  2. Phil Strasmore's Scouting Report User: Phil Height: 6'2" Weight: 215lbs Drafted VHLm: 4th Overall (S84) Phil Strasmore was drafted 4th overall in the Season 84 draft by the San Diego Marlins. This was not a complete shock, as the player comes with a player agent who is famous for getting the best out of his players. The only reason it was a little surprising, is the fact that Strasmore was a former NFL player who was injured to the point of retirement. It also explains why he is one of the oldest players in his draft class. He is now 24 years old. Phil was picked up on waivers in Season 83 by the Mississauga Hounds. He played the remaining 12 games of the regular season, managing 12 points, 13 hits, and 8 shots blocked. He helped them out in the playoffs, although they did not get passed the first round. Still, he managed 7 points in the 6 games. As previously mentioned, that off-season, Strasmore was selected 4th overall. He played 29 games for the Marlins before the General Manager succumbed to the pressure and decided to trade off his players to rebuild for the future. In those 29 games he showed some offensivey-minded habits, getting 32 points, but more impressively, taking 73 victims of his hits and blocking 77 shots. He was dealt to Houston, where he played the rest of his VHLM career. Again, he was proving to be just over a point-per-game defenseman, with 46 points in his 42 games and collecting 85 hits and 58 shots blocked on the defensive end. Eventually the Bulls lost a Game 7 heart-breaker, but Strasmore still managed a health 12 points and 17 hits. His VHLm Career wasn't brilliant but definitely showed enough to peak the interested of VHLe and VHL General Managers. Unfortunately for the VHLe, Strasmore had make it abundantly clear that given his age, he wanted to skip right into the VHL, if the league had use for him. Below are a look at his VHLm stats: Now we are going to evaluate his career with a few pros and cons to his game: Cons: Discipline Because he has such a huge frame, he very often under estimates his power and strength. Sometimes he goes into the boards too hard, or accesses his football rage and takes a silly penalty. He will need to keep and eye and a handle on this throughout his career to keep himself out of the penalty box Defense It's a weird con for a defensman, but looking at his plus/minus from his VHLm days, he has been at the point end more often than not of opponents' offensive blades. He needs to figure out a way to tighten up his defensive attributes. Goal Scoring Although not his main focus, he should be able to contribute more than he was in terms of scoring goals. With such a huge frame, teams will look to him for having a powerful slap-shot that can decimate teams. Pros: Physicality Obviously this would be the first pro. The man is huge and will put the fear of God into anyone stepping foot over the blue line. He is working on using his body to lean into hits so he doesn't break opponents' necks. Playmaking Strasmore is a pass-first defensman. He has the strength to shrug off hits so he has more time than most to get his head up and look around. Using his athletic IQ, he can usually make the right play and create a decent goal scoring opportunity. Special Units Strasmore is a force on the penalty kill and powerplay. He is the size of two smaller guys so when he's killing a penalty, it's like the team is at even strength anyway. On the powerplay, I know we've talked about goal-scoring being an issue, but his record on the powerplay is actually quite good with over half his goals (15 of 28) coming with the man advantage. If he can exploit this, he will be very dangerous in the VHL. 690 Words like the keener I am.
  3. Better Late Than Never I will try to keep this as concise as possible, as I am still used to writing Biographies for the VHL. However, the title says it all. Phil Strasmore did not aspire to be a hockey player. In fact, his professional athletic career began in football. Unfortunately, an injury forced him out of the game and he had to reassess his options. Phil Knight, VHL Builder HoF player agent, made no secret about recruiting him into the VHL, seeing the potential that he could turn into a defensive wall and playmaker. This is the stage that needed to be set before we really get into the review of his Junior Season. Knowing that he had absolutely no playing experience, but was an immensely framed athlete with heaps of athleticism, Phil Knight made arrangements for Strasmore to be flown into Liverpool, which hosts the famous ice rink training site he co-founded with his former client, VHL Hall of Famer, and now life-long friend Phil Gerard. Gerard got Strasmore on skates for the first time and did a full assessment. "Because of his injury, he needed to change the way he has always used his body," Gerard explained. "He was so used to throwing his full force into everything and that is one of the reasons he got his injury in the first place. Now, I've been training him to use his body to get in the way. This will bode very well for a defenseman in the VHL. With his size, he only needs to lean into players." "You could tell he was a professional athlete," Phil Knight commented. "Although he had never been on skates before, you could just see his body movements were all in perfect balance. it only took him a couple of strides to really start generating some magnificent power in his legs. That was my biggest worry - that he wouldn't be able to skate. Now I just needed to leave it up to Gerrard to help Strasmore learn to adapt to his limitations and use his IQ to be successful. This is the toughest and riskiest process I've ever done but I have full faith in Strasmore and think he will be a tremendous asset to any team." Strasmore immediately showed Gerard his athleticism and it was plain to see that he would make a decent impact in the league. Phil Knight drafted up the agency papers and Strasmore signed with him that evening. Just like that, Strasmore was a footballer turned hockey player. 418 Words.

