fonziGG reacted to Sjin in Marlins S88 Review
Starting the Season Marlins only had 2 players on the roster @McGriddy10 who later became our AGM and none other than Goat @fonziGG as we didn't have many picks from selling our future assets for success in S86 and S87 where we were able to successfully win our first Founder's Cup for the franchise.

I then later returned to the squad from free agency. We were then able to add 3 more players to the roster through waivers who proved to extremely valuable assets as the season played out that included @Fradin99, @Will3 and @Marty B all doing fantastic jobs earning TPE as the season progressed. Fradin will now pass the VHLM without even being drafted and the same may also be true for Scuba showing how committed they both were to earning! Throughout the season we then added a couple more waiver claims including @Keegan Gamble, @Elvis and @Imthereforyou who were also integral to the success of the team, especially Keegan Gamble who was a great locker room guy. Additionally adding @CoolLuigiBro14 to our forward group rounding us off with 6 forwards. This team proved deadly where by the trade deadline we were sitting in close contention for the Prime Minister's cup with Mexico City Kings and Mississauga Hounds who were leaps and bounds ahead of the competition. We were able to make 2 more additions to after the trade deadline including @jhatty8 and @Moon who were also very important rounding out the regular season and going into the post season.

Whilst we unfortunately fell short this season unable to win any hardware losing to Mexico City King in game 6 and being eliminated from the post season. We need to acknowledge the great success this team has had despite it's humble beginnings at the start of the season everyone, even myself expected the team to be rebuilding but against all odds we put together a true cup contending team! So we have to thank @Arce and @McGriddy10 for their fantastic job in managing the team this season making some fantastic signings and keeping the team competitive when everyone else though it was impossible.

It was a truly incredible season the locker room was always electric and a great atmosphere to be a part of I'll be a shame to see all these fantastic team mates move on to different leagues and new teams, hopefully we're able to bring as many of them back as possible and keep this amazing atmosphere in San Diego! I look forward for what the future holds for the San Diego Marlins there's definitely a lot more to come from this team!

Olivier Gauthier here today and I was just thinking. I am the OG. I'm from Quebec, I love hockey and I'm in love with the coa coa. I am the OG. The Original Gangsta. THE Olivier Gauthier or as @Fradin99 calls me, Gaut.

Usually, I'm used to the nickname, Gauter but I'll take Gaut. Makes me sound like Goat and I like to eat Goat on occasion. On a more serious note, the Marlins have been fucking insanely brilliant. I love it so much. Every player has grown a hair on their nut and balled the fuck up. We brought intensity, energy, and urgency in every single shift. The boys deserve the well-due rest and charge.

We are already mentally preparing for our next opponent. Whoever the fuck that is? I think it's Mexico City or some shit. They probably suck ass. Between an MVP-performing player in Sjin, a rock star defender in Fradin, and a dude who is ok in net like me. I think we could make some noise during these playoffs. I also love watching playoff hockey so we've all been scouting these teams before and after games.

We're already on to the next opponent and we're laser-focused, as I've been saying. I expect some teams to make these playoffs exciting and fun. We know the next round is gonna be hard and we're not going to take any team easily. We need to focus and we need to focus hard. It's time we dominate for San Diego and the fans.

Here is an interview Olivier Gauthier did at the end of the season. Olivier was very honest in this interview and really shared the details behind his season and his play. Especially the background work that goes into having a strong season as a goalie in the VHLM. Olivier was also a class act as an athlete and as a human being. He was suggesting going even more in-depth when he absolutely did not need to do that at all. We're so grateful to have had such an amazing experience with him. We wish him nothing but the absolute best in the playoffs and honestly, I will be rooting for him and the Marlins to win it all.

I: You've been playing at an incredibly high level this season - what do you attribute your success to?

OG: Mostly my teammates and coaches. My teammates have been willing to work extra hard with me by staying back on goalie sessions. The coaching staff has been hard-working as ever and has helped me more than I can even imagine. The Prague GM has mentioned a few times that there's a solid shot that if I keep this momentum up, I could end up becoming the backup up there as I've shown the right tools. The training camp in Prague has shown me that they're just as hard-working and knowledgeable as the coaching staff in San Diego.

