I like this move but here is my unimportant opinion on the matter:

The Istanbul Red Wolves probably have one of the best logos/branding across all three leagues, sad to see them be one of the teams that go.

I am terrible at writing intros to this kind of thing, so I’m just going to cut to the chase: we are contracting the VHLE back to 6 teams.

As I’m sure a lot of you know, there has been a worrying trend of thin rosters in the VHLE, and the numbers reflect that we have a few too many roster spots for players to cover them. We anticipate that a large bounceback in the form of the sizable S90 class of recreates (when compared to S89 at least) should help breathe some life back into the locker rooms. However, we are also helping it along with contraction. After these changes, on average, we are anticipating just shy of two full lines of active players per team.

The unfortunate teams that will be heading into the ether are the Geneva Rush and the Istanbul Red Wolves. There was never going to be an easy decision here, but between weak branding, short history, and tangential connections to local terrorist groups, these two franchises will not be in the VHLE for S90 and moving forward. I know that not everyone will be happy, but there was no way to do this without pain somewhere along the line.

However, much like the VHL in S58, we had a bit of a mismatch in terms of the rosters that make sense to remove and the franchises that make sense to remove. To that end, we are effectively full swapping roster players, prospects, and draft picks from Istanbul and Geneva to Stockholm and Vasteras, respectively. The current roster players and prospects on Stockholm and Vasteras will be released and available as free agents this off-season. The current draft picks owned by Stockholm and Vasteras will be passed or deleted as required.

Note: compensatory picks will be required in S91 to make this work, we will make sure everyone is made whole. The actual position of these compensatory picks is to be determined.

We were lucky enough to not actually need to fire anyone as GM to make this work! There has been some juggling behind the scenes, but here’s how everything shakes out:
    - JB123 steps down following an absurdly strong run in Oslo
    - Gaming Ringleader shifts over to GM Oslo
    - Z follows his roster to Vasteras and takes over there
    - Masu steps down from Istanbul in the hopes of pursuing other opportunities
    - Twists keeps Stockholm and inherits Istanbul’s roster

That’s all for the actual contraction side of things. If you have any particular comments, questions, or concerns, please reach out to thad or I directly. My DMs are always open.

Moving on to a couple of rule changes.

    INACTIVE FREE AGENTS

Starting this off-season, teams will only be able to add 2 inactive free agents to their roster. This does not apply to players that go inactive mid-season or during their first three years post-draft, it only applies to the players that would have gone through the (now defunct) waivers system.

Since we will only have 12 players to hand out this way each season, we will also be introducing a mini-draft, run on Discord or the forums, to allocate these players in the fairest manner possible. This draft will consist of two rounds, the first of which will be a reverse of the regular season standings while the second snakes that (i.e., equal to the regular season standings). Our current plan for this is to do rolling 12-hour clocks similar to VHFL, but we can adjust that on the fly as required. Teams are obviously allowed to pass on their pick if they do not see value in claiming an inactive free agent.

We’re hoping that reducing the crowd of those high TPA inactive free agents to maximum 2 per team will increase engagement for the players who remain active by freeing up more ice time, and by extension, delivering better stat lines.

We will be monitoring inactive free agents and their necessity over the next few seasons and will hopefully be able to remove them entirely at some point.

    PLAYOFF FORMAT

In our 8-team VHLE as it stands now, 5 teams make the playoffs, with a 4-5 wildcard round before semi-finals.

We don’t feel that a competitive league should have 5 of 6 teams making playoffs, so we are transitioning back to a 4 team playoff, with the matchups simply being 1-4 and 2-3. Both semi-finals and finals will remain best of 7. Tiebreakers remain unchanged. Games will be simmed 1 per day to keep as close as possible to in line with the VHL and VHLM playoff schedule.

TL;DR - Geneva and Istanbul branding deleted. Those rosters move to Stockholm and Vasteras. Current Stockholm and Vasteras rosters released. VHLE moves forward with 6 teams. Some rule changes regarding inactive FAs and playoff format to accommodate the contraction.

S88 Scotty Campbell Trophy (Most Valuable)
S88 Aidan Shaw Trophy (Top Goalie)
    3x All-VHL First Team (S83, S85, S88)

Our first inductee today is the finest goalie of his generation, having his 3 crowning seasons with 3 different teams, proving he was no product of his teams as the VHL came out of the high scoring era into one likely to be dominated by goalies again following in the footsteps of Booberry. Booberry came agonisingly close to a Continental Cup with back-to-back finals losses in his final 2 seasons, but proved to be consistent enough to become just the 2nd goalie Hall of Famer in the 16-team era, securing his name among the league's all time greats.

