  4. Graphic courtesy of Leandrofg (Marcel's stats/Daniel's stats) And we are back to our native VHL-exports. The Wranglers played two matches since we last reported from the Jansers. Here are the summaries of said encounters. 3-4 (SO) This must be some kind of new record as in their fifth game, the Wranglers had to undergo shootout for the third time to find a winner. Unfortunately, it turned out to be the Legion who snatched the victory in a 4-3 match. In the middle of the first period, Janser scored twice within a minute, the first being a powerplay goal and the second an even strength marker. During the man advantage, Janser rushes along the boards, carrying the puck in Toronto's end. A quick pass to Wolanin, who immediately relays the disc to Strasmore. The Liverpool native lays the puck up for blueliner GoodBrandSun. The veteran back, winds up for a slapper, but the shot goes wide. However, the biscuit has enough momentum to come back into the slot, where Dan was already exchanging niceties with the Legion's defenders. He was the quickest to react on the returning puck and beat Lindbergh on the far post at point blank range. His second of the night was of a similar cut. A 'kick-and-rush' play by the Captain. Toronto back Hagel is first on the puck, but gets the nerves when he sees 215 pounds of fresh Strasmore skating towards him. His opening pass ends up at Phil's tape. He gives the pill to Left Wing Wolanin who has caught up on the rush. The Alternate Captain one-times it and misses the net. AirRig picks up the orphaned puck and has a go himself. Dan in his home territory, the opposing team's slot, deflects the rubber mid-air and sends the netminder to the wrong corner. In the second period, Sakamoto cuts the lead in half with their first goal of the season. In the final frame, Justice is served by Janser and Sax scores his first of the current campaign to reinstate the two-goal lead. Alas, Toronto scores two more goals, one of which in power play and ties the game. As the sudden death did not bring a decision, a shootout was necessary where fickle goddess Fortuna was on the Legion's side. Janser (2g/1a), Sakamoto (1g/1a) and Hagel (1g/0a) were named the three stars of the night. Why Daniel and Marcel's former team mate Ixazaluoh with his three helpers was not considered for a distinction is everybody's guess. Pedersen (.880) was slightly improved compared to their first game, but fell short against Lindbergh (.925). Calgary's powerplay (1/4) was decent as was the penalty kill (4/5). Marcel was noted with 0g, 0a, -1, 2 PIM (Hooking, lead to a goal against), 2 hits and 1sb. Daniel had 2g, 1a, +1, 2 PIM (Roughing, penalty was killed off), 6 hits, 1sb and 57.14FO%. 3-0 With Dahl celebrating his first shutout in the S86 season, the Wranglers defeat the Wolves 3-0. Despite both teams' best efforts, no goal was scored in the first frame. In the second period the arena became more lively, as Janser opened the score. It was again Strasmore, who intercepted a pass and in a relay via Janser, Wolanin, Janser, GoodBrandSun, Wolanin and finally Janser again, the puck ended up in Vancouver's net by the Captain's high-light reel wrap around marker. Wolanin on even strength and AirRig in power play (his self-proclaimed specialty) put the nails into the coffin. No further goals were scored by either team. The three stars went to Dahl (29 saves), Janser (1g/2a) and GoodBrandSun (1g/2a). Dahl was undisputed champion with his shutout and Fuhr (.903) despite a solid performance was sitting at the hind teat this time. The Wranglers' powerplay was lethal (1/1) and their boxplay obviously immaculate. Marcel had 0g, 0a, +0, 1 hit and 4sb to his name. Daniel achieved 1g, 2a, +2, 5 hits and 47.50% win rate at the draw. Here are the brothers' stats for this season sofar: Marcel: 6gp, 0g, 2a, 2pts, -2, 4 PIM, 11 hits, 10sb Daniel: 6gp, 6g, 6a, 12pts, +6, 12 PIM, 29 hits, 8sb, 1gwg, 1ppg, 58.11FO%, 3 First Star nominations Stay tuned for our continuous articles about the two Swiss hockey players and there quest for glory. https://vhlforum.com/topic/129587-a-tale-of-brothers-wind-of-change-reloaded/ https://vhlforum.com/topic/129578-vsn-presents-s85-vhl-awards/ https://vhlforum.com/topic/129697-a-tale-of-two-brothers-a-night-to-remember/ https://vhlforum.com/topic/129819-a-tale-of-two-brothers-into-the-breach-once-more/ https://vhlforum.com/topic/130003-a-tale-of-two-brothers-a-new-hope/ GM 35: Calgary Wranglers vs. Toronto Legion (vhlportal.com) GM 42: Vancouver Wolves vs. Calgary Wranglers (vhlportal.com) 4/5 uncapped package

