Why Ottawa and not Yukon, the team you were GM'ing?

I didn't really care to simply sign with a team to win a Cup for free. Yeah, Yukon will always be a team that is special to me, but they already have multiple active defensemen on their roster. If they were a bit lower in the standings and actually could use a defenseman, then I would have loved to sign with them. If they were in the position where the Aces were, I would have gone to them. As for why Ottawa: after seeing that Yukon wasn't really a good option, it was down to Ottawa and Vegas. I actually had a larger offer from the Aces, who actually had room for active defensemen on their roster while still being closer to the top of the standings. Ottawa became the choice because Jason is a good guy; no disrespect to Spade, I'm sure he's great too, but I liked the thought of my return to the VHL starting off on the team of one of the most prolific VHLM GM's, especially since it's the same franchise for which he was most well-known. The fact that I'd be joining a team with literally no other (non-CPU) defensemen was enough to close the deal.

Are you planning to go first OV in VHL draft?

As far as the draft goes, I'm not super concerned with being selected high. Looking at the names out there now, I don't expect to go first overall, but it could come down to team needs between myself and Matt Thompson (Beketov). I anticipate he'll be a higher TPE player, but if I'm not too far behind and the team selecting first is prioritizing defensemen, then it's possible. Most of the other creates so far are in the same boat as me: a returning member who has had success in the past, but has also shown reason to doubt them. All things considered, though, being drafted first overall is not a goal I have in mind.

Gate = welfare only player?

Gate will likely be strictly a welfare player, yes. There are still certainly other avenues through which I will earn TPE. I'll still do some of the smaller tasks, along with all the fantasy zone stuff. I won't be earning my 12 TPE per week cap, so I'll fall behind the most dedicated of players, but I certainly think I can earn enough to be a solid depth player at the very least. It is possible that, from time to time, I'll have an idea for a media spot and some time to spare, but they will be few and far between.

1. How do you feel about ottawas chances next season and going forward?

2. You said youd be a depth player, can you be more specific about your anticipated role?

3. How would you describe your style of play?

5. Whats your ideal situation going into the VHL ?

Jason (diamond_ace) is a competent GM, and I think the team is in good hands while he's around. I don't know exactly how they are positioned for the future, and right now that's honestly not really a concern of mine. I'm only on the team for the remainder of this season, then I'm back in the draft pool. I could end up back in Ottawa, and I'd have no complaints if I do.

20 hours ago, HellBillyXIII said:

2. You said youd be a depth player, can you be more specific about your anticipated role?

I'm not expecting to be a team's number one defenseman; at least, not a competing team's top defenseman. Maybe when I'm at the peak of my career a team will be able to rely heavily on me, but I see myself as more of a secondary player. With the way rosters are in the league, maybe to say I'll be a "depth" player isn't necessarily the best wording, because even if I'm the third or fourth best defenseman, I'd still get several minutes.

20 hours ago, HellBillyXIII said:

3. How would you describe your style of play?

I (will be) more of a physical, defense-first player. Teams can find players who want to score. That's usually not an issue. I'm hoping that by focusing more on my defense, I can help out in an area where a team might be lacking. I likely won't be a superstar player, but I don't want to become a liability. Wherever I end up, there will be players that can score, so I'll let them do that while I play as a defensive specialist.

4. Do you think Ottawa will make some noise in the playoffs?

We might be able to get through the first round, but past that, no. Truthfully, when I signed here, I hadn't realized that the Vilhjalmssons had been traded, so at that point I was thinking we maybe had an outside chance at some more upsets, but without them, I really don't see it.

5. Whats your ideal situation going into the VHL ?

I think ideally I would like to go to a team that is on the verge of competing or already near the top of the pack. That may seem a bit odd considering my decision to join Ottawa instead of one of the top two teams in the VHLM, but I'm in the minors for development. Once I'm in the VHL, it's all about winning. As a defensive specialist in an offense-driven league like the VHL, if I end up on a rebuilding team, it's going to be a real struggle for me. I'd like to be able to start my career with a good group of players around me.

It'd be okay, I guess. Being not as invested in the league as I have been in the past, I don't really have feelings of "oh yeah I really want to be on a team with this guy" like I have with others. But yeah, the most recent I could think of for sure is Jason White and Benjamin Glover on New York. It's very possible that a season or two of another career we were on a team together, but nothing that comes to mind.

For updating purposes, with 6 questions answered, this marks the end of my March 26-April 1 cycle. The remaining questions will be for April 2-8.

I'm not sure if he's stated how active he's going to be in his return, but if he returns to top form, I don't think you and I will be the top two. Truthfully, I was never 100% on myself being a top two pick, so now with another potential big name in the mix, that just decreases the chances even more, even if he's just 70% of the Victor that we were used to seeing.

