Baozi got a reaction from BOOM in Claimed:Former Hall of Fame Agent short Listed for Brampton Boss
Former Hall of Famer Short Listed for Brampton Boss Chair
VHL hockey news recently got official word that player agent and VHLM commissioner Terence Fong had been confirmed on the short list of candidates for the general manager position of the Brampton Blades.
Terence Fong was the former VHLM commissioner for quite a few season, notably during the rebuild and restructure of the VHL developmental system. His work and effort in the process in addition to his years of service in the VHL was recognized by the VHL board of directors with a nod into the VHL hall of fame as a builder.
“We believe Fong is a really good candidate for this position,” one of the Bramptons owners, Qur’an said in a statement.
“He has been around the league for a very long time, he has played in the league, he has coached in the league and more importantly he was in a position of authority with the youth players of the league. I think he would be a great addition as a general manager to the VHLM and his expertise and experience in dealing with youth players will make him a key cog in the development of the Brampton franchise.” – Brampton Owner Qur’an
Fong stated that while he would definitely relish the opportunity to step into the role, he understands the process and that he is up against other good candidates for the position.
“I’ve spent too much time in the VHL to not try my hand at it, it has been something I’ve been looking at getting into since I stepped down from being the VHLM commissioner. I like to play an up tempo style of game, like when I coached the Davos Dynamo that one year to the playoffs. I think a team that can skate quickly and coherently is the best type of team to have.” – Terence Fong
On the players side of things, more than a few players have spoken in support for Terence Fong to be the next general manager. He has built strong ties through many of the player agents and manager in the VHL through his years being an agent and he isn’t new to managing players. His most recent notable player in the VHL, Xin Xie Xiao spoke of his appreciation for Fong as his agent.
“Fong is quite thorough, detail orientated and above all he wants to win. He helped me get through my earlier years, coaching and advising me through all the rough patches to where I am now in the VHL. He has a great mind for the game, even if it is more tactical and uncompromising as some may say, but he gets things done. I credit a lot of my success to Fong helping me out through the years and I’m very grateful.”
So what remains to be seen is if the lack of front office experience for Fong will be the key point against him. Other general managers have in the past beaten out his resume of accolades due in part to front office experience and the league attempting to inject youth into the minor league organizational ranks. Outside of that, Fong has told us that even if not now, he believes that eventually he’ll get his shot at managing a team.

Baozi got a reaction from BOOM in Claimed:Former Japanese Stars Weigh in on Rising Koji Yamazaki
Former Japanese Stars Weigh in on Rising Youngster Yamazaki
www.VHLHockeyNews.com
The land of the rising sun has produced several remarkable hockey players in the past and it seems in the upcoming S39 draft, another hot prospect is set to make his debut in the VHL. The last Japanese player to be taken first overall in the VHL draft was Daisuke Kanou. The last Japanese defender to be taken in that spot was Ginzou Fujiwara, who won a cup with the Helsinki Titans back in S15.
Meet Koji Yamazaki, six foot four, mean, nasty and dynamic. Hailing from Tokyo Japan, the Japanese import is currently ranked #2 in the upcoming VHL draft but there has been a lot of talk on him over taking Jackson Miller for first overall in the draft. Playing on an ultra-dominant squad of Outlaws, Yamazaki accrued 128 points in 70 games, a great start to his professional career. His 293 hits and 200 penalty minutes made him an imposing defender throughout the junior league and his perchance for making smart offensive plays was one of the key reason why the Outlaws were so strong offensively this season. It is because of this that there have been comparisons drawn between him and the former first overall pick Fujiwara, also known as the White Wolf. Certainly Yamazaki is much bigger, Fujiwara clocked in at only 5 foot 11, but was incredibly solid and strong on his feet. While Fujiwara never posted gaudy numbers in junior, I believe he only registered a point per game pace, one could see his talent level. He had great technical and puckhandling ability, but what separated him from the rest of the pack back then was his phenomenal skating ability and defensive awareness. Lots of this we can see in Yamazaki , he has great skating ability, he is tough and he is great defensively in his own zone. His technical skill may not be on par with Fujiwara back then, but there is no doubt that the potential is there. We spoke to the two former Japanese stars, Kanou Daisuke and Ginzou Fujiwara about Yamazaki.
