VHLM Career

 

 

AJ Axelsen joined the Halifax 21st of the Victory Hockey League Minors just one week ago to play as a third line winger. While he didn't actually get onto the ice in his first two "games" for the 21st, he's gone on to play 89 minutes in his first eight games and, while he has yet to score a goal or provide an assist in a Halifax jersey, a rough start was to be expected given that his opposition and teammates have had much more practice than Axelsen to this point of his career. A good sign for Axelsen early is that the vast majority of his shots are at least forcing a save from the goalie, he hasn't had too many shots miss the net. Surprisingly given his intended playstyle, he's been shooting himself just as much as he's been attempting to find a teammate. He has picked up 6 penalty minutes, but that should not need to be addressed, the VHLM is known as a league where even the least physical players get involved in the rougher side of the game. 

 

Player Build

 

 

When Axelsen sent me his form for his player to be submitted for a Rookie Profile, he said that he would consider Axelsen a playmaker. While he is certainly leaning in that direction with passing being one of his primary attribute, for him to move more towards that intended goal he probably will want to generate a greater gap between passing and scoring as, right now, he's shooting just as much as he's attempting to pass. 

 

Main Areas for Improvement: Passing/Defense

 

For the reason stated above, it would be a good idea for Axelsen to consider creating a greater gap between passing and scoring if he'd like Axelsen to play more like a playmaker. He should also make sure to not totally neglect defense, as this attribute effects how quik a player responds to the loose puck. 

 

Consider Leaving: Strength

 

While strength is useful down the line, it's an attribute that affects how likely a player is to get successfully hit which is usually not as big a problem in the VHLM as it is in the VHL. Better to focus on the technical points of his game during the early points of his career rather than the physical ones. 

 

TPE Earning

 

 

So far, Axelsen has made a smart purchase in the player store to get his 5 uncapped TPE for being a first-generation player and seems to have an understanding of where he can earn capped TPE. If he wants to continue to do welfare for 4 TPE as opposed to the 6 TPE Graphic/Media/Podcasts, he can reach the 10 TPE cap by participating in these potential activites (underlined headers are links):

Press Conferences

 

Axelsen actually submitted for a Press Conference this week, but he potentially could have earned more TPE by answering all six questions provided, which would have given him 2 TPE

 

Trivia

 

Every week except during the off-season, the trivia master Victor (although for the next couple of weeks it will be Beketov) ask two VHL-related trivia questions and, if you get them right, you will be rewarded with 2 TPE at the end of the week. Since some of these questions (especially historical) can be difficult for newer members, it would be worth consulting with your VHLM GM/AGM as to how to find the correct answers to them.

 

There's also uncapped one-time only TPE tasks that are useful to submit as early as possible to give your player an early boost.

 

Rookie Profile

 

Submit a 500 word article mainly covering your pros and cons as a hockey player for 8 TPE.

 

Biography

 

Submit a 1000 word article covering your players life, how he got into hockey and his hockey career to date for 10 TPE.

 

Draft Prospects

 

Given that Axelsen has only been in the league for around a week, it is difficult to get a proper gauge on where he will end up going in the VHL Draft. If he keeps earning the same amount of TPE that he earned last week, I can see him being selected in the sixth or seventh round. However, should he start earning more weekly TPE with the advice that I've given above, I think it's possible that he could squeeze into the fifth round.

VHLM Career

 

 

Created a week after the VHLM Draft took place, Smith signed a one year contract to play with the Halifax 21st upon declaring his intent to join the VHLM. He had predominantly featured as a third line winger for the 21st whilst also being a part of the second line of the powerplay unit, however a recent change has seen him receive a more prominent role on the team at even strength (playing on the 2nd line) but he's now been removed from the powerplay unit altogether. As a result, the player was averaging 17 minutes per game has only played 16 total minutes in the first two games since the change. Playing alongside highly rated prospects Jet Jaguar and Dmitri Volosenkov may have an adverse effect on Smith's future contribution to the 21st as typically (especially in the VHLM) the higher skilled players will play around teammates with less TPE rather than with them. This is evidenced by his name being mentioned 26 times in the Play-by-Play of his last game as a third line winger as opposed to the seven times he was mentioned in the Play-by-Play of his last two games combined. 

 

Smith is perhaps a little unfortunate to have only three goals to his name (2 at even strength) as he's fired more than enough shots at goal given his limited ice time, it's just goalies are finding a way to save his shots right now and as a result, he only has a 4.2% shooting percentage, surprisingly low given shooting is arguably Smith's greatest strength. The area where Smith has had his best production is his checking, as Volosenkov is the only forward on the 21st to have recorded more hits than Smith to this point. 

 

Player Build

 

 

Smith regards himself as a power forward and, for a VHLM player, he certainly seems to be leaning in the right direction with his build. He doesn't have much TPE invested in checking, but the VHLM is a less physical league than the VHL so adding any TPE into it can get a player the desired results (see his hit tallies thus far). It's also good to see he's invested quite a bit into defense which will help him pick up the loose puck more often. Probably the main area of his game that needs improving before making the pro league is his skating. Power Forwards typically are able to keep hold of the puck put Smith's low skating (only Austen Fourier has lower skating among forwards in the VHLM) currently makes him an easy target for physical defensemen to nail with a big hit. 

 

Main Area for Improvement: Skating

 

As mentioned above, Skating is important for helping a skater maintain possession of the puck. Typically, players will get this to at least 70 prior to hitting the pros.