  5. In a world of alliteration, only one letter matters. But also, there's some VHL-relatedness to this post. Calgary Wranglers are having a strong season so far. They are 3rd in the North American Conference and have the second most goals for. But what's impressive is the goal distribution amongst the horses. And Strasmore has something to say about that. "It's great seeing everyone contribute," says the 2-goals-this-season-liar. "We have our leader, Janser @Daniel Janser with 32 goals, four more with 24+, it really is terrific." Strasmore went on to say that the team cameraderie has been a joy to be a part of as well. "It's not only that we are playing well, which makes it easier for everyone to get along - I'm not sure how much things would be different if we were losing to be honest. It's a great bunch of guys in there and I think we feed off that energy in the lockerrooms and take it with us to the ice." Strasmore, although he only has 15 points to his name in his rookie campaign, has contributed a healthy 120 hits and 88 shots blocked. He's a budding defensemen that we will be interested in keeping our eyes on!

  8. Great episode! I like your idea of getting stats to a manageable level. This should work out well for you. Always love listening to the answers to your questions!
  9. Review: Very nice insight into Molly the Cat’s season so far. Done in interview form, we get a glimpse into the personality of the player and see some of the connections he’s made off the ice. For Media Spots, I always expect at least a Title and one picture, so that is something that would help the presentation. A flash of colour never hurts either. Otherwise, the italics from the questions differentiate the answers, which is great and the content itself was entertaining. Great job and good luck on the rest of your rookie campaign! Too bad you’re going to lose to use tonight though @JCarson

  11. Almost a giant cliche, Calgary Wranglers rookie defenseman Phil Strasmore is struggling to keep awake on the ice during games and practices. This has to be due to the sleep regression currently taking ahold of his infant. The future VhLian is just shy of four months and has begun teething. Strasmore has reportedly been getting inadequate amounts of sleep and it has been affecting his on ice performances. Calgary GM Ricer has expressed some concerns about the development of his prize horse, but remains positive that Strasmore will see some rest and improvements soon. ”I’ve offered him hotel rooms when we are playing at home but he refuses. I don’t blame him, glad he wants to be with his baby as much as possible. Maybe I’ll hire a nanny for him.” Strasmore still has much to prove.

  17. Calgary Wrangler Cowboy and Sheriff @Ricer13 put a lot of stock and faith into the young burly Brit, trading up to nab him at 3rd overall. VHL experts say that he went higher than he should have, but the Knight Agency and Ricer both think he will be worth it before it's all said and done. "He's a loyal guy," Phil Knight explains. "He will stay with the team that puts their faith in them for as long as they want. Money isn't the driving factor. He just loves playing the game and wants to stick it out with whoever gave him the opportunity to do so." His opening part of his career has by no means been stellar, but it does show some great potential. In the 17 games played, he's still looking for his first career goal and only had 7 assists, but with a 5+ ratings and 38 hits and 28 shots blocked as a peripheral defenseman, he is already showing some quality. Calgary are a highly competitive team this year with many players coming into their prime. This always means that the Rookies don't get as much ice time and specifically for defenders, they don't get the opportunity to hit and block a shot - but this is of no concern to Phil. "It's fantastic to see so many of my teammates have break-out seasons," he said, "It just motivates everyone around when teammate after teammate keep producing. This is a great atmosphere to feed off!"

  20. We would not call it exactly a "streaky" start - except we did, because we are suckers for alliteration. However, the young, strong, defenseman has indeed shown some great glimpses of talent over his first 4 games of the season. Calgary find themselves clear atop of the North American Conference with a 3-1-1 record, and although Strasmore only tallied one assist in the four games - he started off showing us his defensive capabilities. Strasmore blocked 5 shots against Davos, limited the damage done, while going on to dish out 6 huge hits against LA, helping his team to a Shoot out victory. Strasmore is definitely the green defensman on the team - but he's trying to play like he's been with the team for a long time - which bodes well for team chemistry and pairing up the d-men. Of course, it's so early in the season, everything can change - but let's see how far Strasmore can stretch this decent start!
  21. What DOES the fox say? Does Phil Strasmore have a shot at getting into the Hall of Fame? Do you think the playoff format should change? IF we get to the point of need to expand two more teams - would you be in favour of messing the league into one big league like European Football? The top two VHLE teams could get promoted and bottom two VHL teams get demoted. Huge change and probably unrealistic in the historical sense but neat idea, no? What was the last TV show you watched? Will we EVER play on the same team? @JardyB10:cheers:
