Americans Looking for Big Things from S37 Draftees

The New York Americans have gone out this off-season and brought together a team that they hope will be able to lead them to a Continental Cup championship in the upcoming season. The team has been very active this past off-season signing notable free agents Wesley Kellinger and Tuomas Tukio. While these new signings, as well as returning stars such as Connor Low, Odin Tordahl and Xin Xie Xiao, will be looked at to carry most of the load for the Americans this next season, it is going to have to be the young guns from the S37 Draft class that will need to step up to set the Americans apart from the rest of the league.

The S37 draft saw the Americans hold the second, third and fourth overall picks in the draft and they decided to use it to round out their top two lines of forwards. With their selections they took Jakob Linholm, Tom Slaughter and Logan Laich to lead them into the future. This upcoming season will be the first time that all three of these picks will be playing together in the VHL and it has the Americans very excited to see what these 3 picks can do.

    Tom Slaughter

Tom Slaughter was one of the most highly touted prospects in recent memory and had the entire league excited for his arrival. He had amassed a ridiculous amount of practice hours during his time in the VHLM and was predicted to be one of the favorites to win rookie of the year. He didn't disappoint his first season and managed to rack up an impressive 76 points in 72 games and, just as he was predicted to do, he went on to win the top rookie award. He is expected to do even more damage in the upcoming season and is expected to be a fixture on the Americans top line for many years to come.

    Logan Laich

Logan Laich is another highly touted prospect but many people thought he could still use another season in the VHLM to polish his skills. The Americans thought differently and decided to keep him up in S37. While he managed to get an impressive 321 hits in the season his point totals were not impressive putting up a measly 12 points in 72 games. He has shown flashes of greatness and will be looked at to improve his offensive production in the upcoming season.

    Jakob Linholm

Linholm was the only one of the three picks to not play the VHL last season and was sent down to the minors to showcase his talents there. During his season with the Minot Gladiators he put up an impressive 129 points as their captain. He has a well-rounded game but nothing that seems to stand out. Just like Slaughter last season, Linholm is one of the favorites to win the Rookie of the Year award and help play a part in the Americans plans for a championship season.

These three young talents will be called upon this season to compete with the very best the game has to offer and perform well each and every night. The Americans is a franchise that demands success and these three will be looked at to elevate their game in the upcoming season and help show that the Americans struck gold in the S37 draft.

Yeah I disagree with some things with how the VHLM is set up but that doesn't mean I'm not going to play the game within the current rules.

I don't agree with the point Chris was originally trying to make, but he is 100% right on one thing: If you think a rule is wrong or exploitable, you should bring that up and try to change it. But as long as it isn't changed, or maybe if the majority of the people in charge don't think it needs to be changed at all, then it is your good right to take advantage of it just like everybody else. This is not hypocritical, in fact I think it is a very honest way to deal with the situation. Playing "holier than thou" doesn't help anyone around here, if you don't exploit it, somebody else will.

Technically I never made an offer for Jericho but I would have. Also I'm not a hypcrit in this situation since I'm not arguing or agreeing with the changes.

As for all the other nonsense above Jamie is right in whatever she is saying and anyone who says otherwise is wrong.

Yes, I took advantage of it.  Should I not? It was in place even if I didn't agree with it.  If I didn't take advantage of it, someone else would have.  Doesn't change that I think it shouldn't be like that so no one (including me) can take advantage of that sort of thing.

I will work within whatever rules are in place for the benefit of my team.  You can call it hypocritical but I am not the one who creates the rules.  If it were up to me, that rule was never in place for myself or others in the past to take advantage of.

    MAG 188 - Rookies Making a Post-Season Impact

There were a lot of excellent performances in the regular season by rookies this year.  However, the time of the year that often makes the careers of players is the playoffs.  This week’s Rookie Report will look at the three rookies performing in the playoffs and see how they have fared.  With Tom Slaughter, Logan Laich and other rookies not being involved in the playoffs, it has allowed for a couple others to take center stage.

    D – Slaeter Fjorsstrom (RIG) – 13 GP, 3 G, 7 A, 10 P, 18 H, 17 SB
Slaeter Fjorsstrom has become the face of all the rookies in the playoffs.  Fjorsstrom has a good chance to win the Christian Stolzschweiger this year and may be bringing home some team hardware as well.  His Riga Reign are going into game seven against the heavily favoured Davos Dynamo, and Slaeter has been one of their main performers along the way.  He leads all defenders on his team in scoring with ten points in the thirteen games he has played.  That is good enough for third overall on the Reign for scoring just behind Mikey Blade and Kameron Taylor.  Fjorsstrom has also been solid defensively which has been a big help for Riga with players like Malcolm Spud struggling to make the impact they are capable of.

    D – Phil Villeneuve (RIG) – 12 GP, 0 G, 5 A, 5 P, 33 H, 21 SB
Speaking of defenders that play for the Riga Reign, Phil Villeneuve is another player who fits this category.  Villeneuve is nowhere near the offensive or defensive presence that a player like Fjorsstrom is, but he is having a solid playoffs so far.  His five points are nothing earth-shattering but his physical play and interest in blocking shots have given his game more purpose in the series’ they have played.  If players like Villeneuve step up and continue to improve, Riga has a good chance to not only win the title this year but more in the future as well.

    D – Sami Kravinen (VAS) – 6 GP, 0 G, 3 A, 3 P, 18 H, 11 SB
The final rookie defender we will profile is Sami Kravinen.  Vasteras is unfortunately no longer in the playoffs after losing to the Riga Reign in the first round.  However, the performance of Sami Kravinen was pretty impressive for a depth defender.  Kravinen only had three points in the six games, but averaged three hits per game and almost two blocked shots per as well.  The Vasteras Iron Eagles will continue to have a bright future if players like Kravinen can perform at the level they are capable of.

There you have it.  This playoff’s only has three rookies playing in it and they are all young defenders.  With no forwards in the post-season, it seems that the often overlooked position of defense will get the spotlight for once.
