another at some point. The league should never be an echo chamber and I never want to be the one screaming loud enough that others feel afraid to talk. It's also really healthy to consider other viewpoints, and the fact that I'm on good terms with all of you says something about our community's ability to forgive, forget, and accept.

@Quik, @bigAL, @Radcow, @enigmatic, @Cxsquared, @Blazzer, @Brrbisbrr, and so many others who are no longer active and currently escape my mind - I MISS YOU! I hope you see this ping at some point and know that someone here thought of you and placed you in the category of "cool people". I'd love to see you back in it at some point--and even if not, please hit me up and let me know how you're doing.

To anyone else I forgot to ping who appreciates me on some level - thank you for that. Ironically, if you feel left out, that means a lot to me.

And to anyone else - thank you for being you regardless.

Blazzer reacted to JeffD in I guess this is a Chicago Phoenix appreciation post
It is theme week and I finally have a player again so it is time to talk about who I appreciate within the league. I’ve been in and out of the VHL since the very start almost 15 years ago, and returned to full activity almost exactly three years ago, so I have interacted with a lot of different members from different eras during my time here. I’m not quite sure which direction this article is going to go in yet but let’s see where typing this up takes me. Let’s talk about some of the people I appreciate most in the VHL.

@solas - Jean Pierre Camus was my first draft pick as the Chicago Phoenix GM and he, along with most of the core selected in those first couple of seasons, decided to take a flier on me as a general manager and play their entire careers with us. Solas quickly became one of my favourite VHL members while talking to him in our locker room and his personality was definitely a huge part of why those early Chicago locker room days, despite all the losing and lack of players, were bearable. Between his insane Jeopardy knowledge and his willingness to really just talk about anything he is an enormous reason why the Chciago locker room became what it did during the peak years, and I have no doubt in my mind my tenure as Chicago general manager would not have been nearly as enjoyable as it has been if I had no selected his player 7th overall all those season’s ago.

@fishy - Mine and fishy’s VHL interactions did not get off to the best of starts way back when I drafted their player, Matty Socks, 22nd overall in S73. It was my first draft as a VHL general manager and while I reached out to players I considered with my top end picks, I had not reached out to fishy before selecting Socks. Of course since then Socks ended up playing his entire career with the Chicago Phoenix, and there are many things that I appreciate about fishy, but the first thing was that they gave me perspective on what it meant to be a general manager and how much even a low effort thing such as reaching out to a prospect, even if they are not one at the top of draft boards, can mean to that person. Ever since then I have made an effort to reach out to a lot more players in draft classes and the positive feedback I have received from doing so has made it completely worth it.

@Quik - Although he isn’t around too much anymore Quik is a user that I have always appreciated in the VHL. I first was in leagues with Quik before the VHL was a thing and Scotty was running leagues using a Playstation 2, and we interacted every once in a while. However when I selected Christian Mingle second overall in the S74 draft and had him join the Chicago locker room I knew immediately I had made the right selection. Not only was Quik, with all of his experience throughout the years in the VHL, a great resource for myself as a new general manager, his personality and willingness to bring activity to the Chicago locker room really galvanized that core into the powerhouse it became. Quik would instantly answer any questions I had and would often give me suggestions that would lead to further success for the team, but his biggest contribution was his ability to make friends with everyone on the team and really keep those users together. Quik was the special ingredient that made those Chicago teams what they were and for that I appreciate him and hope he can make a return in the future.

@Blazzer - Blazzer is no longer active in the VHL but still comes by the Chicago locker room every once in a while and it is always a nice surprise when she does. My first interactions with Blazzer were when she, Quik and myself would be talking in the VHL general chat early in the mornings and the topic of conversation often turned to Quik’s post-coffee bowel movements. After selecting Quik’s player with the second overall pick in the draft, and knowing how social Blazzer was with Quik and myself, I made it an absolute priority to pick her player, and it may have been one of the best picks I ever could have made. Blazzer soon became my first, and only to date, assistant general manager and was an immense help to me in my role. Someday we will have to play some Valorant if you still do.

