Thought I'd give sig making a go, feedback appreciated :]

1). The weather is warming up! What is your ideal vacation spot or trip?
I was always a big fan of going to tropical places, like the Caribbean. They have nice food and drink and are very fun places in general.
2). After a long, hard game on the ice, what do you do to relax afterwards?
I like to do something more mindless but keeps my blood pumping, so sometimes I'll just hop on the bike and pedal for a little to wind down.
3). Do you have any goals you want to achieve before the end of the season?
I'm hoping to climb the draft class rankings and make it into the top half at the very least, so lots of hard work will be required.
4). What is the one thing you cannot leave home without?
Keys! Spent lots of my life being told I need them sewn into my clothes, so now I always make sure I have them.
5). If you follow the NHL, what is your favorite team? If not, what sports team do you root for?
I'm an Anaheim Ducks fan. It has been one rough season, but Zegras and Drysdale give me hope every time I watch them.
6). What came first, the chicken or the egg?
Probably the egg? Or maybe it was Anivia, I can't say for sure.

Review
I really like the font you chose for the name and the texture used on the surname! I think it helps the yellow text stand out from the yellow jersey and prevents it from looking super cluttered to the eye. I also like the distortion effect around the player cutout, and the blur effect adds depth to the overall edit. The contrast in the light and shadow is also really nice and adds nice detail to the image. However, I think the light effect + the distortion effect makes the white text for the first name a little difficult to read, so I think moving the light flare a little further from the name would have helped that. Overall, definitely a solid 8/10, big fan of this!

Review
That jersey swap is nuts! If you showed that to me with no context, I'd believe that the Avs had swapped their colours entirely! The background texture helps the blacks and reds pop really nicely, making them a standout feature of this edit. Having the 'Chicago Phoenix' text on the L's slant also adds a layer of interest to the edit and makes the whole piece really fun to look at! The faded L's also help the piece with depth and the negative space. I think the use of negative and positive space is really clever in this edit! The only extraordinarily minor critique I have is that the splatter effect on the left slightly obscures the number, but even then this is still an incredibly well crafted edit. I can see the amount of time you've put into your editing skills! 9.5/10

Matti Takala: From Turku to Philadelphia
Turku, Finland has been home to some of the greatest Finnish players of all time. The Koivu Brothers, Miikka Kiprusoff, all of them were household names in their playing days. Matti Takala hopes to add himself to that list someday.
 
Growing up in Finnish hockey culture, Matti Takala never stopped thinking about hockey. Thoughts of ice and pucks would sit in his thoughts quietly and he’d occasionally find himself drawing gameplans instead of writing school work. Matti only dreamed of making it to the SM-Liiga at the beginning, playing for TPS Turku and representing his hometown proudly. Donning the black jersey and scoring goals like he had been his whole U18 career.
 
Then he saw the VHL players.
 
VHL players were faster and stronger than SM-Liiga players. They hit harder, skated faster, shot the puck more accurately. It was like falling in love with hockey all over again. Matti set a new goal after watching the VHL players. Make it to the VHL, whatever the cost. If that meant flying halfway across the world, sobeit. If that meant waking up at 3am and training until 9pm, he’d do it. Whatever the cost.
 
As an 18-year-old, Takala had settled comfortably into the U20 TPS Turku team, acquiring an ‘A’ as well. In 47 U20 SM-Liiga games, Takala scored 23 goals and tallied 35 total points. His contributions to the U20 TPS team did not go unnoticed, with his callup to the SM-Liiga occurring midway through the season. Takala got his first taste of professional hockey in the SM-Liiga with TPS Turku. With a stat line of 3-1-4 in 4 games played, Takala showed great promise as an offensive force. He showed the crowd in the stands his potential to be an elite goal scoring forward, and he intended to break any ceilings that stood in his way. Matti Takala was not afraid to skate through fire to achieve his dream of making it to the VHL.
 
Takala’s dream recently became much closer to reality. Domini Maximus, general manager of the Philadelphia Reapers, called and asked if Takala wanted to start his VHLM journey. An offer no pro player can decline. Takala took the offer within a heartbeat. He’d have celebrated that night, but he had a game to play. He took to the ice for what could be the last time with TPS Turku and celebrated his signing with his teammates after a 4-1 win over JYP. Matti Takala has worked hard and he’s more than ready to kick it into overdrive for the VHLM.
 
Anything to get to the VHL and achieve his dream of lifting the Continental Cup.

Review
I'm going to describe my rating based on the assumption you used photoshop, but let me know if I'm wrong.
Seeing that it's your first sig, it's nice to see you understand some of the basics (brushes, text, render formatting). It's definitely a great start. Eventually you should get the hang of using some stocks and blending it in to add some more depth. I believe there's a page here somewhere that has some tutorials that will give you a some understanding on how some of the effects you see are done. 
I'd also head my way to dafont.com, as that is the database to see some nice fonts for graphics. 
As for the sig itself, I like the smoke effect at the bottom to provide depth, as well as the shadow effect you added.to the render I would have put your render on the left side though based on the direction he's looking, but that's personal preference. I'm going to give a 6.5/10 for now as a benchmark. I'd like to see you make another 👍