  6. Graphic courtesy of Leandrofg (Marcel's stats/Daniel's stats) The S86 season is ago, and we will summarize the first four matches of the current Wranglers campaign for your reading pleasure. Let's get this show on the road, shall we? 4-2 In a revenge match against the franchise who ended Calgary's playout run, the Albertans came up on top in a 4-2 win. Sundin opened for the Windy City on a power play. A little more than three minutes later, it was the Wranglers' Captain to draw first blood for his team. Daniel is carrying the puck, attempting to enter Chicago's zone, but loses control of the rubber. Wolanin hoovers up the orphaned disc and passes it to Janser, entering the offensive zone. The Swiss relays the biscuit to GoodBrandSun who takes a shot, but same goes wide. The veteran defender picks up his own rebound and gives it another go... a miss. Daniel is first on the rebound and buries the puck coldblooded as befits a reigning Brooks awardee. Four minutes later, the elder Janser scores again to give the Wranglers a lead. Wolanin intercepts a pass by Skates and gives the puck to winger-turned-center Justice, who sees Dan lurking in the slot. Tape-to-tape pass to his Center, who one times it past Pearce. In the second period, Wolanin with a shorthanded goal and 'Lean Mean Frog' Gonçalves on even strength increase the Wranglers' lead, despite being outshot 25-11 in the middle frame. In the third period, the Phoenix pulled one back, but for the remainder of the game, Dahl shot the door. The three stars of the games were Janser (2g/1a), Wolanin (1g/2a) and Dahl (51 saves). Dahl (.962) proved all his critics wrong and kept the Wranglers in the game, showing Pearce (.875) how it is done. Calgary's power play was still rusty (0/2), but the penalty kill was decent (5/6) and even scored a goal. Marcel logged 0g, 0a, +2, 1 hit and 3sb Daniel was noted with 2g, 1a, +3, 4 PIM (Slashing and Hooking, both penalties were killed off), 3 hits, 5sb and 53.19% win rate at the draw 2-3 (SO) It only took the Wranglers two matches to have the throw of a dice shootout decide a match of theirs in their 2-3 win. Ten seconds into the game the Wolves scored a first time. Team-Pylon Alternate Captain GoodBrandSun tied the game with one second left in the period. The second frame came and went with neither team being able to score. Vancouver went ahead in the third period, only to witness Vladovechsenkchushkin score his first goal in a Wranglers uniform to bring this game to overtime. Same remained without a goal and so the teams had to resort to a shootout to evaluate a winner. Wolanin was the only successful skater and hence the game went to Calgary, despite being outshot again. Dahl (51 saves), Puk (1g/1a) and Marcel (0g/1a) were named the three stars of the night. In a veritable Clash of Titans in the net, Dahl (.962) had the edge over Fuhr (.935). The Wranglers' play on the man advantage could do with some tweaking (0/3) whereas the box play units seem to have find their jive (2/2). Marcel was credited with 0g, 1a, +1, 2 hits and 2sb Daniel achieved 0g, 1a, -1, 3 hits and 53.19FO% 5-2 It was now time to turn the tables on Calgary, as they clearly put more shots on goal than Toronto and still lost 5-2. The Legion opened with a short handed goal in the first period. Calgary could equalize the game early in the second by an even strength goal by center-turned-winger-turned-center Gonçalves. Alas the tie was shortlived, as Toronto scored two goals within ninety seconds. In the final period, Vladovechsenkchushkin pulled a goal back in power play, which was countered five minutes later with two goals within twelve seconds. The three stars went to Ryan (1g/1a), Baker (1g/0a) and Caulfield (1g/1a). Calgary's prospect netminder Pedersen (.828) was thrown into the deep end of the pool and stood no chance against veteran goaler Lindbergh (.960) who stood on their head tonight (and yet was FISTED ANALLY BY A CIRCUS MONKEY by the jury for the three stars). Calgary's powerplay was a disappointment as they were only 1/6 (which is sub-par) and also allowed a goal against, the penalty kill was once more up for the task and kept the sheet clean (3/3). Marcel had 0g, 1a, -3, 2 PIM (Delaying the game, no effect on the score) and 1 hit Daniel was reported with 0g, 0a, -1, 2 PIM (Interference, was killed off), 4 hits, 1sb and 80.00% succes at the hashmarks. 