  1. Ayyy guess who's not a boomer
  2. With four expansions to the VHL in the last five seasons -- a 50% increase in teams -- it's become clear that player registration and retention has outpaced the league's prior capacity. Season 69's draft class per the most recent rankings is a fair bit smaller than the jam-packed classes of S66-68, but several teams have multiple active players remaining in the minors that are above 200 TPE (even if their TPA is limited by minor league rules). While the Board of Governors has chosen to increase the VHLM TPE cap to 250 in order to accommodate some of its 'tweener' players, the question becomes whether or not these players will be considered VHL-ready by the time they end a season over 250 TPE - whether that's their first VHLM season or their first season post-entry. Indeed, we've already seen a team or two largely abandon picks (as is the case in real-life leagues) in favor of a chance to compete at the highest possible level, or alternatively tank as much as possible. Because new players through no fault of their own won't get minutes in the big leagues, or may be perceived as something of a detriment to their VHL team if given minutes, the question then becomes: is this a problem, or is it the minor leagues working exactly as intended? Will general managers start spurning picks when their first two lines are filled?

  5. 1. ? DRAMA ALERT ? Diljodh Starload was traded for picks and retired very shortly thereafter, with possible miscommunication the proposed culprit. What's your impression of this deal? 2. Should anything about rookie contracts change, in your opinion? 3. How do you feel about free agency in the VHL? Is it exciting, too limited, etc.? 4. If you had to pick a 'breakout player of the year' (veteran, rookie, or anything in between), who would it be? 5. How many hours a day do you think hedge sleeps? 6. Starload drama aside, how have Vancouver (23-16-3, 5th overall) maintained their success in spite of Beau Louth's retirement? 7. What sport do you think deserves a sim league of its own? 8. Who's a player you feel is undervalued/underappreciated by their team? 9. Is there parity in the league right now? Is that a good or bad thing for the future? 10. Malmo only really had one significant player change this season. How'd they go from worst to (almost) first? Does signing Matt Thompson alone cause that significant a change?

  14. Um I'm sorry wHAT What are these things in the "P" column?
  15. Review Okay, so I'm still learning hockey in general, let alone advanced statistics, but it seems as though Fenwick is a more defense-dependent measure of shot quality than Corsi (as blocked shots aren't counted with Fenwick - thus a large difference in Corsi & Fenwick indicates excellent defense??), and Corsi can be used to measure goalie workload/approximate time of possession. At any rate, as I try to understand what exactly these stand for from a complete novice's perspective, I'm enjoying these articles you write. Thanks for making an attempt to explain them!
  16. Review I don't know about half of these fancy Pokemon, but you get props from me for actually going through the effort to parse the billion-plus varieties (there have to be a billion now, right? What are we on, generation 5,500?) there are for meaningful comparisons. The MLP Rapidash/Doyle and depressed Machoke/Louth comparison made reading this article oh-so-easy. There are a couple of flow and tense-oriented errors (e.g. "funny enough this would also have fitted Fang, as he has problems of getting into bed at a decent time") but that's something that's bound to happen in an article this long.
  17. Review I think this is a wonderfully-helpful article, and outlines some basics that aren't always clear to new members. Some people don't know you can write a quik 200ish word VHL.com article for 2 TPE, or that the cap is 12 TPE weekly, so most people do one of the highest-earning single tasks (MS, gfx) and just kinda leave it at that. We should be encouraging members to take additional steps to just write things they enjoy, and do it in a way where they know they'll get something out of it for their player and creativity. Great stuff, and I'd love to see this tackled again or at least disseminated to new members!
  18. Review I clearly can't say too much as to the content, as I've never watched cricket before - but it sounds like an awesome event to keep track of nonetheless. Main comments I'd have are to make sure you punctuate long quotes, e.g.: to Does any of this vocabulary actually make sense to me? Well, no, but it sounds like it could make sense for someone who knows about cricket haha.
  19. Review I felt this to be a reasonably realistic look into a new VHL depth player's experience into their rookie season - especially on a team that has depth/youth in spades. The way you communicate from Micha's point of view is also pretty realistic for a young player who's still finding his way in the league. Keep it up!
  20. Review No stylistic or grammar/spelling comments to speak of here. I personally might opt for a left align instead of a center align for aesthetics, but that's no knock against you. Any kinks the Titans might have had were clearly evened out over the next several games, but it's always nice to have a self-aware article that critically evaluates one's own team. Awesome work as always.
  21. Review Welcome to the league! I've always been a fan of stream-of-consciousness/interviewer commentary-style interviews, and this is no exception; articles like these always give a little life to the league, especially since we get a chance to step away from the hockey for a little bit and just enjoy some storytelling. English might not be your first language, but there aren't even many stylistic recommendations I'd make. There are some small grammatical mistakes (forgetting a "." at the end of a sentence or two might be the worst of them).
  22. Review Glad to have you back in the league! I think your choice of topic is pretty valuable - lots of GMs won't look much past the first 10-20 picks nowadays, and bringing the spotlight to your teammates is important. The only comments I have with respect to grammar/spelling are as follows: you have a few randomly capitalized mid-sentence words (Seven, Corps) and the opposite (looks like, under the right management). Otherwise, I felt your content was a nice read!
  23. D - Apollo Hackett Gotta invest in yourself, yanno? >_>
  24. Riga, Latvia - Just 29 games into the season, Apollo Hackett has matched his point total from last season. Let's not get too hasty - to be fair, it's just 24 points, and his lone goal was the game-winner against Moscow just a day or two ago. But clearly there's been a shift in mentality for the third-year defender, who signed a one-year extension with Riga to stay through the S69 season. And while he's on pace to have a few more penalty minutes than last season, especially with a blundering 6 PIMs in Riga's most recent game against Moscow, his offensive impact will hopefully continue to improve. "Practiced a lot of passing in the offseason," Hackett said in a recent presser, "I got tired of being an offensive liability. It's never good to know a team needs a spark on offense that you can't provide - and it became pretty damning when I sat out virtually every power play last season and didn't have an overall positive impact on the ice. Hits are nice to have, but I want to make sure I'm on the ice building an advantage for my lines." The top position in the league standings has changed hands several times this season already; with the European Conference easily five teams deep this season and an incredibly competitive but young Seattle squad on the American side nipping at Riga's heels for first place, Hackett needs to continue to round out his game - we'll see soon enough if that's by offense or defense.
  25. It might be late in the week BUT AT LEAST I'M HERE. Have some questions! 1. By some weird voodoo magic we're #1 in the standings. How long do we have until we get hit with the good ol' STHS curse? 2. How do you feel about our current situation at goalie? How does it compare to the rest of the league? 3. Calgary netminder Brick Wahl has earned 23 penalty minutes so far. What's his deal? 4. A few currently-active players (Thompson, Bailey, Davis, Palo) have been at the top of the points board for a while. Who's the young player that will take over for them when they retire? 5. Lance Flowers has a pretty compelling argument for RotY so far. Will he get shown up by someone else, or is this our award-winner? 6. A recent forum trend has been the count to 1,000 thread. What's your conspiracy theory about its end goal? 7. Even with 4 teams in the playoffs, the EU Conference is easily 5 teams deep (we'll get there, Prague). In your opinion, who gets left out? 8. The NA Conference still has a very young Seattle team at its helm. Is this the future of the VHL? 9. Is Toronto's competitive window closed? 10. What does Davos need to do to become a frontrunner?