    2x All-VHL First Team (S87, S88)
    2x All-VHL Second Team (S85, S86)
    One Continental Cup (S84)

Our 2nd inductee is reasonably rare 7-season career, Brendan Marner working his way from a relative unknown on draft day to becoming arguably the face of the 2nd era of the Warsaw Predators, one of the league's dominant forces circa S84-S85. Marner kicked off his career with a 100-point season and fell below that mark just twice in his next 6 seasons, consistently finding himself among the league's top forwards in his prime, peaking as top scorer in S87.

JardyB10 reacted to sportexperts show in Sportexperts show: what sticks are truly worth it
Hello everyone, this is roman Montgomery newly member of the sports expert show and today I will help you pick out what sticks are worth it.

First of all, twigs aren't just made by Bauer or CCM, there's plenty more hockey brands that do them. So when you go to the store don't only look at those twigs because there's a lote more. For me, "True" sticks are great!. Alot of players like Marner,Chabot, glass, Johansson and alot more use them!

True sticks have plenty different sticks that are good. Hzrdus has got to be my favorite. Quick tip on this stick, the 9x is better than the px that is alot more money.

Next up I'll like to talk about how expensive sticks are. It is outrageous that some sticks cost more than 400 bucks! Those are the sticks that all the pros normally use😭( they've got all that cash) recently I went to my hometown hockey shop and I found this new Sherwood rekker that bedard's using. AND DAMMNNN,THAT CRAP FELT GOOD. for my size it was only 165 bucks( I'm really short) and it's almost lighter than the Bauer agent! That is a grab for sure.

Triggers are amazing aswell. The 5-6 are really good even if their old. I have the 6 and man those corners of the net get sniped,it's a perfectly balanced stick. shooting, deking, poke checking and they're really hard to break that means you don't need to buy a new one for a while what ch means you spend less money!

Into the more money ones. Alot of people like the agent but for me, it's WAY to light. I like can't feel it and just isn't the feel I want for my sticks. This is why I love the jetspeeds! The new one just came out and damn that things amazing. They're not to light and are perfect at everything. Even the old ones! What I like the most is that they last so long, they're like hard metal!

To conclude, I think that sticks aren't just too buy because people say they're good, but it's how you like them. The more money doesn't mean they're better, It just means they'll know people will figure they're better because of the price. Test those sticks in the little shooting box and figure out which ones for you!

Peace out! Roman Montgomery from the sportexperts show.

The World Junior Championship is upon us! This go around is no different from seasons past, as both General Managers of the teams and players alike look to prove they have what it takes to be the best of the best of the future in VHL competition. The rosters are set and the teams are ready. Let’s take a look at who’s playing where, and which team might possibly take home Gold at this World Juniors!

    Team Europe:

Starting with the team that did the impossible and won it all last season, we’ve got Team Europe! It seems they’re sticking to what worked last season, leaning on the offense to carry games. Familiar faces like Viktor Jensen @Advantage, BjorkaBjorn BjornaBjorkson @JardyB10, Legacy Gaming @Gaming Ringleader, Steve Lattimer @pugsood, and Admir Bala @Tyler headline the team again, and look to be some of the best players the Tournament has to offer. Additionally, Goaltender Karl Herzlich @LastGoon007 is making his return to the WJC after a completely dominant VHLM season with the Philadelphia Reapers, and looks to win his second consecutive Gold Medal at the Tournament.

The roster is absolutely stacked, and personally I’d say they’re favorites to win the Tournament. That being said though, Team USA was by far the favorite to win last season's World Juniors, and with how they only walked away with a Bronze for their Round Robin showing, favorites mean little in the grand scheme of things. Regardless, I’d expect a big WJC from Team Europe, and a Medal Round appearance minimum.

    Team World:

Moving on, we’ve got last season's Silver Medal winner, Team World! Looking to make another Cinderella story type run, they’re expanding upon what made them so good last season and leaning on their top line and defensive core. Keita Kourou @woog and Pope Francis @nurx are the players to look out for, as they are likely who Team World will rely heavily on to keep them competitive in Medal Round contention. With new depth pieces being added as well, they’ve got a solid shot at making something happen. The big, glaring issue, however, is absolutely the goaltending. Skill wise, their goaltending duo is of the worst in the tournament, and if they goalies can’t keep up with heavy hitter teams in the Round Robin, it’s looking very scary for Team World.