I: How do you stay focused and maintain your composure during high-pressure situations, such as penalty kills or crucial games?

OG: I train for moments like this. Between high-pressure training and team bonding sessions where we share what we need from each other in those moments... I think I'm covered in that regard. To go a little more in-depth about it, I remind myself that I'm the best god damn goalie in the VHLM. I'm here to prove myself in those big moments. Those are career-defining, player-defining, and outcome-defining. I also remind myself daily that I want to be remembered for my career and be a role model for future generations.

I: Can you describe your pre-game routine, and how it contributes to your performance on the ice?

OG:  I mainly make sure the night before I had a good high-carb meal. On the day of, I wake up and make sure I get a quick and light workout in. Something to get my blood flowing. I also make sure I take a walk in the sun and get around 30-40 minutes of sun exposure in the morning. Once I get into the facility, I make sure I put some good music on and I get into my zone. I make sure I have a meal and I get a quick stretch in. Before I start dressing for the game, I make sure I get some mental work in with music and I get into the zone.

I: How do you analyze and prepare for opposing players and their tendencies, both as individuals and as a team?

OG: I primarily don't. My team definitely does a lot of video work to see how to not be fooled mid-game. I personally, do not do that at all. The only training I do when it comes to player tendencies is penalty shots. It's good to know what every player has in their toolbox. If they fool me, it's because they did something brand new. Sometimes, the boys will run drills and see how we react to certain players doing certain things. We make sure that teams also have to adjust to our play, primarily. We want to be so dominating as a team that they need to adjust to us. This has worked for us this season and we've made fast teams look slow and big teams look small.

I: You've been playing in the league for 2 seasons now - how has your approach to the game evolved over time?

OG: At first, I was a complete moron. I thought I could totally depend on my own talent and skill. Absolutely not the case by any means. I would wake up late, do 0 preparation and just step onto the ice. Over the first season, I started being advised on how to approach game days and immediately I would see major steps forward to see huge gains. Eventually, I started getting some advice from the Huberman Labs podcast and introduced those things into my life and they have made some HUGE progressions for me and it's why this season has been such a huge one for me.

I: What kind of feedback do you look for from your coaches and teammates, and how does that feedback help you improve your game?

OG: Truthfully, I really want to know what they think I did wrong and why. I love having an open dialogue with my teammates and coaches, primarily because I want them to understand why I made that decision. Maybe it's something I did wrong and maybe it's something they did wrong. Ultimately, we communicate positively and know that ultimately we just want to win the friggin game. We're here to win. Not to lose and if all of our intentions align, obviously, we are here to improve each other to victories.

I: Looking ahead, what are your goals for the rest of the season, and how do you plan to achieve them?

OG: I'm here to win games. I'm here to put up one of the best goaltending performances the league has ever seen and I'm here to win a cup. If any athlete tells you otherwise, they're wrong. Extremely wrong or they're insanely delusional. Why would you become an athlete if you're not going to compete? My short-term goals align with me this season in order to take steps for a larger goal in general. I want to play in the VHL. I want to become one of the best goaltenders in this generation. Thats some hefty goals. In order for me to get there, I need to be diligent. Which I have been.

fonziGG reacted to Fradin99 in San Diego's Three Headed Monster
The San Diego Marlins are actively in a vicious three way fight for the top seed in the VHLM and the Prime Minister's Cup alongside the Mississauga Hounds and the Mexico City Kings. We will let other qualified writers speak on the other two teams' star players and their playoff chances. Today we will be highlighting the three players who are above and beyond the rest on a very strong Marlins roster who will give their team the edge over the rest for the Prime Minister's and Founder's cups.

@Mint - Sjin is the first line Center and the most complete player on the team. A Bentz trophy Candidate, Sjin leads the league in goals with 41 on the year so far and is two points shy of leading the league in points. With a +46 for the year so far and spearheading the top penalty kill in the league, it would be hard to argue any player in the M is more built for the playoffs than the Marlins' Captain. Not to mention this will be the fourth consecutive VHLM playoff appearance for the S86 champion. This is a player who has a shot at the Ethan Osborne, Alexander Chershenko, and Matt Bentz trophies respectively. This outstanding performance could very well earn him the Mitch Higgins MVP trophy should he win even two of the three previously mentioned.