I actually wasn't aware until just now that it was the Jake Wylde Award instead of the Jack Sound award, but I like that switch. I don't think I was ever going to have much of a chance at the Labatte, so the splitting of the award will actually give me a chance at something. It's probably the only award (save maybe the Stolzy or Funk) that I'll ever potentially have a chance at, so I guess that's nice that it gives me something to look forward to. It does make the decision to build a defensive defenseman feel as though it could be a little more rewarding.

1. What would be your most memorable created player and why?

As tragic as the tale of Benjamin Glover is, it has to be him. This was back when New York was a terrible franchise historically, and I was GM of the team trying to turn the image around. Glover, my goalie, joined the team in S24. I played eight seasons with the team, including five finals appearances (four straight from S25-S28) and lost all of them. While this mild "success" was the beginning of a turnaround for the franchise, to have never won with Glover was very saddening.

SAHD = stay-at-home defenseman? As far as being a capable fighter goes, I'm not going to be concerned with that. I don't know that there's any evidence that this would be beneficial for a team in any way, and I'll have enough else to worry about. While I do want to be a physical player, I don't necessarily care to rack up penalty minutes for fighting when I'm sure I'll get enough for minors as it is.

I'm just gonna skip this question because I don't watch hockey enough to make player comparisons.

I do think I potentially have great value for a team on penalty kills, but unfortunately I also think I'll be drawing a lot of penalties myself. But if I'm going to be as good on defense as a team's star defenseman who is all-around great, it would seem more practical to give me ice time when we aren't going to be playing very offensively anyway.

5. What would be an offensive season for you in terms of points?

Maybe in the 50s. By the prime of my career, if I'm in the right place at the right time, I might reach a point-per-game season.  I don't plan on being totally incompetent in the offensive zone, but I will never consider scoring to be my job.

3. What areas are you looking to improve?

4. Fast forward. Predict your rookie season stats in the VHL. 20 goals? 30? 50 points? 80?

A little late on answering these but oh well, answers can still be relevant

3.) Which player has been the key for the Lynx's success this season?

4.) What VHL team are you hoping to get drafted for?

1. We have the talent to beat them for sure, but I think I still have to give them both an edge on us. Our biggest issue is easily on offense, as we've actually scored the fewest goals of all teams this season. We haven't seen much of our team since the trade with Yukon, so hopefully Tribuncovs can give the offense a bit of a boost in the playoffs. Adding Pilgrim to an already strong group of defensemen, hopefully we just straight up don't have to score more than a couple goals to win games. Saskatoon in particular had our number during the regular season and will be a tough team to beat, but there's always a chance.

2. As we can see, it didn't quite hold up, which actually does surprise me a bit. I think on a team with more players capable of scoring, I could have easily been over a point-per-game despite being more defensive-minded, considering this is the VHLM, where my skills with the puck, even if not the greatest, are still relatively good. Going into the VHL, of course, accumulating points will get much tougher for a player of my skill set, and where my skills will be developing.

3. It may be conceited to say this, but I'm going to say myself. Our offense obviously hasn't been stellar, while Alvaro Jokinen and myself have similar stats all-around. I think it's hard to deny, if you watch us, that I'm more influential on the ice. Nothing against him, he's a great player as well, but there's a reason I'm projected as the top pick of the draft.

4. Nothing against any of the other teams that might be looking to draft me, but I think I would have to say Quebec. I've been seeing Bryce Zhields light it up on Saskatoon all season, so if I could get the chance to join the Meute with him, I think we could do great things. They already have some good prospects up in the VHL, including another really good forward in Veran Dragomir, so I don't think I'd have to worry about being on a team that can't score.

1. It's been a bit of a disappointment, to be honest. Ottawa just hasn't been able to get things done offensively, which means my assist and point totals have suffered a bit more than I would've liked. Coupled with the fact that I'm playing with some other good defensemen, I haven't really been able to rack up a ton of blocked shots myself. If I were to rate my season on a scale from 0 to 20, I would give it a 14, with the potential for 15 based on how the final game goes. (That's the number of TPE I'll be getting from the achievement tracker.)

2. I think it depends on the needs of the team drafting first. In terms of skill and potential, there isn't a huge difference between myself, Matt Thompson, and Podrick Cast. We are in very similar boats. If the team drafting first wants a defenseman, they'll pick me. If they want a wing, Thompson. If they need a center, Cast. However, if they're just looking to take the best player available, then I think that would be me.

