  6. Goaltenders set the stage for S45 VHL Entry Draft Filed under: VHL Entry Draft The S45 VHL Entry Draft is shaping up to be one for the ages, that is if you're looking for a goaltender. While Phil Hamilton headlines a solid crop of draft-eligible defensemen, a lack of offensive talent is mitigated by a plethora of netminders who are poised to make their mark on the draft's first round. According to this writers very limited research, this could be the first draft in league history where four goaltenders are selected in round one of the draft. Sure, several VHL teams are in absolute desperate need for a long-term building block in net, but make no mistake that this draft has some serious talent in the crease. Leading the way is Yukon goalie Greg Clegane, a surefire pick by the Helsinki Titans, who possess both of the top picks in the draft. Beyond Clegane, things start to get a little murkier. Ariel Weinstein is the next on the big board but could have several landing spots depending on how the draft shakes out. Sandro Clegane, the less talented of the brother duo, is also pegged as a first round pick, although some scouts have expressed concerns over his propensity to slack off in practice. And let's not forget about Ryan Price, the Chicago native who has been quietly working his way up the chart over recent weeks. While it might be a stretch to include him in round 1, don't be surprised if he too makes it a quartet of goaltenders off the board before pick 11.
  7. EUROPE!
  8. Hamilton anoints himself as number one pick VHL.com | Filed under: S45 VHL Entry Draft Prospective number one pick Phil Hamilton is making waves this week after it was reported that the Yukon defenseman has boldly anointed himself as the number one pick in the upcoming S45 VHL Entry Draft. Never short on confidence, the English defenseman dominated the VHLM this season to the tune of 20 goals and 90 points, this of course taking into account that Hamilton is a defenseman. Regarded as one of the top defensive prospects in league history, Hamilton appears to have no shortage of confidence if the reports are in fact true. One scout has cautioned the Englishman against such a bold statement, however. "Last time I checked, Helsinki has picks 1-3. This kid needs to shut his mouth because he's going to find his way to Finland regardless of whether its first, second, or third," the scout said. "This isn't the type of story I like to hear. It speaks to a real lack of character." * This report has been entirely fabricated and despite being a terrible player on the ice, Phil remains a genuinely good guy off the ice.
  9. I wasn't going to vote for Phil. But I mean how can you not vote for Phil?!
  10. Deschamps going to Russia?
  11. Deschamps considering KHL VHLM.com | Filed under: Brampton Blades BRAMPTON, ONT. -- It appears that Maxime Deschamps' stay in the VHLM could be a short one as the French national is purported to be interested in making a transfer back to Europe to play in the KHL. The 18-year-old centre is eligible for the upcoming S45 VHL Entry Draft and is currently projected to be a mid second round pick after spending most of the past season with the VHLM's Brampton Blades. Regarded as a defensive centre, Deschamps tallied a respectable 36 points in 46 regular season contests with the Blades before tying for the team lead in points with five in the team's first round loss to the Yukon. While Deschamps may be showing interest in the KHL, VHL teams have little to be concerned about right now as sources say no organization in the league has any interest in Deschamps at this time. In the case of Deschamps, the message from Russia comes without love.
