  1. Hello @Bigb33! I am the AGM of the Pickles, a team in the Junior Showcase, a rookie/prospect tournament taking place right now. Looking for a place to get back into the groove and have some fun right away? This tournament is a great opportunity to get settled and show us what you can do while you wait for the VHLM draft! I can offer 3rd pairing minutes with possibly some special teams minutes as well. If you're interested in joining our team, reply to this message with #SlicedToWin We'd love to have you!

  3. Absolutely insane performance!
  4. Things I've found that I think have made me a better GM: - Paying attention to my players earnings. If they have a random up week, talk about how great they've been doing that week! If they have a random down week, shoot them a message (in private of course) asking how they're doing. Often times life things just came up, and it gives you something to talk about later. Congratulate success, and take the moment to care for your real-life people on your team. - Condensing channels in the Discord down, and encouraging most conversations to happen in a public space. Having 85 channels seems great until nobody uses any of them and mute your entire server because of the ungodly amount of notifications they'll get. And secondly, take advantage of the dylan's and the lemorse's of the VHL, who will come by and join conversations as they happen. - Send a pretty generic "Hey everyone, how are we all doing today?" message every day, maybe even upwards of a couple times a day. Someone is bound to have something going on at that moment, and if not, I bet you do. Anything to get people in the chat, engaging with their teammates. - Following all of my players on the forum, and engaging with their content. I try to at least drop a like on everyone's stuff, and maybe even try to give them a nice comment too. It becomes easier and easier to post content if people are engaging with it.
  5. You are a brave soul my friend. I think every single person who gave that a shot when the hybrid attributes came out has rerolled out of passing.
  6. Awesome read! Very curious how this holds up now with hybrid making it so everyone essentially has to take on passing.
  7. Yeah there's no real function where x attribute gives you y result. By my own personal and very not intense research MOST 30 goal players in the VHL have 86+ scoring, and their scoring stat 15+ higher than their passing stat. 83 scoring seems to be what I see as a baseline for 20 goals? The most important thing to realize is that stats aren't necessarily indicative of talent. STHS does have semi-locked in values of goals it expects to hand out, so if you play a ton of time on a terrible team, you may score stats at a rate higher than one would expect, but that is purely circumstantial. Obviously higher stats, particularly DF, SC, SK and PH get you a higher chance of meeting your potential. So yes you can absolutely overperform, but usually due to the fact that your team sucks and "someone has to score right?"
  8. I mean I do want to say that ferk was out there pitching to every new player, but honestly who wants to join a team where you're the only player and you have no shot of winning? And so every player says that same thing, joins a contender in a bottom 6 role, and gets a fun environment and some wins. As the GM who had no players LAST season I was completely bailed out by an incredible and frankly quite lucky recruitment drive. Changes have been announced and for the most part they seem to fix some of your concerns. I personally think that ferk acted quite fairly, and the commissioner team was involved in the process of the selling of the few assets the Hounds had. As a GM I'd rather see my players get the chance to play on a good team than keep them to grind out like 3 wins. I don't want to pile onto recruitment any more than people already do, but this season was much worse for waivers than the past couple seasons. Obviously you can't always find a gold-mine recruitment opportunity every season, so pairing the Hounds with 2 picks and a very small waiver class and the problem looks way worse than it was. I would say this is the most competitive the VHLM has been for a long time. 9 teams were legitimately competitive. Take a couple pieces from each team and add them to the Hounds and that number drops to maybe 2-3. I'd rather 9 competitive teams than 2 contenders and 6 meh teams and 2 bad teams. Also, I suppose we should be glad that MIS going 0-72 affects exactly 0 players. It is definitely more of an indicator of the draft class than anything else.
  9. Can we just sim the rest of the playoffs right now and get to the important stuff? DRAFT YPE

  10. yeah yeah yeah I get it I should start scouting soon (I won't for AT LEAST another week)
  11. Welcome! Glad to see you over here in the VHL now!

