I agree. Consuming salaries adds a whole new element to franchise building. Makes it funner. All for it.

Just a few weeks shy of seasons end and everyones beginning to anticipate next years VHL draft. It looks to be a good class with some elite talent up top and good depth. Forward Veran Dragomir is still the clear cut 1 pick but after that it gets very defense heavy. The next projected draftees include 1 goalie and 2 defenseman all currently on the Yukon Rush, including Dragomir we could see 3/4 Yukon Rush be drafted consecutively to start the draft. Included among those prospects is defenseman Billy Pilgrim. Billy is a true stay at home defenseman. His large build is conducive to the physical style of defense he plays. Billy figures to enter the draft sitting at about 175 TPE and should be in discussions around the 3rd/4th pick, but with such a defense heavy draft anything could happen. He will enter the draft with a strong checking ability (75) which is supplemented by his strength (53). He can be depended on to shut down other teams best players with his defense (80) and is capable of moving the puck himself using his skating (60). He has a long ways to go to become a relevant part of the offense, despite his success this season, but he is a solid defender. He will spend the next few weeks working on puck handling as he tries to enter next season a well balanced player.

With the VHLM season winding down players are beginning to look forward to the upcoming season. The draft chatter around the league is beginning and many eyes are focused on the top VHLM prospects. Over the next couple weeks decisions will be made as to what these propspects intend to do next year, but there is no need to wonder about defensive prodigy Billy Pilgrims plans. Pilgrim has committed to remaining in the VHLM for a 2nd season. Pilgrim is having an other-wordly breakout rookie season thus far. He is among tops in the league in hits, +/-, and is climbing the boards in shots blocked. He has suprised everyone, himself included, with his offensive prowess. He is among the league leaders in assists and overall points. His domination has not gone unnoticed and teams with high picks are surely going to be crushed by this news. Players who are comitted to defense as opposed to the glory positions are rare. Defenseman who live and breath to shut the other teams offense down while not worrying about personal statistics are even rarer. Pilgrim is in an odd position however. His team, The Yukon Rush, are heavily favored to win the championship this season, but their success came at a great cost. The Rush leveraged their entire future in going for the championship this season. The have traded all their picks away for players to bolster their line up. While this tactic has proven well done so far this season things look bleak for the Rush heading into next season. The core of The Rush will be moving on the the VHL at seasons end and there is some speculation that Pilgrims camp may request a trade this off season. Expected to leave are D - Lespineau-Lebrunette, D - Roux , and F - Dragomir. This mass exodus of talent (a crop that includes more than 1 likely top 5 pick) not only leaves gaping holes all over the Rush roster, but they have no means to restock. However Pilgrim persists. “I am committed to the Rush. I love it hear and will be dissapointed to leave, whenever that may be.” Pilgrim is currently focusing all his efforts towards winning the championship this season but, as it is with all VHLM’ers, he is also concerned about the future. More specifically, making it to the big league. He has been working feverishly on his defensive play and checking over the last few weeks. His checking has improved markedly, and he has climbed from being in the middle of the pack to among the league leaders in hits in just a few short weeks. While his defensive prowess is hard to quantify with statistics he regularly shuts his opponents down and is one of the best penalty killers in the league. Going forward Pilgrim said he will be working in his puck skills. “I need to get better at blocking shots and I need to be able to move the puck out of our zone better.” He stated. While what uniform he will have on next year or the year after that may be in question, his work ethic and desire to be the best are not.

