Probably fair placement, but I'm excited to see how we can do not playing the 1st, 3rd and 6th team on your list exclusively! Great article! -

What is Landon Wolanin? The only natural winger on the Calgary Wranglers has had a difficult time maintaining consistent offensive output so far in his career, having several notable stretches without goals, and sometimes even points in general. He has played with some of the best in the game. He has trained as hard as possible, sitting as the 31st highest TPA forward in the VHL. Spread over 16 teams, that leaves him as most team’s 2nd or 3rd best forward. If that is the case then he has truly disappointed expectations so far. What is the goal for Landon Wolanin? Landon was meant to be digging in the corners, breaking up passes in transition and getting to the dirty areas to work for goals. He is not a sniper or a playmaker by any means and has never had a need to be a physical presence. He has always been able to rely on his superior stickwork, IQ and discipline. His skating has fallen behind a bit compared to his peers, and perhaps the play is simply moving around him too quickly now to be effective consistently. He has been focusing on his offensive technique specifically over the last few weeks, and his skating has fallen to the wayside. Even STHS seems rather disappointed in Landon’s development. He was handed a 71 overall, the second lowest forward rating on the Wranglers, behind only the rookie Sax Justice. It sounds as though STHS would encourage Wolanin to round out his development sooner rather than later in order to be rewarded at a higher level.

The Calgary Wranglers have been doing pretty well. Worse than we expected, but about as well as everyone else expected. STHS has us 5th on the power rankings, maintaining that position from the last time around. We’ve been flying on offence recently, but definitely letting in a few too many goals in the process. As we continue to train we should see less pucks hitting the back of our net. We have been beating the teams we need to beat, and losing to the teams that it makes sense to lose to, but we will need to learn to beat the top teams in order to achieve our championship goals. We have a tough stretch of games ahead of us, facing a lot of other hopeful contenders over the stretch. A lot of great teams on paper have gotten off to sub-par starts so far this season, and we have to watch out that we don’t spark their return to form. With almost everyone on the team now firing on all cylinders we just need to maintain our form and watch the points rack up. The Marlins are hard to judge at this point. Going into their 11th and final game against Miami today, and having only played 3 teams so far this season, sitting in 4th in the conference is a good place to be after 20 games. We are just below .500 and are sitting at a not-so-great -11 goal differential. There is definitely a lot to like though, including having some success as of late against the reigning champion Las Vegas Aces. We start playing our 4th – 9th teams starting in a few days, and I assume other teams will also be having this happen, so we should begin to see how the teams actually fall. It will really be a battle in our Western Conference to make the playoffs, as there are 5 teams all deserving of a spot. With Mississauga dropping their first 20 games the East should be all but set, at least team-wise. We have been rather on-and-off as a team, either having dominant performances or really having nothing to show on any given night. As we continue to get a trickle of new waiver players into the lineup, we will look to reduce the amount of time bots are playing, and hopefully have a bit more consistency from game-to-game. It has definitely begun to feel as though the weeks are getting longer. I mean I haven’t had to do a Media Spot in 4 weeks or something but man it feels like so much time between submitting tasks. I’m doing less week to week as well, at least when it comes to submitting manually. The perks of job pay are great, but also there is much less driving pressure to create and engage with the forum. I now spend my days responding to posts about the VHLE and VHLM and putting my 2 cents out whenever I feel like it (which really depends on how bored I am, which is a lot more now than before).

Absolutely! I would assume people would drop off earlier than that but you're right I really wasn't paying attention to it pre-VHLE. It could simply feel like people are dropping off faster now? Regardless it is always sad to see someone who was so passionate and contributing so much in the VHLM disappear on us, regardless of frequency.

It seems as though right now, the stretch from 200 to 400TPE is destroying member activity at an astronomical rate. I think it will be very important to figure out why people are disappearing in this transition. Why isn't the VHLE driving activity? My VHLE experience was amazing, and that Istanbul team pushed some of the top S83 talent. VHLM teams are almost always mostly empty by the offseason (either waivers being drafted to the VHLM, or players graduating to the E), so where are those graduates going? I just went through and looked at VHLE rosters today, and so many of the most active VHLM players and even legendary returning members are now suddenly IA. I think the E should be an essential part of the process (I think I've made my thoughts on the E in theory quite clear by now), but I can agree that something is inherently wrong, and I have no idea what it is.

