Rodriguez Excited to Start New Chapter

Another VHL draft has come and gone and Felipe Rodriguez couldn’t be happier with where he ended up.  The Quebec City Meute made a huge deal before the trade acquiring three defenseman and the first overall pick in the draft.  With that pick, they selected John Sleeman, defenseman from the Brampton Blades and the consensus first overall selection by most draft predictions.  Then, in a move that caught Flip by surprise, they selected him with the third overall selection, bolstering their blue line for the foreseeable future.
Felipe actually was the general manager for Sleeman when he was playing in Brampton so Felipe is familiar with Sleeman’s game.  He is very excited for the opportunity to play alongside the offensively gifted defenseman and likes what Sleeman brings to the table.  Flip has some maturing to do in the minors before he gets an opportunity to play with Sleeman in the big club.  While in the minors, Quebec City expects Rodriguez to hone his skills a little more so he’s prepared to play at the next level.
The VHLM draft is now quickly approaching so Felipe will find out tonight who requests his skills.  He has not heard from any general managers for this VHLM draft like he had for the VHL draft.  It will be very interesting to see who selects Flip as it is hard to say how long he stays in the minors.  If he’ll be buried in the lineup, it could be beneficial for him to stay in the minors for more than one year.  That is an issue for a later date.  Last year, after a slow start with the Ottawa Lynx, Flip accrued 55 points in 66 games.  He looks to be better than a point per game player this coming season in the minors.  Early on this off-season, Flip worked hard on his defensive technique as well as his passing.  He also hit the gym and worked on his strength a little bit, a part of his game that could use a lot of work.  Then, during the Meute training camp, he worked more on his defensive ability and his skating.

Flip recently participated in the Top Prospect game, team Toast against team Pancakes.  Rodriguez was on the top pairing alongside Black Velvet on team Toast.  Team Toast came away with the victory in a high scoring 11-8 game.  Rodriguez got three assists, two secondary and one primary, while seeing almost 31 minutes of ice time.  He was also credited with four shots, three hits, two blocked shots, and one takeaway all while not committing any turnovers himself.  John Sleeman, his future pairing mate was able to get 5 assists while on the losing team Pancakes.  He also led the team with seven shots on goal.  The Sleeman-Rodriguez pairing of the future looks to be a very dangerous one.  Both players being so young only makes it that much scarier.  They’ll have plenty of time once Rodriguez gets called up to play together and get used to sharing the ice.  Keep an eye on the Quebec City Meute blue line in a few years, they can be a game changing duo if they get the opportunity to play together.

Well, he did it. Felipe Rodriguez of the Ottawa Lynx got the first hat trick of his career. Last time we spoke to him, we asked if he thought he would get it before the end of the season. He conservatively said,"Maybe" but he doesn't have to wonder now. Flip finished the year with 19 goals and 36 assists for 55 points in 66 games. His Lynx are now up 3-2 in the VHLM Finals over the Moscow Red Wolves. We caught up with him after the latest loss in Game 5.

Reporter: "Thanks for taking the time to talk to us. After three consecutive wins, it's gotta be tough to take two losses in a row and give Moscow some momentum."

Felipe: "No problem. And yeah, it sucks, it's tough, but we'll pull through. We always do. We knew Moscow was going to be tough. Brampton came off a sweep and won the first game, and we were able to topple them to make it here. I'm not too worried about us coming together and turning it back around."

Reporter: "We noticed your first post season fight tonight, what brought that on?"

Felipe: "It actually might have been the first fight of my career. I got pummeled. I was trying to spark the team and get some offense going but that turned out to be counterproductive."

Reporter: "We'd have to check the stats to see if that's your first fight. But it wasn't pretty, you're right about that. You'll have a nice black eye to carry into the next game. How do you change your personal game plan to avoid the "reverse sweep" some are predicting?"

Felipe: "I don't think I personally need to change anything, I don't think the team needs to change anything. I know it seems like something has to change but it's the game plan that got us this far so I think we need to wait it out. I do not want to play a game 7 though. We need to close out this series next game."

Reporter: "With the draft getting ever closer, have any teams reached out to you? How do you expect your game to translate at the next level?"

