Good formatting, I like the picture.

    The Cretin from Sweden approves.

I'd suggest adding hometown/country to the stat block, it otherwise looks pretty good.

I really like the way you put this one, great paragraph! Gives me an almost Lindross-type vibe.

Needs a conclusion but otherwise solid. +1

Review: I like how this biography was broken into subsections, made it easier to follow along! The quotes also made the article believable and captivating. ''He taught him the importance of self-reliance, strength, and health.'' I would've love for you to maybe spend a bit more time on this with maybe a quik one sentence per theme and possibly tie that back into Thorny's current game and how it's impacted his career. High School and Junior team segments were well developed.

This is an in-browser Photoshop alternative. It has basically replicated all of Photoshop's features. You can even upload existing .psds. I'd recommend this over GIMP for sure.

jack reacted to Gustav in Unlocking the Satanic Messages of Halifax's New Logo
This may end up being more of a media spot than a VHL.com article, but it's all I want to write about at the moment and I need my last 2 TPE for the week. Let's get to it.

The Halifax 21st recently unveiled a new team logo recently, which looks like this:

While everyone is looking at this new logo, it's occurred to me that this may end up distracting people from the fact that HALIFAX IS A SATANIC CULT, and our new logo is no exception to the rule. What we have here is direct evidence, nay, proof, of the devil-worship the league has seen in Canada's easternmost major city (at least, easternmost as far as I'm aware of as an American). To start, let's take note of the fact that the ship on our logo has six windows, as we see below:

Count them! That's right. Six windows. Six is a Satanic number, and when we take a look at the numbers even further, we see that the meaning is somewhat deeper...
The team name is the "21st". 21 is a multiple of three, as we see, and three sixes in a row gives us THE DEVIL'S NUMBER ITSELF, 666.
Let's not forget about the number multiplied by three, though--seven. You've got that right, the six windows in the picture, combined with the team's name, give us 666 repeated seven times. At once, this is a symbol of the seven deadly sins, the surest way to the fires of hell, as well as being an open mockery of God's seven archangels, one of whom, Michael, famously "shouted 'BEGONE THOT' and yeeted Lucifer from the kingdom of heaven" (that's what it says in the Book of Revelation, look it up).
As well, let us keep in mind that the eyes are the window to the soul, and these windows are colored black, signifying spiritual corruption and affiliation with the Devil.

Next, let us turn our attention to the background--not the background of the demonic picture of the ship, but the background of the logo itself, a blue cross on a white background. Look at the logo again and notice it...

Coincidentally (or not), this background is the Scottish flag, with the colors switched. Have a look at the Scottish flag and see if you agree:

Now, a bit about the Scottish flag here--the white cross represents the patron saint of Scotland, St. Andrew. To switch the colors of the logo is to make a mockery of the nation of Scotland, its patron saint, and by extension Christianity--something that a true Satanist would enjoy and a blatant symbol of the spirit of the team, whether in spiritual nature absent or outright evil.

    Back to the logo, anyway...

Notice that the ship in the logo is steam-powered. You know how old steam-powered ships work?

Yeah, you see that. Coal gets fed into a giant boiler, which ultimately provides the heat necessary for water to evaporate, and you know the rest. Well, check it out--the steam-powered ship is a Satanic symbol. First of all, in the above picture, we see men working. Working in the boiler room on one of these ships was backbreaking stuff, with long shifts and high temperatures. Sound familiar? Sound like hell? You bet. Not only this, but coal is made of mostly carbon left over from dead organisms, such as dinosaurs or trees or one day human beings, making the boiler itself a symbol of Hell and people burning.

Look at the logo again, I bid you:

Notice how in the middle of the ship, we have a large wooden mast. This can be taken as nothing but a direct mockery of the large wooden cross upon which Jesus died. Need further evidence? Jesus died between two thieves, just as Houston's chances at the cup last season died between @McWolf and @Thranduil. Need further proof? The mast is the centerpiece of not one or two but THREE Satanic symbols, as we see below:

A large arrow can be drawn by following the lines created by the mast the front of the ship, and the shape of the waves in front. This is symbolic of the intended direction of those representatives of Halifax (straight down to the fiery depths of Hell), further emphasized by the fact that the same arrow follows a line through the smokestack and into the boiler (see above).