I believe that should the goaltending hold its ground and make games competitive, World has a solid chance at making a serious run at Gold, but they have a long road ahead of them to get to that point. It’s safe to say World has their work cut out for them, but should they rise to the challenge, I see a wonderful underdog story in the making that would be very reminiscent of Team Europe's own Cinderella run and win from last season's World Juniors. This will be a very interesting team to watch, so make sure to keep them in mind once the puck drops tomorrow!

    Team USA:

Next up, we have Team USA! After a strong Round Robin in S88’s World Juniors, they look to improve upon their previous success and make a run at Gold once more! The roster, similarly to ones mentioned previously, has many familiar faces making their return to the red, white and blue. With players like Justin Williams @JCV and Eric Queefson @twists returning, and the additions of Fradin McGryer @Fradin99, Jack Jeckler @Uncommon, and Ben Laas @dustywilson22, this is a much more defensively minded Team USA that looks to shut down competition, and level the playing field against more offensively minded teams like Europe. Matchups between them should be very interesting to watch indeed!

Overall, I believe that Team USA has a very strong chance at making the Medal Round once more, and even competing for a Gold Medal. The question lies in the defense and goaltending however, as if they’re unable to prevent goals from going in at rapid pace, they’ll be eaten alive by the lack of offensive depth to match juggernaut teams like Europe or Canada. Goaltending shouldn’t be an issue, however, as Team USA bolsters one of the better goaltending duos of the Tournament, and aims to lean on them to shut down games. Should Jonny Elgar @Jonny pull this off, watch out for Team USA!

    Team Canada:

Here’s a dark horse candidate for the competition, we have Team Canada! After failing to win a Medal in the S88 World Juniors, Team Canada is coming back with a vengeance, and it’s going to be everyone else’s problem. Canada bolsters arguably the second best roster (at least TPE wise) of the entire Tournament, and on paper, they’re a very, very scary team. 7 of the top 11 players for Canada are forwards, and similarly to Europe, will look to utilize this strength in the Round Robin by exploding on offensive production at every opportunity. Jeff Lewis @nerji  and Montgomery Burns @LastOneUp especially are some of the best forwards playing in the World Juniors, and look to be deciding factors in whether Canada can return to Medal contention in this season's go.

As I said previously, these guys are good, and I honestly expect big things from them. They’ve got the pieces, they’ve got the experience, they’ve got what it takes. Their kryptonite, however, is easily their defense. While they have a strong first pairing, it severely drops off after that, and it’s been proven time and time again that depth is what wins Championships. If the offense can pull through, or the defense pulls a miracle out, I can easily see Canada playing and potentially even winning Gold. Keep an eye out for them!

    Team Asia:

Last but not least, we have Team Asia. A first look at the roster, and it’s rather plain to see. The lack of Asian players hurts the team, as a majority of the team isn’t actually from Asia, but players that the rest of the Tournament didn’t select for their rosters. With a team of misfits, however, draws opportunity. While it’s tough to argue that they’d be a contender for a Medal Round appearance, they have the potential to be upsetters for teams looking to make it there. Shubham Anand @Will3 and Savaisk Tzear @comrade cat are definitely the stars of this roster, and will likely be leaned on heavily to maintain competitiveness against stacked teams who have deep depth. Throw in the misfits and you got yourself a very unique opportunity to be a rather nice comeback story in the making.

Not to mince words, but I can’t see them being a very strong contender for Gold. As mentioned previously however, they’re going to fight hard and heavy for every game, and make the rest of the Tournament sweat. You won’t be able to walk over these guys, that’s for sure, and they’re going to make you earn a win whenever you play them. With that said, however, I’m sure some teams will underestimate them, and they’ll quickly come to learn that no team should be written off when playing on the world stage.

Concluding this VSN coverage of the WJC rosters for S89, I have to say that I’m extremely excited to see what happens in the coming weeks with this tournament. Everyone has a chance at doing something great, and the potential stories to be told are infinite. This is a very exciting time to be a fan of the WJC, so make sure you cheer on your teams as they attempt to win glory on the world's largest prospect stage. This has been Marcus Svedberg, VSN, wishing you all a happy WJC!

Managing this team has been a treat all the way from working with league management on the expansion concept way back at the start of the pandemic to winning a championship in season 76, and all the ups and downs before and since then.

Overall, I think the Chicago Phoenix have been a success. While my activity has been called into question throughout my tenure, some as a bit of an inside joke, others in a more assholeish way, I think many of my longer-term players will agree that I have been dedicated to trying to build a winner here in Chicago, and we have managed to make the playoffs in 12 of our 16 seasons since we came into the league. While it would have been nice to have been able to have brought more than one cup to Chicago the playoffs are a fickle beast and while we have been close, I was never able to secure one with this second core.