5. Hows it feel right now? VHL in general etc?

3. My current focus is to improve my checking ability. After I get a bit better there, I want to round out my game a bit by working on my passing and scoring before I start really focusing all my time and energy on my defensive capabilities. That will include defense, strength, puck handling, and skating mostly. Maybe I'll throw some more training into checking at some point, get that up to a 7.5 or 8 out of 10, while I work those other four up to a 9/10.

4. I'll say 5-10 goals and 25-35 assists. It'll very much depend on what the roster around me looks like, but I think somewhere from 30 to 45 points is a fair prediction. I think there will be more opportunity to improve on that, but I really don't see myself above 60 points even if I play better than I expect I will.

5. Not necessarily a great time to answer this question given the issues with the site the last couple days, but overall things seem good. I'm excited for the draft and getting on a VHL team, and as far as the direction the VHL is going in, we seemed to have figured something out with recruitment. Granted, we have to find a way to get these new people to stick around and actually get into it, but the S61 draft is looking good I think. Hoping for the best.

1. In the lead-up to the draft, the main competition for first overall has been between yourself and Matt Thompson. Something that Thompson has that Gate does not have is a position of power within the VHL, do you think that helps Thompson's draft stock more as maybe making him the safer bet since he's involved in running the league or do you feel that this doesn't give him any real boost over Gate in terms of draft stock?

2. A quote in the recent Speculatoria comparing yourself and Thompson said that it is "harder to come by a #1 Defenseman than a #1 Right Wing", do you agree with that statement or not?

3. Quebec, a team that you said yourself earlier in this press conference that you favour, just made a move to enter the top two picks of this draft. What would you prefer; #1 Overall or going to the Meute?

1. A person in a position of power can go inactive just like anyone else; and it's not impossible to earn more TPE than someone with such a role. Granted, that is a steady stream of TPE that he has over me, as I don't have any league job let alone one one of such importance. Holding that position does show a level of commitment to the league, so it is definitely something to consider, but it does not necessarily guarantee a sure thing.

2. I'm not sure why someone would bring up right wings when comparing myself to Thompson, considering he's a left wing. If we're specifically talking about right wing vs defensemen, I'd probably disagree. But I think in general there are more top tier forwards than their are defensemen. However, I don't think it's possible to have too many #1 forwards, while it is possible to have too many #1 defensemen. And I think you can win with just average defensemen, while it's harder to win with just average forwards.

3. Before I saw that trade, I really wanted to go number one. Nothing against hedgehog, but I'm not particularly excited with where Riga is at right now so they were not on the top of my list. With Quebec picking at two now, there is a bit of relief knowing that even if Seattle doesn't pick me, I might end up in what I would still say is my most desired destination. Being drafted first wouldn't really mean all that much to me, so my preference would actually be to end up going second. However, if I do go first, we could possibly end up on Seattle together now that they have the fourth overall pick in there possession as well.

@street

1. Absolutely thrilled. I guess it's not quite as exciting as it could be, given that @STZ isn't active like he used to be, but the team still has a lot to like about it. It's also one of the franchises that I haven't spent much time playing for, with Diana Maxwell's final season being the only time I can think of. Plus it meant I didn't have to change my avatar, which is nice.

2. We have several pieces in place, though both STZ and @Mr.Baller not being around so much recently takes a bit away from our overall outlook. Still, Dragomir is looking like a future star, Louth should be good, and Harding is looking solid in the minors right now. We've got our goalie in place and some good young defensemen. We're a step ahead of the other rebuilding teams at the moment, which is nice. I was a little disappointed when we picked Alvaro Jokinen over Stromberg in the draft, but we ended up getting a second round pick for him, which given the recent surge in recruitment could very well turn into a solid prospect. We could definitely stand to use a couple more updating players, which we'll hopefully find next off-season.

3. As far as the team goes, I expect us to firmly finish as the fifth best team. Despite getting a win over Helsinki in our first game, I think we are behind the likes of the Titans, Americans, Wranglers, and Dynamo. As I said, we're further in our rebuild than the Legion, Bears, and Reign, so we should beat them in the standings for sure. I think it'll be a pretty decent gap both ways, with at least 10 points separating us from the team directly above us and directly below us. For me personally, I'm not expecting an incredible season. Somewhere between 35-45 points, 110-130 hits, 110-130 shots blocked.

4. To say next season would be a bit optimistic, but depending on free agency I think it's possible. We could be an attractive destination for players on the open market. I think a more realistic answer, and more of my expectation, would be to say S63. Give our current players a couple more seasons of updating, add in hopefully three prospects in the next draft that will be up in the VHL by S63. Maybe throw in a high-profile free agent signing. Yeah, I like the outlook for S63.

5. I'd have to look up Blake Lively to even know who she is, so I may as well just kill her, that's the easy one. I'll go with marry Margot Robbie and fuck Mila Kunis.

