Ranking every Logo/Team name in the VHLM from worst to best.

This list is strictly my opinion, I will take into account logos, team names, their history and how they relate to each city. This was extremely difficult as I love every logo design and was hard to make a list solely based on that. So please bare with me during this somewhat in-depth dive of each team.

12. Minnesota Storm

image.png.66b40034a88ee790be4bcc89b9705278.png

The storm comes in last for me although like I said the logo is very clean and well done; the overall significance the logo has with the name and the city has it in this spot. While Minnesota is known for having harsh winters and the occasional tornado, most people know Minnesota for being the land of 10,000 lakes and the North Star. The Logo does a decent job representing the wilderness and beautiful nature that is at the people of Minnesota’s disposal. Although I really like the design of this logo I think there could be a better one to represent the “Storm”. With all of this in account compared to the other teams; it comes in at #12.

11. San Diego Marlins

image.png.c1c1d253f44968a4e16757dc74218c1a.png

Coming in at number 11 is the San Diego Marlins. San Diego has done a good job of paying homage to an adult league baseball team with the same name. Founded in the Spring of 1994, the Marlins have been going strong for 25+ years now. They continue play in the San Diego Adult Baseball League. I love the colors of the logo and San Diego Marlins rolls off the tongue, although I do find it lacks creativity and with so many great ones to compete against the marlins clock in at #11.

10. Ottawa Lynx

image.png.9a3a0d174852e939529e5a351c9ecb3d.png

Ottawa Lynx comes in at #10 on the list (Top 10 baby!) I really like the simplicity of this logo although I am not sure it is the best fit with Ottawa as the national animal the beaver might have also worked. Although much like the Marlins; Ottawa is paying it back to some history in Minor Baseball in the Ottawa area. The Ottawa Lynx were a Minor League Baseball team that competed in the Triple-A International League (IL) from 1993 to 2007. The team's home field was Lynx Stadium in Ottawa, Ontario. Over 15 seasons, the team was an affiliate of the Montreal Expos (1993–2002), Baltimore Orioles (2003–2006), and Philadelphia Phillies (2007). At the time, it was the only IL franchise in Canada. Owners moved the team to Allentown, Pennsylvania, beginning with the 2008 season, where it became known as the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.  Although I don’t love the name, the history is endearing and lands Ottawa at the #10 spot.

9. Las Vegas Aces

image.png.5d6beed1e5070bab43397bc8645747d0.png

I mean its Vegas, right? In a city built off gambling, going with a name like the Aces is simple and an easy choice. The new logo goes really well with the name and the color scheme. Also going by the name of the Las Vegas Aces is the women’s basketball team in the WNBA. This makes the choice of name a little less creative, with many options at their disposal with all the great attractions Las Vegas brings I think the name could be even better than it is. Overall, it is solid, and it works well enough for me to get #9 spot on my list.

8. Mississauga Hounds

image.png.caabf8527da6af03227ccbfcd3a54daf.png

First off, I must say this logo is very nice. The shading of black works so well with this blue, and the bold “Hounds” works perfectly. Mississauga is home to Canada's largest and busiest airport- Toronto Pearson International. More than 32 million passengers on more than 70 airlines to 180 destinations travel to and from the airport everyday. While there is no mention of Hounds throughout the city a lady was attacked by “coywolves” once. Mary Smith says that on April 30, she was walking her dog Cricket on the Etobicoke Creek Trail at night when a pack of six coyotes approached her. Smith says that she fended off the coyotes with a stick she found nearby. She says she also tried to make herself appear bigger by yelling and lifting her arms up. She says the animals bit her pant legs and chased her dog, who was able to escape them. Coywolves a hybrid of a coyote and wolf are known to wreak havoc in the GTA, Maybe a more suitable name for Mississauga.

7. Saskatoon Wild

image.png.df7a6b73d15e919e9e4c8a9574bd6b81.png

Much like the Lynx logo, I really like the simplistic style of this logo. The color scheme works well with the two-tone blue and white. The Saskatoon Wild is also the minor hockey association brand in Saskatoon, this is a really nice touch when it comes to naming your team. Most players coming from this area and made it pro played for the minor Saskatoon Wild at one time or another. The overall package of logo, color scheme and history behind the team name lands this at #7.

6. Philadelphia Reapers

image.png.c6af1463c964cfb43983ed90806e1d10.png

Now this was an interesting one for me; at first glance I do not really enjoy this logo. The yellow does not mesh well with the adjacent colors in my opinion and at a distance there is a lot going on and might be hard to make out what the logo is. With that said I absolutely love the name Philadelphia Reapers; its works so well together and not only rolls off the tongue but is also spooky! A short two-hour drive north of Philadelphia in Blakley, PA you will find their famous Reapers Revenge haunted tours.

A very popular attraction for the people of Philadelphia this was a smart business decision to name the team Reapers and I don’t know about you, but I really want to go here.

5. Houston Bulls

image.png.9d51684da999371f1dad6167a3c21988.png

This is one of the nicest logos in the league. It expressed the city and name in a smooth transition while the colors are vibrant and pop. Unfortunately, Houston’s national animal is an armadillo and not a bull or this logo and team name might have snuck higher up the list. On the other hand, Houston Armadillos kind of has a ring to it. Houston lands at #5 on my list.

