     BONUS
    Spirit Bear Award -
    Randy Bobandy

The Spirit Bear award is chosen each off-season by the GM of the Bears. There could be a lot of reasons why a member might be chosen and each season an explanation will/might be given. It's a thank you. It's an appreciation of what you've done for Seattle or maybe through that the VHL. You're deserving! Maybe you've overcome something crazy in life or have kicked it up an extra notch in the VHL TPE earning department. It's a good award for good things that are good. So, what's the catch?

The winner picks a charity of their choosing (I'd like to know why IF you're comfortable with sharing) and I will donate $10! I know it isn't much, but it's something.. and I mean, think of if I would have started this in Season 49.

Randy Bobandy, also known by their member name as @AJW, is an absolute gem to me. He was never really part of the S67 dynasty Bears which drew a good group of us lads like Berocka, Dok, IR, Rayz, Frosty, oilmandan, etc together - but over time, with his last player and this player, he's become a VHL brother to me. He's helped huge with the team, is incredibly loyal and is always promoting activity and positive vibes in the locker room. All while tackling school and going crazy with football! The guy is awesome and is a perfect example of a Seattle Bear! Unfortunately their time with the Bears was cut short this season, but their accomplishments and efforts will never be forgotten by myself and despite them being gone, they will always be a Bear and more importantly, a VHL brother! I asked AJ, "What's a charity fund/organization that you would donate to if you could right now? and why?" over snapchat and they mentioned that they don't have any specifics and would like to help out some homeless foundation/community. Last season we went with Boyle Street in Edmonton after Tavish DeGroot (Rory)  took home the first ever Spirit Bear Award! With a quick Google search, I find that Los Angeles has the highest homeless population, along with California leading the way. With that being said, I went ahead and made a $10.40 (to help cover fees) towards the Los Angeles Mission Homeless Shelter. Thank you @AJW for everything you've done for Seattle, myself and the VHL. Though... you did leave me on read

    An Apology

Hello everyone, as you may know by now I have returned from being IA. If you haven't caught it in Discord, I went IA due to the absolutely insane pressure/time commitment work had put on me. I was working 11 hour days as a software engineer and by the time I was done, all I wanted to do was turn off my brain and try to get some semblance of relaxation. Unfortunately, my hours recently have only partially improved. I do not have it in me to do PTs anymore, and probably won't for the foreseeable future.

All that being said, I owe some people apologies. I went completely awol and had multiple people reaching out to me. It sounds stupid, but I was so exhausted that the thought of explaining what I was going through was too much for me. By the time I worked up the energy to explain it, it had been days/weeks since I had received messages, and I felt too guilty to respond. I'd like to apologize to both @Enorama, @thadthrasher, and @Doomsday for abandoning my team in the E. I really tried to make it work, and I know I put you guys in a terrible situation. I'd also like to extend my sincerest apologies to @FrostBeard. Of all times for me to come back, this seemed like the cruelest. I had absolutely no idea I had been traded to Moscow, I had just seen a lot of @Spartan tagging people for what seemed like sims, so I thought I'd make a joke. He then reached out and told me what had happened. I told him I'd at least try to be a clicker. Realistically, I can probably be depended on to click, do trivia, and do pressers. This literally might be the only VHL.com article I write who knows.

I probably owe more apologies to you all then just those three, but I felt that I needed to say something. You have all been really supportive of my return and that means a lot to me.

Love you guys and this community ❤️

After announcing he would hit free agency, The Frenchman has not only left Riga, but also left Calgary after a brief visit. Both teams did not fancy their chances enough of him signing there in free agency and tried to get a pick in return (or recoup the pick they traded for the player). It might have come to a surprise of these in the Wranglers locker room, as they truly welcomed me in a warm way, which you would immediately make someone feel at home. But the locker room there is somehow obsessed with Leandro for reasons unknown. And once I was traded there, I had no intentions to join the locker room as I was planning on hitting free agency, so I asked Ricer first if he wanted me in at all if I would test FA regardless. But he did and welcomed me in, but the thought of teams that I have not won a cup with being preferred destinations in free agency, was one he thought he would not overcome and traded me, I wasn't sure if he was realizing he would not be able to sign me then as he did mention still being interested if i did make it to FA. So for the next part of my scenario both Riga and Calgary are out of the question, needless to say, I won cups there before, in Riga with Maximoff, and in Calgary with Quill. As they also have alumni roles, i’m still part of that locker room once they found out i was once a wrangler too (even though it was for 1 season only, but at least 1 with a cup).