A pentagram can be drawn using the five extremes of the ship's outline, with the mast bring right at the top.

And, finally, we can draw an upside-down cross by following the line of the mast down the front of the ship and crossing it with the line of the ship's deck.

So, I bid all of you people, BE ON THE LOOKOUT for the DEVIL'S TRICKERY which is alive and well in Halifax.

    Hi @jack
@Motzaburger sorry I didn't get to your logo, but I'm tired. Maybe some other time.

With the playoffs officially done it’s time to unveil something the league has been sitting on for a little while ago. As you know, a few seasons ago we made a monumental error of hiring a designer that had a nice portfolio but ultimately screwed us by making the stinker the a logo currently belonging to the Halifax 21st. This logo can be seen here, depicted in what should be it’s natural state:

Obviously that logo was pretty much hated by everyone and for pretty valid reasons, it was awful. However we had paid for it and didn’t want to pay for another one so we lived with it. Cue a few weeks ago when I was chatting with Halifax GM @Thranduil about maybe allowing the team to re-brand. Cue then very generous offers from @jack and @Motzaburger to help the cause and we arrive, after a few weeks of revisions, at this momentous occasion. The Titanic logo (not actually but that’s what everyone took it to be) is officially sinking to the bottom of the Atlantic so that the 21st may be re-born again. I present to you not 1 but 2 new logos for the team!

First up is Jack’s design which is the team’s new primary logo:

And the 2nd is Motza’s design which the team will use as an alternate logo:

It is the league’s hope that these new logos, while keeping the team’s name and identity, will lead a new wave of players into the VHLM and continue the traditions that Halifax has started in the team’s young history.

    Llandysul, Wales - 2019

    Childhood

Fade in from black. Rolling green hills, dreary backdrop. A smattering of similar yet unique houses pepper the grass. Inside one of them sat an infant Thorny. His father a blacksmith, and his mother a barmaid. Two tough Welsh cookies. Thorny's childhood kept him within his hometown of Llandysul. There was never any reason to leave. In elementary school Underyew was exposed to a number of sports, and he tended to excel at those where he could use his strength. Rugby, lacrosse, a bit of soccer here and there.

Thorny's father Trahaearn often took his boy on walks through the Welsh countryside. He taught him the importance of self-reliance, strength, and health.

    Secondary School

The athletics prowess of Thorny offered him opportunities to travel within Wales. He often stayed in Cardiff, and eventually witnessed live ice hockey for the first time. The Cardiff Devils of the Elite Ice Hockey League have an established program and exciting atmosphere that immediately drew Thorny in. It was physical, it was fast, it was what Thorny wanted to do.

"I had barely even heard of hockey before that night," Thorny recalls. "I immediately knew that this is what I wanted to pursue. I wanted to play hockey."

Beginning hockey after the age of 15 is usually not a typical path towards elite play. But a certain amount of determination can sometimes outweigh negative factors. Underyew was forced to make a decision. Live with his family in Llandysul, and abandon his dreams? Or move to Cardiff and take a risk.

    We know what happened next.

Thorny's size and strength convinced the coaching staff of Cardiff Devils affiliate program to coach Thorny over the summer. Throughout his youth Thorny had been working with his father, saving money, and building muscle.

By the start of the season Thorny was skating as well as pretty much any 15-year-old Welshman could. Coaches wanted to see whether he could make use of his strength while in game situations.

"The first game was eye-opening, to be honest," Thorny admitted. "I had doubts, I had second thoughts. But I didn't want to let down my parents. I didn't want to waste the effort I put it. I put my head down and got to work."

And work he did. Thorny watched as many local Devils games as he could. He studied the patterns, he learned to position himself better than before, but he had a lot of catching up to do.

The next year Thorny played for the U18 Cardiff Junior Devils at the age of 18, playing for just a little over 12 months.

"That was a huge adjustment. I was essentially going from rec leagues to the most competitive league I could conceivably play in.