Felipe: "I think it's safe to answer these types of questions now. I have been contacted by one VHL team who was interested in seeing how I would fit. All I can say is it is a team with a top 5 pick. So that's pretty exciting. To be honest, I'm not completely sure which draft I'm eligible for and which league I'll be playing in next season but I'm excited nonetheless. I don't expect to make the jump to the VHL just yet anyway.  I think I'll be in the VHLM for at least one more season. I need to work on a few aspects of my game before I'm ready for the big time."

Reporter: "Thanks for your time.  Good luck wherever you go.  We'll catch up with you after the draft."

Felipe: "Thank you, talk to you then."

That's all for this edition of Latino in the News.  We will catch up with Felipe after the draft to see where he ends up. Thanks and stay tuned for next edition.

evrydayimbyfuglien reacted to Higgins in Claimed:Black Velvet Rookie Profile [Reviewed]

    Black Velvet #8
    Defenseman
    Hometown: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
    Height: 6'2"
    Weight: 215 lbs.

Welcome to the Victory Hockey League, Black Velvet. The man, the myth, the legend from Mississippi in the middle of a dry spell. Born in Toronto, Ontario, this good old Canadian boy has been practicing the game of hockey ever since listening to Leafs Lunch on TSN 1050 with hosts Bryan Hayes, Jamie 'Noodles' McLennan, and Jeff 'ODog' 'Snacks' O'Neill. Black Velvet listened to the radio show for over a year like a new religion that will bring you to your knees. In this case it brought Black Velvet to the ice rink, where he would put on his Beats by Dre headphones (now only $199.99 at your local Shoppers Drug Mart) and practice hockey for hours listening to the Leafs Lunch crew bloviate about the NHL and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

This is where Black Velvet wound run into another hockey player, code named Unassisted. Unassisted was also a native of the Toronto area and the two would practice together whenever they could. The strange thing about them practicing together, was the fact that Unassisted refused to put the puck into the net if Black Velvet had previously touched it. The two friends would play hockey until the sun was setting like molasses in the sky. During the off-season when Leafs Lunch was unfortunately off the air for the few months, Black Velvet and Unassisted would listen to old episodes of the radio show to cure their boredom, if you were to see the two of them, you would have seen Black Velvet and that little boys smile. During this time the two friends decided to declare for the VHL, hoping to gain the attention to someday be one of the three stars on Leafs Lunch.

Black Velvet joined the Moscow Red Wolves for the last five games of the regular season, where he found tally five assists. In the playoffs the Red Wolves would make it to game six in the VHLM Founder's Cup finals, but would lose to the Ottawa Lynx. In 11 playoff games, Black Velvet scored 6 goals and 7 assists and also threw 29 hits. This performance from a waiver pick up player out of the small rural village of Toronto, caught the eye of scouts for the S47 VHLM Draft, and the rest is history.

Best friends forever, Unassisted and Black Velvet (in their dreams playing for the Maple Leafs).

    PROS
    Slow Southern Style
This is a unique characteristic of Black Velvet, and it will set him apart from the rest of his draft class. He has experience of playing that slow southern style type of game, which no one else has ever seen or heard of before. It's like a secret weapon that Black Velvet holds until he really needs it, such as the Continental Cup game 7 overtime game. Any other time is just redundant to bring out the slow southern style, but if Black Velvet ever gets a chance to reveal his true style, watch out it will revolutionize the game of hockey, forever.

    Feed Bag Enthusiast
It's amazing what the human body can do when it is pushed to it's maximum limits. Black Velvet is no stranger to late night feed bags after a late night out at Scooters with the boys. A feed bag typically consists of a 60 pack of McNuggets and 15 sweet and sour sauses from McDonalds. This means that whatever team gets Black Velvet will know they have only the most physically fit specimens on planet earth.

    THE Rolodex
This isn't a typical Rolodex, this is THE Rolodex. The one that legends are created from, the one that you thought was only real in fairy tales. With THE Rolodex, Black Velvet has a never ending stream of hardware to take out every night of the week. Black Velvet has been known to send his Rolodex conquers a fruit basket the morning after, with cantaloupe, YES CANTALOUPE.

