The season 86 Victory Cup winner, The Calgary Wranglers have become a powerhouse in the VHL. While the team is home to superstar forward Daniel Janser @Daniel Janser, the 8th overall pick in the season 81 draft, a couple seasons later, there is one distinct day in which Calgary transformed from a playoff hopeful to a true contender, April 6th; the Season 83 VHL Draft!

Coming into this draft Calgary held only 1 first round pick, 10th overall. Then GM @Ricer13 got busy and made a series of trades to move up in the draft and pick up 2 more firsts for veteran players. The first domino to fall was a big one as Calgary traded Erlantz Jokinen @jRuutu and Gustislav Nasherov @Vat to Helsinki in exchange for Bob Chicoine @PoignardLeclerc11, Lenny Sanderson @Gally, the season 83 Seattle 1st (9th overall), the season 84 Helsinki 2nd, and the season 84 Helsinki 3rd. Shortly after Calgary would trade Reylynn Reinhart @Ricer13 to Prague in exchange for Riga’s season 83 1st (13th overall). Lasty, Calgary would move up from their own 1st as they would trade it and the previously acquired season 84 Helsinki 2nd to New York in exchange for the 5th overall pick.

With Vancouver trading away Erlantz Jokinen they were in need of a number 1 defensemen, and they addressed that with their 5th overall pick in AirRig GoodBrandSun @Rhynex Entertainment. GoodBrandSun was exactly what Calgary needed as they would hit the ground running and post a ridiculous season right away which would see them take home the Jake Wylde Trophy as the leagues top defensive defensemen. After a slight sophomore slump which saw them record only 34 points, GoodBrandSun hit the ground running in season 85 and has never looked back. To date GoodBrandSun has recorded an impressive 61 goals and 228 assists for a total of 289 points in 305 career games. Furthermore they have shined on the defensive side of the puck with 530 hots and 638 shots blocked.

After drafting GoodBrandSun at 5th overall, GM Ricer had his eyes set on a pair of forwards that would truly make Calgary’s offense a force to be reckoned with. The first one off of the board was Leandro Goncalves @leandrofg, the 9th overall pick. Gonclaves would spend season 83 in the VHLE with Vasteras, where you would post a nice 69 points in 72 games played. Upon coming up to the VHL, Goncalves had a very respectable rookie season with 24 goals and 18 assists. Unlike GoodBrandSun, Gonclaves took a huge step forward in their 2nd season and has been over a point per game since then and has amassed 102 goals and 115 assists for a total of 217 points in 233 games played. In Season 86 Goncalves really stepped up their physical game as they jumped from 55 hits in Season 85, to 184 in 86.

With Calgary’s final selection in the Season 83 1st round, Calgary selected Landon Wolanin @jacobcarson877 at 13th overall. Wolanin would spend Season 83 in the VHLE with Istanbul where he would have a above average season with 24 goals and 31 assists for 55 points. Upon coming to the VHL Wolanin would make strides forward each and every season, in their rookie season Wolanin posted 23 goals and 22 assists for 45 points and has followed that up with 87, and 99 points in seasons 85 and 86 respectively. Currently Wolanin has 20 points in 17 games this season. We can look for Wolanin to hopefully continue their progression and cross the 100 point mark this season.

Calgary has continued to build around these players with more recent draft picks in Phil Strasmore @Phil, Sax Justice @Eso, Larry Abass Jr @RileyL, and Vincent Laroche-Gagnier @vincentlg2007. This Calgary team truly has a bright future and will look to finally capture the elusive Continental Cup this season having finally solved issues in goal by brining in VHL veteran Oskar Lindbergh @Doomsday to shore up the crease. The season 83 draft is one that the wranglers can look back to fondly and a strong draft has put Calgary in the position they are today having just come off a Victory Cup win and with their eyes set on bigger things.

Season 87 have officially begun, we found time to speak with Calgary Wranglers star defenseman AirRig GoodBrandSun @Rhynex Entertainment, who had recently returned to the Calgary Wranglers after winning a Bronze medal at the World Championships.

Reporter: Hello AirRig! Good to see you! Congratulations on your Bronze medal at the World Championships! How was your experience at the Worlds?

