A young Icelandic center for the Ottawa Lynx has quickly risen up draft boards for the upcoming VHL Draft. But who is this young man, and how does he play? Here’s a short scouting report for Richard Penisson. Strengths Scoring: Penisson is a dynamic scorer who will shoot from anywhere and generates a lot of rebound goals due to his willingness to pull the trigger. His scoring rating is 70, which is relatively high for a VHLM player, and his scoring output in his rookie season has been decent. He has 28 points in 37 games, with 13 goals (due to his great shot) and 15 assists (due to his high shot output with 125 shots so far this season). Definitely a top scorer. Defense: Penisson has a surprisingly high 67 defense rating due to his willingness to track back and help. Penisson is a two way center who uses his defensive instincts well despite his small frame (5’9”, 169 lbs), and it shows with his +11 plus-minus. He’s on the ice at the right times and is able to help the defense with good stick lifting and checking abilities (somehow, a player of his stature has 50 hits so far this season) Hands: Penisson’s 65 puck handling rating shows that he’s got some nifty mitts. It’s hard to take the puck off his stick and he can do some moves if need be. Not exactly a dangler, but can do so if willing. Weaknesses Skating: For a player of his size, you’d expect him to be fast, but he’s not exactly a speedy player as shown by his 55 skating rating. Small players normally have blazing speed but he lacks it. Kind of like a Bobby Brink in that sense. Needs to up his speed or else he won’t live up to his potential. Passing: Penisson’s scoring eye leads to him struggling to pass. He doesn’t do it most of the time and when he does it doesn’t go well. No wonder why his passing is a 40; dude really struggles with it. Has to work on his passing because two-way players need to be able to break out with passes, and he just can’t. Size: Penisson is a small kid at 5’9”, 169 lbs., and while this is something he can’t fix, he needs to use it better. Improving his skating as previously mentioned would help with this, as well as throwing the body around more (despite having 50 hits, he could really become a hitting powerhouse as to show he’s not to be messed with). If he does this, he’ll maximize his size to the best he can.

Ottawa drafted a lot of Swiss players in the S70 VHLM Draft. 4, to be exact. Here's a look at those four. Apple is a massive defensive defenseman. The big man is 6'8", 250 pounds, and a shutdown defender as shown by his 70 defense. However, he also has a slight scoring touch with 53 defense. Definitely a player to watch out for in the future. Left winger Big Chungus is a power forward (6'8", 250 pounds) who can score (70 scoring) but also cover in his own end (60 defense). Easily a lock for defensive player of the year in the future. Cummins Aulhovere, a 6'8" 250 pound center (methinks they're all big), is more well-rounded, as shown by his 50 puck handling, 55 defense, and 57 scoring. He's more of a two way forward rather than a power forward, and is another prospect to look out for. Finally, we get to 5'5" offensive defenseman Rich Dickbutt McFudderdudder. He's got 70 scoring, very high for a defenseman, but can hold his own in his own end with 56 defense. McFudderdudder could possibly make a Kastelic-esque switch, moving to forward in the future, but for now is a fantastic offensive defenseman who could easily go point-per-game.

After being unsure if he was actually available to be drafted, young Richard Penisson finally got an answer when he was drafted 24th overall by the Ottawa Lynx in the S70 VHLM Draft. Penisson was surprised that he was draft-eligible despite declaring so late, and was shocked he went so early. “I wasn’t expecting to go in the top 3 rounds as a guy who declared for the draft the day of, so to get picked that high really means a lot to me. It shows that the Lynx have confidence in me to go out there and be a guy who can contribute scoring straight away. It also helps that I wanted to go there, and that they drafted a bunch of guys I knew in Chungus, CBFM, and McFudderdudder. I’m really excited to get this season started with a team that I think can do some damage.” It sure seems that the 16-year-old pivot is really looking forward to getting on the North American ice and prove his mettle.
