D - Jacob Stone, S88-S96 RS: 648 GP, 186 G, 462 A, 648 P, +162, 1,055 PIM, 1,443 HIT, 1,459 SB, 35 GW PO: 31 GP, 12 G, 24 A, 36 P, -2, 74 PIM, 104 HIT, 87 SB, 0 GW S92 Jake Wylde Trophy (Top Defensive Defenceman) S95 Jake Wylde Trophy (Top Defensive Defenceman) S96 Brett Slobodzian Trophy (Most Outstanding) S96 Sterling Labatte Trophy (Top Defenceman) S96 Jake Wylde Trophy (Top Defensive Defenceman) S96 Alexander Beketov Trophy (Most Assists) 3x All-VHL First Team (S93, S95, S96) 1x All-VHL Second Team (S92) It's a travesty that one of the best all-around defencemen in VHL history never won a playoff round but he accomplished everything else he could. Jacob Stone was the anchor of the hugely successful (in the regular season) Malmo Nighthawks team where he spent 9 seasons and at least matched the legacy of Condor Adrienne, with whom he is now the only 3-time Wylde Trophy winner. Once he came into his prime, Stone was perennially in the conversation for best defencemen in the league, leading Malmo to 6 straight playoff appearances, and leaving his best season for last in S96. LW - Nico Pearce, S81-S89 RS: 650 GP, 362 G, 412 A, 774 P, +177, 769 PIM, 1,785 HIT, 335 SB, 52 GW PO: 64 GP, 23 G, 39 A, 62 P, -12, 99 PIM, 166 HIT, 33 SB, 6 GW S84 Scotty Campbell Trophy (Most Valuable) S84 Kevin Brooks Trophy (Most Goals) 2x All-VHL First Team (S84, S85) 1x All-VHL Second Team (S88) A slightly longer wait for the 9-season trailblazer Nico Pearce who finally gets into the Hall after a few close calls. Pearce wasn't loyal to one team and bookended his career with two losses in the cup finals (made worse by missing out on a championship by virtue of a mid-season trade in his prime in S86), but the main work was done in between, where Pearce hit the 80-point mark for 6 straight seasons. The peak actually came in his 4th season, with 120 points dragging a struggling Helsinki to the playoffs, and it's the fact it wasn't followed up that meant he had to wait longer, but the body of work added up in the end. As for Builder, this is straight out of the Quik playbook - join the league in S1, spend a notable 20 seasons in it to begin with, and then go on hiatus for over a decade, before coming back like nothing happened. I thought there was a chance, but to receive 13/14 votes is a surprise. I guess consistently being the second-best defenseman behind one of the all-time greats does hold some weight.