    CONS
    Leafs Lunch Influence
Black Velvet has no role models or idols, outside of the Leafs Lunch gang, including Larry Mullen et al. This can be a real downside as the only reason Black Velvet is even coming into the league is to get the attention of the show. And when lunch time comes around don't expect Black Velvet to be in the gym or on the ice, he will be in total isolation (sometimes with Unassisted) listening to Leafs Lunch.

    Man Moves
Man moves consist of things like replacing your cars missing gas tank cover with the cover from a box of baby wipes. Total man move. Man moves can often lead to Black Velvet losing focus on playing hockey, as he tries to think of the greatest man moves to impress his idol, Jeff O'Neill.

    Stamkos to Toronto
Mark my words VHL, if Steven Stamkos signs with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Black Velvet will be on the first flight to Toronto. It doesn't matter if he is playing for the Moscow Red Wolves or the Seattle Bears, he will rip up his contract and be back in Toronto by 7pm that night to get in line to purchase an official Stamkos jersey from the ACC. This could be a real danger for any teams outside of the Toronto Legion, look out.

As with any place on the internet, you're going to have comments that you don't like or whatever, just ignore it, there's no need to call people names or anything. And like Frank said, it doesn't look very good on you if you quit just because one person was negative.

evrydayimbyfuglien reacted to atw2592 in Oslo S47 draft board [Reviewed]
The Oslo Storm have picks 12, 20, and 23 in the upcoming season 47 VHLM dispersal draft. Considering there are 22 players in the draft as of right now, Oslo expects to be fucked out of their 23rd overall selection and thus only pick twice. Here are their prospects:

    1. G - Dmitri Dadanov: 51 TPE
Goaltending is important to winning games in the VHLM and having a great one could be the difference between a contender and a pretender. Since Holik and Zhumbayev will likely be off the board at pick number 12, Dadanov would be Oslo’s top choice. Even he might be selected by the time pick 12 rolls around, but the Storm are hopeful that some of the offensive players in the draft take priority.

    2. C – Vincent Adultman: 78 TPE
Adultman is another player who may not be available at pick 12. However, he has a defensive build that may scare some teams off at the end of the first round. Adultman is a strong forward who won’t offer much in terms of scoring, but can be the leader of a team in the center of the ice.

    3. RW – Pavel Varushkin: 30 TPE
Varushkin may be the sleeper pick of the draft if he falls to Oslo at pick number 12. He hasn’t had a whole lot of experience, but comes from a trusted agent who is known for churning out solid hockey players. His skills are yet to be showcased on the ice, but the hype may be enough for him to end up being a first round pick.

    4. RW – Bogdan Podarok: 51 TPE
Podarok is high on Oslo’s draft board and could very well fall to the Storm at number 12. He is a balanced young winger who showed promise at the end of season 46. If he polishes his scoring touch, Podarok could end up being in the top 10 in points when season 47 is said and done. At the worst, he will be a solid first liner for the Storm.

    5. RW – Rock Soapwart: 44 TPE
Soapwart is a strong defensive forward who could transition into a defenseman if he falls to the Storm. He is another very young prospect who has the potential to be a star in the VHLM next season. Unfortunately, his build won’t produce much scoring and his draft stock will drop because of it.

    6. D – Randy Savage: 32 TPE
Savage is the only defenseman on the Oslo draft radar because there are so many other great ones who will be picked in the first round. Savage is an underrated player who should develop into an outstanding player next season. He will definitely be available at pick 12 if the Storm want to go a defensive route.

    7. RW – Mikhail Gribov: 46 TPE
Gribov is an interesting player to say the least. He is active, but hasn’t actually improved his player in almost a month. Whoever takes a chance on Gribov could be getting a solid player or a bust. For that reason, Oslo will probably only look at Gribov in the third round.

    8. C – Rene Bergeron: 0 TPE
Bergeron is the second interesting player in the season 47 draft. He created his player and later was quoted as saying “I don’t even remember doing this.” For that reason, Bergeron will only be a speculative selection if he falls to Oslo in the third round.