Good work Marlins! -
Very valid nitpick. It is definitely incredibly important that our character members feel as though there is something worth coming to the site for sim-wise. Ideally that's the niche pension fills? Obviously people can just be having a good ol time before finishing 2 careers (if i remember correctly its 2 700+ careers? Which is roughly 2 welfare+ careers by my math?) and I really have no answer for that that fits my philosophy so points off there for me.
-
Definitely an important point. I think that this could definitely happen, and likely already does happen. For anyone who doesn't know, I spent my entire first player on welfare, and the occasional press conference and trivia. I was a goalie, and so as a welfare goalie I didn't get a lot of playing time. This was pre-hybrid era and pre-VHLE, during the S75 boom. I think why I did what I did, beyond just being nervous to post, was that I was fine being a depth player, much like Nyko said earlier in the thread, and so earning half as much as everyone else was fine, I wasn't super invested and I just wanted to see how it went. I got to 687 TPE I believe. Now, as a VHLM GM, and a TPE addict, I get to watch first-hand how players grow and how they develop. One philosophy I have carried with me since I first heard it a couple years ago is this: "A game encourages, that which it rewards" Obviously not everyone can/should be a star in this league. We tried that one, no one had fun. But now we have this mass of players that I'd put in the 650-950 TPE range that all just feel "okay". A semi-consistent welfare earner like myself back in the day would have peaked at roughly "okay", meanwhile a lot of players submitting PTs and that will also end up being "okay". If our goal is forum content and community, then we need to reward those who contribute to it, at a significantly higher standard than those who don't. Welfare is great for getting people into the VHL, I think it is amazing. But should we not be encouraging people to want to earn better? Should we not want people to feel as though if they just do this little press conference they'll be able to compete with their peers? So many people have complained about IA bloat this week, and gustav said something somewhere about recruitment's job being not necessarily to increase our community's size, but to maintain it. My goal as a VHLM GM is to encourage my players to earn to the best of their ability without burning out, and contribute to our community. They shouldn't have to spend the first 3-4 seasons of their careers fighting to be any better than the average welfare earner in order to have fun. And welfare earners should feel pressure to better their player and contribute more to the forum, because as most of us know, that is the most rewarding part of the VHL. I want to see those being active members in our community rewarded at a high enough rate that they feel as though their efforts were worth it when it comes to sim time. Whether that is a cap boost, or a welfare nerf, or a second look at the TPE Scale, I don't know but you're right there is a huge lump of active earners wading through IAs and welfare players that likely feel discouraged. As a final note, I want to flip the quoted section back on you, not in an aggressive way or anything, because I think you're correct, but the opposite is also true at least in my opinion. "hey, this dude isn't really getting any better. Everyone around him is just as good as I am. What's the point of earning if this guy isn't going to turn into anything special?" Thanks for the post you made earlier and the comment here in this thread, I think they're important conversations to have regardless of how we stand on them.

I think this statement is actually exactly why I said what I said, and its useful to think about from both sides. As someone who earns every morsel of TPE possible, I am also spending a week's worth of TPE to sim-wise at least, achieve nothing. And maybe that's all it boils down to for me, is that my player has reached that point where if I'm lucky and all the decimals are just right for me I can increase 2 attribute points in a week. Usually it's 0-1. If careers were longer and we were looking at like 15 season careers then maybe the difference would feel more substantial, but as is, it doesn't exactly feel like anyone is increasing at any rate that makes them significantly better than anyone else. Those 650-950 peak players are all roughly the same strength, and it takes being a freak of nature to become a sustainable star in the VHL. I really do think those who have done their time and maybe don't have the time/drive/whatever anymore to max earn anymore should still be able to enjoy the thing they love without feeling guilty about not pumping out content or balancing 7 jobs anymore to do it. Maybe 3 isn't the number, maybe it stays at 5 i don't know but I think a lot of people miss feeling like we can be good again? There has to be some sort of middle ground between everyone scoring 100 points and whatever we have now. (maybe i'm just salty my player sucks right now? who knows, but glad we can discuss it)