So after I was put on the block again, it was DC who would snag my rights for a second, with me joking who would be the third team that day. But Frostbeard was not willing to trade it further as he really intends to sign me. I played for DC before, 1 season with Idaho and I did not win a cup there. And last season I even joined up as AGM for Frostbeard as a joke, as my application was basically saying I wouldn’t do anything but call him out on dumb moves he made. Well thats a promise i did fulfill, I did literally no work as AGM there and am now in a situation where they traded for my free agency rights.

I’m not gonna lie to other teams as I think it would be a waste of their time as well to put in a pitch for me, and I rather not disappoint other players (as pointed out by beketov when he tried to convince me to stay at DC), so currently I think I am just going to press that button and become a DC Dragon for the next seasons. I did not plan on doing a sign and trade as I wanted to keep my options open, but DC definitely fit my desire to join a team on the rise. Before last season started I actually called out Frostbeard that they would do worse as Riga, well, he did get his players to perform in a way that we werent able in Riga, so hopefully he can make The Frenchman great again.

My very first recruitment graphic and one of the very first graphics I ever made. I remember being really into putting color gradients over pictures of cities at the time, and I also remember that the text looks the way it does because I pressed random things until it got that way. I then proceeded to ask what I did, so I could hopefully do it again, and learned that this isn't the greatest graphic in the world and that no one else had any idea either.

Way back in S66, the VHLM expanded--again. I was part of the league's (at the time) historic S66 draft class, which was already given a good amount of room to work with by the addition of Houston and Philadelphia in S65. Heck, I was even part of the very first Houston team, even though that's not something I'll get into here. In S66, the league brought in Mississauga, Mexico City, and San Diego. And it was here that I would get hired, after just one season in the league, to my very first GM job...the very first GM of the Mississauga Hounds.

For the next 4-plus seasons, the team would be mine. I grabbed an old Houston teammate of mine in @Radcow as my first AGM, and off we went--the S66 Hounds team alone would feature names like @DoktorFunk, @Rayzor_7, @Hogan, and of course, current Wild GM (and longtime AGM of mine) @Berocka as first-gens. And that's not even mentioning Scottish legend (and VHLM points leader) Callum MacElroy and eventual AGM-of-a-couple-teams Cody Smith. From the very first season, the Hounds were a very special place.

Other first-gens who originally called Mississauga home in my time and built one or more solid careers upon it include @Telkster, @Cxsquared, @Patrik Tallinder, and 4th-round pick @Ricer13 (whose draft slot I initially traded into targeting someone else I didn't realize had been picked. Although, good riddance--I don't even remember who that was because they went IA immediately, and we got Ricer!). And, of course, I have to give an honorary mention to @DarkSpyro, whose career began as a waiver signing in Ottawa but whose activity we watched explode with the Hounds. We'd all come together to create something that was beyond a team and was even almost a community in itself. Our locker room was talked about around the entire league, and that isn't just my own GM bias. Do you know how hard that is to achieve, especially when you're just a VHLM team and no one is supposed to care about you? We did that.

Together, we would build up a team that made the playoffs in its very first season, took a step back, and made two very serious runs at the championship in S68 and S69. In fact, we'd make the finals in S69, but lose to a borderline unstoppable Saskatoon team. In a season where I'd banked more mid-late picks than anyone else (a range where I'd typically excelled in drafts previous because I'd scout the absolute heck out of them), it was just our luck that there wasn't a single active to be found outside the first round and a half. Sometimes I wonder what may have changed with a draft class that looked more like the ones before it, but at the end of the day...I can be proud that we made the very first finals appearance in franchise history.