 

Consider Leaving: Checking

 

If his new place on the second line is going to last the remainder of the season, he's likely going to see his hit totals fall as his line-mate Volosenkov has more Checking right now (60) as opposed to when he was on the third line where the only line-mate who had added to checking (Nacho) was still below Smith (42). Obviously it depends on what approach Smith wants to take with his development, but it may be better to take this opportunity where he knows his hits will drop to improve his offensive attributes rather than challenging Volosenkov for more hits.

 

TPE Earning

 

Total TPE Earned: 78

Average Capped TPE per Week: 5.5 TPE 

 

Smith is currently in his fifth week in the VHL and in his previous four, he has consistently added a decent amount of capped TPE to his player, earning 6 capped TPE in three of those four weeks. The one thing to suggest to Smith is to make sure he always at least submits welfare per week, as there was one week where he missed out and had he submitted he would have earned 8 TPE as opposed to 4.

 

Smith can earn more TPE and maximise his total possible TPE per week by submitting for the 6 TPE Graphic/Media/Podcasts, point tasks, but if he would prefer to keep doing welfare instead then he can still earn up to 10 TPE per week by doing the following (Left off Trivia as Smith has been doing a good job submitting for this already):

Press Conferences

 

Smith has actually submitted for Press Conferences in week's past, but has sometimes not submitted answers or maybe not been provided questions to answer. If the latter is ever the case, you can instead ask other members questions to earn TPE (5 questions for 1 TPE, 10 questions for 2 TPE). If you're struggling for topics, it may be easier to ask questions towards team-mates since you will be more familiar with them.

 

There's also one uncapped TPE task still remaining for Smith to participate in, it's a long one but generates a big reward at the end of it:

One note of praise for Smith is that he's picked up on opportunities to earn extra uncapped TPE, submitting a suggestion to the league in this week's event for an extra 2 TPE along with purchasing the first generation package in the store to net him an extra 5 TPE.

 

Draft Prospects

 

While he has been in 60th place in TPE in the Draft Rankings in each of the last three weeks, I feel Smith has the potential to rise up the rankings, especially since he's taken part in a lot of the activities thus far, he just needs to do them more consistently. If he takes on all my advice for TPE earning, he can rise up as high as the fourth round, but even if he only takes on some of that, he can move from his current projection of sixth round to mid-late fifth round.

Emil Passerelli declared his intentions to join the VHLM a day after the VHLM Draft and as a result, he was able to pick his own team for Season 65. Going with the Saskatoon Wild, Passerelli started off the season as a third line winger who also played on the second penalty kill unit but as he's progressed as a player, Passarelli was given a more important role on the team and he's now currently a second line winger who is also on the main powerplay unit. Given that he's not a first line player for the Wild, Passerelli has done well to rack up the points regardless as he's currently fourth on the team in points with only the team's first line forwards ahead of him. Surprisingly for a player who considers himself a playmaker and has aspirations to lead the VHL in assists one day, he actually ranks higher in the VHLM in goals (22nd) than assists (31st), which is mainly thanks to a very solid shot percentage (his 13.64% is 14th out of the 38 forwards who've played over 1000 minutes in the VHLM, he's actually better in that category than VHLM's leading goalscorer Hunter Hearst Helmsley). He's recorded a surprising amount of penalty minutes to this point given that he's one of the smaller wingers in the league, but as we've mentioned before this is predominantly because of the less physical VHLM, so isn't a cause of concern for Passerelli's post VHLM career. 

 

Player Build

 

 

As stated earlier, Passarelli stated his intentions to be regarded as a playmaker and one day lead the league in assists, so it might be considered surprising that his scoring and passing are at the same level, but this isn't actually too bad as having somewhat decent scoring can also set his player up for assists through deflected shots/rebounds. He's a very well rounded player right now with no attributes over 70 at this moment, so it will be surprising which will be the first to break that barrier. Passarelli has focused on improving his defense and puck handling the most over the month of March, adding 15 TPE to both attributes and these are solid attributes to get moved up, although Passarelli's skating could also do with an improvement, as 60 skating is fairly low for a top VHLM winger. The best thing about Passarelli's build is that there's not been any added attributes to any less important attributes, meaning it's all been focused towards the key attributes required for Passarelli to succeed

 

Main Area for Improvement: Skating

 

Like mentioned with Smith previously, skating is usually at least 70 by the pros, so could use a bit of focus in the coming weeks.

 

Consider Leaving: None

 

I feel like Passarelli's done a really solid job with allocating his TPE so far, no attributes he's added to that he shouldn't or any attributes that are too high. 

 

TPE Earning

 

Total TPE Earned: 131

Average Capped TPE per Week: 9.2 TPE 

 

For a player who has predominantly done welfare rather than the six TPE point tasks, Passarelli has done a very good job of getting to or even close to the maximum capped TPE that he can per week. He's also done his Rookie Profile, his Biography, claimed his first-generation bonus and bought a first-gen package in the player store, so he's done almost everything he can to earn uncapped TPE. 

 

The one bit of advice that I can give Passarelli is to have a look into the Recruitment Rewards, as I haven't seen him claim TPE for this yet and Juan Jaundice (a player who is currently at 95 TPE) listed him as his recruiter, so if Jaundice continues to keep earning TPE, Passarelli can earn up to 15 uncapped TPE, which is a big boost! 

 

Draft Prospects

 

Passarelli is in an interesting position heading into the draft. He's earning TPE at a very solid rate and there are definitely players that he will overtake prior to the draft, but there's also a few players below him in the rankings right now but are earning 12 capped TPE per week, so stand a chance of overtaking him. I think right now, Passarelli is most likely an early to mid third rounder, but if he decided to move to 6 TPE Point Tasks rather than welfare in addition to his regular activities, he could well sneak into the second round.
