Intro

Malmo’s 6-3 start has shaken up the EU conference, with many teams overachieving, and also underachieving. Teams like Riga have left fans confused and almost shocked. With a solid goalie tandem and a great group of forwards on Riga, there only real question mark was defense. I don’t think this really warrants the start they have of 1-5-2. While Riga could continue to pick high and essentially constantly be solidifying the future, for whenever that future may start, it’s almost the opposite scenario in Malmo. If they get to another year of playoffs and no lottery picks, will that give Malmo high enough picks in the next couple of years to win a cup down the road? In short, yes I think they still can.

Player Stats

Malmo have been popping off in the goals department. At one point this week, Malmo had 4 players in the top 10 for point totals. Muffbeav, Telker, and Dayne each have 15, 14, and 13 points respectively each in 9 games. If this pace continued, there could surely be no doubt that playoffs would be in sight for this young team. The question becomes if they can now. Captain Druss is already set to crush his rookie season scoring of 17 points in 72 games. Look out, cause with all the hits he’s been racking up, Deathwalker already has 7 points in 9 games this year. Walkers is on current pace for a near 50 point season, which would be a big leap up from his first 2 seasons of around 25 points. Sterk is off to a slower start of 4 points in 9 games, but this could be due to the Muffbeav pickup, as not everyone can be at a ppg. Marsh and Kamenov have combined for 21 points in 18 games combined, a great start for the presumed #1 and #2 defensemen on the team, not in any particular order. Wu and Wakaro are both off to pretty typical starts, but both have the potential to beat their season personal bests. Rookie D man Sova is off to a great start for a player that young with 4 points through his first 9 games. Goaler Tretiak is off to a beastly start of 6-2, with a .939 SV% and a 2.58 GAA. The backup McPine has played just one game and lost, but he did post a .936 SV% that game.

Off-season + S79 Predictions

This off-season could be the major shift into a gunning for the playoffs for real, instead of somehow sneaking in with one of the worst on paper rosters. I think this will be dependant on if Malmo moves draft picks for players or not. I think one move for a center, and another for a D man could make us a legit threat in the league next season. I still believe in building for the future and not moving all of next years picks. But with 3 1sts this year, all it would take is another Muffbeav type of trade, and maybe a nice FA signing, and we could be talked about very soon as one of the top teams in the league!