@McGriddy10 - Brad Marchand will be entering his second consecutive playoff appearance in his second year within the show. Marchand greatly improved is offensive production since the previous year. (S87 11G 17A 28P) Now sits at 39G 37A for 76P in 66 games on the season. Reducing his time in the box from 36 PIM to 22, Marchand has become an offensive cornerstone for the team's second line at only two goals shy of the league lead, which again so happens to be another Marlins' player. Averaging two hits per game, Marchand has come into his own. And if he keeps to his namesake, we'll certainly have some borderline antics in at least one of the coming playoff series.

@fonziGG - Olivier Gauthier has blossomed this year into a full fledged Benoit Devereux caliber goaltender. With 45 wins in 66 games holding a .926 save percentage, teams can fully expect to be robbed of surefire goals by an absolute wall in-between the pipes. Gauthier has set the Marlins' record for both wins and shutouts during this run and could still pass the 50 win mark on the season. With a now rounded out blue line in front of him his numbers should greatly improve from last year's .897 save percentage in the S87 playoffs.

These three specifically were highlighted due to their experience and regular season play. It should come to no surprise to anyone who has watched the Marlins' games this year, and it is expected their success and contribution should continue in the post season. Should the Marlins win S88 you will absolutely see these three in contention for the Skylar Rift trophy amongst the other hardware this team is expected to collect. Regardless of where these players end their career seasons, Marlins GM @Arce should be nothing but proud for his hand in developing this team.

    1.  Philly's been a middling team in the M as of the last week or two. Slowing down where some of the other teams are pulling far ahead. But I mostly chalk this up to the engine not being a big fan of the city. Their roster is strong, and I think their blue line will come through for them come playoffs.
    2. Bonfires. I love gathering my friends as the sun sets and falling down as the flames rise up.
    3. It's my first season for my first player in my first sim league. I think he's done better than I expected and has fit in really well with this team.
    4. Maybe a little more fighting majors and a little less roughing minors. Be a little more team friendly if I'm going to the box.
    5. Well unless @fonziGG counts, it'd have to be Rachel Weisz. I loved the Mummy movies growing up.
    6. Kevan Miller was my favorite Bruin growing up. A player who didn't shy from playing physical and came in undrafted to help his team, much like how I have tried to emulate with the Marlins. Hence why I took his number!

San Diego has been such a great city to be placed in during my development years. I really enjoyed playing for the Marlins these past 2 seasons. I hope I'm able to replicate my success here this season in wherever I do end up playing for the foreseeable future. Many people are talking about how I'm the best goalie in the VHLM but I don't let that type of noise get to me at all. I'm here to win games, I'm here to win a cup. I'm competitive and I want trophies. I don't care about my individual stats compared to my team's overall performance. Like yeah, reading my stats is nice but did we win the game? I could post a .987 but did we have a successful season? Those are the important things to me, overall.

We're first in the west, we're playing hard and we're a very tough team to defeat. These are things I'm proud we can achieve as a roster this season. Our forecheck is relentless and world-class in a way, due to our press. Reminds me of watching Liverpool in the premier league except, in hockey. We attack with menace, we're prepared to force teams into tight situations and make quick decisions. Whenever and if ever a team does break this press, I'm there to clean up the mess. This is my brand of hockey, and I can see that Prague is doing the same thing in the VHL, which excites me as it makes my job much easier as a goalie.

The coaching staff in San Diego are world-class. @Arce has been all over my training, making sure I'm getting individual practice before and after each team session. He's forcing me to think of every situation before it even arrives and honestly, that's the best type of coaching that you can ask for. I'd prefer to be prepared with a decision made already than having to make a decision. If you already know what you're going to do, and trust your teammates to be there no matter what, it makes me as the player feel more comfortable just making an action and knowing we're going to play it our right. The team is extremely well-coached to that point as if everything is well rehearsed in a way and we're in a play. It makes us hard to beat.

