I can't speak on behalf of the VHLM commies to say how exciting it is to have this event back but from the recruitment team, we are very happy to have another event for our developing members on top of the many we already have. This event featured a heated rivalry between the two M commissioner's @Gustav and @Spartan with their drafted teams. Many shots were thrown at each other such as during the live draft (which is on Spartan's twitch page below) Gus began every pick with "the only team that matters" and once the index came out Spartan without hesitation changed his team's email address to
    gustavsucks@davosneverwonanything.com
    and in response gustav put
    fuckspartan@fuckspartan.fuck.
All the live action such as the draft and sims can be found on Spartans twitch page HERE

Our second installment in our “Building a Contender” series features 2 teams that are currently on 2 very different paths. The first team we will cover was a bright spot and surprise team during S87 as the Riga Reign came out of nowhere to come up with an upset win in a wildcard series. Whereas the other team in this trade has certainly had its ups and downs recently The Vancouver Wolves resilience and recent success is very hard to ignore. In S85 these two teams come together in a blockbuster trade:

This trade has evolved quite a bit since it was made and to date, this is what it has turned into:

Just to provide some context on the above trade tree, here is what each colour means; Green = Still on team and playing; Light Blue = Prospect for team; Orange = Played and retired with team; Yellow = Played and was traded; Purple = Pick/Player appears elsewhere on the trade tree; Red = Never played for team and is current FA. Boxes are around the return of each trade.

We will start off with the Riga side of the tree as it is far more simplistic, In the initial trade Riga received two first round picks, the S86 LAS 1st and the S87 VAN 1st, both of these picks would be traded in the runup to the S86 draft.

The first piece to be moved was the S87 VAN 1st as Riga would trade it along with Phoebe Bridgers @PhoebeIsQueen, and their S87 2nd (was conditional) in exchange for Daniel Weaver @ThePerfectNut and a 2nd round pick in S87. Since the trade Weaver has been a big part of Riga’s offense as they have 75 goals and 108 assists for a total of 183 points in 193 games, including a very successful S87 which saw them produce 82 points. Currently Weaver has a player option after this season, and with Riga’s current position in the standings, we could see this trade tree grow a bit more in the coming days. With the S87 2nd they acquired, Riga drafted Stefan Norris @Elman Diablo, who is now inactive.

A few days later Riga made a trade to move up from the 5th (S86 LAS 1st) to the 4th overall pick in the S86 draft at the cost of an additional 4th. With the 4th overall pick Riga selected Sadie St. Louis @sadie, who is still on their roster to date and has produced well for the team with 41 goals and 51 assists for a total of 92 points in 121 games. Additionally St. Louis also made the S87 All-VHL rookie team following a great rookie season!

Now moving onto the Vancouver Wolves side of things, both Biggie Cheese @a_Ferk and Alexandre Leduc @Lemorse7 would play for Vancouver for 2 full seasons producing 156 and 166 points respectively. Most importantly though Both Cheese and Leduc played a major role in Vancouver’s S86 Continental Cup run as they would post a combined 47 points in the 22 games on route to the cup! Right after the championship celebrations, both players would be traded.

Biggie Cheese was traded to Warsaw along with a S88 4th round pick in exchange for the S88 WAR 1st and Vasile Lamb @dlamb. Lamb would never play a game for Vancouver as their rights would be traded to D.C. for a S87 DCD 3rd. The S87 DCD 3rd would then be traded with Vancouver's S88 3rd to Toronto for Jeremy Swayman @Agito. Swayman would play 9 games for Vancouver in S87 posting a 6-2-1 record with a 0.931 SV% and a 2.37 GAA before retiring early.

The S88 WAR 1st would be traded with Leduc and a S88 CHI 3rd to New York in exchange for the 4th overall pick in S87, a S89 NYA 2nd, and Hasbulla Magomedov @Motzaburger. We will cover the S87 4th overall pick side of things first here. The S87 4th overall pick was traded to Seattle for a S89 SEA 2nd and the 5th overall pick in S87, where Vancouver would select Oreo McFleury @JB123. McFleury is currently in their rookie season and has 16 points, 5 of which are goals in 48 games played.