4. Halifax 21st

image.png.4082d384f88065ebde5cd41fedc096bd.png

As soon as I saw this logo, I knew it was going to be near the top of my list. Halifax’s logo is simple and has great historic meaning. Halifax 21st comes from Pier 21, Pier 21 was an ocean liner terminal and immigration shed from 1928 to 1971 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Nearly one million immigrants came to Canada through Pier 21, and it is the last surviving seaport immigration facility in Canada. The facility is often compared to the landmark American immigration gateway Ellis Island. The former immigration facility is now occupied by the Canadian Museum of Immigration, the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design as well as various retail and studio tenants. This is a huge time in not only Halifax’s history but Canada’s. Although 21st does not necessarily feel like a usual hockey team name, with the history and well-done logo Halifax comes in at #4 on my list.

3. Yukon Rush

image.png.13ab257c579ec630b29835656f019398.png

The Yukon Rush comes in at #3 on my list. The logo is very nice, the Rushing R may seem obvious, but this is a solid design and the colors work for the Yukon Gold history creating the team name. The Klondike Gold Rush was the seminal event in the Yukon's history. A party led by Skookum Jim Mason discovered gold in Bonanza Creek, a tributary of the Klondike River, in August 1896. An estimated 30,000 to 40,000 people braved numerous hardships to reach the Klondike gold fields in the winter and spring of 1897-1898 after the discovery became known in 1897. With the influx of American stampeders, the Canadian government decided to create a separate territory to better control the situation. A huge moment in Yukon history makes this an easy decision for a team name and with this top-notch design it was a smart decision.

2. Miami Marauders

image.png.11871f3eaaee295a3a742d5479ad591f.png

I did my best to be unbiased on this one I swear! Miami Marauders name goes so well together it should be a VHL team name, but while doing some digging on if there was a history behind this name, I found more then I hoped for. A pirate by the name of Black Caesar was born in the late 17th century somewhere in West Africa. As legend goes, he was a powerful tribal chief with the strength and stature of nearly two men. The cunning chieftain had evaded being enslaved for many years but was tricked into capture when the captain of a slave ship invited him aboard to view treasures and merchandise. While Caesar was admiring the riches, the crew raised anchor and began to set off to sea. By the time Caesar realized what was happening, it was too late. The legend goes that just before the ship arrived at the slave markets on the Florida coast, the ship was struck by a hurricane and destroyed in the storm. Caesar escaped with the help of a sailor whom he had befriended, and the two of them escaped in a longboat to a small island off the coast. While posing as shipwrecked sailors, they would sail out to the vessel offering to take them aboard. Once they were close to the vessel, they brought out their guns and demanded supplies and ammunition, threatening to sink the ship if they were refused. He and the sailor continued this ploy for a number of years and amassed a sizable amount of treasure which was buried on Elliott Key. However, he and the sailor had a falling out over a young woman the mate had brought back from one of the ships they had looted. Fighting over her, Caesar killed his long-time friend in a duel and took the woman for his own. He apparently had a harem on his island, having at least 100 women seized from passing ships, as well as a prison camp which he kept prisoners in stone huts hoping to ransom them. When leaving the island to go on raids, he left no provisions for these prisoners and many eventually starved to death

As horrible as some of that is, that ruthless Marauder laid waste to the Florida area and was not afraid of death. Miami’s logo works very well with the symbol of maybe the most dangerous marauder to ever exist dead or alive.

1.    Mexico City Kings

image.png.63b0df4039c501e9ac6c793c61bdb8bc.png

#1 on my list is the Mexico City Kings; it does not have quite the unique history of the Marauders, Rush or 21st but it has the right formula. The name Kings works very well to represent the indigenous communities that live in Mexico; 25,694,928 people in Mexico self-identify as being indigenous of many different ethnic groups, which constitute 21.5% of Mexico's population. This logo is absolutely stunning and is perfect when describing what makes Mexico what it is; Mexico is known for its food and drink culture, like; tacos, tortillas, burritos, tequila and for being the origin of chocolate. Mexico is also famous for Mayan temples, cenotes, mariachi bands, beach destinations like Cancun, the 'day of the dead' festival, and unfortunately, drug cartels. With all of that in account I see the light side of the logo representing all of the wonderful things Mexico has to offer and why so many tourists go there every single year; while the dark side of the logo presents the drug cartel and the massive criminal activity that also lies within the boarders of Mexico. Overall, this is a very great logo and team name and is my favorite of the bunch.

This is my list of the worst to best logos/team names in the VHLM, thank you for taking the time to read this while you may agree and disagree with certain points, I spent a good amount of time working on this for everyone and I hope you enjoyed the read.

Someone who respects both the 21st and the Kings instead of just bitching about them?

Review: Great media spot Tine. All spaced out, the larger text makes it easier on the eyes and while I hope it'd be a given, thank you for getting all the team logos on here. I feel like you did a great job explaining your opinions on them without sounding forceful or anything similar, and I really appreciate that you took the time to look at any historical meaning to the logos and how they relate to the city itself. 10/10

Fun fact: We had the name first. The WNBA team relocated to Vegas in 2017, years after Robbie named the VHLM team.

I nearly died when someone gave the Halifax franchise the respect that I did

Wow! I learned so much things about the teams, one of them being the choice of name for Halifax, I’ve been wondering that for a while and you just gave me the answer, very good article, keep going like that. 9.5/10

This was an unreal read and it was great to see all of the breakdowns of the logos in the league. I thought it was really well written and the pictures added a very nice bonus. I would love to see some old school reviews as well! 10/10