“When I watch Yamazaki, I’m seeing him as the face for the next generation of Japanese hockey players. He has great work ethic and he has all the physical tools to be a great player for a long time. Though he has some ways to get to the same level as Fujiwara, I think it will happen eventually. Few came out of the draft class as refined as Fuji. I believe scouting reports put his defense rating at an 80 and his puck skills at 70 and the rest of the offensive kit at 70 as well. It was how he was able to step into the VHL almost seamlessly. I think Yamazaki will need more time to adjust and may struggle a bit early on. That being said, he is much bigger than Fujiwara, and when all is said and done, if he progresses at his current rate, I think he has the tools to be better than Fujiwara. Playing with the Vasteras IK, Fujiwara never really massed high point totals because PensFan at the time played an all defense trap system. In fact I believe it wasn’t until he went to the Titans that they finally uncovered Fujiwara’s latent offensive ability. I think if Yamazaki goes to the Titans, he will have a great group to play with and the Titans have always been about offense so that I think that will help since it is a strength of Yamazaki’s game. I look forward to seeing how he does.” - Daisuke Kanou, Former VHL Goalie
“Yamazaki is really good. I like how versatile his game is. He skates, he hits and he can run the power play. I think he is a bit of a higher risk than Miller, but I think he has the ability to be the best player out of this draft. I think he will be better than me to be honest. He definitely hits harder as I’ve seen on the replays.” – Ginzou Fujiwara, Former VHL Defenseman
One thing is for certain, he will be good, the only question that remains is...just how good?

Off to arguably their best start in franchise history, the New York Americans are still looking to get better. Xin Xie Xiao had a pair of goals including the game winner, and the New York Americans beat the Helsinki Titans for the second time in a row in the back to back series with a 3-0 win. Odin Tordahl added another goal and Andrey Zadorov had 3 assists as the surging Americans shutout the Titans in back to back games.
“We’re doing really well right now. I think we’re 17-2 and but everyone in the locker room thinks we can do better. That’s the exciting part, to think there are things we can do to be a better team. XXX has been on a tear lately and everything he is putting on net seems to be going in. Him and Odie have been a great pair out there, always dangerous and making things happen. Slaughter is always at the right place at the right time and is supporting them with great decisions and smart plays. “ – Assistant Coach Rick Mercer
The Americans are top team in the league so far just 1/3 into the season with a record of 17-0-2. Odin Tordahl is leading the league with 39 points and teammate Xin Xie Xiao is sitting second in the league with 35 points. Odin is also leading the league with 19 goals and Xin is leading the league in plus/minus. The goalie tandem, that was a questioned move in the off season by GM ADV has been solid thus far though Tuomas Tukio has gotten the majority of the game starts but proven the pickup has been good for the team success.
In other news, Jakob Linholm has started off his VHL career fairly decently. A solid all-around player, he has been producing at just shy of 0.5ppg playing with Kellinger and Laich. There is quite a bit of promise in Linholm, a player drafted in S37 whom has put up great numbers in the VHLM. Projected as a solid top six player, Linholm is adapting to the pro game nicely. He skates well, isn’t a liability in his own end and has a great nose for the net. With the exit of Simon Tremblay to the Wranglers, Linholm will have to take charge of the opportunity to solidify himself in the vacant spot. Big shoes to fill (Tremblay was one of the top scorers during his time with the Americans) but ultimately the staff believe he can get there in time.
Newcomer Wesley Kellinger has also been a great presence on the second line. Not only has he been putting up points, he has been a great veteran presence for youngsters Logan Laich and Linholm. While perhaps not as used to being in a secondary role, Kellinger has thrived in the position and reportedly has been pleased with the team success.
Unsung hero and sometimes forgotten on the score sheet is Logan Laich whom leads the team in hits with 82. His punishing style of game has endeared him to fans and his can do attitude is always encouraging in the locker room. A great team player, and a vocal leader in the locker room, Laich has all the makings of a future team leader.
With a great collection of star power and youth moving forward, it remains to be seen how the Americans will fare in the playoffs, and how the youngsters on the team will deal with the tough grind as the season drags on.