AG: Hello. The World Championships was a great experience. Definitely did not do so well and could have had a better result, but it is always nice to win something as oppose to losing. A good learning experience.

Reporter: How are you finding your game so far in Season 87?

AG:  We are not having a good start to the season. I have not been playing very well either. 2 goals in 11 games is not quiet to standard, I could definitely play better. I need to put more pucks to the net and pass the puck more to open teammates. The season will go by quickly, need to get back to the basics and work quickly to get back to where I need to be.

Reporter: Sounds good! Best of luck for the season!

The Mysteries of My Lack of Playoff Success

Playoffs is where champions are born. Players bring out the best of themselves and the games' intensity rises to the highest levels. Teams that perform well tend to see the results from their players whom are on hot streaks and doing well, but for some reason unbeknownst to me, I have not found my share of VHL playoffs success, regardless of how well or poorly my player plays and how well the team had performed in the regular season and punching the tickets to the after party (post season) dance.

My first experience of the VHL playoffs comes in the form of Rhynex Entertainment in Season 78. This would be Rhynex entertainment's first and only appearance the in VHL playoffs as part of a, at that time, up and coming young and brilliant looking New York Americans team. The New York Americans finished Season 78 with the 1st wild card seat and end up facing the D.C Dragons in a best of 5 series for the final playoffs spot in the North American conference. Rhynex Entertainment had an incredible and fantastic playoffs that season, notching an unbelievable 3 goals, 5 assists (8 points) in 4 games before the New York Americans fell to the D.C. Dragons in game 4. In what looked like a promising initiation to a long career of post season play, I unfortunately don't see the lights of the post season again with my first gen player, Rhynex Entertainment.

Skip a few seasons and the retirement of Rhynex Entertainment, I found myself a second chance with the creation of AirRig GoodBrandSun and being drafted into a @Ricer13 built Calgary Wranglers franchise. @Ricer13 is someone whom I personally feel is an excellent GM. Someone who is brilliant when it comes to building winning teams, and with a young team, @Ricer13 builds a team that makes the Season 83 playoffs without any defensive core. AirRig GoodBrandSun was a huge part of that empty d core. The Calgary Wranglers surprised that season in Season 83, taking 3rd seat in the North American conference and skipping the wild card games. AirRig GoodBrandSun was horrid in the Season 83 VHL playoffs. Not a good taste of the post season. I go 0 -2 in my VHL post season experience. 1 good post season performance and 1 terrible playoffs performance, but both with the same results. Failure. But my hopes are sky high as I know the Calgary Wranglers are only going to get better as the young and promising prospects will grow and form an exciting and tremendous team situated in the cold Albertan city.

AirRig GoodBrandSun and the Calgary Wranglers continue to find plenty of regular season success and growth as the team and their young players grow over the next three seasons. GM @Ricer13 was able to draft and monopolize 3 studs from the S83 VHL draft (Landon Wolanin @jacobcarson877 , Leandro Goncalves @leandrofg , and of course AirRig GoodBrandSun) and develop a team centered around these 1000 TPA players and alongside other superstar players in the likes of Saku Kotkakoivu @DollarAndADream , Erlantz Jokinen @jRuutu , and Daniel Janser @Daniel Janser. However when the playoffs arrive after each superb regular season entries that included top seat finishes in Season 85 and 86, the same old stories came about. A devastating short post season.

Season 86, a first round exit to the eventual Champions in the Vancouver Wolves, 1 - 4 series, AirRig GoodBrandSun was not good during that series, ending with only 1 goal and 1 assist, but a +5. Season 85 was also a first round exit. 2 - 4 series loss to the Chicago Phoenix. AirRig GoodBrandSun had 3 goals and 3 assists, point per game in that series. And, ironically Season 84, where Calgary Wranglers finished the regular season with their worst position in the 4 seasons, AirRig GoodBrandSun and the Calgary Wranglers played the most games in the post season. 7 games total, but a lost in the first round from a 0 - 4 sweep by the D.C. Dragons. Devastation after an excellent 3 - 0 sweep victory to get to the playoffs with the Wild Card series victory against the Toronto Legion. AirRig GoodBrandSun had 3 goals, 2 assists in those 7 games.