"My teammates weren't really happy with my inexperience, my coaches were helpful but definitely hard on me. It was a draining year, physically and emotionally. But it transformed my playing completely."

Thorny quickly showed that he could keep up in the league. He could score, he could make plays, and he could hit. His teammates could rely on him, and this helped his confidence in his game. Coaches could trust him in tense situations. Thorny started to excel. Every part of his game accelerated. He felt that becoming a pro was a realisable goal.

    Junior Team

    "I was devastated."

While Thorny was a long shot, he didn't make the cut for the U20 team when he was 17. Great Britain is not known as a hockey powerhouse, and if Thorny wanted to prove that he was someone to look out for, the U20 team was the place to do it.

"But you have to keep moving forward." Thorny added.

The following season he led the Cardiff Junior Devils in points, goals, hits, and ice time for a forward. He lead the powerplay, and he was captain of the team. Although generally soft-spoken and reserved on the ice, he did sometimes get into penalty trouble.

Coach Cremon of the Junior Devils said "if I could just control his head, he'd be my ultimate player. Sometimes I don't know how to convince him to just play the game, not play the games of the opponents."

After a hard fought playoffs, the Junior Devils came out victorious. Thorny celebrated with his teammates, coaches, and family, but had his sights set elsewhere.

"That call was such a relief. I knew my hard work had paid off, this was my chance."

Great Britain had a chance in the IIHF World Junior Championship, and Thorny would be on the team.

All of the media attention was obviously focused on the big countries. Finland, Canada, US, Sweden, Russia. Some Czech and Slovakia thrown in. Nobody knew who Thorny Underyew was, and he was determined to change that.

Different countries have different goals at the U20 Championship. Canada always wants gold. the US always wants to beat Canada. Finland and Sweden love to beat each other. But many of the lower countries are there to prove that they can at least compete, they are worthy of attending. Team Great Britain had been practicing together for months, playing against teams in the EIHL to practise. They were focused and coordinated.

Their first match-up was relatively favourable: Latvia. The game ended 4-3, with Thorny showing up on the score sheet three times. One goal, one assist, and two minutes in the box for slashing. Game two was a stomp, with Great Britain falling under the giant foot that is Canada. 13-0 with only 15 shots on goal for Great Britain, four of which were Thorny's. A relatively valiant effort.

The rest of the tournament went as predicted, but Thorny certainly stood out amongst his compatriots. He was the only one to score over five points, and he managed to get seven in four games, including one game where he had none. It was Great Britain's best showing in modern history. Scouts took notice, and an agent immediately contacted Thorny to gauge his professional interest.

Within a few months, Thorny signed a brief contract with the Las Vegas Aces, and he will be entering the VHLM Draft that is rapidly approaching. Expect Thorny to make a splash as he enters the minor leagues, and watch out as he approaches the pros.

jack reacted to ontanis in A Lithuanian on the block - Tauras Karazija [2/2]
    - Childhood -

Tauras Karazija hails from a small, peaceful and a beautiful country of 3 million people called Lithuania.

Lithuania is mainly known for its three stereotypes: beautiful women, great beer and basketball.

Tauras Karazija was born in 15th of February 2001 in an enterprising railway town of Telsiai, Lithuania. Telsiai is one the smaller towns in Lithuania with just over 25.000 people inhabiting the town with a bad stadium and even worse infrastructure for other sports. So, as you can probably sense it already – not the best place for ice hockey greatness.
Tauras' not-so-yet-thrilling hockey career started in the Telsiai ice rink, located near the Telsiai town stadium. It was one Tauras‘ first hockey memories, as his dad, an ice hockey enthusiast took him down there to see him play with his fellow friends: „I remember being five years old and wobbling my way around the rink, trying not to fall over and smash my nose on the ice as my dad laughed on seeing me struggle“. But something about that wobbling and struggling made Tauras feel strange. It was that strange feeling of gliding through the ice so effortlessly. And that feeling is what made Tauras to fall in love with the beautiful game of hockey.