I feel ready to take the next step. I'm completely prepared for next season and while I know that, I'm still extremely focused on finishing this season with a trophy with San Diego. I'm focused for the playoffs, I'm prepared for anything to go our way. I expect us to go in hard for a playoff push. The players we have are all already prepared to go into a playoff series and are totally prepared for what could come. I'm excited and I'm mentally prepared to face anyone. I know we have the type of team to beat anyone as well. Time for us Marlins to prove ourselves.

*This is Marcus Svedberg, reporting from sunny Las Vegas, with an update on, you guessed it, the Las Vegas Aces of the VHLM!"

Hello again! It's been a while since I sat down in front of this desk and wrote a media spot on a player or team in the wonderful VHL, so I figured what better time to do that than now! Today, we're gonna be looking at the Las Vegas Aces of the VHLM, and doing a bit of a rundown of their year as the regular season draws ever closer to the playoffs. As things stand, the season could be going a lot better on paper, but there is a conversation to be had about Las Vegas potentially being a dark horse candidate for a deep run in the S88 playoffs. As of writing this, Las Vegas sits in 4th place in the Western Conference with a record of 24-27-9. Let's take a deep dive into the team and assess the pros and cons going into the postseason.

A quick look at team scoring and you can tell immediately that this roster is made for scoring. 6 players are at least a point per game, with Assistant Captain RJMW III @RJMWleading the way with 70 points (34g, 36a) in 60 games. Winger and 6'8" behemoth Jeremia Barbaslov @Je Barbaslov and defenseman Leo Lewkowicz @BeanSobie are both rapidly approaching 50 assists each, with 22 goals & 10 goals respectively to scratch as well! Center @Taro TsujimotoTarro Tsujimoto rounds out the 50 point scorers with 23 goals and 34 assists. Rounding out the high end production with the likes of Dank Turtle @DankTurtle & Aces legend Juan Ceson @dylanjj37who are both also putting up very respectable and strong efforts in the lineup too, it makes you wonder why a team of this offensive caliber is struggling to keep its head above water in the playoff hunt. It becomes more apparent, however, as you dig deeper into what's making the team click and the poor luck they've had in their quest for another Cup.

Scheduling is always a concern for teams that are considered fringe playoff teams, and the competition this year has been heavy for Las Vegas. When the likes of the Mexico City Kings or San Diego Marlins (who are also on a 7 game winning streak at the moment!) come into town, it's gonna make your life a little bit harder. Given that they're also in the same conference, you can almost guarantee that should Las Vegas keep their head above water and make the playoffs, they have their work cut out for them and THEN some in the top dog competition that is the VHLM these coming playoffs. And their troubles don't end there, unfortunately. Sitting in the fourth to last place, you'd think that they are completely shot and that they only have a handful of players keeping it alive, right? You then see the team scoring and realize that this team is actually one of the better offensive teams in the entire VHLM, outscoring the likes of the Houston Bulls by 15 goals despite being 10 points behind them in the standings. So what's holding this team back you might be wondering?

It's the Achilles heel of any professional hockey team. Shaky goaltending. This, mind you, is not a flaming of the goaltenders and casting all blame on them. Don't get me wrong, hockey is a team sport and it's a team that makes or breaks a good season. When you look at the facts, however, you start to see why this could be a source of many problems for Las Vegas going into the postseason, and even beyond. Looking at the goaltending of the teams at the top of the league, it becomes very apparent what a good team, and even great teams rely on for their success day in and day out. Goaltending. Not just your market value beer leaguer either, no, we're talking standing on their head, making diving saves at the buzzer, brick wall goaltending. When you're facing an elite tendy like Jonny Elgar @Jonny or Ross Glagau @Zetterberg who are putting up 38 and 36 win seasons, with a .913 sv% & 2.48 GAA or .915 sv% & 2.48 GAA respectively, you're gonna have a real hard time. Then you have to face goalies the likes of Olivier Gauthier @fonziGG putting up an absolutely mind bending 41 wins with a .927 SV% & 2.15 GAA, you're gonna have a really bad time.