I have experienced 5 different post season - playoff seasons so far in the VHL. Each with different circumstances, but each ending with the same results, either not making the playoffs, or falling short and losing in the first round. Season 78 was quite unfortunate, especially given how well Rhynex Entertainment performed. Season 83 was a surprise and an expected weak post season showing, 0 - 4 playoffs first round sweep. But then the surprising poor showings for the following three seasons, especially the later seasons in S85 and S86, where the Calgary Wranglers were better, top ranked teams, but ending worse off than their weaker counterpart of S84. A weird post season deprovement for Calgary, from one season to the next. So what is the reason for my lack of playoffs success? Some say it is because I stayed too long and loyal to the cursed team in the New York Americans with Rhynex Entertainment (who had an entire career with the New York Americans). But what about the Calgary Wranglers? AirRig GoodBrandSun is by far a better player than Rhynex Entertainment had ever been. Yet, post season and playoffs performance-wise, a much weaker showing abide playing a different position and era. Some suggest it is also due to playing for a cursed team, and that the Calgary Wranglers should change their name to the Calgary Maple Leafs. Or perhaps, it is simply me. Maybe I am the curse? It is hard to tell. I have had plenty of VHLM success with both of my players, abide never winning any championships and tournament trophies, but a couple of runner ups. Moreover, I have won (a trophy-less) tournament with Team Canada at the Season 82 World Juniors. So, maybe I am not the curse. Kris Rice @Ricer13 once suggested that the real cause of Calgary Wrangler's lack of post season success could simply be the lack of luck and the unfortunate tightness and evenness of all the teams in the North American Conference. I will wait it out and see how things end up in a few more seasons, as it seems only time will tell me whether I would ever find post season success in the VHL. In the meantime, this is my rant on the mysteries of my lack of playoffs success.

Rhynex Entertainment got a reaction from jacobcarson877 in VHL S86 Playoffs Interview
The Season 86 VHL playoffs is underway and we found time to speak with Calgary Wranglers star defenseman AirRig GoodBrandSun @Rhynex Entertainment, whose team is currently in a pickle.

Reporter: Hello AirRig! Good to see you! The VHL playoffs is not exactly going well for you and your team. How are you going to shave off elimination and keep the series going as you return home for game 5, down 1 - 3 in the series?

AG: Hello. It's been a tough series against the Vancouver Wolves. They're an excellent team and we've not been playing very well. We need to get back to the basics and play our game. We need to play how we normally play and play shift by shift. There's still a lot of hockey left. We're just not used to this weird snow in Vancouver. They never have this much snow! And here I thought we'll do better since it snows at Calgary all the time!

Reporter: What would you do differently to perform more productively in game 5?

AG:  Like I said previously. Just got to get back to the basics and take it shift by shift. Land a couple big hits, and block a few more shots and throw everything at the net. We need to put more traffic in front and bring up the defensively intensity. We need the fans to be loud, we draw off the good vibes from our cheering fans!

Reporter: Best of luck in the rest of the playoffs! You heard your AC, make some noise Wranglers' fans!

Rhynex Entertainment reacted to Spartan in How Season 83 Players Have Become The VHL's Top Experimental Subjects
Nice write-up here, you're right that S83's will be guinea pigs of sorts. They will be the first class to fully experience the new depreciation system as a 9 season player in the S83 class will face all 4 depreciation hits. It'll certainly be interesting to see how they manage, and I hope we gave them all enough time to adequately adjust as well.

Regarding the pre-hybrid stats, we're getting to a point where very few players will exist in that range. It's really just the S80 and 81 players that experienced the meta era, but they would have been rookies and sophomores so generally not a ton of points. For some assurance, we do factor in the eras and scoring trends when discussing players for the HOF, so don't worry about the S80 stats vs S83 players' stats at that point.