I guess this just kind of became a Chicago Phoenix appreciation post but honestly it would be kind of hard for it not to be. These four users, all of whom played their entire careers for the Phoenix, made what would normally be a very tough job as a VHL general manager very easy.  While building this early Chicago core I tried to prioritize the members over the players but even I had no idea that this group would become what it did. I am just very happy that through the tough times that the pandemic brought upon us I could have this small group of users that I could pretty much talk to about anything without judgment, and I hope all of them felt the same way. I’m not sure I truly appreciated what we had at the time but if I had not had that locker room to distract me throughout those times of isolation I’m not sure how I would have coped with that terrible situation. The ability to just hop into Discord at any moment and be able to talk about anything was a godsend during those times.

Anyway this has kind of dragged on at this point, and I did not expect to write this much so late on a Sunday, but it kind of just happened. There are of course many other members I appreciate for many different reasons, but these were the four that popped into my mind first, and it kind of fit a theme.

Hello and welcome to another 500 word media spot hosted by yours truly, Mr. Rory, co-host of legendary podcast three podcasts playing at once. This week, we could not find a time to schedule a recording or live show, so here is me earing 6 TPE in lieu. This evenings topics will include whatever tf i think about and then have up to 500 words in space to say those things.

Our first topic will be the naming of new general managers in many leagues! Very exciting. I was named general manager of the Los Angeles Stars which is good because the team name counts for three words, unlike Dom and Acyd's new team: the Malmo Nighthawks and Prague Nightmare or whatever tf they're called. It is quite easy to say that I won that portion of the GM shuffle.

The other part I won was the trades I made! LA is old and now we have some more youth so the ENTIRE team doesn't retire in 2 season. I also do not think 11th overall lands the type of player I would want in the draft, and trading up while we're in win now mode seems bad to me. I think I'll get a good value pick with 32 overall but I'm also not opposed to dumping it so I can skip the draft night 😎. Dan Dan is my SBA gm so now if I go inactive he can do the same to me, a perfect way for both of us to have a desire to win! Hopefully the RAIL and the STARS can celebrate their winnings together. Sam is obviously a great member in the league, took over my team in Halifax, and was LA's first AGM. She finally gets the chance to play for the team! If the Rush ends up in Switzerland though, she will be cut from the roster, Salzburg Rush 4 ever. Tui Sova also joins the Stars after finishing his rookie contract. On this trade, I had talked to Dom before naming v.2 my AGM and didn't want the lad to come to LA via free agency without Malmo getting any compensation. Happy to pay the price that I paid for him and I'm happy that Dom was willing to move his rights, as we would've pursued another route for our 1D otherwise.

The Star's holes are pretty gaping right now, we are missing a goaler and need to acquire one before 8 games have passed. After years of Esso's Doug Dimmadome being best while he was 300-700 TPE, I will be refusing to pay more then 3 million dollars for one. Solas' Jean Pierre Camus' MVP caliber season is the only argument against this thinking. Victor's Rara Rasputin does perform well in playoffs, but he's been doing that before he was worth 5.5 million too! Free agency has some goaltending options and the pipeline for teams needing goalers is wide open. Keep an eye on the goalies that are pending FA - they are going to be the most active on the first day of free agency. we also need a center but whatever i'll figure it out thanks bye

This team will lean heavily on Cabe McJake @Red and Phil The Rock Johnson @Phil who will need to step up in a big way this tournament. Aike Van Giersbergen @enigmatic will also need to stand on their head this tournament for Team Western Europe to have any hope, in 8 games this past season Van Giersbergen had a 0.920 SV% and a 3.34 GAA. Daniel Janser @Daniel Janser and Tadhg Byrne @teknonym will also look to make a name for themselves as they are the only 2 VHLM players to make a World Cup team and are heading into the VHL and VHLE drafts this offseason.

Defensively  this team is nothing to laugh at with Kasper Kankkunen @16z and Battre Sandstrom @Acydburn who had 90 and 89 points last season respectively. The biggest question mark for this team is in goal with Papa Emeritus @Beketov who will look to prove that they are the goalie of not just Team Nordic’s future, but also Moscow’s, In the World Juniors last season Emeritus had a 0.939 SV% and 2.33 GAA in 6 round robin games.