4-3 (SO) Only four games into the season and already the second time the derphorses need to spin the wheel to find a winner. This time it was a loss against perennial contender Seattle. The Bears were on the board first, but Calgary replied with goals by Wolanin and Vladovechsenkchushkin to win the period 2-1. The second frame saw a goal for each team. Daniel wins the faceoff against MacTavish in the Bear's defensive zone. He passes to AirRig, the Defender to Wolanin who relays the disc to sophomore Back Strasmore. He gives the puck to Janser who takes a one timer from Ovi's office, the hashmark and dings it into the net via the crossbar. In the third period, the Bears can tie the score with a power play goal. The sudden death is once more not deserving of its name and the shootout has to decide, with the better end for the Pacific Teddies. Janser (1g/1a), Stone (2g/0a) and Wolanin (1g/1a) were given the post match honours. Dahl (.903) had a good match but was outperformed by Wilson (.919). The Wranglers' power play was anemic (0/3) and the penalty kill had room for improvement (2/3). Marcel left the ice with 0g, 0a, -1 and 4 hits Daniel had 1g, 1a, +2, 4 PIM (Hooking and Holding, the latter lead to a goal against), 8 hits, 1sb and 59.18FO% Calgary is on the fourth seed in the North American Conference at the moment, looking to improve. Here are the Jansers' stats for this season: Marcel: 4gp, 0g, 2a, 2pts, -1, 2 PIM, 8 hits, 5sb Daniel: 4gp, 3g, 3a, 6pts, +3, 10 PIM, 18 hits, 7sb, 0gwg, 0ppg, 0shg, 60.66FO%, 2 First Stars https://vhlforum.com/topic/129435-calgary-wranglers-s86-captains/ https://vhlforum.com/topic/129587-a-tale-of-brothers-wind-of-change-reloaded/ https://vhlforum.com/topic/129578-vsn-presents-s85-vhl-awards/ https://vhlforum.com/topic/129697-a-tale-of-two-brothers-a-night-to-remember/ https://vhlforum.com/topic/129819-a-tale-of-two-brothers-into-the-breach-once-more/ GM 3: Calgary Wranglers vs. Chicago Phoenix (vhlportal.com) GM 9: Calgary Wranglers vs. Vancouver Wolves (vhlportal.com) GM 16: Toronto Legion vs. Calgary Wranglers (vhlportal.com) GM 27: Seattle Bears vs. Calgary Wranglers (vhlportal.com)

  10. Graphic courtesy of Leandrofg (Marcel's stats/Daniel's stats) We had a chance to talk to Daniel once more, after the management has made moves for the coming season. Jean-Luc Lieuxperroux (JLL) conducted the interview. JLL: 'Thanks for agreeing to this interview, Daniel much appreciated.' Daniel Janser (DJ): 'My pleasure, Jean-Luc, fire away.' JLL: 'We of course have to address the elephant in the room, which is the departure of former Captain Saku Kotkakoivu and veteran Defender Erlantz Jokinen. How much does it hurt Calgary's chances to compete if you lose this amount of star power?' DJ: 'Of course we cannot replace them one to one in the free market and stay cap-compliant. Even in the most star studded roster, the loss of two such outstanding players, let alone leaders and locker room presences, will be felt. However, our S83 crop in Gonçalves, Wolanin and GoodBrandSun have grown into their place and will help to compensate for the move of these two amazing players. Justice works on himself and is a solid depth player. We could also replace some of the experience lost with the acquisition of Aberg, Ablar and Vladovechsenkchushkin. We also signed Pedersen who will help out in net.' JLL: 'Is this a sign of suspicion towards Dahl's performance in net?' DJ: 'I would not phrase it that way. Dahl has been solid in net and we have not lost many games because of him. On the other hand, Dahl did also not steal games for us that often, especially in the playoffs. Management felt that he has peaked, and that we need a higher ceiling on the netminder position if we want to compete for the cup. If you look at the past few Continental Cup winners, you see that often they had a star in net. We kind of hedged our bets now. As I see it, either Dahl feels the pressure and proves management wrong or Pedersen will slowly take over the starting position if management with their evaluation was correct.' JLL: 'That is interesting indeed. Do you see the defence weaker now with the absence of long time Wranglers Jokinen?' DJ: 'Again, he is one of the best players in the league on his position, so prima facie one could be forgiven for thinking so. However, I want to throw in that GoodBrandSun is continuosly improving his play and is not for nothing in the leadership group, And Strasmore entered the league early and showed already improvement during his rookie season. Ablar is a seasoned defender who learned how to keep the door shut in an underdog team in London. Marcel is a solid stay at home defender, who does take few penalties and had a very good +/- rating in his rookie campaign. All in all I think the defence is more balanced this coming season than in the past season.' JLL: 'So in conclusion where do you see Calgary in the upcoming season?' DJ: 'I think GM Kris Rice has a habit for 'soft' rebuilds and stay competitive even when changes need to be made. I see us making the playoffs, and once there, everything is possible.' JLL: 'And do you think you will be able to repeat your amazing season?' DJ: 'I hope to be a contributor to Calgary's success and to be consistent. That is all I care about. If that brings individual awards like last season that is nice and all. But the one silverware I really care about is the Cup. It is for too long that the amazing Calgary supporters had to long for this trophy to be in their showcase. JLL: 'Thanks for this interview and good luck.' DJ: 'Thanks for having me and I appreciate your good wishes.' 