How Season 83 Players Have Become The VHL's Top Experimental Subjects

As we go through seasons after seasons of VHL simulations, we find loop holes and tricks in beating the system and making a meta for how to be "good" in the VHL simulations. I personally experienced the high flying, high scoring era, as a forward playing in the speedy SC and DF VHL in the form of Rhynex Entertainment. And then the transformation happens for my 2nd gen player in AirRig GoodBrandSun.
AirRig GoodBrandSun first entered the VHL in Season 83 as a Season 83 rookie. This also so happened to be the first season the VHL had integrated the new Hybrid stats system for skaters. While players who were drafted and started before Season 83 had a chance to inflate their career stats with a pre-hybrid player characteristics. Players drafted and started the VHL in Season 83 will face the full bulk of the "Hybrid Laws".

What are these "Hybrid Laws" you ask? The "Hybrid Laws" are what I call the transformation of the skater's characteristics for simulation and the heavy burden of the new depreciation formation that follows. Players created and drafted before Season 83 would be subjected to an increased advantage in career points and averages compared to players drafted in Season 83 and onwards. And thus Season 83 drafted players have become the VHL's top experimental subjects. Season 83 players who started to play in the VHL in Season 83 would experience what all new players would experience as the first hand experiencer. They will have the "norm" career statistics without any inflated pre-hybrid career stats.

I'm sure many of you are asking "What are you talking about? How are Season 83 drafted players the first to experience the "norm" career statistics when most Season 82 players would start their VHL careers in Season 83?". Well this is how I understand things, and I could very well have misinterpreted things and I could be completely wrong. And please correct me if I am wrong, but if I understood things correctly, players drafted in Season 82, even if they started their VHL pro careers in Season 83, would be subjected to depreciation in 5 seasons (player creation + 6 season = VHL drafted player + 5 seasons, since a player is drafted into the VHL one season after its creation: ie. AirRig GoodBrandSun was created in Season 82 (VHLM Season 82 draft, and drafted into the VHL in Season 83; VHL Season 83 draft). Since that's the case, a player drafted into the VHL in Season 82, would have been created in Season 81. Season 81 + 6 seasons gives us Season 87 as first season with depreciation. We will face the full bulk of the new depreciation starting in Season 88, therefore even if the VHL drafted Season 82 player had started their VHL pro career in Season 83, they will still experience their first season of depreciation in Season 87, where the depreciation is of a weaker level. Of course, I would be completely reading things and understanding things incorrectly. But that's how I interpreted the rules. Of course, with players taking their sweet time with the minor leagues and entering pro a lot later than others, that complicates things for my little head, so I really don't understand how these things work, and I could be completely wrong.

On the other hand, a player created in Season 82, and drafted into the VHL in Season 83, they will be the first to face the full force of the "Hybrid Laws": First to experience Hybrid only player career stats and first to experience the full power of the new depreciation! Season 82 drafted VHL players would experience a weakened depreciation in their first season of depreciation in Season 87, while a Season 83 drafted VHL player will experience their first season of depreciation in Season 88. The new depreciation laws start in Season 88. Therefore, Season 83 players are the VHL's top experimental subjects as they would be the first to have only post-Hybrid VHL career stats while facing the full force of the new depreciation for their career.

    1. Trade deadline is upon us! We sit first in the conference. Albeit tied with 2 others. Do we need to make trade(s) for playoffs push?

Looks like we exchanged goaltenders, so that's cool, gonna miss Wumbo tho

    2. Tight race with Moscow and D.C. Who would be our biggest challenge for 1st in conference?

Moscow beat us last season, so gotta say them.

    3. What position is preferred for seating for playoffs?

first place, rag on the bottom feeders

    4. Once again, all our forwards are 20 goals scorers. What was the best offensive team you have played for and how good was that teams' offense?

Only Warsaw is what I know, and yeah our offense is amazing

    5. At what time should we start talking contracts?

either beginning of the season to lock up a star, or the end of the season, don't stress the players out

    6. How do you define a blockbuster trade?

if elite players are involved, or a possible lottery pick is involved

    1. If there is a trade that will help us win, I think we should.
    2. I think they are both great teams, but I think D.C. would be a bigger challenge.
    3. I think second would be a good spot to sit.
    4. I think it has to be this one. We have some elite scoring talent on this team, and I think it can be clearly seen.
    5. After the trade deadline would be a good time.
    6. I think that it needs to involve two players who, at the time, are classified as "elite" players for their team. I also believe a blockbuster trade could include multiple first round picks and prospects.
