Mom! Jacob is Doing Projects Again! [3/5]
jacobcarson877 replied to jacobcarson877's topic in VHL.com Articles
Come to Houston! Although realistically, crawling through each player on, each team, in each league is only like one and a quarter degrees of difficulty than crawling through each player on one team, and the mechanics are still the same, would just be a lot longer of a runtime -
We did it folks! Jacob is back in the M, where he belongs! I’m having so much fun already working with Houston and getting ready, quite frantically, for the VHLM Draft tonight. I’ve talked to some amazing people in the last couple days, had some amazing interviews and tracked a whole ton of stats here, after FINALLY figuring out a project I tried to start like 3 years ago. Just have to wrangle Google Drive to accept me and then that will be DONE done. Next up is a project to automatically track how my players are trending earnings-wise, which should give me a better picture of how to best help them move forward. This will also include building progress, so we can keep an eye on how everyone is doing there! Once I figured out the mechanism, the rest is falling into place nicely. I think I might now be able to attack the “additional stats” project where I dig into the Game Commentary to draw out passing stats, shots off rebound, takeaways, and the like! Should be able to use some tools that I’ve been learning this semester to make it much easier, and hopefully find some sort of meaningful information from that!

Houston Bulls Press Conference
jacobcarson877 replied to mattyIceman's topic in Team Press Conferences
1. It's honestly so exciting to be back in the M at all, but to be able to do it with Houston, who has such a rich history is real honour. Getting to do it alongside AJ, who pretty much IS my understanding of Houston's history, and being able to tap into the network of Houston ex-management and my own close compatriots is going to be a lot of fun. 2. This is definitely a super interesting time to be getting back into the M, which is why I knew I had to go for it this offseason. When S83 rolled around and I was last getting into M GMing, we had the great challenge of introducing the hybrid attributes. It left a ton of room for us to put our own personal hypotheses to the test, and it was essentially an ongoing research project. It feels like that again, nobody has the information advantage, so whoever figures this thing out first will run the VHLM for a while, and I hope that we can make it Houston! 3. Woods is going to have to be a breakout star this season for Moscow. It's all offense here, with skating and mentals where they need to be, it's all about converting on more and more chances. When 1100 happens, it's time to optimize for depreciation, but I imagine that won't be until about this time next offseason! 4. I'm about 4 weeks into my new college program in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. I'm learning a ton about wrangling data of all kinds into meaningful insights, and that's what I love to do! Anything that lets me look at it like an optimization puzzle is something I can get behind. Creatively I am a TTRPG guy, fusing my old-school styled upbringings with new-school gameplay philosophy. Part game-design, part creative writing, and very little actually playing haha. 5. I used to be a music guy, but I'm trying to ween myself off of using music for mood enhancement. I think I overdid it for a few years there, so now I'm trying to just exist in real space a lot more. If anything I'll throw on an ambient track or some indie or something that isn't invasive to my space. 6. I've got a ton of questions, so I'd be surprised if y'all didn't have any! I'm starting with my build guides and general team "indentity" brainstorming at the moment, trying to figure out how I think we can best guide player building habits for this kind of league structure. Then it'll be about preparing the draft and the sort of roster construction we want to accomplish. And finally we want to work with the VHL GMs to make sure they know that Houston is the place to draft high-quality, relaible players. And that starts with the players we have now, and that's the expectation we have going forward! -
Man is it cool to be back, and man is it cool to do it with one of my OG baby Marlins! Let's get down to business! Houston is so back

I like the Uncapped TPE package because it gives me an opportunity to actually claim some of the random thoughts I put out here regardless. I’ve been studying a lot of Natural Language Processing the last few days, and while I despise ChatGPT and all of it’s competitors, and I hate that every website has an annoying chatbot that doesn’t help you at all and takes up half of the screen, I am enjoying learning about how computers can be trained to understand our speech, even if we don’t follow any of the syntactic rules that were supposedly set out for us. I do hope to be able to turn some of this learning into some fun VHL projects. I’ve said for a while I wanted to turn the full game commentary into some additional stats for us, but never really figured out the tools. I’m still pretty new to web crawling and parsing through HTML, and afterwards trying to figure it out algorithmically sounded like a nightmare. But using some NLP, and altering some existing models to take on some of the hockey-specific and VHL specific jargon properly offers an exciting option for me. Still lots to learn, and I’m still hoping to do a traditional deep learning project for the VHL as well, but I’ll have to save that for next week’s article!

And a new season is upon us! I actually haven’t been bothered to look at the VHL games, and if the season rolled over that means there must have been a winner in Game 7! Congratulations to whichever team that was, but their time in the spotlight is over now! It’s time for primetime Jacob to come back, and Jillian Woods to follow suit. Donation made, Uncapped TPE Package acquired, and it’s long overdue that I catch back up to Leandro on the TPE charts! He’s had a real advantage this season on Fantasy Uncapped TPE, so I need to get back to my winning ways. I’ve applied to get back in the VHLM GM group, and both franchises are ones that I would love to be a part of. Vegas is really where it all began for me, and it really symbolizes many of the greatest developments in the art of GMing that have come around since I joined back in the day. They’re known for their dynastic pedigree, and that’s something I’d love to continue. Houston on the other hand is a bit of a new-school franchise. They’ve done a great job being the it spot for all new talent. They’ve got a great brand, and excellent energy. I think Houston became everything I had wanted to make San Diego, and I think I did a pretty great job. Either way, I’d love to come back, and bring everything I’ve learned to the VHLM. They deserve the best of the best, and I think when it comes to retention, I can be one of the top 10. I want to be a GM that VHL GMs can trust, that produces players ready to face the challenges of the VHL head-on with determination and smart planning. And I hope that there’s 2 candidates better suited for the VHLM than me, because that means the VHLM would gain 2 incredible new GMs! Happy S96 everyone!