But anyway, hello everyone. Perhaps you're wondering why I'm pinging you--this certainly isn't the very first time I've reflected on my time as GM, and it's been almost four real-life years since I ran the Hounds. But since there's a general lack of VHLM awareness, I thought I'd let you (and maybe a lot of others) know...

...that for the very first time in franchise history, the Mississauga Hounds are Founder's Cup Champions.

You got that right. It took over 4 years to get there, it took a long list of GM changes, and it took a whole lot of hard work through countless rule changes and VHLM stuff, but at long last, the GM who can claim the title is none other than @vincentlg2007, in his very first team management gig. The team is still fighting through it all, wins are still being chased, and in what I can tell you is nothing short of an administrative miracle, the exact same server that I created as a college freshman is still up and running.

And isn't it nice to look over the list of Hounds past and imagine what the future might hold for the franchise? Heck, this team just did what I couldn't, even with the names I had. And while I'm generally obligated to be impartial and spent most of the season neither knowing nor caring how the Hounds were doing, seeing the outcome of the Cup still gave me a sense of pride. It's not my team anymore, but it was my very first as a GM and I'll never forget the time I spent there, much like I hope you won't forget the best of your early-VHL experiences.

    Until next week!

Since we last reported from our intrepid hockey player, the Saskatoon were eliminated from the playoffs by the later Founder's Cup winner, the Mississauga Hounds. Janser is at this moment playing for the Yukon Rush in the JST. Unfortunately, it appears that his team have not found the ideal line compositions as they are clearly the weakest performing team so far with a 4-8-0 record and a goal difference of 33-44. While this seems not to be a good calling card for the Swiss defender, the Rush have allowed the second least goals. The problem is situated at the other side of the ice, where so far Yukon shows not much efficiency or luck to find the back of the net.

Our correspondent Jean-Luc Lieuxperroux had a chat with Callum on his future, please find a transcript as follows:

JLL: 'Hi Callum. The Wild were eliminated by a dominant Mississauga outfit. Do you care to share your view on it?'
CGY: 'Hi Jean-Luc. Well, with the exception of the first match where Mississauga just steam rolled us, we were in striking distance. Unfortunately, the loss of two key players shortly before the playoffs, stretched us thin and left us with empty tanks. This does not take away from the Hounds' dominance throughout the season and that they could muster an excellent squad and always found a way to score. Congratulations to their first and well deserved Founder's Cup.'
JLL: 'Now you play with the Rush in the JST and are in a similar situation, where your team just seems not to be able to score. Do you want to elaborate on this?'
CGY: 'Gladly. We are a motley crew to start with and have not found the chemistry one needs when playing hockey. The other teams did better in that department, but I am confident, that we will adjust in time to sneak into the playoffs still. An other reason is my limited offensive talent, as I seem to be the common factor for the lack of production with Saskatoon and Rush (he grins).'
JLL (laughs): 'Okay let's change the topic then. You are a very physical player. Recently there has been a demand for more fights in hockey and a complaint of a shortage of enforcers in the VHL. What is your take on that?'
CGY: 'Well, my dad was a power forward and he had eight fights in his rookie season, second only to Owen Taylor, who dropped the gloves a dozen of times. Still unforgotten is the legendary line brawl he had alongside my uncle Marcel in the S87 conference final against the Bears, when both floored their opposite numbers. So I think these type of players still exist. The thing is only that talent is rare and brawn is not. It is wiser for gifted players to not risk a broken paw for a scrap. Also I see fights in hockey as vigilante policing. It is meant to draw a line in the sand (or rather ice) and challenge a player who has overstepped a boundary to a round of fisticuffs. In my admittedly still limited experience, it does not matter who wins the fight and normally players do not fight with the intention to injure their opponent. Hurting? Yeah, for sure. But we all know that a lot of things can go wrong when we play the game within the rules. We do not need to add risks on top of the already existing ones. As an example, I know of at least two players in the Swiss professional leagues who go paralyzed after hitting the board following a clean check. What I am trying to say is that there is still a place for enforcers, but less than in the olden days. Part of the reason for that gradual disappearance is in my opinion that the refs are more professional now and big emphasis is put on players safety. This kind of reduces the need for enforcers, who hand out justice if the officials fail to do so. I think that fights are part of hockey and they certainly are entertaining for the crowd. But it should never be a fight for the sake of a fight itself. It needs to be a meaningful statement 'This far and no further' or something along these lines.'
JLL: 'Certainly a point of view to be considered. Now, are you excited for the oncoming drafts and is there a favourite organisation you would like to play for?'
CGY: 'There has been talks with some organisations and so far I liked them all. The GM's in question know what they can expect of me and vice versa. Of course with Calgary having a rebuild team and the family history, it certainly is no secret that the Wranglers are in the pool as well. By no means do I exclude other franchises though, as long as they show sincere interest and invite me for an interview.'
JLL: 'With the defensive prowess and maturity you already displayed, are you going to skip the one season in Europe?'
CGY: 'Absolutely not. I started late with hockey as you know and would be interesting to see the difference between European hockey and North American hockey. Also, I think I have a lot to learn still, before I can contribute in a meaningful manner to a VHL team's success.'
JLL: 'We just learned that the S90 ProAm tournament has been cancelled. What is your opinion to that unexpected decision?'
CGY: 'Well, I think it is a pity, as it is a good event to connect with other hockey players from different eras. Some of them have hardly launched their careers, others have retired years ago, but still cannot exist without at least semi-competitive hockey in their lives. I can see the reason though, as there is so much going on at the moment with the JST, the WJC, the World Cup and last but not least the draft (and all trading activities surrounding same). There is probably a hockey saturation at this point in time, so I get it. Even though I really looked forward to it.'
JLL: 'Thanks for your time, Callum.'
    CGY: 'Thanks for having me.'

