Shaka reacted to diamond_ace in Ottawa: a tale of two teams
The Ottawa Lynx have been up and down this season, although mostly down. Having finished last in the standings, Ottawa had to face Saskatoon in the wild card round for a chance to get into the proper playoffs, and based on the regular season, Ottawa would be expected to lose. However, this is a team whose entire roster was essentially overhauled at the deadline and later, except for two key players (Ambrose Charizard and Arbin Asipi). The Vilhjalmsson triplets, who were most of the team before the deadline, were sent to Vegas for a handful of journeyman players, the best of which is Corey Guimond although Mikka Toivonen has had a decent showing as well. One of the players who'd been playing defense for Ottawa, Zach Weise, went to Yukon for a draft pick. Then, after the deadline, it's as though the floodgates opened. New rookies kept coming to Ottawa for a healthy dose of playing time (although it took Marvin Harding some time to appear on the eligible roster). Samuel Gate gave the team a real defenseman to rely on, and Mikhail Vega and Marvin Harding filled out a line alongside Charizard, allowing Guimond and Toivonen (along with Longrod von Danglecoch, one of the original Lynx from the beginning of the season) to slide down the lines a bit and give the team depth. A team devoid of players suddenly wasn't, and with the filling of the roster came a sense of the unknown. No one could really be sure what this team would do in the playoffs. The wild card round ended pretty favorably for Ottawa as they took out Saskatoon in two straight games. Next up is Yukon, the team that won the regular season, and presumably that's a bridge too far for this team no matter how revamped they are - or is it?

    I'm Never Leave America

" I'm never leave America" shouts Jonas Vilhjálmsson before sneaking into a dark room near the back of Angel Ladies , a brothel on the outskirts of Las Vegas where he calls home for what is sure to be a short time. He's visited Angel's twice since arriving in Nevada via trade to the Las Vegas Aces of the VHLM last month, but he frequents the brothels that surround Las Vegas "often" say his brothers Johannes and Jakub - and it's becoming a problem. Towering over the other patrons, you'd never guess that the 6'8 Icelander wasn't yet 21 years old, until you looked at his bank account. "He's quite literally running through his entire salary, but it's what he wants to do" explains family friend Johan Yasir who has taken the trip from Ottowa, where the triplets were first signed to play in this years VHLM season. "He says he's fallen in love with American women."

The enamored young forward has looked sharp on the ice as of late, sitting 10th in the VHLM in goals with 26 despite a slow start to what will be his, and all of the Vilhjálmsson's, only year in the VHL Minors according to some league scouts. "We can't tell if he's playing well in spite of this unhealthy habit or, honestly, if that's what's driving him." said Yasir. "So we haven't tried to put a stop to it. I don't think we could if we tried."

    My trivia questions.

Who scored the 50th Continental Cup Winning Goal in VHL history?
    Zach Parechkin

Didn't know the Continental Cup was the VHL Title. Thought, for some reason first, it was the NA title. And so double mistakenly first saw Game 5 of that series, in which case a bot RW won it for the Meute lol. That's fun. Then saw Toronto actually won that series in Game 6 by Faux in overtime. Then realized the Cont Cup is the VHL Title game, so went and saw how that one ended. Game 7 double overtime. So this question took me on a journey learning how TOR won that S50 Title. I think that's exactly how you want trivia to go as a league, right? Kinda got me more interested in this place in just that journey.

Through Season 50, which member held the record for most medals in World Cup history?
    Victor

Had to dig for that one too, as the index only goes to S48. Wasn't too difficult, though it involved searching Victor and Sheriff's player to see which won also won one this year as they were tied going into S50's games.