15. Graphic courtesy of Leandrofg (Marcel's stats/Daniel's stats) Daniel was beyond excited, when he received the coveted invitation to the probably most illustrous events in hockey that is not on ice. The annual VHL Award gala, followed by the HOF induction of the class of S85. It took him seconds to fill in the RSVP and name Bonnie as his +1. The tall Scot was leaning in the door frame of Dan's study and tilted her head. 'What did get you so giddy, luv?' The Wranglers' Captain replied: 'We are invited to the VHL Awards gala in Montréal, honey. We need to dress up though, as the dress code is black tie.' Daniel was anxious, as he perfectly knows that Bonnie is not a fan of formal clothing and prefers a casual look. 'Will you accompany all the same? Pretty please?'. Bonnie was mockingly rolling her eyes and said: 'Fine, I will find a rag I can wear to such an event. What about heels? Is it okay to wear them? I mean, if we must doll up than I can as well go the full Nine Yards.' 'Bonnie, it is nice of you to ask, but you do not need my permission. I am shorter than you and I do not care what others think about that. If you want to go all in, by all means, do it.', her boyfriend replied. 'You know what that means, though.' 'Shopping?' 'Shopping' After a shopping tour that felt to the Rotkreuz native like it lasted for a week, both Bonnie and Daniel had acquired an appropriate outfit with all the bells and whistles. At the night of the gala, the couple met first with other players from the Wranglers, such as Saku (Boulet), AirRig (Funk), Leandro and Landon (both for the Elmebeck), who all were nominated for some silverware. They also had a chat with Nico Pearce (Campbell and Boulet nominee), who is probably Daniel's hardest rival of the S81 draft class, but also gave sound advice in the early days of the Swiss' career. For once, the VHL's top players were assembled without trying to kill each other on a slippery surface with sticks in their hands, razors on their feet and a hard rubber disc to shoot at the others. Of course, the recipients for the purely statistical awards were known and congratulations were exchanged. The awards where a poll was held though were a different matter and the odd bet was placed on the outcome of such election. After having received the Brooks Award for the best goal scorer and the Szatkowski for the highest point total, Daniel was asked to grace the stage a third time when the winner for the Slobodzian (interestingly a Calgary legend) was announced. Said Daniel: 'It certainly is a great honour to be considered the most outstanding player by your peers. I thank everyone in the Wranglers organisation, from GM to the timekeeper who work hard to give us players the chance to be the best players and human beings that we can be. I thank my dad, who always supported me, to pursue my dream to play hockey. Despite being constantly told that I am too small and too lightweight to become a good player, he believed in me. I thank my brother who always had and still has my back. Thanks to the players, be it Wranglers or from opposing teams, who constantly fuel my motivation to improve myself. Thanks go also out to the Brigade GM who first gave me an opportunity to showcase my skill and dedication to hockey and to my GM's in the VHLM who helped me grow to the player I am now. One final word to the hopeful kids out there: Do not get discouraged by someone telling you that you are too small or too light to follow your dreams. Take it as an incentive to work on you. Size does not matter, hard work, talent and dedication do.' Janser with his motherlode of Trophies (photo courtesy of Lean Frog) To absolutely no-one's surprise, Daniel was also elected into the All VHL First Team alongside Pearce and Boulet recipient Kisslinger up front, Valiq and Campbell winner Reinhart as well as Labatte and Wylde-awarded Payne on the blue line and last but not least Booberry, who won the Shaw award, in net After the recently retired Duncan Idaho was inducted into the HOF as the only one of his class, Dan asked for a selfie, as Duncan was and is the type of player the veteran center wanted (and still wants) to be. A 200 foot player with an edge and tons of leadership. Stay tuned for further updates. https://vhlforum.com/topic/128491-a-tale-of-two-brothers-facing-the-season-end/ https://vhlforum.com/topic/128627-a-tale-of-two-brothers-heartbreak-loss/ https://vhlforum.com/topic/128718-a-tale-of-two-brothers-an-interview-with-the-captain/ https://vhlforum.com/topic/129240-a-tale-of-two-brothers-proam-tournament/ https://vhlforum.com/topic/129435-calgary-wranglers-s86-captains/ https://vhlforum.com/topic/129587-a-tale-of-brothers-wind-of-change-reloaded/ https://vhlforum.com/topic/129578-vsn-presents-s85-vhl-awards/