Truthfully, I'm not really intently modelling Samuel Gate after anyone, and certainly not any NHL player. I am building him quite similarly to how I went about things with my first defenseman Geno Esposito. Esposito's career was cut short (retired in his fifth season) because I wanted to create a goalie for the Americans, so I never really got to see that through. I want Gate to play good, physical defense while not being incompetent in the offensive zone. That's certainly how I started out building Esposito, although I ultimately did end up making him a more well-rounded player simply because of the update scale making TPE more valuable going from 70 to 80 as opposed to 90 to 99, which I will probably end up doing with Gate as well.

2. Not really, I haven't really thought too much about goals for the season. I'm still working on checking, so as far as my hits total goes, any goals of mine would sort of be in flux. I think any goals that I would have as far as personal stats goes, it would be in my number of hits. I'm not concerned about how many points I get, and my +/- is already disappointing enough that I don't want to set a goal for this season (plus, as we score a lot of our goals on power play, our +/- ratings will be lower). I'm currently on pace for 183 hits, and I'd certainly be satisfied with that number. At minimum I guess I'd like to see 150, but I hope to be somewhere more around 175.

2. No, I'm definitely not expecting a HoF career. I won't say it's impossible, and I think I'll definitely earn an amount of TPE that could put me in the HoF with a different build, but I'm not going to be trying for great offensive stats. I may end up rounding out my build as I become more affected by the update scale, but my early seasons will definitely not add much to my point totals. Unless I can win a few championships, I'm don't see myself even being in consideration. The impact of a defensive defenseman is harder to see, so unless I am clearly one of the best defensive players of my generation, it'd be hard to expect much.

3. I'd like to play with the best, so I'll have to say Mats Johnsson. I'm not really looking to be the top dog on my team, especially early in my career. Playing with someone like Johnsson would be awesome, especially since he's good offensively, somewhere that I don't provide greatly to my team. Plus Quik is a cool dude and I think I'd enjoy being on a team with him.

1. I don't necessarily think I would say that it's a bad thing, but I personally think it should probably be lower. In theory, I would think that making it so difficult to go from 90 to 99 would result in a lack of diversity in player builds. More people will stop at 90 in an attribute to just work on something else to get more value out of their TPE. However, this is just coming from my perspective and player-building philosophy. I do think the change to make it more difficult overall to go from 40 to 99 was a good one, but I just feel like the increased difficulty should have been more spread out. I guess I don't know exactly how the sim engine functions, but is going from 90 to 99 better than going from 60 to 69? Doesn't really seem like it would; either way, your skill is improving by 9 attribute points. The harshness of the update scale at the top just makes it harder for the best players to differentiate themselves from the next tier.

2. I'm not a comics guy, so I'm not totally familiar with either. My exposure to Marvel and DC is mostly through movies, as well as bits and pieces of information from secondary sources like other television shows or conversation. I'd say I prefer Marvel more. I've actually been catching up on all the MCU the past couple months (had only seen Iron Man 1+2 prior to a few months ago). I like the X-Men quite a bit as well. I really don't know much about DC. I really liked the Dark Knight Trilogy (particularly the first two), but other than those three, I've seen maybe a Superman movie or two. Oh, and Suicide Squad, which I wasn't a huge fan of. I just don't really know many of the characters in the DC universe, other than maybe the big names in the Justice League, but know almost nothing as far as details go outside of Batman and Superman.

3. At times yes, at times no. As far as video gaming goes, I played League of Legends for a while, but that was mostly a time waster and something to do with friends. Mega Man X remains my favorite game of all time, thanks in part to nostalgia of course, but it's a fantastic game. The Mega Man franchise as a whole is awesome. As far as current games go, I can't really say much. I am a big fan of board games as well. If you're into board games, I'd suggest a game called Biblios. It's been a big hit with everyone I've played it with. It's not too complicated, and pretty quick. Ticket to Ride is a favorite of mine, and if you like games of conquest/strategy like Risk (but don't want to play a bad game like Risk), I would highly recommend Smallworld. It might take a bit getting used to, but I enjoy it greatly. I think it's good in terms of replayability, though I haven't actually gotten to play it a whole lot.

1. As of the time of these questions, the Meute and the Americans are tied on 35 points, do you see this more as the Meute overacheiving or the Americans underperforming?

2. I don't know if you've heard but Madden 19 is making it's way to PC for the first time since 08, would the use of that interest you in returning to football sims (or maybe just doing more if you're in EFL) in which we obviously have a background in?

3. I remember something being said about how there's a Megaman game being re-released but they're changing the names of the enemies that were homages to Guns 'n' Roses to something else. I've never played Megaman, but I presume those Guns 'n' Roses names sounded pretty dumb, were they pretty dumb?