Additionally, Eagles @Greg_Di and Welch @Juice previously represented the Mercenaries in Season 78. Last time out Tsujimoto led the way with 7 goals and 17 points in 12 games. The biggest X-factor for this team comes in goal with Doug Dimmadome who will look to repeat his season 78 play which saw him record a 0.925 SV% and 2.69 GAA in 8 round robin games.

    Hello everyone,

First, we'd like to thank everyone that applied. We appreciate you taking the time out of your day to show interest and go through the application process. Next, a reminder that just because you weren't chosen, doesn't mean you didn't have a chance, weren't considered or won't have a chance in the future. The best part about this tournament is that everyone has a chance no matter their time here or experience! However, there's only so much space to go around! However, we got a lot of exceptional members applying and with some help from the amazing @BladeMaiden, we were able to narrow down this amazing list to the following five gms. I'm really excited for the list that we have chosen this season and believe it's an excellent group that will do well.

With that being said, please join me in congratulating the following members:

Congrats to those who were named above and GOOD LUCK.   This tournament is an exciting, fun way to introduce people to a lot of things the VHL has to offer and that includes GMing. We look forward to working with you guys throughout the tournament and making it as special as it has become. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me both on the forum/Discord.

Also It might have been a small footnote at the top but with all sincerity I thank @BladeMaiden who helped me find some amazing candidates. Without you this process would have taken twice if not three times as long and would be much harder without a second pair of eyes.

    Thanks,

The Chicago Phoenix have continued to roll through the season and have eclipsed the 100 point plateau. While they likely will not be winning the North American conference, as they have in the past, they will be going into the playoffs playing very well. Of note is Julian Nousiainen who has passed the 100 point mark for the second time in his career, having an incredible 118 points with five games still remaining. Matty Socks, lifetime member of the Chicago Phoenix, has also hit 100 points for the first time in their career with an extremely impressive 29 goals and 71 assists from the backend. Add to that 161 hits and 149 shot blocks and there is definitely a possibility for some post-season hardware coming their way.

While they have not been on the same kind of heater that saw them win 26 games straight at one point this season there is no doubt what the Chicago Phoenix have done this season has been very special and while they will be losing a large portion of their roster to retirement this offseason they can be proud of what they have done.

My player has been in the VHL for many seasons now and retirement is on the horizon soon. Xin is one of the players that has never been traded and has never experienced playing with another team, being a Chicago player for his entire hockey career. His statistics dating back to second or third season in the VHL, was a little boring and dull. You have to agree except for his fighting history and penalty minutes. Everyone in the Chicago locker room would laugh at the number of fights he has lost. Moreover, he even is a record holder in the unofficial awards for most fights lost in a season! I say that's a pretty good achievement to look back on

However, Xin seems to be only getting started with his career. The older he gets, the more into his prime he looks. For every season at the moment, he has only shown improvement in shots, points and even his penalty in minutes. It seems like the depreciation isn't doing much to his performance just like his fellow teammate, Christian Mingle that is still hitting his shots. As GM Jeffrey has mentioned, this is supposedly the last deep playoff run attempt that the team is going for because veterans like Camus and Socks are retiring soon.

This is the last season where the squad will play together on the ice and Xin can be seen to be soaking it all in.

    S80 Chicago Phoenix Team Captains

I completely forgot to post this last week, I guess that goes hand in hand with the whole I'm inactive thing. I am proud to announce the team captains for the current iteration of the Chicago Phoenix! We are trying to make one last run with the long term core of this team, and I think these captains, as voted on by their teammates, fit the roles perfectly.

    Team Captain: D - Matty Socks @fishy
Alternate Captain: RW - Lee Xin @Blazzer
Alternate Captain: G - Jean PIerre Camus @solas

These are three career players for the Chicago Phoenix and are also among the best players of the current generation and I could not be happier to have them representing us!