While attending school in Telsiai, Tauras practiced hockey in the nearest town that had an open-24/7 ice arena in the town of Mazeikiai, a 1-hour bus ride each day from Telsiai. Tauras played centre for local minor hockey teams, helping and leading them to various successes, including the Lithuania Little Hockey League championship.

    - Teenage years -

After turning 14 years-old Tauras Karazija was called up to the Lithuania U-16 team and off to his first national team training camp. And the good thing about hockey in Lithuania, is that the funding for it is so low that all levels of the national team use only one ice rink arena. So that means when U-16 train with, there‘s always a couple of players from the National team, taping their sticks, shin pads or just getting ready for their practice after ours, because ice time was limited. Just as Tauras was finishing up his practice and he was pulled to the side by Mantas Armalis.

Mantas Armalis was the starting goalkeeper for Lithuania National team and quite a known hockey player around. But he was a good player, playing hockey overseas. “You are quite a player”, said Armalis. Tauras could feel the sense of achievement bubbling up inside of him. But a second later, Mantas made sure that Tauras would not get his head up in the clouds for a very long time: “You don’t look right. Your balance is all wrong. You don’t look up enough. You keep your head down too much… You will get murdered by proper defenders if you keep those habits up.” But then, he kept on going with that emotional rollercoaster of a conversation: “Do you ever want to play professional, Tauras?” And at that moment Tauras realized that he has never thought about playing hockey for a living. He never thought about making money off of it. Tauras was a kid who was just happy to put on skates five times a week and just play for the love of the game. But that was the crystallizing moment of his life when Tauras had to decide if he wanted to do this properly or not. All Tauras could mutter out was squeaky “Yeah… Who wouldn’t?”

    - Skating towards the ultimate goal -

After Tauras‘ first U-16 tournament in Liepaja, Latvia he was picked up by Dinamo Riga. Dinamo Riga were going to be playing a friendly match with HC Spartak Moscow and invited Tauras to watch the game. Tauras and his father knew what was in the play. A few days later Tauras was in the car on his way to Latvia’s capital city Riga.

Once in Riga, Tauras Karazija was liked for his skating and his size, so coaches decided that playing defense would be a better fit for Tauras. Truth be told, HK Rīga had very few defensemen, so they needed another guy back on the blue line anyhow. One coach in particular, Aigars Cipruss was the one who taught Tauras how to really play defense, and that’s where Tauras‘ career took off.
Tauras made their team and ended up playing junior for the HK Rīga of the Russian Junior Hockey League (JHL) because it was the best youth league in the Eurasia region.

Aigars Cipruss taught Tauras how to play in a position that was different and new to him - offensive defenseman. It combined Tauras' strengths with team needs. Tauras was moulded as an offensive defenseman that possesses a high level of puck skills, broad rink vision and sense, and smooth skating skills. He was taught that rink vision and passing skills are critical to breaking the puck out of the defensive zone. It’s the ability to complete the first pass successfully that leads to the second, third and fourth passes up ice.
But for a defenseman to play in the biggest minutes of a game, besides being gifted offensively, he must be a responsible defensive player. A defenseman must be able to defend late in periods, execute on the power play and penalty kill, and defend when the game is on the line.

And Tauras really wanted to be that player. So he soaked up every bit and piece of knowledge the coaches gave him. Tauras studied every second of film. Watched every minute of videos that showed how great offensive defensemen played. And he tried to emulate what he heard, saw and learned.
The first year after moving to the bigger club - Dinamo Riga, he was sent to affiliate HK Riga and their junior academy. There Tauras Karazija ended up having a season that did not stand out of the rest very much: 29 games played, 6 goals scored, 9 assists, 15 points in total.

After continuing to work on his skills, fitness and skating, Tauras immediately showed that hard work pays off. Tauras Karazija was given the chance he needed and finished his last season with HK Riga, scoring impressive 13 goals, contributing with 24 assists and 37 points total in 47 regular season games. He scored most points and assists among all defensemen in the JHL. His play in the juniors also contributed to him during the end of the season regularly being a member of Dinamo Riga senior team and sitting on the bench during KHL regular season games.

