Growing up in Iceland, it was hard to get into hockey. We’re not exactly a hockey country, with not a lot of VHL talent floating around besides Grimm Jonsson. So, I turned to soccer first, playing in the youth system of Valúr before going into hockey as well. There’s a small league with 4 teams, and I played for the Bjorninn Junior A team until the age of 14. I’ll be the first to admit, I never really got into the sport fully until I was 13. I played it for fun, nonchalantly, with no real care and a poor attitude. That all changed when Arnor Sigurdsson became the coach. I knew who he was because he’d played in the VHL for a couple seasons as an Icelander, which was rare for someone from our country. He’d just retired and decided to start coaching, and he was quickly named coach of my team. The first practice was hell for me because he made us work, especially me, as I was never the hardest worker. That’s when I realized that I had to start going 110%. Otherwise, I wouldn’t get played and my fledgling career would be over before it really began. Once I did put in the work, I realized that I was a damn fine player. I was a good skater despite being short, and I scored A LOT. In fact, in a 40 game season, I scored 100 points (mostly goals). Arnor was a huge influence on me, and still is. So at 14, when I decided that I wanted to test my luck in a more established league after winning a gold medal with the Iceland U17 team, Arnor put in a call to his old Swedish team, Skelleftea. I flew over to try out, made the U20 team, and played 30 games in the SuperElit, scoring 12 goals and tallying up a total of 19 points. The next season I made the jump forward, scoring over a point per game in the SuperElit with the U20 team before skating in 12 SHL games, scoring 6 points. Playing in Sweden was great for me. I got to play against high-quality opposition and it really taught me that I needed to use my size to my advantage by gliding past taller defenders. After that season, I decided it was time to come to North America and play in the VHL. It always alluded me to try my luck against the best junior players in the world, so I declared the day of the draft. To my surprise, I was chosen 24th by the Ottawa Lynx, where Arnor had played before. I can’t wait to start my first season with the Lynx and progress my career.

Everyone remembers Arnor Sigurdsson, right? A 9th overall pick by Riga who scored prolifically in the juniors, including a point per game season with the Yukon Rush in S65, Sigurdsson failed to make the jump to the VHL, scoring 67 points across 3 VHL seasons. Arnie, as he's known back in his home country, had just lost his passion. "I wasn't enjoying myself out there anymore, so I retired. I know I was only 21, but I didn't see myself playing anymore." So he moved back to Iceland to coach. Now, Iceland has been a big country on the VHL scene despite being a small nation, boasting a Hall of Famer in Grimm Jonsson as well as current stars Wolf Stansson Jr., Sigard Gunnar, and Bjorn Scoringsonn. Sigurdsson was once seen as the best Iceland had to offer, but he's handing it over to a new prospect that he found while coaching in Iceland: Richard "Big Dick" Penisson. Despite the unfortunate name (and being 5'9"), Penisson is one of the best scorers Iceland has ever produced. "I truly believe Richard is going to be a point-per-game scorer in the VHL one day. The kid's got a fantastic shot that he utilises quite well. He's a fast skater with an eye for goal, and he's a great leader. I coached his Junior A team and he led us to the World Finals, where we beat the Swedes in the gold medal game." Penisson moved to Sweden the next year, making his debut for Skelleftea, Sigurdsson's old SHL club, as a 15-year-old. "Arnor had put a good word in, and I tried out and made the team. They stuck me straight in and I just tried to play my game." Penisson would play in 12 games, scoring 2 goals and assisting 4 for 6 points. He also played in the SuperElit with Skelleftea's U20 team, scoring 60 points in 40 games. But playing in Sweden, despite being a new challenge, wasn't enough for the young Icelander. "Arnor is really close with my family, as we're from the same town. He told me about the VHL, and how he'd made it. I knew then and there that I wanted to come over to North America and try myself there." So, despite declaring late, Penisson will come over to the VHLM and try his luck. "I'm really excited to make the jump to North America. It's going to be fun, that's for sure!" When asked if he wanted any team in particular to draft him, Penisson stayed open. "I really don't care where I play. All I know is that I want TO play. I know Ottawa and Yukon are both top-tier organizations, and they're high on my list, but Philadelphia also intrigues me. There's a lot of franchises, so I really don't care." When asked about his style of play, Penisson simply replied, "I score. I can do some stickhandling, I'm fairly strong, and I can hit if needed, but all I like to do is score. No doubt about it. Not a passer, probably will never be one. I just love to score." Watch out for Big Dick, cause he'll score on you any day.

1. By some weird voodoo magic we're #1 in the standings. How long do we have until we get hit with the good ol' STHS curse? Simon T is a fickle beast. Our time will come one day. 2. How do you feel about our current situation at goalie? How does it compare to the rest of the league? best in da leeg 3. Calgary netminder Brick Wahl has earned 23 penalty minutes so far. What's his deal? too aggro 4. A few currently-active players (Thompson, Bailey, Davis, Palo) have been at the top of the points board for a while. Who's the young player that will take over for them when they retire? hhh 5. Lance Flowers has a pretty compelling argument for RotY so far. Will he get shown up by someone else, or is this our award-winner? yes 6. A recent forum trend has been the count to 1,000 thread. What's your conspiracy theory about its end goal? yes 7. Even with 4 teams in the playoffs, the EU Conference is easily 5 teams deep (we'll get there, Prague). In your opinion, who gets left out? Malmo 8. The NA Conference still has a very young Seattle team at its helm. Is this the future of the VHL? maybe 9. Is Toronto's competitive window closed? yes 10. What does Davos need to do to become a frontrunner? not suck

1. Seattle has a pretty commanding 11-3-1 record right now. How are they doing it with just one player over 700 TPE? teamwork 2. At 9-5-1, we're already a few points out of the lead - what's it going to take to right the course? We all need to get our heads out of our asses and produce 3. Toronto actually has one, single draft pick left over the next two seasons. Why haven't they traded it away yet? because they want one solitary prospect 4. After being controversially voted in for MVP over Podrick Cast, Rauno Palo is leading the league in points again - this time without Beau Louth at the head. Is he the real deal? Yes 5. Sven Hitz already has 72 hits and 43 shots blocked -- just about equaling his S67 totals just 15 games into the season. Is he in the conversation for DPotY this season? yeah but I’m gonna outhit his ass 6. Our old teammate Mikko Aaltonen currently leads the league in Power Play Goals with 6, second in overall goals with 12, and is the only player with 2 hat tricks right now. Any words for him? i miss you Mikko pls come back 7. What's the plan for hazing introducing our S68 draftees to the team when they're brought up next season? Any traditions? I’m gonna make them do my laundry and also they’ll be my practice dummies for hitting during practice 8. How long do you think it'll take for the Dragons and Phantoms to become competitive? long time 9. Dogs or cats (or birds or lizards or...)? im allergic 10. As we get older, we sometimes get out of the loop with popular trends. What's something about the youngins that you just don't understand? vsco girls (and I oop sksksksksksksks)