Now to thank some specific people.

@solas – my first ever draft pick with Chicago and a career player for the Phoenix. Camus was a legend and you are among my favourite members here
@fishy – while our time together got off to a rocky start when I drafted Matty Socks without scouting, I think it ended up being a fun adventure with that first core
@Blazzer – my first AGM and another career long Chicago Phoenix player – I know you hated how Lee Xin played but I hope our conversations in the locker room and early morning gen chat made your early time in the league enjoyable
@Quik – Thanks for trusting me with Christian Mingle and sticking out your career in Chicago – glad we could get a cup out of it – hope all is well
@MubbleFubbles – Thank you for spending as long as you did in Chicago. Our chats on player builds and roster construction were always very enjoyable and I wish you all the best with this player and any in the future
@Shindigs – I hope everything is good with you – we talked a ton while you were here and I am sad we could not win a cup together, but I learned a lot from you on new builds with the hybrid attributes. Hope to see you around again soon!
@fromtheinside – So glad you chose to spend your career in Chicago with Sundin. Once again sad we couldn’t win a cup together but I hope I provided you with a fun place to play out your career
@Subject056 - I know you are a fairly new member of the Phoenix and we haven't talked a ton but whichever member gets to take over as a general manager for the Phoenix has a great member and player to build around as their cornerstone. I hope you can carry Chicago back to glory in the near future!

To the plethora of other players who have played in the red and orange since our inception I would like to thank each and every one of you for your time here, whether you got here through trade, free agency, the draft or other means. I hope I gave you a locker room and team where you could have fun while I tried to build a winning team with a good enviroment.

Outside of that I would like to thank all the other general managers who put up with me in my role. I have issues responding to DMs, as has been brought up a few times, but that was never anything personal. That issue extends to my personal and work life as well and is something I am trying to work on. I truly did enjoy talking to most of you and you made the role a fun one to work in.

I hope to stick around the VHL in some capacity as I have been here on and off since its creation sixteen seasons ago but it is time for me to hand the reins over to someone who can dedicate the time needed to build Chicago back into a championship caliber team.

Not sure, but I’d guess an inactive signing who got around. As far as notable players, Leeroy Jenkins got around.

I’m not sure, one would have to check the play by plays to know, and that doesn’t happen frequently as far as I know.

I’m gonna say no, but probably a relatively inactive has.

The BOG does not have any secret rituals.

Simon Tremblay is the developer of the Simon T Hockey Simulator, also known as STHS, which is the software the VHL utilizes to simulate hockey games for the enjoyment of our community.

Simon himself is kind of a dick, and largely unhelpful.

I don’t know about S1-14, because I’m not old enough interestingly enough. The seasons when the league was a forum league and not a PORTAL or DISCORD league were the best damn years of our life, lemme tell ya 👴🏻.

But in all reality it was similar to how it is now, but with more late 00s, early 10s ugly internet culture, a smaller (but arguably tighter) community, probably more forum activity (or maybe it just felt like it since that’s when I was most active).

It’s truly unfortunate we lost so many old indexes. Indices. I was able to supply a chunk of them, but my original simming laptop completely died during my tenure. Fortunately this happened around the same time I was out of town for work and had sterling stepping in for me. Otherwise the league would have been in a lot of trouble, because before that point, I wasn’t backing up the league file everyday, and it was only that incident that made me realize we needed to backup the league file everyday. So between computers dying and losing 2-3 host sites, we sadly would have lost a bunch of those original indices.

I originally thought I’d do podcasts for shits and giggles, but turns out it was easier to be inactive 😅. I’ll produce something eventually probably!

Appreciate the shoutout but appreciate you as a person even more! ❤️

I’m high and I have VHL questions

    1. Which player played on the most teams throughout their VHL career?

    2. Has anyone ever scored a goal on their own net?

    3. Has there ever been a VHL team to win a cup with a bot goalie starting?

    4. What season would be considered the peak rise of VHL? I think it was Covid times but not exactly sure when.

    5. Do the Blues and BOG have secret rituals they do behind closed doors? Like do y’all light candles, sit in a circle and call on the VHL spirits? Is there a VHL god? I would think it would be @JardyB10 if anyone.

    6. How many individual people have had a player in the VHL? 1000? 10,000?

    7. Who is Simon?

    8. What was S1 like? What was S10 like? What were all of the seasons like when this league was a forum league and the portal wasn’t even a thing? There’s a lot of indexes missing from early seasons on the portal because they just didn’t exist