Time went on, seasons passed and Tauras became more and more comfortable with the notion that he will be a professional hockey player. That he will be doing what he really loved and what felt closest to his heart. The world of hockey and the people that were involved in hockey on and off the field were also getting quite comfortable with the thought of Tauras Karazija playing professionally. Not long after his last season with HK Riga concluded - Tauras Karazija declares himself eligible for the upcoming VHLM draft.

Tips for making sigs/gfx on PS:
Cut out your own player use the pen tool for best results First thing I always do is duplicate the player layer the Image > Adjustments > Desaturate. Then I play with the layer effect. 'Overlay' and 'Soft Light' are my favourites. Get your BG decided upon early and roll with it Stick to 2-3 colours on your sig. Don't do more it's too messy. Give a lighting source by the head use a soft white brush on a new layer. Can also use alternative lighting sources with the other main colours. Best layer effects for these are 'screen' and 'lighten'. Play with the opacity of your layers! Download new fonts from DaFont Utilize layers with layer effects as clipping masks on your text to give it different looks Play around! Once you think you're done you're probably not so mess around with several different paths Use folders for your layers if you want to take the design in different directions or to group things so there is less clutter in your layer pane Use PS. It is superior.
I'm sure there is more, and better, tips I can give but that's all I can think of atm.

    PSD Files:
Here are a lot of my sig .psd files from S66 sigs I have made. Don't copy them they are for LEARNING purposes only to show you how I roll. Feel free to use the player cut-outs if desired.

The biography must be at least 1000 words in length while detailing the history of your player's life, starting off the ice and eventually working up toward it. A more specific rubric can be found on the page here. When claiming the TPE for this task, make sure you submit it under via portal as "Other" --> "Biography"

    Career PT - Rookie Profile
Once per career, you can write a rookie profile that specifically details your player's strengths and weaknesses on the ice. Think of this like a scouting report, where you're telling GMs what to expect out of your player. A more detailed rubric for the rookie profile can be found on this page. This report must be at least 500 words in length, and focus only on your player's on-ice attributes. When turning this task in, be sure to submit it under "Other" --> "Rookie Profile"

    The VHL Fantasy Zone
Every week, players are given the chance to guess the results of upcoming VHL games. This comes in two different forms- the weekly Pick 'Em's (which are worth 2 uncapped TPE for getting all of them correct), and the weekly Score Prediction (which is worth 3 uncapped TPE for getting correct). Even if you don't get it right, it's worth a shot to take a look at the games and give it your best guess! If you want, you can even cheat and copy the guesses of a member that's already posted. These will be posted in this subforum every week.

Player Store- First Generation Doubles Week
If you've got the money (1.5m in player store cash, the amount of every VHLM contract) you can purchase a doubles week if you're on your first player. For those who haven't had one before, a doubles week allows you to claim an extra 6 uncapped TPE if you submit a media spot, graphic, or podcast!

    The VHLM Fantasy Zone
The VHL Fantasy Zone's younger brother allows you to earn even more uncapped TPE for guessing the correct winners and scores. However, these predictions are only available to players within the VHLM, so make use of them while you can! The VHLM Fantasy Zone differs in its TPE rewards, in that the weekly Pick 'Em's are only worth 2 uncapped TPE, but guessing the correct score is worth 4! These will be posted in this subforum every week.

    The First Generation Bonus
As a thank you to the newer members for sticking around and participating in the league, we're offering 10 free uncapped TPE for your first player, once they cross the 100 TPE milestone! If you've passed that mark, or are about to pass that mark, make a post in this thread and use it to submit an update. To make the job of the updates easier, please select "Other" when applying the update and fill out the box as seen below:

    2) League Recap

So, the playoffs are almost over. Eight teams fought hard, but only two remain. The Ottawa Lynx and the Philadelphia Reapers. Both teams have had terrific seasons, and have an equal 8-1 record in the playoffs thus far. The Reapers got here by dispatching the Saskatoon Wild, and the Lynx paved their way by sweeping the Halifax 21st (though 3 of their 4 wins were in overtime!). This should be a good series, and could certainly go the distance. Game 1 should be simmed sometime Tuesday (today!) evening.