Vancouver would then immediately trade the S89 SEA 2nd, alongwith their own S89 1st and 2nd to Helsinki for the 8th overall pick in S87 and Helsinki’s S89 3rd. With the 8th overall pick Vancouver selected Reese McFleury @Spaz. Reese’s time in Vancouver would be rather brief though as they would be traded prior to ever playing a VHL game as they would be sent to Malmo in exchange for Malmo’s S88 1st.

Following S87 Vancouver would trade Malmo’s S88 1st in an effort to move up the draft board as they would trade it along with Sergey Preobrazhensky @Bulduray_1 to Riga for their S88 1st. Riga’s S88 1st would then be flipped just 4 days later along with the S89 HSK 3rd, S90 DAV 1st, and S90 TOR 2nd in exchange for Helsinki’s S88 1st, which was the 2nd overall pick. With this pick Vancouver drafted FISTED ANALLY BY A CIRCUS MONKEY Analfist @STZ. Analfist is having an alright rookie season with 6 goals and 7 assists for 13 points in 48 games played.

Now moving way back to Vancouver trading away Leduc, as the other two pisces they received in that trade would also be traded as Hasbulla Magomedov (who never played a game for Vancouver) and the S89 NYA 2nd would be traded to Toronto for Toronto’s S89 3rd. A season later Vancouver would trade Toronto’s S89 3rd back to them along with Tater Tottingham @Trunkxolotl for Sting Chameleon @Hybrid1486 and the previously mentioned S90 TOR 2nd. Sting Chameleon would be traded before playing a game for the Wolves.

Just before the start of S88, Vancouver would take part in a massive 3-way trade with D.C. and Los Angeles, as they would send out Sting Chameleon, Nezuko @Baozi, Robert Wilk @Tomat0, and their own S90 1st for Ryuji Sakamoto @der meister and a S90 LAS 2nd. Sakamoto’s time in Vancouver would be pretty interesting as they would only score 1 goal and add 11 assists for 12 points in 20 games played before being traded to Helsinki.

The Sakamoto trade to Helsinki would set off an interesting series of events as that initial trade was simply Sakamoto to Helsinki for Marcel Janser @Morcar80 and the S89 RIG 2nd. However, Janser would never play a game for Vancouver as he would be traded almost immediately after being acquired. Janser was traded to London for Branden Skuin @DrunkMonkey23 and the S89 DAV 2nd.

Skuin would play in 12 games for Vancouver before being traded themselves, in those 12 games Skuin had 1 goal and 3 assists for a total of 4 points. The trade was Skuin and the S89 DAV 2nd that he was acquired with to Toronto in exchange for veteran forward Kyle Peace @Peace. To date Peace has produced well for Vancouver with 7 goals and 6 assists for a total of 13 points in 16 games.

This trade tree is one that I found very interesting with both teams having their ups and downs since the trade was made. Riga was the big surprise team of S87, and Vancouver took the cup home only 2 seasons ago and has done an incredible job of building one of the top teams on paper for S88.

    1.  Where do you think our teams biggest weak spot is? I'm not going to lie to you, your goaltending looks weak.
    2.  What do you think makes a good VHLM team? Activity makes a good VHLM team.
    3.  What are your goals for your player, team success, individual accolades, both, Hall of Fame? I won cups with my first player, I want HOF with this one.
    4.  What do you think of the Houston Bulls logo? It's pretty average in my opinion. A lot of the older VHL and VHLM logos could use a revamp.
    5.  Are you or your player a smack talker? Not really.
    6.  What do you think of all the talk of AI generated art and media? I think it's all a myth, there's definitely nobody on Warsaw that has got in trouble for that.
