    Who Is Eaglesfan?

When I went into the VHL discord to ask for help in creating my player name, a few people I didn't recognize asked the dumbest question in the world, "Who is Eaglefan!?!?" - that's like asking who is Tom Brady or Lebron James. I am the best thing that has happened to the VHL since the fall of @boubabi. But in all seriousness, read this Hall of Fame article to learn more about who I am. I was once arguably the most active member of the league, as I was a back to back GM Continental Cup Champion with the Yukon Rush in the VHLM "Yukon 2 gud", I won a cup as gm of the Calgary Wranglers in S44 with goat goalie Hans Wingate @CowboyinAmerica. I also was a grader, created a lot of how to recruitment articles, put some ads up for us on twitter and youtube, and most importantly VHLM commish and BOG member for many seasons. My peak activity was more elite than Victor's, but he has far outlasted me. I will never be anywhere near that active again, but I will try to get myself invested in the league at least a little bit.

What Have I Been Up To?

I first joined the VHL with @Fire Tortorella (stupid name by the way) in 2011, in my freshman year of high school. During my high school and early college years I had such an abundance of free time, I was at the point that I would keep refreshing the VHL site at night, scroll over my opposing GMs names and see what threads they were looking at to see what player pages they were looking out to figure out what players my opposing GMs were trying to trade for and then negotiating with the other GM to try to get them first. While I always have had a good strategical mind, effort like that was why I was legitimately a pretty darn good GM. I will never get anywhere close to that active on the VHL again. I have now graduated college and unfortunately work a standard 9-5 job that while I like it fine enough, it's a big time suck. If I had the money I would absolutely retire tomorrow and never be bored a day in my life, as I found out during my recent 6 month stretch of unemployment last year. While I do actually still have a good amount of free time as I have minimal responsibilities (no woman and no family), I choose to prioritize it in other ways than spending hours on VHL. As any friend of family member will tell you I am a huge pickleball fanatic, as I play an average of 4 days a week and do competitive tournaments every few months. I also have been an avid player of the NHL video games for years, participating in a semi competitve Esports league called ITHL with @Fire Tortorella and some other family members that we have played for many years, in addition to playing in the extremely competitive League Gaming (LG), where I finally made my childhood dream of making it to the LGNHL last season. Those 2 hobbies on top of owning the sweetest and cutest dog in the world take up the majority of my time.

    Why Am I Returning?

It's been years since I have actually been active in this league, but I have always stuck around in the discord and even had my welfare player "Free Gorlab" going for a few seasons. The main thing that got me to stick around is a longstanding relationship with some members of the league going on about a decade. People like @Victor who I got to meet in real life in London back in 2017 (how the heck was that 7 years ago already), and @Ahmawho is my weird friend who likes lizards and hates Helsinki, and @Gustav whose town of salem games also kept me lurking around. And many more members who I am not tagging. The main reason I recreated is because Flyersfan told me to and I jokingly told him to venmo me and he actually did and gave me $100 so now I feel like I had to recreate. I also think its fitting I am joining the Ottawa Lynx as that was my original team all the way back in 2011 and outside of the Yukon Rush they are definitely the greatest VHLM franchise out there.

    Some Random VHL Memories

I realize at this point that I only need a few hundred more words to get to 1,000 to make this worth double, so let's take a trip down memory lane:
Back in the day on the original website, I don't even know how to describe it but let's say you wanted to bold certain text, italicize other text, and enlarge or color other text you had to follow a very specific coding string and do it in a certain order or the whole page would fall apart. Thank goodness the VHL has moved to the 2020s as it never would survive now if people had to deal with that. @Victormight be able to explain what I'm talking about better. The VHL used to not have a discord for many of the early years. We used to all interact via forums and instead of private team locker rooms being on discord they were on forums. There was something nice about that, but I do agree that discord change has been for the better. Still, the kids today will never know what it was like. This is a completely random aside, but I grew up with no cell phone until 7th grade, and no smartphone until late high school. I used to just fill downtime say waiting in elevators just staring into space and thinking. Now if I have to wait in line for 5 seconds I am scrolling a TikTok.  There was a legendary thread created many years ago when @Willby random chance was dining at a restaurant @Jerichowas working at, and recognized his voice as his waiter after listening to many of Jericho's Pajodcasts. He gave us a live play by play of Jericho being a waiter and it was funny.

My Internet is slow and my sleep schedule is already ruined for the week. Who knew that being up until about 3 in the morning over my long weekend would make me want to continue doing that into my work week? Time for some VHL and chill.