My first two weeks in Ottawa have been a whirlwind. The players are bigger (not bigger than me), the pace is higher (ok, that's something I need to work on) and the coaches are nicer. Yes, nicer. I don't mean that in a way meant to upset people back home in Iceland. But back there it's much more rigid. Warm-ups together. Coach says what to do. Skating drills. Coach says what to do. Passing drills. You get the idea. Here it's more loose. We do some structured drills, but there are a lot of scrimmages. Plenty of room for being creative. Coaches here don't get mad when you miss a pass. They get mad when you don't try to make plays. Even then, when I say "get mad", I mean that they clap at you and tell you to play with confidence. That's new. Back home, it's about not making mistakes. Clean, safe passes, get back and check. Don't leave the zone early. I think it's doing a lot for me to be able to play creatively. I know that most people look at my brothers and I and say "big, slow, dumb." We want to play fast hockey. Make intelligent plays. Get on highlight reels. Hockey over here really is more expressive. I think that you lose something when you restrict yourself to always making the safe play. We're at the bottom of the standings now. But no matter how this season goes, I think I made the right call coming over. I'm growing as a player in a way I'm not sure I could back home.

    1. Don't give away secret! Ref in this country haven't figured out yet. In Iceland, they all told each other to watch out for it.

    2. Not yet. But Jonas probably would spoil it, he always act like clown with girls.

    3. I put on socks left, then right. Always. Sometimes Jakub try to tell me I did it backward just to fuck with me. Asshole.

    4. One time Jakub and I left Jonas with a big bar tab in local bar. We went back next night, owner tells us that we owe him money- Jonas claimed he didn't drink anything that night and that it was only Jakub and I. Owner believes him because bartender tell him, Jonas never ordered anything. Bastard kept making us go up and order. Now we know why. We pay tab. Find out later, Jonas paid tab already, asked owner to mess with us. Owner gives money to Jonas that we pay owner. So Jonas ends up getting to drink for free. Such a little baby, was harmless joke.

Are you happy with wins against Seattle? After all, your priority is taking the highest pick possible.
The lottery has a 25% chance for the first overall pick for the bottom 4 teams and we will be one of them so I like beating any teams we can but right now especially the number one contender.

Are you confident your team will compete next season?
I'm pretty sure we will be a playoff team next year, if we miss the playoffs next season it will be the last time. I think Helsinki and Toronto are about to take a step back and Riga is aging as well.

Kinkaid is on fire so far. Can he take the most improved player award?
If he keeps playing like this I'd say it should be easy for him to take it. I never thought when I convinced him to join us in S58 he'd turn into such a great player for us.

Do you hope Corco will come back to continue with Boner?
His player is playing so great that I'd love for him to come back here and continue with us. I really think this team will be special and having him back would be key for us.

Which player could be drafted by you if Calgary won't win the #1 OV pick?
I could use another solid defender with Johnsson leaving so Roux, Pilgrim or Finsceal would all be good options but I'm also really excited to see @Shaka @MWHazard @Týr join here and I'd be stupid not to try and land at least one of them.

This has been a long, long time coming. Finally, for the first time in 7 years, I believe I have the opportunity to take part in this community with a player I can update consistently without issue. And let me tell you, I couldn't be more excited. As some of you may know, I have tried to near exhaustion to create players in the past only to come to the same realization every time. I don't know this sport enough to feel comfortable writing about it and I don't have the time to put into being worth a damn as a player. Finally, thanks to @Beketov and all of you who helped usher in the new Welfare system, both of those concerns have been resolved and there is nothing stopping me from finally getting to experience the longest running simulation league in our growing sim community.

I don't expect to be a major player in this league. In fact, none of my players in the SBA or EFL are major players in that league. The player side of these leagues often comes after the community aspect to me. At the SBA, I enjoy leading new members and recreates into their new careers by running the Duke Blue Devil's. In the EFL, I enjoy trying to see a football sim FINALLY succeed. In both, it's the community that drives me and not the success of my player. So do I expect to be a HOF career? I've never had one, I'll likely never have one. But I do expect to become a decent part of the community and finally get to ride a player that I'm excited about through the entirety of his career.