Weekly Hellbilly/Billy Pilgrim presser

*copied from yukon rush press page* 1. What do you hope to accomplish this year with the Rush? 2. Who would scouts compare you to in another hockey league? 3. Out of the 8 VHL teams, who would you like to be drafted by if you haven't been draft yet? 4. If you have been drafted into the VHL already, what player on your draft team are you looking forward to most? 5. What type of player should we expect to see from you this season, and moving forward in your VHL career? 1. A Championship. Anything less will be a disappointment. 3. No preference at all really. Just excited to get there. 5. A hard hitting stay at home defenseman. Someone who will keep the puck away from his teams net. -

This week in the VHLM was a busy one in which we saw 2 huge trades occur. The top 2 teams in the standings both moved draft picks in order to improve their rosters and chances of winning the league championship. These noves are not too uncommon but always add a nice wrinkle to break up the monotony of the regular season. While it is much too soon to declare winners and losers it looks like all the teams involved in these trades come out looking good. The 1st trade to occur was between the 1st place Yukon Rush and the struggling Saskatoon Wild. The Wild looked to make the playoffs but were definitely the 4th team in a 3 team race to the championship. The Yukon Rush traded their 1st and 2nd round picks for some offensive help. Despite leading the league in goals the Rush already dress an elite group of defenseman and had room only to improve on offense. The Rush received LW Veran Dragomir and C John Stronk. Dragomir is currently the highest TPE player in the league and is poised to break out on the Rush roster before he is most likely drafted 1st overall in next seasons VHL draft. In the 2nd trade the 2nd place Las Vegas Aces added a couple pieces to help them try and close the gap between them and the Rush. Again we saw the Saskatoon Wild shedding players and stock piling picks. Las Vegas acquired Dragon McDragin and Otto Axelson in exchange for their 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks. These are bold moves all the way around. Saskatoon will have one impressive roster in coming years, but only time will tell who gets the most out of these trades and who brings home the championship.

Hey folks, thanks for taking the time to check out this weeks article. I am shaking things up a bit this week. Instead of my usual player-centric peice in Pilgrim I’m going to do a quick run down of the current state of affairs in the VHLM. I know some of you are too busy to follow closely or don’t have players in the league, so this one is for you guys. The season is winding down now, with all teams having 44-47 games completed. The top and bottom teams are pretty clear at this point, and we have a good idea of who will make the playoffs, but there is a very tight battle for 2nd seed. 2nd seed guarantees home ice advanatge all they way through the semi finals for whoever pulls through. Cream of the Crop Yukon Rush- The Yukon Rush are head and shoulders above the rest of the league as of right now. Through 47 games they have amassed 72 points, good for 1st place by a massive 17 point margin. Their 77% win percentage tops the league, with the 2nd place team coming in at 60% currently. The Rush have an absolutely dominant defense, playing in front of their pleasantly suprising young goalie, that has allowed both the fewest shots on goal and fewest goals allowed all season. Despite their dominance defensively the Rush have their faults. Their offense struggles at times despite leading the league in goals scored. It is rumored they may try moving some draft picks before the trade deadline to bring in a forward or 2. Almost There Las Vegas Aces: Currently in 2nd place with 55 points Las Vegas Has all but secured their spot in the playoffs. Their offense can hang with anyone in the league but they arw a well balanced team coning in at 2nd fewest goals allowed. On paper their records dont reflect this but Las Vegas seems to be a superior team to the 3rd place Oslo Storm. Oslo Storm: The Oslo Storm are a bit of a mystery team. They’re play is wildly inconsistent and that is reflected in their results. They currently trail the 2nd place Las Vegas Aces by just 1 point despite having a goals for/against ratio of plus 1. Las Vegas is +28. The most interesting thing about Oslo is the ability to be a true disruptive force come playoff time. For some reason The Yukon Rush struggle mightily against The Storm, and recently lost 3 in a row to them. Should Oslo maintain 2nd or 3rd seed they could potentially meet Yukon in the finals making for a VERY intersting matchup. Obligatory Mentions Saskatoon Wild: The Wild will most likely make the playoffs this season, but a 1st round exit is very likely. With a goal for/against ration of -29 they have not earned their playoff spot, and more or less back their way into the playoffs by way of default. They look to have some potential and could possibly be in playoff contention next season. Ottawa Lynx: Punching bag, cupcake, tomato can...any number of deprecating sports cliches apply to the Lynx in their current state. They have a pourous defense and no offesnive spark. This team has to really make some strides this off season to compete next year.
