  1. Regardless of the name change, yes it is, and it is brutal
  2. Definitely more boring, but definitely safer for our mental health. I used to be sitting on the Create a Player page while hanging out with my friends so I could be the first one to pitch. I got a ton of waivers, but it was brutal. I wish there was a better middle ground, but this is certainly better for keeping GMs
  3. ucy doesn't take Ls anymore?

      sadie

seems like its working given halifax's last couple sims

  4. Every day I open the games, we win both games 4-2 and I get 2 assists I'm used to pain and agony! We just need a late season tumble and then I'll be back
  5. Man I miss those guys
  6. I don't think you can join Houston, but just remember who was up first to comment on this thread.
  7. Ah what the heck, let’s write some words. - First off, apparently Jillian Woods is pretty good. Not quite Jacob Stone good, but pretty good. Nice to be hanging in there with the big boys, as I prepare to cross 1000 TPE. - This has to be one of the most boring VHL seasons I’ve been a part of. Outside of that season and a half where London could not score a goal to save themselves, but managed to win enough 1-0 games to propel a HOF goaltending career, and ruin a few skaters’ HOF chances, this one is right there. Sure, we aren’t winning every game now, and Davos just sent us packing, but I have no nerves opening the sims, because I know we’ll be fine. Such a lame problem to have. - Houston is so confusing. We have a spectacular team, sure, having this many players is off-meta, but surely we should be scoring more goals than this. We’ve been .500 all season, and haven’t yet cracked 100 goals for. We’re middle of the pack in the first period, last among the teams trying in the 2nd and 3rd, and spend a lot of time in extra time. We don’t shoot at all, and we barely allow any shots. If defense were the key to a championship here, we’d probably be 3rd in line. Probably doesn’t help that we’re not getting Powerplay opportunities, because by percentage, we’re really good on the ones we’ve had. We’re simply always killing penalties. - It’s final project season for the term, so apologies for not being around as much, but December should be much more free!
  8. Congratulations on the great milestone! 1000 never gets old!
  9. Best people here but socially distanced
  10. How important is lore in a forum-based simulation hockey league, such as the VHL? Well, I don’t think this whole operation would have any value without it. STHS, contracts, TPE, none of that gives us a whole lot to work with when it comes to value. Sure, we can do TPE analysis and see who is scoring and who is not, but that’s pretty low-level, Jacob-has-no-creative-juices-left kind of analysis. Sure you could do a couple more interesting things with it, but the numbers coming out really aren’t the driving force of the league’s value. Imagine for a second that we were all doing this in isolation. No reactions on the forum, no replies. No Discord or forum messaging. In fact, you couldn’t even see other peoples’ posts. It was just you and STHS. Would this be as fun? Would you really come in every day, every week ready to create forum content all in the name of maybe getting some numbers spit back out at you? I know I wouldn’t. I’m a numbers guy through and through. My degree is in Computer Science, and I’m back for more, this time in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. I’m a numbers guy. And yes, my largest projects here have been crunching numbers to help figure out the best and brightest strategies for my teams, players, and the league to pursue. I know there are many others like me, and it’s been a pleasure to be able to see snippets of their work. For me, some of the excitement of the VHL is being able to learn to be the best. To find the hidden patterns that guide the sim into giving us better numbers, all within the context of the humanity of the puzzle. But I don’t think that on its own, that has much meaning. So what does have meaning, and why does the VHL need lore? The VHL, and all other sim leagues and forums beyond that, need loosely interconnected stories, winding bunny trails, and completely contradictory perspectives. The forum represents our collective experience and reactions to some arbitrary numbers spit out at us, and a loose expectation of outputs. Every week, we come in and we contribute to the lore of this site, and iteratively develop the narratives that go on to span years of real time. History plays a part in that, being able to track the differences over time, seeing notable outliers, and tracking paces and milestones. We do in-depth lore formalization with our Hall of Fame articles, and many people keep a strong collection of their own player and team’s lore. I can always count on the Vancouver crew to create a great interconnected lore between them, I can always count on JRuutu to recount some event of the week in a zany, out of proportion way that separates his work from the pack. I can count on VSN to give us some really high quality overviews of the current season, at least while the writers are still able to type words (the curse comes for us all!). The VHL only means something because we collectively decide that it does by putting out forum content. We record and output our interpretations of this collective reality, and set it in as solid of a stone as any other human lore can be. What we do is important, and is what will keep this league going for as long as it does. Excited to read about everyone else’s experiences this week!
  11. Welcome back!
  12. If the Hot Dog man taught us anything, never judge a hockey player by their physique! Whatever works for Mack works for me!
  13. Always been a big wildcard spot fan
  14. I do not have any in queue, and if I did, they would be rejected as they can only be done in the offseason Usually the reason it doesn't work for people is because you have to click on the type of reroll first, then purchase. The types don't really look like buttons, but they are. Let me know if you're still having any problems in the offseason!
  15. The 90th VHL point has been acquired. I have never scored more than 90 points in a league thus far in my career, and yet I have never scored any less. I am walking around, petrified, waiting to be turned into the great Wayne Gretzky, having my everything broken, again and again. It does not seem possible that I could score another point, and I now turn my focus towards everything else I could possibly do to support this blistering Menace squad. I dare not get on the ice, for fear of having my everything broken, but perhaps I could pass water to the bench. I’ll even make sure the GatorfuelBioAdeSteeel is properly labelled so players don’t splash themselves with it. Or perhaps I’ll start selling popcorn, or doing radio commentary? I wonder how long I could get away with just doing autographs before someone realizes I’m not playing anymore?