Hello fans, haters and those bored enough to read this letter on Twitter,

I have opened my notes app today (Please check the link in my bio to get an exclusive deal on a new Iphone 23XL Super Pro Limited VHL Edition 4.8TB, while supplies last, please contact your local Apple Orchard for more details) to tell you all about my plans for the coming season. Fear not (or perhaps fear, if you’re into that), I will not be retiring this offseason. I will be coming back for more, and stronger than ever next season. I have been fighting some nagging injuries over the last few seasons, and thanks to the hard work of the folks in the London United organization, I have had an extra long offseason to heal, rejuvenate and train my body to grow even beyond my previous 99 point heights.

But, I know that this is the beginning of the end. The deals I have struck with Simon are coming to a close, and after one more demon-infused season, I will be forced to return my soul, which is owed to Lord Simon himself, with imminence. I am afraid that I will soon be no more than a husk of meat and bones. This is the cost of becoming a VHL player, and each player must weigh the value of their soul accordingly. Some get the good end of the deal. They work hard and get just enough attention from their patron to make it to the Hall of Fame, where they are allowed to live alongside their soul and one loved one in the glory of their success and Simon’s goodwill forever. Everyone else must forfeit their soul to the dark overlord and return to the world, a mindless prophet, seeking new and impressionable children to indoctrinate into their blood cult.

I can feel my mind tugging me towards a young child. Please keep this in context, I promise I’m not weird, I’m just in a cult. I cannot find them, as if they were in the Latvian 3rd tier league or something. They are completely shrouded in ice dust, and play in a flurry of incomprehensible motion. At the conclusion of S91, my time is up and I must venture forth into the world to find my charge. It will likely take me a few weeks to find and induct them, but soon there will be another loyal servant among us (sus?).

I have narrowed down my search a small amount, as I imagine that I am looking for a defender. But something tells me that this isn’t just one defender, but perhaps 2. Or maybe just one particularly large one. I can’t really tell. I feel as though I will need the help of a trusty feline companion to fully uncover this mystery. If anyone knows of a particularly talented hockey cat that I can align my goals with, please contact me in my Instagram DMs, or Saturdays  on Snapchat from 1:00 am to 1:37 am, excluding 1:11 to 1:23 am as that is my designated levitation and sleep paralysis time.

    Love,

    Landon Wolanin