  13. I think it's interesting that with the same information we've come to slightly different conclusions. After the past 2 seasons of few D, we've seen 2 very different build strategies emerge. Either you load up on D at the beginning and fill out your roster afterwards, or you grab the best player available and fill in on D later. Both build styles have had exactly 2 teams per style make the finals these past 2 seasons. Ignoring the Ottawa outlier (due to some unfortunate rules interpretations), I think you're absolutely correct that deeper teams, especially on D, perform significantly better in the regular season. Which in my books does suggest that they are better teams (high sample size), however despite the efforts of the rules to enforce the opposite, it seems as though shallower teams are still able to continuously break through in the playoffs. I won't suggest this phenomena is restricted to the Eastern Conference, despite the fact that it has now happened there twice, but going into the playoffs I fully assumed Miami and Halifax would be the top 2 in the East in the playoffs, yet it was the Reapers that pulled through. I guess Simon does what Simon does. I applaud your continued efforts to try to understand it!
  14. PRESS CONFERENCE Answer all 6 for 2 TPE, 3 for 1! 1. What is your player doing to keep busy during our extended offseason? 2. What is your goal for S86? 3. If you could live the life of one animal, what would it be and why? 4. What is your favourite element on the periodic table? 5. What is the inspiration behind your username? 6. If you were to add an statistic to STHS, what would it be? 20. Bless your soul for making a player in a position with a lower count first off. Secondly I want to say how misleading that graph is, despite being absolutely correct. When it says 154 G, it means there are currently 154 non-retired goaltenders available to be signed hypothetically. Based on my count there are 105FA goaltenders, all inactive and therefore ineligible to play in the VHLM, but still showing up on that create a player tally. Compare that to the 87 FA C, for which there are 2-3x the available positions and quite frankly you can build a competitive team without natural C. G are a MUST. There was a very good reason for putting that notice up last season, and it seems to have eventually worked, but now, while still being objectively correct, is wildly misleading. Good news is we may have changes coming down the line to help with that, but we shall see how it all comes out. Thanks for the comment!
  21. (No this isn't an article about Hammar Voss and I) As I prepare for the last VHLM draft in the “boom or bust era”, I’ve come to a few realizations that I hadn’t entirely considered before. First off, we’ve had to figure out how to compete with very lopsided positional depth before. This past season there was a horrendous D shortage, meaning a lot of teams had no D for a large part of the season, and very few ever had more than 2. In the playoffs last season as well, teams made deep runs in the VHLM without many D. But one thing is pretty well certain by now. That being that a team that wants to compete HAS to have a strong goaltender. And with 4 goaltenders in the draft at the moment to fill what I count as 6 starting positions, it appears some teams will be starting at a heavy disadvantage right from the start. We often worry about positional depth in the VHL, and obviously as the main product that is the most important, but that itself has always been boom and bust. The S84 VHL draft was huge for D, and then we had a shortage in the M for 2 seasons. The S86 draft is huge for goaltenders, and already it looks like we may have a shortage. Forwards seem to always be “good enough” and maybe with more of them the absence of 1 or 2 looks far less gruesome. Anyways this is a .com so I’m going to wrap it up here by saying can we please just create a normal amount of each position every season? Especially recreates, we can almost count on you making the VHL, and within the first couple rounds of the draft. If y’all figure out how to create a normal amount of each position then we can at least guarantee a few notable names in each position. New members are going to create randomly anyways, I’m not going to try to sway them. At least if we’re going to have booms, it will be booms of excited and passionate new members playing in a position they like.
  22. Hey I know I complained about people making too many goalies for like 2 seasons, but now is a great time to make a COUPLE of goalies

    1. BOOM

      BOOM

Fair enough. Time for a recreate anyway.

Big league is still going to have a massive issue honestly. We're in a weird spot.

      Shindigs

We actually need clicker goalies, as odd as that is.

(Or for the VHLM Commishes to push a certain BOG solution for next season *cough*)