In light of @Fire Tortorella and @eaglesfan036 dropping some of theirs this week, you can consider this my own random VHL thoughts. I don't know why I love their format so much, but it works for both writing and reading--if you have a lot to say, you can do it quickly and end up with something that's full of things worth saying in just a couple minutes. And, of course, you can read a lot of things worth reading in that time as well if it's written well.
It's been a hot minute since we had some super motivated first-gens from a recruitment drive. It used to be typical to see people like @LucyXpher or @Noodle Enjoyer or @Nathan_8 or @UghSike or the rest of you that I'm sure are reading this but who I can't name off the top of my head after a recruitment drive, but that hasn't happened in a while. Perhaps it's becoming typical again--and I hope I get to rule over you as my VHLM GMs one day!
You may have noticed that I've been more active lately. That's because I've been more bored lately. The end of the year in my program is a common time for people to go home, in some cases across the world, and that happens to include some of my friends. For me, it also happened to be a time when I finished up a time-intensive project, and now I'm putting my energy into things like this because I'm not sure what else to do with it. When I stop dropping a new Hall of Not Bad every week, you'll know I'm enjoying life a little bit more.
Art Vandelay is currently 11-1, and my chances of reaching 300 wins are looking very good. It's ironic that I've spent a lot of time in my VHL life ripping on @Rin for hitting that milestone and not making the Hall of Fame, and now it looks like I'm headed that way as well. Speaking of Hall of Not Bad, though, I think I'm a prime candidate and I'm going to have fun with it. I hope Art was at least an inspiration to some younger members looking to build their own goalers.
Please, for the love of Gustav, do your own damn point tasks. Most of the enjoyment I get out of this league comes from putting work into things, watching people enjoy those things, and being proud of them. That's way better than the TPE I get out of it and I feel that it's such a loser move (and one that wouldn't make me feel that radiant VHL glow) to have some website do it for you. 500 words goes by way, way faster than you think (at least, it does for me because I'm great at using too many of the stupid things), and if that's too many, 150 words goes by faster than you think as well. No one wants to read your GPT output. Go write something people will want to read and you'll be better off for it.
As an add-on to that last point, I've gained some real-life skills through the VHL. I'm decent with Excel in part because I've done a lot of sim league nerd stuff, and I'm decent with Photoshop because I've spent time trying to get into graphics. Plus, do you have any idea how many words I've typed into this forum? I have no clue, but I'm positive that it's made me a better writer. The only exposure I'd have to writing otherwise is through some class projects, and I went through those projects watching lots of other people have a way harder time writing their parts of the project than I did. I don't think I was naturally smarter; I think I've just done a lot of organizing my thoughts and putting them down for other people to read...because I do that every week here and I put effort into it. Who knows--would I even have done well on the things I applied for after graduation had I not built that up here? Sometimes I look at my old articles and laugh a bit, but it's a little less funny if I try to picture my old statements of purpose written the same way.

I saw @Fire Tortorellahas returned to the league and wrote a post so I figured what the heck I would too I realize that many members who weren't here years ago probably have no idea who we are - long story short me and Fire Tortella (formerly known as Flyersfan) joined the league way back in 2012, and both of us were GMs of VHLM and VHL teams (I won more cups), VHLM commishioners, and graders. Flyersfan did go on to be a VHL commishioner too.  I remember back when we first joined the VHL @Victor was quite convinced I was Flyersfan's multi and not actually his brother, as he wound up checking out both of our Facebook pages to make sure we were actually real people who were brothers. The reason Victor was so skeptical of us was this was shortly after the infamous Anderson incident. I don't remember the full story but this Anderson fella created say 10 players in the span of a few seasons all his multis? And was eventually discovered and banned but used IT tricks to just keep creating players. So every new member for a while was questioned for being Anderson. What a legend. Many years after Victor initially checked out my facebook profile, we eventually became Facebook friends as he found out I was studying for a semester in London. Meeting Victor at a pub in London was pretty awesome, I was glad he was a normal nice person to talk to and not some internet weirdo. I did enjoy making up a story when Victor's IRL friend joined us later and asked how we met and we had a pre made up story about how I went to school with Victor in Vancouver and not that we were real life besties.  I am really glad that @Gustavis still here. In addition to being an extremely nice person, his Town of Salem games he runs are awesome and was the only reason I stuck around for a while.

I'm back! After taking a 2 year hiatus (at least - pretty sure my actual activity slowed down way before then anyway), we're gonna see how this goes. The days of me being a top TPE earner are long gone, but I'm gonna have some fun with this player. "The meta" is gone and I'm just throwing around TPE willy-nilly in these new attributes, but I'm looking to make more of a two-way defenseman this time than my usual offensive defenseman. That reminds me - I don't think I've created a forward in....5 years? Was Robin my last forward? I legitimately have no idea, but I can't think who else it would have been. So what have I been up to? @eaglesfan036 and I have entered the world of competitive CHEL. He runs an ITHL team with family members and friends we've made along the way and both of us play in LG. I'm down in the CHL for my second full season, though I'm pretty sure I could have at least been in the ECHL if I really wanted to. Eags made it to the big leagues this year but pretty sure he enjoyed his time in the AHL much more.

The VHL magazine forum has been hidden for a while which seems a shame as that was a pretty big part of the VHL back in the day - so influential it even got its own 20 in 20 article and ended up with 340 editions up to late 2017 (+4 in an aborted 2018 revival). So I've decided to stick them in the publicly available VHL history forum today.

You can see what they looked like from edition 328 to 340 as the rest seem to have been destroyed by Dropbox - unless @STZ has them stored away somewhere.

In case, they can not be resurrected, I have also brought back the Articles Submissions forum which has all the raw copies. Regardless if they don't look pretty and in mag format I think it's right for them to be in the public domain as this is a fair few years of articles from some of the VHL's best writers which would otherwise be in the Media Spot archive.

In a similar vein, the VHLM magazine submissions are also now in the HOF (I don't think any of the actual magazines can be retrieved): https://vhlforum.com/forum/51-vhlm-magazine/ That ran for about 3 years and 100 editions in the previous golden age of the VHL/M.