Looking inwards towards the Aces goaltending, and sadly you don't get that same level of production. Max Schuett @Schutte put up a decent record of 13-10-5, but the numbers that being 0.894 sv% and a 3.06 GAA, it was not what you were hoping for in a rookie goalie, and could possibly been what contributed to Max being released from their contract in the same season. Linden Moore @orbit has since taken the reigns and is doing his best to revive a dragging team behind him. This being his rookie season though, production hasn't been up to par of the rest of the league with a 11-17-3 record being posted since being signed to his rookie deal. An 0.886 sv% and 3.66 GAA to go along isn't earth shattering either, but one can hope that should Linden choose to return to Las Vegas, hopefully he can continue to build his game and become one of those highly touted goalies in the league. Until then though, the Aces struggle. Moving on past that though, let's end on a happier note and something the Aces can look forward to in the coming future.

Trade deadline is an exciting time for VHLM GM's as new players come into the fold and are picked up by the team to play the last few games of the season. This year was no different for the Aces as they went out and acquired a few players to bolster their roster hopefully for the foreseeable future. First off, we have Jack Foster @0kmemie who's having a great start to his VHLM career. 12 points, 5 goals and 7 helpers in 15 games is a very strong start, and Vegas adds yet another strong center to their team to stack that offense. They also went out and grabbed Nose Nacho Montana @Nose Nacho Montana, who's only played two games so far. We'll definitely keep an eye out on them though as their career is looking to be another strong future for Las Vegas. Rounding out the acquisitions for the Aces is Maxim Anisimov @McLovin. Maxim's only played 6 games in his own VHLM career, but has put up 6 points and a +5 (a stat in which he leads the team crazily enough.) Being projected to be VHL drafted in S90, Maxim has a long, long time to develop his game in the minors and looks to be aiming for playing his entire minor league career with Las Vegas. Whether they draft him is still to be determined, but with a strong couple of futures in their hands, so long as the Aces figure out what to do in net scouts are expecting them to come out absolutely swinging for S89. What happens this season though is very much in their own hands, however, so all we can do now is wait and see.

There are some teams from the past that I think would kill teams today, to be honest. I was thinking about it when I read the theme week post and thought, hey! This sounds like a fun idea to write about. I'd love to see how some of these teams fared against these modern teams. I'm not going to make any legitimate arguments about whether one will win or not and I sure as hell am not going to research this much. Why do you ask? Because I honestly am doing this for the TPE and I could not give a fuck. These teams are going destroy today's teams. This is also in no specific order.

    1. The Seattle Bears S68
Well, let's be clear. The reason this team is on this list is that they fucking dominated during one of the most dominating generations of VHL history. Rayz Funk was one of the best goalies in VHL history and the players on that roster are all-stars on their day. That team was dominating for so long and probably still is, to be honest. I haven't been following the VHL much but I'm pretty sure this roster could probably kick the asses of any current VHL team. In fact, they'd probably kill an all-star team of today's teams. Thats how good they are.

Yes, this was the second most dominant team in VHLs most dominant golden generation yada yada yada. This team was good. I was on this team as well. They were fire af. Honestly, I genuinely believe they would kill any team today and their all-star team too. I think Bek had the most dominating player on this team and probably carried us to a final but thats neither here nor there. We were good, did we win? I don't think we did. But even then, we'd kill a bunch of dudes from todays teams. Because we were big, strong and had a good young goalie with his dead glued to the ice. Standing there and shit.

    3. Vancouver Wolves (Right after I stopped GMing them)
Well, for obvious reasons. Nyko and I broke the fucking sim engine. We are here, with hybrid attributes, primarily due to @Nykonax, but I had a hand in it I'd like to say. Why? Because I drafted @Zetterberg and @MexicanCow123. That started all this fuckin nonsense. It was a fun team to GM, a fun time and honestly, I'd like to thank all three of them because if it weren't for them, I wouldn't be here rn typing this shit out. I'm sad Nyko isn't the GM of Vancouver anymore. I'm glad theres new attributes to stop the exploiting stuff from happening but I will gladly say that this roster probably would kill any team today. Honestly, in a street fight, this team would probably eat the VHL of todays all star team. For like a snack or something. Probably even shit them out before the third period ends. Thats how good this team was. Fuck yeah.