  12. Deschamps is a LR cancer, tbh.
  13. Deschamps quietly works his way up draft boards VHLM.com | Filed under: Brampton Blades BRAMPTON, ONT. -- In the sixth edition of the VHLSC rankings for the S45 Entry Draft, Frenchman Maxime Deschamps has worked his way up to #18 on the prospect big board. The latest ranking represents a positive move of seven spots since Deschamps originally cracked the rankings two weeks ago. With a rather paltry 27 points in 40 games as the top-line centre of the Brampton Blades, it would seem that the rise is counter-intuitive, but scouts have been drawn to Deschamps for other areas of play. "He's never going to be an offensive guy at the next level, so I don't think anyone is being fooled there," one anonymous VHL head scout said. "Frankly, he isn't even going to be a big-time scorer at the VHLM level, but that doesn't mean there's nothing to like with this kid." It's not exactly a glowing endorsement, but the scout alluded to what has drawn interest, his overall play. Deschamps could be one of the better defensive-minded forwards the VHL Entry Draft has seen in recent years, and it could help pave the way for the 18-year-old to cash in as a serviceable VHL player for several seasons to come. Where does he slot in come draft day, though? Well, that's anyone's guess. Our scouting source said that organizations are doing everything they can to get a read on the answer to that very question. Deschamps is regarded as an excellent centre and should see no shortage of important face-offs in his VHL career. "It's really tough to say where he's going to land come draft day. It's no secret that this draft is very lean on forwards, so that's definitely going to work in his favour. There's a few teams that will be looking for help up front as we get into the latter stages of the first round and early in the second, so is that realistic for him? It could very well be." The prospect of a player with Deschamps' skill-set going as high as the first round might send a shock through some fan-bases, but it's the type of pressure the Amiens product relishes. "Honestly, I'm looking forward to the challenge wherever I go. I've played my whole career to this point knowing I'm never going to be the guy who's going to go out and light up the score sheet. I think I can hold my own offensively, but make no mistake, I know what my role is going to be," Deschamps said. That role could be valuable one as teams look to secure a quality second or third line centre who can find a role as a premier shut-down centre on the big stage. In addition to being an excellent face-off man, Deschamps is also a very strong skater and should see no issues transitioning to the next level. With just under 50 practice hours to his name thus far, it might be a little unrealistic for Deschamps to see any VHL action in S45, but with his commitment to playing a defensive role, it might be safe to say that he could safely hold his own if his team decides to press him into action earlier than some might anticipate.
  14. VHL meets the EASHL Having just read Mr. Power's topical piece on the notion of player builds, could the VHL have success grandfathering in a new system that focuses on a player build ala the EASHL, or EA Sports Hockey League for those who aren't familiar with the series' be-a-pro feature. How does it work? Depending on the player type you select, your ability to update attributes is scaled accordingly. So if for instance you decide to be an Enforcer, anytime you feel like updating wrist shot power it'll cost you more than it would if you were a sniper. Now, bringing this back to the VHL, obviously the league is hitting a point where any player build someone might aim for is eventually mitigated by the fact that your TPE will allow you to max out attributes you originally never intended on getting anywhere close to that point. Currently the league's update scale operates as such: 40 -> 70 ---- 1 TPE per point 71 -> 80 ---- 2 TPE per point 81 -> 90 ---- 3 TPE per point 91 -> 99 ---- 4 TPE per point How would a revised system look? Well, there's no doubt it would take work. Perhaps you might even need to get to a point where you reward 'niche' build over common ones like snipers and play-makers. Taking my player, Maxime Deschamps, into this example; imagine something along the lines of this: Defensive Forward Skating, Face Offs, Defense, Leadership 40 -> 70 (1 TPE per point); 71 -> 80 (1.5 TPE per point); 81 -> 90 (2 TPE per point); 91 -> 99 (3 TPE per point) Checking, Fighting, Discipline, Strength, Penalty Shot 40 -> 70 (1 TPE per point); 71 -> 80 (2 TPE per point); 81 -> 90 (3 TPE per point); 91 -> 99 (4 TPE per point) Scoring, Passing, Puck Handling 40 -> 70 (2 TPE per point); 71 -> 80 (3 TPE per point); 81 -> 90 (4 TPE per point); 91 -> 99 (5 TPE per point) Again, a very rough outlook. But an interesting concept, nonetheless?
  15. It's an interesting concept, for sure. The only issue is that I think a lot of players would end up gravitating towards an offensive build, which could mitigate its success. But having a system where you choose a player type with the attribute scale differing according to build (eg. offensive attributes at a certain point would cost more for a defensive player build) could be a really interesting notion.
  16. I made a room for the VHL! password is vhlhockey
  17. We should get a game going soon. They have upgraded to HTML5, making it compatible with the modern internetz. Overall, a great way to waste time. http://hockey.tk/html5/
